Actually, this Ukraine war probably saved Boris Johnson's political career as a Prime Minister. Right before the start of this war, his approval rating was at the lowest point mainly due to the Lockdown party scandal. Then when the war started, there was absolutely no time or effort for any deeper investigation.

@Stiff Upper LipNah, I don't think that NATO would be that stupid to not to evacuate a high ranking general in time. By the way, Kiyv itself is not a threatened city anymore now that the russians have withdrawed their forces from the whole of Northern Ukraine. I think the real reason for this visit is heavy arms lease to Ukraine, like combat vehicles or planes. Thhings that are very sensitive to discuss via phone.

Probably not the SAS, their function isn't protection for the prime minister. Putting military personnel inside of Ukraine's borders during this conflict is a risk the UK can't take, Johnson would've had a security detail that isn't officially attached to the military, yet functionally is equipped and trained like a conventional special forces unit.

@@davidmccann9811 That's your loaded opinion, I totally disagree and so do the Ukrainians. Don't you get it, great leaders are like Boris easy to mock but come crunch time they don't hold back, like most of the feeble so called statesmen of the world,(paper tigers). You could have a leader full of pride, someone who will not tolerate being mocked. A stern authoritarian who will crush any opposition. Sounds a bit like Putin. What do you think is destroying alot of Russian tanks and aircraft, it is British weapons that Boris is making sure Ukraine gets so they can defend themselves, not just pumping the flesh. Even if he was just pumping the flesh (which he weren't), show me another world leader walking through Kiev with their President. It will mean so much to Ukraine to have the Prime Minister of Britain walking through their capital during this time.

fun fact: In Russia and Ukraine, calling a person a rooster is a terrible insult. this implies that the man is used as a woman. I don't understand why Zelensky and Johnson are holding roosters? zelensky knows the meaning of this word, johnson should be more enlightened about the culture of other countries😌

What's going on in Ukraine. 10 steps to war
    1. Ukraine is a formation first appeared in Soviet times as a connection of different lands: Russian, Polish, Hungarian. Ukranians themselves have allways been the part of Russian nation with a specific dialect. The word "Ukraine" comes from Russian "near the edge".
    2. First sings of nationalism appeared back then, in Soviet times. But the majority of people lived as One big family. During the WW2 some nationalists such as Bandera, collaborated with the nazis. They fought with their own people and are known for being much crueler then the nazis. Such war crimes as Babiy yar, Volyn, Khatyn, Rovno etc, when thousands of jews, gypsies and Soviet civilians who supported Red Army were shot, burned and slaughtered. Thats why "bandera" is the sinonym of "traitor".
    3. When Soviet Union fell, the new born country Ukraine was torn and robbed by oligarchs and mafia. So was Russia. Most people lived poorly. Land, factories, mineral resourses became forreign property. Unlike Ukraine, Russia got a strong leader who took a slow and uneasy course to the sovereignty. Meanwhile Ukraine had several protests called Maidans that overthowed their governments. But nothing really changed because each time one oligarchic regime was thrown by another.
    4. On February 2014 there has been another Maidan. Besides civilian protestors, the main force of Maidan were neo-nazis who clashed with the Police. Even BBC made a film about neo-nazi threat in Ukraine! Listen to a guy talking about "pure nation" and "Russians must go to Russia" ruclips.net/video/5SBo0akeDMY/видео.html
As a result, Ukrainian president fled the country on February 22nd. Obviously it was a coup. Southern and Estern regions were against it.
    5. On March the 11th the Parliament of Crimea proclaimed its independence. On March 16th the people of Crimea had a referendum with only two questions: "do you wish to join Russia?" "do you wish to join Ukraine?" More than 95% voted "yes" on the first question. Russia did not introduce its troops to Crimea, because they already had been there for more than 10 years, by the official agreement between Russia and Ukraine. They only provided safety of the people who were making their choice.
    6. In other parts of Ukraine people protested against the coup but these protests were savagely supressed. The most violent episode was in Odessa on May 2nd when pro Russian protestors were locked and burned alive ruclips.net/video/VEWUADkyIiA/видео.html
The murderes were never punished. There were many other cruel episodes in Mariupol, Kharkiv, Slavyansk, Lugansk, Donetsk
    ruclips.net/video/bQ5H9S2pv08/видео.html
    ruclips.net/video/Q_UiZG4ZO5c/видео.html
    ruclips.net/video/4XnowJnIn8E/видео.html
The activists were being kidnapped, killed, often tortured by neo-nazi who were never punished. Gradually the protests were supressed.
    7. In two eastern Donbas regions: Donetsk and Lugansk the protestors succeded. Many volounteers came from other parts of Ukraine and from Russia and formed militia in May 2014. They declared self determination. Ukrainian government sent troops to surpress "the terrorists". But Russia did not introduce troops there and insisted on a dialog between Kiev and Donbass. Instead Ukrainian forces attacked Donbass cities and villages killing lots of civilians. Wich doesnt make any military sence. ruclips.net/video/ANNhDKGjNK8/видео.html
In total more than 3 000 civilians were killed during this war, 150 children among them. Entire losts made 14 000 people during 8 years since 2014. OSCE observed this conflict and has lots of reports on its website
    www.osce.org/ru/special-monitoring-mission-to-ukraine
But Russian troops were never recorded as a side of this conflict.
    8. Negotiations took place in Belarus capital Minsk in 2014 and 2015. Besides pulling back the military forces and not using heavy artillery, Minsk agreements obliged Kiev to give Donbass particular status. The agreements were signed by Ukraine, Donetsk, Lugank and OSCE's and Russia's ambassadors. The text of the protocol web.archive.org/web/20220202172746/peacemaker.un.org/ua-ceasefire-2014
None of these agreements were fullfilled by Ukrainian side.
    9. Meanwhile in Ukraine the nationalist ideology became a mainstream. Facts and history were misrepresented. Russia was declared an enemy by media and even government, school books taught children to hate the Soviet past and admire Bandera as a national hero and a liberator. Russian language was no longer the state language although not all Ukranians can speak Ukrainian fluently. There were formed ultra-right batalions called Aidar and Azov who took part in "antiterrorist operation".
ruclips.net/video/YXKCEyW_pcUT/видео.htmlhe Ukrainian Army was trained by foreign instructors and was supplied by more and more weapons. This did not look like the end of war, despite the promises of a new president Zelensky. Of course many civilians lived normal lifes and preferred not to mention that somewhere in their country people were still beeing killed almost every day, and not to mention dangerous mistakes of Ukranian politics. Such as the intention to join NATO or to have nuclear weapons that was declared in January 2022. But they should have.
    10. On 21 February 2022 President Putin signed a decree recognizing the DPR and LPR and treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance. The next day two republics appealed for military help against military forces of Ukraine. President Putin declared demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. But emphasized on trying to avoid civil victims because Russian and Ukranians are one people.
That's a very short story of how this "unexpected dirty invasion" began on 24 February for those who did not follow the events in this part of the world. And this is only about Russia and Ukraine. The rest is geopolitics wich makes the situation hundreds of times more complicated.

Firstly, the lands of Ukraine were taken forcibly by Russian rulers as they took Siberia and the Swedish lands that St Petersburg is now built on. In other words, the land called Russia today is actually the Russian Empire. However, unlike the British who gave independence to countries in their empire, Russia is trying to recapture lost members such as Ukraine, a country it ruled very cruelly sending a lot of its population to Labour camps in Siberia and starving the rest.
