- Опубликовано: 26 янв 2020
- Erica Synths and Ninja Tune have teamed up to create the Zen Delay. Our man in the know, Martin Stimming, gives it the litmus test for Telekom Electronic Beats TV.
Bringing together the best of the digital and analogue worlds, the Zen Delay is a BPM-synced stereo delay line, combining a multi-mode 24 dB synth filter and valve overdrive, and an extreme feedback range, for lo-fi, dub and experimental effects.
Sounds promising, so let’s get Stimming's verdict!

Yessss
I'd get one, but I hate when I order something and there's a delay
Zen.... 😬

What a great review style! What a pleasure to listen to someone that tells you things that matter!
it's such a pleasure to watch great and clever review ! Thank you Telekon EB team !
Another superb review! I enjoy watching this channel a lot! ❤️
thank you for this great review and demo...keep on keeping on.
Lovely, even the few drawbacks mentioned. Very inspiring unit for live sessions.
My fav reviews, so well & playfull explained !
I bought this beautiful thing almost completely on the strength of his reaction at about 6 min 10 seconds... Great review, lovely delay
Thank you, Martin! My favourite reviewer
Most review ever.Epic jams, and I laughed a lot with Martin’s excitement XD XD If you manage to get him excited then the shit is good 😂 And this delay is the best I ve seen for far also.Keep up the great reviews👍🏼
Loved every second of this tutorial
This was soooo fun... because it took me back to my first delay machine... an Ibanez DM1000. One full second of delay. Learned and did so much crazy stuff with that and my Juno. Thanks for those looping memories... :-)
Everything Erica does is amazing. Best manufacturer out there.
Watching the expressions of your face tells more than your words. Anyway, another honest and detailed review, from someone who actually knows what he's talking about. Thank You!
I really like your channel. And your review was extremely informative. Thanks for your video 👍🏻

Thanks for the review, it’s a pretty inspiring delay.
Stimming is such a fucking character! Love his product reviews.
Very nice review and device!

Charming Review!
I love this guy! Thanks
4:46 is where you sell me on this thing. I just love how wild and textured it takes things.
Great review as always, curious to know the little mixer Stimming is using front and center.
Martin stimming instant mastering chain I believe
this is other world :O (Y) stimming master class !!!
Brilliant thorough review for an exciting device -- thanks Telekom & Stimming!!
I'm so tempted to get one... But I'm also thinking it might make more sense to go modular instead, and build a delay/filter/tube eurorack. It'd only be a little pricier, and a lot more room to grow and customize... but maybe in the end a more difficult experience? Decisions decisions...
modular in this quality will cost double price of the zen delay.
and: it took 3 years to design the zen delay in a way that it is very easy and effective playable
@@LsbTv taking a closer look and i begin to see what you mean - all this functionality in eurorack would be easily at least twice the cost, and doubtless wouldn’t work as well
@@TimWJones123 yess but the modulation possibilities will be like 20 times bigger and you can decide the signal path like oh lets put the filter before delay etc. The only usercase I see for this is live. But if you are still exploring and not so much on the road, go ahead with Eurorack!
@@TimWJones123 by modulations possibilities take an example on this (from about 12 min) ruclips.net/video/gDNS7uL0EeA/видео.html
be careful of the rabbit hole... most people that go in never come out.
Stimming , brilliant as ever.
Thankyou for this very hands on and (organic) good demo! Levi in sweden (old syntgranpa, i subbed;) -- think i heard a cat somewhere in there too!! ha,ha! --
Clever done....thx 🎼
I saw stimming, i hit a like button.

Wow lovely 😊
6:11 that reaction! omg that cracked me up hahahahahahah
HAHHAHA :D "no word needed"
Great reviews! I can tell if I want it or not after the revue! 💯 i did want this Zen Delay and bought it. Its amazing. QUESTION! Anybody know what speakers he is using? They’re down firing speakers and remind me sort of Bang & Olufsen but they are not. Very cool speakers tho
Sounds interesting! 🎸🎶
Wonderful review, very much appreciated. What is the machine playing the kick and snare into it?
1010 Blackbox
Quality video !
Martin recommends, I put it on my list.
Good choice. I have it since last week and it's amazing and so easy to use.
Me too
Superb bit of kit.
Cv modulation and midi cc would make this even more fantastic. I think the design choice was meant to force a hands on experience. Be on the look out for a version 2 and later a version 3 like with the acid box.
Yes I totally agree here Douglas Cv+CC would be awesome... but like it is it is even more performance inspiring as you know that 100% repeatability isn't that easy achievable, or not achievable at all - depending on the talent input... One thing is for sure, I'm not gonna wait for the V2 or V3 🙂
Always gotta be someone who needs CV. Nobody uses CV. Only a few weirdos.
Given you're really not into the drive on this unit i'd really like to see what you like for warming / saturation and character processing. A review on analog heat or something like that would be cool.
DIY Color Duo !
17:21 - 17:43 actually good sounding build up section
Sounds incredible
did Erica fix the high pitched whine in a software update on this? cant quite find the answer
is there any way to enable trails on the delay? when you turn off the effect
The filter sounds great! Very Moog-like and yes, definitely more juicy :) Overall sounds quite cool but not my general style. think i'd rather go for a Volante and save a few bucks. Still dope though :)
i‘m sure you would fancy the Teil1 from keinedelay too. unfortunately i have not come across a hardware delay that features the groove and feel function from the echoboy which is awesome to play with rhythms.
ok looks like the Reminder from Enjoy Electronics is able to do that
Excellent stuff Martin! I'm planing to change the tube to get better distortion/overdrive... Has anyone attempted to do so yet? Amazing unit... Thanks so much for doing this @Martin Stimming!

Where did you get those cables? What brand are those?
Is the peeping digi Delay from the line in overdrive maybe?
Hey I own a Zen delay, but I find it has a few too many issues. The last one I noticed is a high pitched noise from the high pass filter. It's there simply when you switch to the high pass even with everything off and the filter completely open. Can anyone confirm this, or is it maybe just my unit?
I'de like to know what he thinks of that 1010 music blackbox
I like the cables. What are these?
Was already thinking about getting one of these units ... After seeing that virtuoso performance by the man himself, I'm definitely getting one now
This looks like so much fun.
Id love to run this zen delay after a mastersounds fx Unit the two combimed with an h90 Will absolute madness.
would that be possible? daisy chaining both?
hell yes
It sounds incredible. I don’t understand your complaints
Oh god this guy is brilliant
what about the noise issue with certain filter settings? anyone notice that?
Love those flat cables - who makes them?
Also Zen Delay... Ninja Tunes... need to have this now! Sounds awesome.
As I know they colaborate on this.
found them, Oyaide Neo d+
Ivi Topp whoa nice find! Thanks!
Good review, I own one and his comments are fair.
@Stimming_official do you like it better then the jomox t resonator? Are you still using that delay/filter matrix?
yes, the t-Resonator was the one which came to my mind while using the zen. I would say, the zen is the next gen of devices. much easier to use (more sweetspots) and in general better sounding. the t-Resonator was a pain in the a.. to find a good sounding spot.
@@MartinStimming Plus the T-Resonator is not syncable to Midi wich is an important feature in most peoples workflow. ;)
The eurorack version might be better for to extra control. Jurgen did a demo of a midi controllable pre-production version last year.
there's a loop-resonator coming out (check Jomox product page) and that's tempting me.
What sort of FX unit did he use on Reflections? Anyone? It had that variable time /feedback without pitch change.
about the phasing: you can either have an analog-dry signal or you can have no latency, i would have liked the option to set it up however you want (like on the H9)
good point!
20:37 me in the morning moaning while not wanting to get up
are those speakers next to Stimming?
Sehr unterhaltsames review!
What speakers are those?
Stimming and Slices back with more quality content!
Haha, try those feedback things with a memoryman and your speakers are fucked! Great tool. And thanks for pointing out the weaker things on it, too. I wish they'd implemented a send/return for the feedback. Few delays have it, but it's such a powerful feature. Would be interesting to know how the signal path on this is. From the filter back to the delay feedback would be killer.
like this man
Jawohl
what speakers are those?
what other gear is on the table?
What are yours speakers ?
What is that small drum machine you are using?
1010 music blackbox. Not a drum machine but a full sample computer
Are those custom monitors? anyone knows ?
Is that a black Arturia Microfreak?
Sounds like the next Aphex Twin album could be made with one synth, one drum machine and just this delay unit.
73Fluxx1 well said
If you knew the sound manipulating devices that have been out there for decades now...
Does anyone know what this small beat machine on the left is?
Tom Finster Thats the 1010music blackbox. Its a nice compact sampler :)
@@TheLink0o thank you
Stimming mentioned a high pitched noise in digital mode. I recognized it, too. When you turn down delay time to almost zero (high feedback) while reducing the input signal there is a noise at around 1kHz. This can get quite annoying. Anybody having this issue, too?
it's a shame you can't control the filter, etc with a continous control input. Great review, I'm still in.
Who thumbs down this? Report to my office immediately!
😬
Haha
Yeah, I don't get how every video has a few downvotes, no matter how good it is. Maybe there's a culture somewhere that has the meanings flipped?
Der neue Bassline DB 01 Acid Synthi von Erica wäre auch gut zum testen!
Try Strymon Volante for a more tame delay.
PS you can sequence all parameters with midi CC.
17:30 The digital-delay "phasing-feeping-problem" is generating because the delay time is completely down/very short while the Feedback is active. It's then normal that the wet signal sounds so "phasing metallic". I tried it with my Nemesis Digital Delay: Short to Zero delay-time and 12'+clock feedback and it sounded almost the same.
So a non problem? Reducing the feedback would erase the phase issue?
@@mmhcreates yeah or adjusting the delay time
Love your reviews! I'm curious: is there a reason why you don't go modular with Eurorack i.e.? There are Delay modules like the 4ms tapographic delay which have such a huge amount of diversity where I can imagine u gonna like it. seriously, u will!
I had a modular system for quite some time before the whole concept went through the roof. thats why I know I dont need one ;) to be more precise: in the analog world I'm looking for instruments, in the sequencer I love the modular concept - bitwig is the daw who goes this path inside its arrangement.
but yes, it seems I miss some innovation as in the modular field are a lot of interesting concepts. transforming this into a usable, intuitive instrument still is the tricky part I suppose. if that makes any sense for you...
It’s crazy that it’s not going crazy.
Indeed
What are these speakers he uses, someone?
8:52 is my favorite part.
Great review, but that noise, I have to agree, not my taste
What are those speakers?!
what are those wooded UFO things behind him? Are they speakers!?
Anyone know what is that speaker?
@@patthesplat293 Thank you.
@6:16 perfect!
can i connect this to my Allan&Heath Xone96 ?
If you have FX Send and returns, yes
@@ElectronicBeatsTV yessss, I have connected a rmx 1000 on it now
what sampler did he use?
thats the 1010music blackbox. recommendable if you're looking for a good sounding little sampling sketchpad.
17:51 🤣
LOL 😂 10:06 look at him! He’s totally in the moment. Great
