  • Masters Historic Racing F1 class at the Monterey Historics. My father let me race his Lotus 49 for my first time, and it was a difficult car to learn to drive with so much power and so little grip! I got more and more comfortable and then spun at the end of the event, thankfully not too serious.
Chassis R2 was Jim Clark's car in 1967, and he won 3 Grand Prix (Zandvoort, Watkins Glen, Silverstone) and 4 Tasman series races in it. Jo Siffert, Graham Hill, and Jackie Oliver all drove the car in 1968. Pete Lovely bought R2 (thinking it was R11, a Graham Hill car) and raced it for a long time before Bob Baker acquired the car. My father acquired R2 in 2009 and had it restored (by Classic Team Lotus) to 49A spec, how it raced at Watkins Glen 1967.

I did not know that R2 was scanned. Any idea when ??
I admit I was far from the limit, since it was my first time driving. I kept imaging how Clark would have been powersliding a lot more haha

@@macmacma Hmm I reckon it would have been scanned around mid 2012?? maybe earlier as it took iRacing a very long time to release it. The iRacing car has got a hell of a lot more grip than you had there by the way. R2 looks like a real handful in that video. Judging by the engine sound it didnt look like you could even get to full throttle in the low gears.
This is the iRacing car . This was our race on Saturday just gone. Yes im running a BRM paint hehehe

@@macmacma I have been Simracing, my favourite car being the Lotus 49 since 1998. I imagine the car to be absolutely intimidating in real life. It's so easy to overdo it at some point but so satisfying at the same time if you get it right. I would think I have done probably a lot more laps than Jim Clark ever could do in that car without ever having to fear for my health or my life, and still I am blown away by the sheer guts and talent involved in pushing a car like that to those limits, looking so elegant and smooth doing it like he did. A true master! Thank you for sharing your experience in that gorgeous piece of racing history! I liked your 917 videos a lot as well!! Also a car that has by now been modeled quite good in the Simracing world. I imagine the Lotus to be the more difficult car to push to the (personal) limit? Which of those two was physically more demanding if you don't mind me asking? Cheers from Germany! keep those nice videos coming!

Amazing love these non or low downforce cars, proper drivers cars. F1 today just don’t feel like fun like this car.

This Lotus 49 is the holy grail of F1 cars, because it was the chassis R2, which was droven by the greatest driver ever - JIM CLARK.
More history and magic is not possible..
So stunning to see this car on the track again, compliment for some fine small oversteers/opposite locks on your first ride ...remarkable. ;-)
May i ask you how you came into posession of legendary R2 ?
I thougt it was part of Classic Team Lotus, led by Clive Chapman.
Another compliment for your respect and knowledge of the glorious history, recogniziable by the dark blue helmet and late red striped overall of the great flying scot.
I miss only Jimmy`s original "JC" leather gloves...

I think Classic Team Lotus only restores and race prepares the cars for the owners.

Think of it as a fat-tire Formula Ford with 400hp and inferior brakes.

Brakes are pretty good! Takes forever to get temp in the tires.
