I love how Big John explains that he won't call a foul if you get tagged while trying to abuse the grounded opponent rule. I've often wondered about that. John understands that the rule is for safety, but he won't let a fighter use it in a petty way in order to get a foul called on his opponent. Awesome stuff.
+Jay C For real. No BS. Complete professional. I also like that he tells fighters that if they are deep into a submission then they can try to fight it if they want but just to know that they proceed at their own risk of being injured and facing a long medical suspension. Basically if you know that you can't get out of a submission then it is probably better to tap and save your body to fight another day rather than get seriously injured and put your entire career at risk. And the respect thing is so true. Even if you don't like your opponent those refs are not going to put up with you behaving in an unprofessional manner such as holding onto a choke when they tell you to let go. That goes outside the rules, puts fighters in danger, and they won't tolerate it. It is the strict enforcement of the rules that makes mma a respectable sport instead of a disgusting brawl. More refs need to be like Big John.
Who don’t love big John , there’s a gentleman sportsman fight and a dirty fight , John only refs the fore . Love the way he just says “ you don’t want us to intervene “ room just goes silent, they know he got 7 styles of I’ll mess you up
There were only a few rules, at that time. No biting, fish-hooking, gouging & nobody apart from the vanquished opponent (assuming he was conscious) or the ref could stop the fight. As far as elbow strikes were concerned, there were basically no restrictions, regarding direction of elbow force. Also, hair pulling, groins strikes & either kneeing or kicking a downed opponent's head were all legal.
like BJM but 4:55 disappointed me. it's not illegal to swear at your opponent and you shouldn't be forcing beliefs on fighters, just the rules. it's like steve mazzagati telling nick diaz at ufc 47 "no talking!"
I'd have had one question: when we end up in my guard and i want to stay there and work on a submission from my back, is there anything i can do to nut get stood up when the other guy is being passive?"
Get the submission. Or make progress towards. The refs are not dumb. They know how most submissions work so they will see you slowly making progress towards it or attempting to grab it a few times and not stand it up just for him being passive if he is about to get caught.
qwqwqwqw99 conservative authoritarians…. people who are conservative with their use of authority, yes I'm all for that. its hard to find a real republican any more
Huge lie about disqualifying a fighter if he holds a submission on and a referee touches you to stop. BJ did it, Babalu did it, Palhares does it, etc. They all won their fights w/o disqualification.

Seriously, UFC should put a video on the page where John explains all of this to the fans.

It's right here thou
Johns the only ref ive seen get cheered for when being presented
Herb Dean
Please Jon Jones loves Mazzagati
U haven’t seen that many fights
Dean too
He fckn wrote the rules of the sport we love so much... That's why.
"Are you ready? GET BACK IN THAT CORNER! GET BACK IN THAT CORNER!"
i would not asleep in a class when someone lectures like mr. big mccarthy
Big John, the best! Liked him instantly already from the early UFC decades ago.
Exactly the true professional I assumed he would be....simply awesome, and good to know the fighters are in good hands with him.
“You are not going to like the way we break it”
John McCarthy should be the Ref in every fight. Period!
he loves cage pushing. if anyone can cage push, they can win the match by nothing but cage pushing
Or Herb Dean
If you're strong enough to hold your opponent down you win
@@MYERZ08 big john was a way better ref than herb dean.
@@thepistolguy859 coz he's the one who created the majority of the unified rules so he's the most knowledgeable ref we'll ever have..
I was disappointed by him not starting like " are you ready? Lets get it on"
"Yeah,no shit"
Absolutely a perfect fighters meeting. This is how its done
Someone oil up that damn door

Big John for the win!
Someone send this to tim welch with a time tag around 10:00
Big John is the gold standard.
That "back of the head" bit is "must watch / listen" info, for fighters and for fans.
Here: 2:47
I getting flash backs by how he's talking lol.
goodridge vs herrera...where he does the crusifix and the elbows to the head..are the elbows to head allowed in that position?
ears/temple
What were the rules back then?

Simon Preston thank you
lol his "illegal" and "a legal" sound the same
Yeah he really ought to be a bit more clear, for all the non-native English speakers in there.
Man this guy was. A cop too
Bablu got kicked out of the UFC though.. and yes a lot of people hold it an extra second or so after the refs tell them to stop.

"This is a gentlemen's sport no matter what some public people or idiot politicians think."
I never seen Big John McCarthy without a bubble gum in his mouth
It's the rules....
Fouls-
The following are fouls and will result in penalties if committed:
19. The use of abusive language in the fighting area
That scweeky door
That cleaning the mouthpiece thing don't fly anymore, at least that's what I'm seeing lately.
I'd have had one question: when we end up in my guard and i want to stay there and work on a submission from my back, is there anything i can do to nut get stood up when the other guy is being passive?"

i really wanna know the rules with the Rape choke, seems like it could be very effective
BG BAD JHN
brian stann for president big john for sec of state
micky mcfarts So you're big on conservative authoritarians? There's already plenty to vote for.
