As far as Penny/Webber there was a debate simply because in Shaq's rookie year Scott Skiles was very good. Listen I know he's NOT Penny but he avg 15.4-3.7-9.4 vs 3.4 TO and shot over 46%. That's damn good at the PG position. Now Orlando's PF? Revolving door next to Shaq of Tom Tolbert, Anthony Bowie, Jeff Turner all stiffs. Webber would have given them a lineup of Skiles-Anderson-Scott-Webber-Shaq. Keep in mind Orlando didn't go to the Finals until they fixed the PF position by signing Horace Grant. Now he liked to shoot from 15-18 so he fit nicely next to Shaq but who knows maybe Webber would have developed his game around Shaq and fit.
Looking back, I wish GS kept Penny. Because Penny and Shaq were both franchise players. But GS had the better coach in Don Nelson. I think If Penny suffered an injury like he did in Orlando, GS would have made sure he was 100% healed before playing again, unlike the situation that happened in Orlando.
Yeah but Shaq wanted Penny and demanded the team take him. But Orlando was able to get Penny plus draft picks. And the big kicker is that Orlando didn't have the salary cap to pay Webber unless the released an injury plagued Scott Skiles.

Is it an indictment that both Acie Earl and Evers Burns ended up playing with the Sydney Kings at a time when they changed imports almost as often as I changed underwear.....
They traded Webber because he and Shaq would never co-exist properly. Shaq was caping for Penny to come and then started to feel some type of way because Penny was attaining a celebrity that was rivaling his. He won championships with Kobe and still had beef with him and even had problems in Miami. That's with Shaq being the main man on those teams and with those guys being guards. What would happen with Webber in the paint right with him and fighting for boards and the ball right with him. They would've been intriguing to watch but I doubt either Shaq or Webber remain with the Magic past Shaq's free agency in 96.
+Dwight Love Shaq even said himself that he wouldn't been able to co exist with Webber because he felt that they wouldn't have been able to share the ball together.
I remember as a little kid sitting behind the Nets bench screaming "we want Rex" during garbage time of blowouts. Usually it was our Nets being blown out:O(
This is definitely one the biggest "what if" drafts. Webber,Penny would have been 1st ballot HOF'ers (Think Webber will at least get in in the next few years) if not due to injuries .Then guys like Allan Houston,Bobby Hurley also should have had much better careers but didn't due to an injury bug. Then guys like Vin Baker,JR Rider and Van Exel should have had much better NBA career's if not for personal issues. Rider is a guy who could put up 20-25 one night then was not even good enough to be on an NBA roster the next.
Shaq ruined Penny Hardaway's career by leaving Orlando... Think they could've achieved a lot more than with Kobe... Tod Atkinson If the draft was redone, I'd have said Webber gone first, Penny and then Mashburn were the best 3 in the draft, but this draft was pretty damn deep and it was deep for like the next couple of years after.
@@micahsharon2013 Penny didn't necessarily become injury prone. It's just that the first time Penny got injured in the 96-97 season, Orlando didn't allow Penny's knee to fully heal before playing again after he had surgery. He ended up playing 40+ games in the 96-97 season with a knee that was nowhere near 100% and ended up re-injuring his knee in the 97-98 season.
Because it wasn't due to injury. He went on a Mormon mission. David Robinson was drafted in 1987 but didn't get to play until 2 years later because of Navy commitment. His time away didn't hurt him one bit (except cost him 2 years of his prime), so there was no reason to believe it would hurt Bradley.
C Webb: a superstar that is not mentally tough Bradley: being outplayed by other 7'6'' players like Yao and being dunked on by hundred of players Hardaway: a poor man Magic Johnson with injury Marshburn: very good car dealer Rider: had a chance to become Vince Carter but wasted himself with wrong decisions Cheaney: from my school, go Hoosiers! Hurley: an injured Steve Nash Vin Baker: a less athletic and alcoholic Anthony Davis 😂😂😂
Honorable mentions: Alan Houston: injured, and his huge contract ruined entire Knicks team for a long period of time, well into 2010s Luther Wright: Played in NBA for one year and lived on the street for the next couple of decades The other tall international guy: masturbated on the free throw line
Huge mistake in my opinion to trade Webber for Penny. Not that I think Penny was a bad player, far from it in fact but Shaq and Webber would have been incredibly difficult to stop in the NBA back then.
Penny was by far the best player in that draft. Not to mention Orlando also got 3 number one pics from Golden State in this deal. Golden State got robbed. Who could have known Penny would have an injury years later which would derail his career.
Alot of folks thought Penny Hardaway was going #1 cuz of Shaq big mouth running around saying that Orlando is taking Penny, that's who he wants to play with.
This was Reality TV before reality TV. I cannot imagine how insane would Orlando Magic fans have reacted to trading Webber for Anfernee Hardaway (he was a projected top 5 pick but like at 4 or 5, not Top 3)
Would have been interesting but then Philly might not have ever got A.I. 3 years later. But that would be a scary team if they still did. Penny at point,A.I. at SG,Stackhouse at SF,Coleman at PF. And some bum at center
Luther Wright.....all that strength and skill in a 7'2 frame....all wasted due to cocaine ...kinda like Chris Washburn in the late 1980s this was a big man who could have been something special if he just didnt have a 5 cent head on his shoulders. Yeah he had battled weight also....but this was a guy who came out of college early because he had problems that was known about ....the Jazz took a gamble on his vast potential in the first round because they needed a big man to take heat off Karl Malone inside.....and Wright would have been that man if he didn't do like many players in the 70s and 80s and spend his rookie salary on drugs the moment he started getting paid...the Jazz knew it was a gamble...but once it was obvious he was back using and for sure had not beat his drug addiction the Jazz dumped him and because of his reputation for drug problems going back to his high school days no other team ever gave him a chance after that. He is homeless now....which is sad....this guy had talent not just 7'2 and this was a generation where if a player had that kind of size and could really play he could dominate....I always hated players like Luther Wright when I was growing up for wasting their talent...now that I know that to this very day Wright like Chris Washburn in North Carolina did also...ended up homeless and walking the streets looking for a fix...it all just makes me sick to my stomach...I feel sad...not for the players like them who wasted their God given talent and wasted their potential hall of fame careers or at least a long NBA career and they wasted it to ghet high and be a street walker looking to steal for drugs.....its just a waste and the fans of their generations are the real ones who got cheated....this guy could easily if he just half way lived up to his potential would have made a giant difference in Utah for the JOhn Stockton and Karl Malone team that needed a little more push to win a title....If Wright had not loved drugs more than his basketball talent....he would have been a giant upgrade over a few years later draft pick named Greg Ostertag the Jazz made still looking for a big man to help Karl Malone inside....Ostertag would have never even been drafted if Wright just had stayed clean. and Wright was a good enough offensive player inside to have been a weapon there as well as defense shot blocking and rebounding.....Ostertag was never anything but a shot blocker who half the time wasnt even interested in playing. Utah fans and basketball fans of the 90s were cheated thanks to Luther....therefore I feel no sympathy for him as he walks the streets still looking for a fix and still homeless to this day......he did it to himself it was the life he chose to live

I really wish Penny could have stayed in Golden State and Webber in Orlando... looks like Shaq didn't want Webber on his team and things didn't work out for Webber in Golden State but Hardaway could have done well in both places. What happened to picks 9 - 14 ??
Almost teared up for a sec with the ovation for webber
+Isufa Webber and Shaq could have co-exist Webber's game was out on the perimeter where he could be effective
coming out of college his game was inside.
+Dwight Love Shaq even said himself that he wouldn't been able to co exist with Webber because he felt that they wouldn't have been able to share the ball together.
They also didn't think they could sign him, no rookie scale salaries like we have now.
They traded cause shaq WANTED Penny or threatend to sign with another team

55:00 I did NOT know that Rex Waters could dunk!
I remember as a little kid sitting behind the Nets bench screaming "we want Rex" during garbage time of blowouts.
Usually it was our Nets being blown out:O(
1:31:00 what's with the overjoy, Mr. Commissioner? :)
Sam Cassell
I miss this crew on TNT. Bob Neal, Hubie and Doug Collins
What did Bradley do in the two years prior to the draft to propel him to the number 2 pick?
He 7'6" that's it
Morman mission
+Micah Sharon lol. As a penny fan, I use Shaquille as a scapegoat
Nah..come on now
@@micahsharon2013 Penny didn't necessarily become injury prone.
RIP David Stern
@Fries silver is just a dildo out there
1:09:00 I KNEW that A. C. Earl would pan out!!
He didn't pan out. ....
Orlando got a kings ransom for CWebb
4:49 1st Pick
Penny!!!
Nick van excel 2nd round...😂😂😂 all he did was play 20yrs , and some biiiiiiig shots
He definitely was the steal of that's years draft!
But shot 40% FG% career
How was the fact that Shawn Bradley hadn’t played in two years not a gigantic red flag?
Because it wasn't due to injury. He went on a Mormon mission.
David Robinson was drafted in 1987 but didn't get to play until 2 years later because of Navy commitment. His time away didn't hurt him one bit (except cost him 2 years of his prime), so there was no reason to believe it would hurt Bradley.
Wheres Picks 9-14?
C Webb: a superstar that is not mentally tough
Bradley: being outplayed by other 7'6'' players like Yao and being dunked on by hundred of players
Hardaway: a poor man Magic Johnson with injury
Marshburn: very good car dealer
Rider: had a chance to become Vince Carter but wasted himself with wrong decisions
Cheaney: from my school, go Hoosiers!
Hurley: an injured Steve Nash
Vin Baker: a less athletic and alcoholic Anthony Davis
😂😂😂
Plus, Rider is the best rapper in this draft class
Honorable mentions:
Alan Houston: injured, and his huge contract ruined entire Knicks team for a long period of time, well into 2010s
Luther Wright: Played in NBA for one year and lived on the street for the next couple of decades
The other tall international guy: masturbated on the free throw line
+Jiaming Liu Lindsey Hunter was called The Isiah Thomas of the 90s he was Roy Williams worst nightmare while at Kansas.
IU SUCKS!!! #BoilerUp
Vin Baker ruined his career with unecessary weight gain as well.
Huge mistake in my opinion to trade Webber for Penny. Not that I think Penny was a bad player, far from it in fact but Shaq and Webber would have been incredibly difficult to stop in the NBA back then.
They were hard to stop w/ Penny, but Shaq wanted LA and it's big contract. Is what it is...
Penny was by far the best player in that draft. Not to mention Orlando also got 3 number one pics from Golden State in this deal.
Golden State got robbed. Who could have known Penny would have an injury years later which would derail his career.
The NBA Draft Hats now💎💎💎 #VintageCap #Sline #SportsSpecialties
penny my man
Nice!!!!!
Man, Tacko Fall would’ve been a lottery pick back then
Nah big men that tall 7’6” and up never really did well in this era either tacko would’ve been exactly what he is now
@@tyroneweekes1983 thats not what he said
Alot of folks thought Penny Hardaway was going #1 cuz of Shaq big mouth running around saying that Orlando is taking Penny, that's who he wants to play with.
Was the NBA the first who had the drafts in arenas? The NFL took notice for sure
Then they sold themselves short with Gugliota
WHAT A STUD!
Do you guises remember that Doug collins is the 1st pick in the 1973 nba draft selected by the Philadelphia 76ers
This was Reality TV before reality TV. I cannot imagine how insane would Orlando Magic fans have reacted to trading Webber for Anfernee Hardaway (he was a projected top 5 pick but like at 4 or 5, not Top 3)
@ 1:31:00 close your ears Knicks fans...
What if Philly picked Penny Hardaway? History would be so different
Would have been interesting but then Philly might not have ever got A.I. 3 years later. But that would be a scary team if they still did. Penny at point,A.I. at SG,Stackhouse at SF,Coleman at PF. And some bum at center
@@618greenleaf7 a defensive center
@@618greenleaf7 "And some bum at center."
I love that comment.
1:26:50 Ervin Johnson, first round sleeper
Listen to the cheers
Shawn Bradley gets Ric Flair's theme😂
5:05 why is the crowd so loud on Chris webber
12:47 they did Shawn Bradley so dirty (i feel bad for Shawn Bradley)
1:10:04 taking off the cap was cool being in the nba draft
1:31:04 it looks like David stern about to laugh at Sam Cassells face
1:40:00 I wish David stern played in the nba
1:52:37 why does bro don’t speak English
30:13 it's the Children of the Corn
So many what ifs
30:26 was donald trump a security personnel in the palace back in the day?
Jiaming Liu his father built that palace with a small loan of a million dollars.
Huh?
I like how they showed Dallas’ record, and under “needs” it says “quality talent”. In other words, they really sucked. 😂
That's the funniest thing about this video how lazy the graphics were back then. The strengths and weaknesses of the players cracks me up as well. It's so half asses as to the in depth stuff we get today.
wow, Golden State got jacked.
Peter DellOlio especially since CWebb was gone after, basically, just one season.
I really wish Penny could have stayed in Golden State and Webber in Orlando... looks like Shaq didn't want Webber on his team and things didn't work out for Webber in Golden State but Hardaway could have done well in both places. Plus, looking at that class, the Pistons could have had Nick Van Exel or Sam Cassell but settled with Lindsey Hunter, they could have had either Van Exel or Cassell with Alan Houston which could have been great.
3 FIRST ROUND PICKS 😮
Now we have a bunch of James hardens on defense and wannabe Steph Curry's out there
Luther Wright only play 15 games with the Utah Jazz before drug and mental health issues. Look up Luther Wright on RUclips.
