Just to let you know, a major government report was published last week that showed over 2,300 children (that we know of) were sexually abused by 884 individual abusers at 308 schools operated by 24 different religious orders in Ireland. This after earlier reports of hundreds of Catholic priests abusing children emerged about 20-25 years ago, whose abuse was covered up by the church. There's now an enormous feeling of collective guilt over these revelations among people of faith in Ireland, and the phenomenon of Burke I think stems from this; how can Christians feel good about themselves yet at the same time they know this happened? This is why there's deflection. It's a way of psychologically coping with the knowledge that there were vast numbers of children sexually abused by clerics of many different cloths, for decades if not centuries, which in turn resulted in a rapid decrease in religiosity in Ireland, church attendance dropped massively since c. 1995. There's now very few who chose to become priests, overseas priests from Africa are now brought to Ireland to fill the gap. In turn, those who remain steadfast in their faith tend, in my experience, to be more religious than before. Essentially he couldn't take the money but then not do the job. It was not about his religion at all, he signed a contract as a teacher to comply with their ethos and any directions they gave. He refused a direction that he was given and they had the right to terminate him.His religious issues were considered private and by taking the contract he was committing to fulfil his duties regardless of his beliefs, or he could leave his position.

It is his claim that this was because of his religious beliefs, we don't know the real reason, and his claim does not make anything a fact.But let's take his argument that he should not be required to recognise transgender persons because of his religious belief.To take that position on religious grounds is therefore religious persecution of transgender persons. As a teacher it is an abuse of his position.You can't have it both ways.

Your comment is somewhat skewed. You are using an assumed position which is that the majority in Ireland are against allowing an individual the right to decide their gender. That assumed position is clearly false given the referendum votes in the last 15 years.
