I really prefer this version. In the new one with the perspective being from a newly pregnant barely-adult voice it really changes the meaning of the song. This version, to me, always read as a young teenage girl asking her parents ‘where do babies come from’ as a stand in for ‘where do I come from.’ The thesis of this version to me has always been when she asks ‘do they come from angels and love/ or do they come from demons and lust’ basically her asking her parents ‘do you love me or do you hate me for being an accident’ In other words ‘do you want/care for me.’ Especially cause I first heard this song in the Crybaby era which was all about a young girl struggling with a dysfunctional family and trying to find a way to feel loved and wanted despite that, this is the message the song has always had to me. And I like that message much more then the new one as it being from an adult perspective means it’s more mournfully looking back on mistakes, both hers and her parents, and I just find the more existential meaning in this version to be more compelling.
