What a score. These two golden age talents in one sitting! The stories they could tell would fill a dozen interviews. Please get them back as often as you can. I just watched the Searchers again last night. Now after seeing this, I can't resist the urge to go another round with Rio Grande. Aww, who am I kidding? It has to be the entire trilogy, right? This stuff never gets old. Bravo Rob!

Thanks, niknik. It was terrific to have them together. I did another session with them at the Williamsburg Nostalgia Festival which was also very enjoyable. I’m working on next Sunday’s AWOW, also about Duke, and Patrick joins me to talk about the John Wayne Exhibition in Fort Worth.

@@AWordonWesterns That sounds fantastic and I'll be waiting for that one to drop for sure. FYI, You're probably aware of this but The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was just released on 4K a few days ago. Hard to believe that this is the only film of Duke's out on 4K. There ought to be about a dozen of his films out by now. Might be a good time to toss out a quickie segment on it if you have something in the vault or perhaps you touch on it with your upcoming interview with Patrick. At any rate, thanks for all you do to keep the Western flag flying. We really do appreciate your hard work!!!

My wife asked why I enjoy the western's so much. All I could think of was that there was this ethical character about them. A clarity of purpose and a sense of completion. A job needed to be done and it got done right. Whatever it was that needed to be resolved was correctly resolved. And unlike our world today, I find them reassuring. That generation that saw 2 World Wars, the Roaring 20's and the Great Depression were tested by fire. And, It all came through in their personalities. Great interview Rob. Thank You. However, The 3 Musketeers is still being worked on!!

Loved “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” and “Red River”. All of John Wayne’s early pictures with his horse, Duke. His birthday was celebrated on Saturday, this past Memorial Day weekend on GRIT extra and on OUTLAW TV, the latest all Westerns OTA TV. Wonderful pictures. Loved John Agar and Ben Johnson as well. Loved that John Wayne had many of his friends star in his pictures. “Hatari” was panned; but, is also a favorite. John Wayne was a true American and a man to be admired. Patrick Wayne exhibits many of his father’s qualities as well as character.

I'm loving these interviews! One thing that sometimes gets overlooked in regards to the Searchers is it's relation to Rock and Roll history. Upon seeing the film, Buddy Holly was inspired to write That'll Be the Day, the phrase that John Wayne utters a few times in the film. Its probably one of the first instances of a film inspiring something that became a pop culture icon.

Hey, that was great! And perfect timing, as I just read Jarman's book last week. "Rio Grande" has always been one of my favorites in the John Ford canon. Fabulous script, beautiful camera work, and very convincing acting. I realize that it was just a requirement for "The Quiet Man," but Ford wasn't capable of making throwaways, and this turned out to be a tremendous wrap-up to the so-called "Calvary Trilogy." Thanks once again, Rob!

Guessing you won't be riding with Claude's wife in the style of the ancient Romans though, will you Rob?
That has to be one of the all time greatest stunts performed in any western, especially to think that Claude, Ben, and Dobe actually did it themselves. Although I seriously doubt that any of the actual ancient Romans ever had the nerve to try it.
This episode of AWOW was a standout among standouts, a very special treat with Claude and Pat sharing those wonderful memories of Duke, Ford and those great classic films they appeared in.
And that Overland Stage on display there at the Autry.
Hmmm... I wonder if it could be the very same one Ransom Stoddard rode to Shinbone and was rudely dragged off of by that sagebrush ruffian, Liberty Valance.

Another truly fantastic conversation between about film. As usual you ask the right questions to get remembrances that just don't happen any where else. Your quests also play off each other to make or accentuate points. This adds a human element that most film interviews never explore. After all it's the human element that makes what is seen on the screen truly screen interesting, when placed into context with the off camera interactions. Just an enjoyable segment to view.
