    I doubt the green argument actually holds for cycling solar tech. My guess is that the extra energy and materials used to make and integrate solar panels far outweigh the small amount of power generated. If you want to be green with solar, get solar panels for your house and charge your devices with it.

    • @DubVs4096
      @DubVs4096 11 часов назад +3

      To be clear: solar makes sense for people doing long events. But most products should skip it to avoid unnecessary waste.

      Agree w/home solar panel suggestion. I add that for multi day rides, a dynamo hub will keep a battery charged.

    Rack mounts on everything other than race bikes please - not much to ask.
    Many folk prefer panniers to frame bags and seat packs. Rack mounts are fitted to some carbon bikes, but not enough. If you need to use a little more carbon to reinforce the frame, that's fine, it's not a race bike and most cyclists don't race anyway.

    The “swan-song” argument for rim brakes reminds me of every car review from the early 2000s when they talked about the “swan-song” for v8/v10/v12 engines. There are more of those now than there have even been.

    • @rangersmith4652
      @rangersmith4652 10 часов назад +6

      We still have swans, right? I despise the added complexity of hydraulic disks and motorized shifters on road bikes, and I will not buy such a bike. So if the brands want to sell me a new road bike, they will have to offer rim brakes and cable/spring shifting.

    Maybe campag should make a high end rim brake set. Add a little tyre clearance, high range derailleur, 2x12, make it super light. It would have market with the weight weenies, the home mechanics, and the style obessives.

  • @clew4349
    @clew4349 6 часов назад +2

    In line with the rim brake/mechanical groupset, it would be great if the rim brake was designed to accommodate wider tires (up to 32mm?). Bike companies should also offer the ability buy bikes with crank and stem lengths, handlebar width, and perhaps even gearing on a build to order basis. The only innovation required here is better supply chain management. It would of course have longer lead time, but I'd be ok with that to get a bike that works for me. Crazy to pay up to $9K for an Ultegra equipped bike, and then have to spend even more to make it fit. Also offer more bikes with standard bar/stem setups so that cyclists can easily make adjustments (ie. Aethos)

    • @jayobannon5359
      @jayobannon5359 5 часов назад

      I went to the handmade bike show in Portland and castigated the wheel manufacturers there for not having wider rims for rim brakes. Interestingly, the majority of those custom bike builders are manufactured for rim brakes.

      @einundsiebenziger5488 8 часов назад

      Cues (despite the silly name) was the best idea Shimano had recently. Simply for the sake of getting rid of the low- to mid-tier groupsets you were tired of learning the differences between them.

    Wider and lower gear ratios on drop handlebar bikes please. It's more common for people to struggle up hills than spin-out and want to go faster downhill.

      How much lower than 31-40 (already available for Shimano GRX) do you want to go? If you can't ride up any of the steepest alpine passes seated on a gear like this, it's not the bike that prevents you from doing it.

    • @simon_hollins
      @simon_hollins 7 часов назад +2

      Completely agree. It’s not that they aren’t available, it’s that the cassettes fitted as standard to a new bike suit the superfit youngsters not the typical fairly fit amateurs (like me) who just want to get up the hills. Changing my cassette to 11-34 from 11-28 was a gamechanger for me.

    • @jayobannon5359

    • @simon_hollins
      @simon_hollins 5 часов назад +2

      @@jayobannon5359Sure, I thought about that but I was pushing my tech ability just changing a cassette.
      The point being why not make these bikes easy to ride at the point of sale, for a typical rider with an FTP of maybe 150W-200W and max power of 500W - 700W, spinning at around 80-85 rpm cadence. Not a world tour pro.

      @@einundsiebenziger5488 when you get to 66yo and you are touring with kit, you can still get up alpine passes, but it does get harder, so why not have an easier option? One of my bikes is 24 years old with Shimano Deore XT and has lower gears than GRX can offer - despite Shimano's smoke and mirror claims, that doesn't seem like progress to me.

As for heart rate monitors, the Decathlon ones are actually very good in terms of ruggedness. Never had them die on me and the sensor clips on/out of the strap.

    I would welcome a world in which the parts to keep older Super Record or DuraAce mechanical on the road aren't really hard to find. Even at $400 per cassette, I have a at least one new Super Record 11-27 and one Super Record 11-25 for my prized, ten-year-old Campy mechanical steed. Now, however, it's getting harder to find the chain or, more recently hood covers (6 month wait!)

    So your big concern about wide handlebars is that they're less aero-efficient. That most people are riding bars that are too wide for an optimal fit isn't on your radar. Cool. It's good to see someone focused on saving precious watts rather than being concerned about people having a proper fit. You do realize, don't you, that it's likely that the overwhelming majority of cyclists don't give a damn about saving a couple of watts, right. Oh, wait. You probably don't realize that. It's good to see "journalists" being open about how much they really don't care about anyone that isn't chasing marginal gains.

      Adjustable stems are super common on hybrid/trekking/commuter bikes. Hardly ever has any of them been adjusted after the bike has left the shop. They are heavy and they're ugly. And width-adjustable bars are just accidents waiting to happen. Have your bike properly adjusted to you when you buy it makes much more sense.
