James Arness & John Wayne vs Ed Asner! Who do you think will win?GUNSMOKE stories!A WORD ON WESTERNS

- Long before THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW made Ed Asner a multi-Emmy winning household name, he toiled and toiled in movies and TV as a go-to Bad Guy. Not much fun for him, but a real treat for those of us who watched his memorable performances in a very wide variety of of shows. Ed was bested by James Arness' Marshall Matt Dillon on GUNSMOKE. Twice! Would you believe 5'9" Asner taking on 6'7" Arness? It happened! Ed was being bad on THE VIRGINIAN when a runaway horse he was riding dodged a tree branch. Ed wasn't so lucky. He was even a crazed, ex-football player and bodyguard in an episode of THE FUGITIVE, one of several he made. Everything changed for Ed Asner when he landed the part of lovable curmudgeon Lou Grant in 1970 opposite Mary Tyler Moore. When that series ended in 1977, it was a role he continued on LOU GRANT. That series was a bold departure at the time. It wasn't a sit-com spin-off, but an hour-long dramatic series with "comedic overtones." Asner recalls his early roles and then, in a surprise appearance, actress Jacqueline Scott (1931-2020), a friend and GUNSMOKE co-star, briefly joined us on-stage to remanence. Sadly, Jackie died July 23, 2020. This episode of A WORD ON WESTERNS was recorded at The Autry, May 15, 2018.

James Arness & his brother Peter Graves graduated from my mothers high school in Minneapolis, North High Polars. She graduated with Robert Vaughn who came to many reunions & took pictures with fellow class mates. (We have some). It was largely a height challenged student body. About 70% were shorter Jewish students. The Arness brothers were like GIANTS.
That's very funny, Buddy. They still seem like GIANTS!
@@AWordonWesterns Yes they do. My mother was the center on the girls BB team at '5'9" she was the tallest girl in school. I don't know if the bros. played though.
Loved this one. Asner comes over with the "Lou Grant" attitude but he is more bark than bite as was his Lou character. He was in a lot of Westerns and it's no problem remembering him in them but his super success with the Lou Grant persona certainly overshadowed everything else. Jackie Scott is a delightful interuption. She's so full of life here it's hard to believe that she passed away but I understand that is the case. Thank you Rob, you are the best.
Rob's off the cuff description of the history of film never ceases to amaze me.
Rob, you should have a show introducing movies on TCM or AMC or the Starz/Encore Westerns Channel.
Thanks, Scotty. Let 'em know.
Hi Rob...great interview with Ed Asher!...Nce when Jacqueline Scott came on stage...very funny between her & Ed!... Tks for sharing with all of us!...We all look forward to the next video!
Glad you enjoyed it, Thomas.
My God, I absolutely love these interviews. Watching these is an event for me.
Why thanks, Madman!
What a coincidence. My wife and I watched "The Shepherd of the Hills" for the first time a couple of nights ago. It's a beautiful 1941 color film with a solid story line and excellent cast. Even though northern California location shots were used to simulate the Ozarks, this turned out to be a wise choice because the scenery is spectacular. Ward Bond and Harry Carey, Sr. are present despite it being directed by Henry Hathaway instead of John Ford, and John Qualen plays his usual Swedish/Norwegian/Danish character (which makes about four movies in a row I've seen him in - all by coincidence). The real surprise is watching a young Marc Lawrence play a very empathetic and tragic character, far from his later roles as the stereotypical mobster/hit man. This is a movie well worth watching.
I should add this has been one of your funniest freewheeling interviews. I'm so sorry to hear about Jacqueline Scott's passing. She was a pistol.
Thanks, Col. It was sad to watch Jackie's decline during her last couple of years. She was truly an amazing actress that everyone wanted to work with and a dear, dear friend on mine since first meeting her for an interview on location in Florida for EMPIRE OF THE ANTS.
@@AWordonWesterns I take some solace in the fact they leave behind a large body of work that we and future generations can continue to enjoy.
Okay, this was just so much fun! The only thing that could have made this better, for me, was to have been present in the room, watching it live! Rob, you do such a wonderful interview--which are more like conversations with old friends, allowing everyone to reminiscence about their experiences, and to shine a little warm light for all to enjoy. Now, before I get too sappy, thank you, Rob, for sharing with us.
Thanks for noticing, Sue. That's what I try to do, have a conversation rather than a Q&A interview.
I am so grateful to have Rob Word as the host for this series. His resume and knowledge far surpasses the actors and actresses he has on the show. He is a blessing to watch.
Thanks, but you're too generous, itsme. It's all about the guests and their wonderful memories.
Ed Asner has acted in a lot of movies and television series. He goes way back and he's still around, amazing.
And still working! I recently went to a One Man Show (before the shut down) and he was TREMENDOUS!!!
"you didn't see a Goddam thing! ya little weasel. you didn't see a Goddam thing"! -Ed Asner as Guy Bannister w/ Jack Lemmon , in JFK.
Another one! Fantastic! Thanks Mr. Rob Word. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you, Rob. It was superb to see Jacquline Scott pop in to make this one a double header. Take care, Rob.
Thank you Rob for more great memories. I look forward to each new one.
Thanks, Linda.
ANOTHER, great episode of A Word on Westerns! Great job Rob. I always look forward to our Sunday-morning treat of A Word on Westerns. Hope you are having fun with it, and hope you keep it up. Thanks.
Thanks, Bob. I'll try and keep it up til they drag me away to Boot Hill!
Rob, another terrific trip down memory lane. It’s was great to see Ed so mentally alert with regards to movies and shows he was in. Some these days can’t remember what they did two movies back. It was great to see Ms Scott up on stage and the by play between her and Ed. Thanks for another great video from Down Under.
Thanks, Bob. Ed turned 91 yesterday!
@@AWordonWesterns Wow that’s fantastic. On another subject Rob. Did Morgan Woodward being in Cool Hand Luke, did it give his career a boost. On another channel I subscribe to spent 2 episodes on showing the places that Cool Hand Luke ( History Hunters ). It was terrific ego see as well as reminisce Strother Martins famous quote as well as seeing plenty of stills with Morgan’s sunglasses.
I just saw the episode on Gunsmoke with Ed Asner as the renegade Sergeant. One of my favorite episodes. He always played a nasty bad guy. Great interview.
Thanks, Thomas.
REST EASY, Jackie. I remember the one where she was alone w/ her kids and a gang on the run invades her home, and Festus has to pretend to be her man. he's been seen in town as Deputy. she tells him his face "ain't likely to be forgotten". when he adds "I reckon you're right.", she interrupts by saying "it's a good face". what a line. delivered in a flawless way, at a time when the characters have just met, and aren't sure they even have long to live. Thanx, Rob!!
Thanks, Tony. Ken's and Jackie's chemistry was so real that there was talk of having her return as that character for a sequel. She appeared in 8 episodes of GUNSMOKE!
so glad this walk-on exists, after hearing about her passing. thanx agin, Rob. see ya directly.
Priceless. ... Thank you for these great vids.
Thanks for watching, Maverick!
I heard when they were making El Dorado John Wayne would only refer to him as, "That New York actor."
You got that right, chard. Check out our episode with Ed on EL DORADO.

Ed Asner I think just exaggerated being a lovable curmudgeon to portray Low Grant. Even in Bad Guy roles he always had that deadpan delivery that with slight vocal inflections changed how his lines were interpreted. Menace, Sarcasm, Humor, and Loneliness, were all conveyed by his physicality in the way he held his body, and use of his voice. I think he's always been a lovable curmudgeon who just dials it up and down when he wishes.
Thanks, Jim. that's called talent.
Can't believe Ed Asner is still alive! I actually have an autograph picture from him from his days as "Lou Grant"
Me, too, Denii. He turned 91 YESTERDAY!!!
A great interview with one of the best good guy/ bad guy of all time. Watching it makes me think the role of Lou Grant wasn't much of a stretch for him. Hard to tell where Ed Asner ends and Lou Grant begins. Thanks Rob, you always do such a great job with these interviews!!
Thanks, takk
That was great Rob.
I loved that.
Ed Asner made me laugh so much in this.
One of his shows my dad would watch was Lou Grant.
And I'll never forget a scene I walked in on, Lou was being pulled over,
The officer asked him if he had any thing to drink, and he says "Yeah, a couple at happy hour, but I didn't stay long enough to get happy,". .....
After watching him today, I think that is just him. Lol.
And I heard something else today I hadn't heard before,
I didn't catch that before that Duke wanted to play "Patton" that's the first time I heard that.
Thanks again Rob for an awesome interview. 👍
We really liked LOU GRANT, too. Great series.
He voiced Granny Goodness is the DCAU stuff. Which was absolutely brilliant casting.
Great interview. Thanks for sharing it.
Our pleasure, Ace.
Another great program. Loved that extra guest, too.
Loved this interview with Ed Asner and surprise visit with Jacqueline Scott.
This was soooo entertaining Rob!!!! I really enjoyed it!! Thanks for another great Word on Westerns!!!💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
So much fun in a Sunday morning
Thanks, Philip. We try.
Hello to Mr Rob Word 🙂
Thank you for asking Ed about my favourite show the Fugitive with David Janssen,(the twitcher🤭)
PLEASE 🙏 could ask Kurt Russell (if you have already, perhaps you could show us the interview) about the Fugitive, Janssen and Barry Morse. Also could you ask him about Fess Parker + TV show Daniel Boone, The Virginian, and Dennis the Menace, that would be great
he was also in high chaparral, Gunsmoke etc
😊 All the best
I would LOVE to have Kurt as a guest to talk about all of his work, h h. Did you see my interview with Tim Matheson regarding their series, THE QUEST? Tim had many nice things to say about working together.
@@AWordonWesterns I haven't seen that interview, I will watch it asap, thanks ☺️
@@AWordonWesterns I think a lot of us would love to see Kurt interviewed. I'm going to try and get a copy of Bone Tomahawk. I love his other movie Westerns, though I'm too young for when he was in the TV ones. His films with John Carpenter are awesome too, casting him opposite Lee Van Cleef in Escape from New York was genius.
@@AWordonWesterns just curious did you ever meet/interview James Arness? I love hearing stories about him - never get tired of James Arness 💓
Never did like his politics, but I would love to sit and have a beer with this endearing guy.
That was good. I had to laugh when you lost control of your own interview. Ha!!! She was cute.
Ed has been such a great actor over the years. Really enjoyed the interview.
Thanks, Dave.
Wow, this was a great interview. They all are, but this one is outstanding. Jackie Scott was a beautiful person not only on the outside.
I had a huge case of Deja Vu watching this. In 2005 I had the privilege to be in "Resurrection: The J.R. Richard Story" filmed in Houston, Texas with Charles Durning. He took all of us (it was a small cast) to his hotel where he wined and dined us all while regaling stories as varied as his POW (and other WWII experiences) to hilarious stories of fellow actors on screen and Broadway. He told some of the most un-PC jokes you'd ever bust a gut over and like Mr. Asner, went where his memories took him in the conversation. Let me share one of the things with your audience that he made a point of telling us. He asked what we thought the greatest western ever made was and around the table we all gave our opinions. Mine was "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" with a near tie to "The Big Country". Others were "How the West was Won", "The Searchers" or "Stagecoach" Mr. Durning agreed they all had merit but his personal choice was "Shane" which no one could argue. Thank you for this post.
Thanks for your memories, PO. You might enjoy this coming Sunday's AWOW. I've got two of the THE BIG COUNTRY director William Wyler's adult children, Catherine and David, as my guests talking about Wyler's silent western films and continuing their conversation about THE BIG COUNTRY. Check out their earlier episode.ruclips.net/video/JSlYxvlAG-0/видео.html.
My favorite Ed Asner scene was when Mitchum bashed him in the face with the Winchester, if Marshall Dillon would have pounded Asner a little more that would have been my favorite scene instead of a close second. Very credible bad guy.
Ed Asner. Wow. Still with us. Never thought he would out live mary tyler moore . He is a great great actor and a swell guy.
It always amazes me, week after week you get such great guests. Jackie Scott appearing was so good, when she smiled a certain way I could see her as she was thirty years ago! I do enjoy Sunday mornings more with your videos👍😊!
Thanks, slick. Glad you enjoyed it
❤️❤️❤️ THESE OLD PEOPLE ARE SOOOO MUCH FUN, tanx
I laughed so much with this one! Thank you, Rob.
Man I'm sitting here connected to a slew of drugs doing chemo. The nurse comes by and asks how I'm doin? I pull my mask down and respond with a huge smile, laughing my self off like crazy. I've always loved Ed Asner but this is such an outstanding and entertaining episode I can't contain myself.. This is just what the doctor ordered. Thanks!
I'm glad we could put a smile on your face, jw. Take care!
I have been mostly indifferent to Ed Asner but he is a GREAT interview. As an aside, I knew John Wayne best as an older man and am continuously amazed seeing those early clips of him , just how gorgeous he was as a young man!
Rob, I hope it didn't require any spunk to have Ed Asher come on your show. Lou Grant hates spunk!
I tried my best to suppress my spunk and convert it to enthusiasm.
A great episode. I love this episode.
Another great episode, Rob! It was a delight to hear Jacqueline Scott chime in from the peanut gallery! How sad that we're lost her. I absolutely *loved* how she died in Charlie Varrick. I thought that her performance and brief appearance endured throughout the entire film, as motivation for Walter Matthau's character.
Thanks, Jeffrey. You're right about her in CHARLEY VARRICK. It was a shock that lasted through the entirety of that very solid film.
My pick will always be John Wayne.
Great video with Ed Asner and the stories involving Gunsmoke and to see the great actress Jacqueline Scott as they both have had great careers and gave so much to the viewers!👍
Glad you enjoyed it, David. Thanks
Just getting around to watching this, I didn’t realise he was in so many western tv shows, he was brilliant as Bart Jason in el dorado, one of my favourite westerns, your interviews with actors are so natural and entertaining, they are bringing a lot of joy , thanks rob , keep up the good work 👍
This is great. Thanks as always for doing these. If we ever get past the apocalypse, can regular people come to the Autry for your shows?
Yes. The more the merrier. Don't know when we will be able to resume production but all fans are welcome and it's...FREE!
@@AWordonWesterns that would be great. Save me a spot when this is all over
Just amazing action beautiful video thank you so much love 💕 its 💕💕🙏🏿🙏🏿👍🏽👍🏽.
You're an Angel. Thanks for watching.
Authentic charming interview with all the spontaneity one could hope for!
Was this the director’s cut. 🧐
Ha! Loose with lots of laughs. That's the way I like it. thanks, Vernon.
Yeah, I remember that Fugitive episode with Kurt Russell as Girard's kid too. Playing a little stool pigeon who Kimble (being a good judge of character) outsmarts in the end. No way you'd think of him ever playing Wyatt Earp in a classic Western like Tombstone. And being such a great actor in the genre, as good as Eastwood in my opinion. He was the best part of Tarantino's Hateful Eight for example, and more recently in Bone Tomahawk, a very underrated western I liked a lot.
Fun show with Ed and Jackie, along with Kurt having that Fugitive connection...
maybe the best non Western show of that era.
BONE TOMAHAWK was a nice surprise. THE SEARCHERS meets APOCALYPTO!
@@AWordonWesterns Yeah, the horror element made it particularly unique. Done plausibly without being too much of a clash of genres the way "Cowboys and Aliens" was. A film I didn't care much for personally.
Sorry to read in your comments that Jaqueline Scott passed away.
Ed Asner makes a good bad guy.
What a great interview Asner is hilarious.
WOW.. this wonderful Robert. My goodness... just wonderful. Thank you!
Thanks, Crow. Glad you enjoyed it
Great interview, I would have liked to have heard him talking about Robert Mitchum too. The famous Mitchum quote about Wayne "He's probably going to get buried in those 4 inch lifts" ;-)
I cried watching those two...I love how gracious you are Rob and let them roll. Just great stuff.
john wayne #1.
i remember her from a gunsmoke with claude akins as a widow with jodie foster as her kid. talented lady
That was a good one, MsB.
Gunsmoke was a great show. They don't know how to make them anymore, so sad.
R.I.P. Ed Asner. You will live forever in our memories, thanks to AWOW, and Recordings.
3:47 Been there, had that happen, while riding bareback. Spiteful Pine Branch tried to keep me 'hanging' around. 👍👍🤠
Ed speaking of Jim Arness's intimidating size with Ed at 5' 9", James Drury who's listed at six foot, in reminiscing on being hired for his first Gunsmoke, and I suppose feeling like a midget next to Arness even at that height and not wanting to be dwarfed in every scene, insisted first thing on having lifts put in his boots before appearing in any shot with Jim. Which may explain why neither Alan Ladd or Mickey Rooney ever did a Gunsmoke.
Rooney did do a RAWHIDE with Clint Eastwood. Andy Hardy meets Dirty Harry.
@@olive6405 Haw! Musta missed that one.
@Erich Von Wachter neocommie purge. Thanks for asking.

Amacing actor still strong he Was just in an episode of bluebloods 92 Boy he is strong in voice and body great voice May he 123 thanks Word for this 😊 😊 i realy enjoy every moment have a wonderfull Day
Really enjoyed that.... Thank you Mr. Word🙏
Recently stated watching Trackdown after hearing it talked about on Word on Westerns. It’s Good!
I always thought Culp was cool.
Ed Asner is still bigger than life.
What a kind man Ed Asner was.
I loved this interview. What an amazing career Ed Asner has had. I recognized Ms. Scott instantly. What a beautiful woman and fine actress.
I've never particularly been a fan of Ed Asner, oh his work is ok, but his politics always overshadowed his work to me.
However, I did enjoy him in this interview and it helped temper my feelings, a little, about him personally.
Agreed. He did not have to hide his politics as conservatives have to do today in order to work. He belongs in any western hall of fame, as well as any bad guy hall of fame, which there ought to be one. A Great Villains awards program needs to be created.
Ed is awesome. He is from the K.C. area. And yes he has a great voice.
Ed Asner one of the greats!
Great interview ... I'm loving these ... keep up the good work!
Thank you, Lee. Will do!
R.I.P ED YOU WERE A GREAT ACTOR.
Given so many of the comments, I must say that I've always enjoyed (the supremely talented) Mr. Asner's politics. While I abhorred Mr. Wayne's politics, I always found a way to enjoy his talents.
Love this man.
God rest her soul. Lovely lady.

Ed Asner is such a great man and actor - also a great environmentalist. Jacqueline Scott was so beautiful.
I meet Ed on the set of the Bachelor with Chris O donnell .i was one of one of the Brides
Patten would have been a different movie with John Wayne. Still a good movie .
That was wonderful.
Thanks, MM. Ed's a pistol!
Name another host who would give up his seat.
Ha, SueU. Anytime for Jackie! Sadly she passed away over the summer. I'm editing a memorial tribute to her and others that we lost last year for tomorrow's AWOW.
It's interesting that Ed didn't rate David Jansen's acting because Laurence Olivier thought he was terrific.
R.I.P. Ed Asner 🌟 🙏
Thank you for your videos
Glad you like them!
Happy 91st!
Rob, a video about some of your memorabilia might be of interest.

Sure it, Steve. Thanks. I'm editing my 1977 interview with Ed now to post on this Sunday's AWOW. I'm embarrassingly attired.
Oops! Asner.
Ed Asner doesn't look 91 more like 75.
Heck, I'm 73!!
@@AWordonWesterns You look good for 73. I am just a few years behind you.
Always respected Ed Asner and Al Lewis as far as their politics go. Even though, I tend to be conservative, both of them are honest and thoughtful liberals. Aside from Jimmy Dore, it's difficult to find them these days.
Rob you'll have to give long odds on that bet.
