- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is out in cinemas now, and to mark the return of the epic franchise, we catch up with actor Kevin Durand about the unorthodox methods he underwent to prepare for the role.
Durand told The Independent: “I did four weeks of ape school, watched a lot of documentaries on bonobos and spent time at the zoo” to get into character as the despotic ape leader, Proximus Caesar.
The Independent has been at the frontline of journalism since 1986, with its mission to challenge and debate always ahead of its time.
In today’s increasingly fragmented world, communities want real facts and frank opinions delivered first-hand from a non-biased news brand that they can trust.

I've had a hard day this was the first thing that made me laugh 🤣🤣🤣
😂
That was a good one 😂
Thank you sir, you are appreciated 😂
Kevin durand is massively underrated
Vasiliy Fet was the only reason I watched The Strain.
💯
@@SometimesOriginalbingo. The old dude was pretty cool too. The dynamic between him and the Nazi. Superunderrrated show. First season was “perfect!!!” It went downhill after that.
Yes!!!
Facts bro!
He's such a versatile actor.
This guy is seriously talented and underrated
It's an amazing actor.
Walking tall he was awesome and the blob etc
Vasiliy Fet is an awesome character. The way he was in that show rocked !!.
He was so good as Harbard in Vikings aswell he’s far too underrated
That ape voice tho. Kevin Durand needs to find a band and come out with a metal album 🤘
Sounds like Murmaider by Dethklok
Yes😂👍
Truth.
He's a French rapper actually
He sings with Indoor Garden Party.
"Did you just call me blob?" "No i said bub"
I thought he looked familiar!! Lol
THAT'S where I've seen him before! Lol
Fred Dukes? That looks like the creature that ate Fred Dukes!
@@ultraviolet540 "oh your real funny Logan"
Lmao
This dudes been there bad guy or henchmen in so many films, glad he’s getting his due now, good actor
Played in Vikings as well as a “god” an his characters he creates or has to be are always pure and like it’s a “Real person” ✊
Proximus was such a great character and Kevin crushed the role. Wish we would’ve seen more from Proximus in the film
Who knows 🤷♂️ maybe he survived the fall? Unlikely but ya never know
Imagine this guy as deathstroke
Now that you've said it, I can't stop seeing it!
@@AlishaHerbiederbie hahahaha yeah I think he’s so underrated everything I’ve seen him in he’s good and he would kill it as deathstroke since Joe is no longer deathstroke but hey Kevin can do it and he’s the right height for it too let’s make him our new deathstroke!!!
My guy you might be onto something.
@@MarioGuzman-kr6go thank you man thank you I think he would absolutely kill it
Ab the same height too
I loved this guy in The Strain
He was great in that
After years of not being able to afford streaming services I got to finish the series loved it
Also in Stargate SG1
This!
Yeah the strain was awesome
I love how this guy kinda played the big dumb Brunt and most of his roles but really this past couple years has been expanding. Love this guy.
Damn he did a good job with the voice
He had my attention when he played the heck out of Gabriel
I loved legion!!
I will never forget that movie!
@@Glum1964 yes it’s a classic
@@GabrielMacDougall very memorable
I forgot he was in that. Helluva movie
All the losers hating on the guy when he’s doing well for himself and they can’t relate😂🫵🏽
Is it me or is this just a more manly Elon musk
I don’t think that’s Elon Musk at all
Yeah, I sees it 😮
Kevin spacey
Basically
bro shut up i'm laughing
Been a fan of this dude for a LONG time, massively underrated.
From rat catcher to Ape is a crazy come up
Kevin Durand as Gabriel is still one of the best acting roles I’ve seen to date.
In every clip I've seen of Proximus, he's so compelling and charismatic. I can't wait to go see the movie.
They didn't do him justice
Ever since lost I’ve been obsessed with this actor. So so so talented.
Kevin Durand is soooo good at playing and guys!
This guy needs more recognition
Glad he is getting his flowers now! He is legit great in everything. To the point where i underrated him aswell! He was great in Abigail and the best part of kingdom
Why isn't Kevin Durand more celebrated? I have never been disappointed in any of his acting rolls. Best Archangel Gabriel ever
I thought Proximus was a captivating villain and if they are really to make another two movies I hope he comes back. He strikes me as a type that even after getting torn up by eagles, he could swim to shore and plan a brutal revenge. Long Live Proximus Caesar.
This man has just gotten better and better the last 3 decades. Such a good actor.
If you haven't already seen him in Abagail, he is amazing in it. Really worth seeing that movie.
😂😂😂😂 loool he was funny on that movie was bummed he died
I was so shocked on finding out he was the same actor at Abigail 😭
He killed both of those movie roles
Oh i didnt know he was in planet of the apes. Hes an incredible actor. He sneaks into many different genre of film and steals the spotlight. He was a viking god, and even an xmen.
Wasn't he Blob?
I thought that was Idris's voice first time I saw the trailer. I'm glad this guy is finally getting recognition just like Walton Goggins.
Glad he made it off "the Island".
Is that a lost reference lmao
@@thelonetacoj6487 - Yup.
Reference is from X-men Origins Wolverine
His character in origins had already attacked the lost island and pretended to get stabbed to death. They were mercs
i thought it was a reference to epstein’s island
I'm so glad to see him on a big movie again, this man can play every type of charachter. I have such a big respect for him
Kevin been around forever. Love watching him work. True actor.
he was so good, i hope he returns in the sequel wanted more of his character
He won't. His character died after falling off a cliff.
@@fearfulclan2007 we did not see a body and you know what they say no body no confirmacion
@@fearfulclan2007I’m 50/50 about that because he fell in water and we never saw his body, as well remember the fall that noa had in the beginning of the movie and he survived. It’s very plausible that he is alive
@@liamgade8399 We never saw Koba's body and he's dead.
@@breyanadebrah9791 Even Stu Macher was dead
Loved this actor in 3:10 to Yuma & Smokin Aces. He can play a hell of a villain that’ll make you hate but that’s his task & he does a damn good job of it. Give this man MORE roles!
Every role ive seen this guy in, he has done amazing. Criminally underrated actor.
100% Empathic .100% understatetment .....more then an actor. talking in a way an ape would do it without knowing how he would do it is just genius. I'm impressed as foook
Dude is such an underrated actor! He tends to play bad guys, maybe that's why. But he is really a good actor.
One off the best method actors around. Him and James spader 110% great actors
That dude right there is probably one of the better actors of our generation and he is the most slept on dude that guy is amazing
I love this guy.
Kevin would make a great Tamerlan charachter, He would fit 100%.
He is super underrated. It's crazy how soft and thoughtful he is in real life when his best known characters are the total opposite.
You can tell he loves this character by him always taking advantage of the opportunity to play him
Every roll he does is always amazing. Always. He's never missed.
He was definitely one of the best parts of the movie‼️
Anybody here remember him in Mystery, Alaska? My favorite hockey movie and actually his very first movie gig. Such a classic
A wonderful actor/performer. He’s an artist.
This dude is so good that he can either play goofy comedic characters to sinister villains
He's so good at playing villain characters.
Imagine, reading a potential hire’s resume, and you read: “I went through 4 weeks of Ape School.” 😂
Kevin Durand is absolutely one of my favorite actors ever. Definitely a top 5.
Angel Gabriel the legion movie made me a fan of Kevin Durand
Gotta love all the 12 year old haters, calling this cringe, but yet will obsess about everything fortnite and call of duty.
Y'all so unhappy with your pathetic lives, you gotta come online and try to talk shit about someone who has way more passion for life than you do.
Dude has been one of my favorites since Walking Tall with the rock.
Dude is a phenomenal actor a student of his craft bravo
Big fan of this guy and the movies he plays in. This was pretty hilarious “I did 4 weeks of ape school.” 😂
I’ve always enjoyed he’s acting. From mystery Alaska to Robin Hood he’s so good at portraying each character. I’ve always felt a great actor can be defined when you watch a film and in that 2hour span, you don’t see the Hollywood actor, you truly see the character. What I mean is so often do you watch a film and see the actor but your thinking of what other films they have been in while watching. There are few actors that are so good that watching them you don’t see their past performances, you don’t even see that actor you simply see the character. I love those actors that leave you feeling as though you witnessed something and not just watched something you know
He's such an underrated actor and it's a shame
this man is talking about this like it’s an achievement for humanity
Somebodys jealous
@@wingedferret5713 of ape school?
@@powder1137of being paid millions for a fun job
@Rebel-butcher1014 I didn’t pay for school
Great actor I remember watching him on
The Strain...
Underrated actor for sure, this man chews his roles up and spits them out ❤
Kevin definitely needs more recognition. He's severely underrated ❤
I love how he's still moving like an Ape even on the interview
This man is an excellent actor.
Looking forward on his next role !
I love this guy's process, he's been around, time 2 shine "moviestar"
He learned how apes hold their hands for 4 weeks.
Fun fact, as someone who has worked with hand tools (hammers, trowels, shovels, picks, etc), my fingers stay curled like that, especially my right hand (I’m right-handed).
if you remember that chimpanzee sanctuary lady whose face got torn off by a chimp, you know how dangerous chimps can be.
Most chimps don’t act like that one did though. That was a tragic case of an animal that was drugged into compliance while being held in solitude during sexual maturity. So much went wrong for that situation to unfold how it did.
@@tbug50 i'm not saying most chimps do. i'm saying that they are very, very strong and dangerous. to the point where they can just use their bare hands to tear off human flesh.
I wonder how often he books a hotel and everybody gets excited thinking oevin durant is coming. 😂
Always enjoyed his acting.
He will forever be Joshua for me. ❤
There’s a scene when the girl pulls out a firearm she shoots a chimp and you see him hover around behind the other chimps as a shield. That scene of him looking over there shoulders while asking the girl if there’s any more guns in the bunker, for some reason that bit stuck in my head then when I googled who the actor was I fkn lost it 💀 bc that’s something he would actually do. Some movies he plays are really good role as an a**hole
He did a great job, the voice sounds like a convincing blend of ape and human
Been watching him from the beginning! Great actor!
Good Actor this Lad.🇮🇲👍🇮🇲
I also liked him in the movie “I’m number 4”. Great actor.
He consistently demonstrates exceptional acting abilities.
I've always loved this man's talent
That opening line caught me off guard a bit. Not gonna lie
My next job interview:
- ‘I did 4 weeks of ape school’
The way he said that was so much pride cracks me up I mean, dude that’s hilarious. I could never tell somebody that with a straight face.
Ps I was talking about , “ I took 4 weeks of ape school”! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
He's such an amazing actor
Wow! Didn't know he was such a talented actor.
We’re two separate species, but I love the commitment and enthusiasm
Underrated actor for sure... Only topped by micheal shannon
Damn I wish they'd put him in a GOOD Resident Evil movie. Doing the first game right with him as Barry Burton would be perfection.
Reading these comments. Smh. Wt$ is wrong with you foos?!! He's an actor. To make these movies come to life! He as to become said part. Lmbo. That's hard for yall to get it?!
“Ape School” LMAOOOOO 😂😂 Only in Hollywierd 🤦🏻♂️
4 weeks is a crazy amount of time to be spent in the south side of Chicago.
I absolutely love Kevin Durand. He’s one of my favorite actors.
Love this guy! So underrated!
He was so good in lost, might actually watch this series finally
some actors are true artists
Love kevin Durand, want to see him in more!
Kevin would've been awesome as Negan.
They were taking the Micky out of you😂
He did a wonderful job....everyone did a wonderful job....I'm excited to see the future in the Planet of the apes movies.
His acting was one of the best parts of the movie
I did 0 weeks of ape school ... When I relax my hands, my fingers curl ✊
Kevin Durant does some crazy things for acting dude was a absolute unit then he got a role where he dropped down to like 135lbs crazy
