When we have very little choice, or perhaps even no choice, we are very likely to be unhappy.
But as you gain more options, and you have the ability to choose between them, your happiness increases.
So, obviously having choice is good.
But what's interesting, is as you get more and more options, your happiness doesn't keep increasing.
Instead, counter-intuitively, it decreases.
In fact, having too many options to choose from, can be just as bad, as having no options.
So rather than liberating us and making us happier, having a lot of options does the opposite.
Psychologist Barry Schwartz coined this phenomenon, the paradox of choice.
Because more becomes less.

Lessons learned from this video:
1) Reduce options when it's in your hands
2) Lower your expectations a bit so life could surprise you. (Also don't ignore the value of things you already have just because you are focus on what you don't)
3) There is not such thing as the best choice, everything has a postive and a negative side (which bring us to the next lesson)
4) Clarify your priorities before choosing. Your choice will suit you better when you know what you want.
5) Done is better than perfect. To avoid paralysis, remember not choosing is also a choice, and it normally leads you nowhere.

I always say: do it! I watch way to much RUclips videos, and do not spend that much time being creative, and when I then think I get a lot of ideas, and spend way too much time planning and looking for even better ideas. Then I can't start, and when I then finally start, after some time I feel super good just because I'm doing something that matters more than just planning

In business this is called Opportunity cost. More options, more opportunities lost.
@@kriskitt Yes. Opportunity cost is the negative difference (or theoretical loss) whenever one analyzes current return/profit and the higher return/profit if other actions were taken.
If asset A grants 5% a year and you've chosen the asset B which granted 3% a year, you had an opportunity cost of 2% a year by that year.

@@drjp4212 I think most people understand that college is an incredibly important investment, however, the issue is that it can put them into a *lot* of debt. So despite working hard to get into college in the first place, the student needs to pay a lot and risk the high debt.

Great video, I have another suggestion to narrow down too many choices. I used this with my daughter when she was very young and found about six barbie dolls she wanted in the toy store. Instead of trying to decide between all six at once, I had her start with just two and decide between them. Then take the one she picked, add another from the original six and choose between those two, and so on. It didn't take long at all for her to end up with just one, her best choice :)

@@dcgreatman It was about how we can gamify our life and objectives so that we can track our progress and feel motivated to achieve our targets as we get closer to them and also reward ourselves in such a way that the rewards take us course to our ultimate goals and not deviate us, the way it happens in games.
For eg:- We receive an upgrade on a weapon as a reward when we reach a certain level in a game which helps us progress even further but in real life we do the opposite. We may reward ourselves with a sugary/junk product after exercising but it's counter intuitive to our goal of getting fit.

@@ProductivityGuy- He said this himself on a public portal (Buy me a coffee). I also tried a lot to talk with the copyright owner (who reported the channel to YT). Here i know that the guy from BTY was unaware of the copyright issue. He used a lot of graphics without the permission of the owner. I love and trust BTY. He said everything and apologise to the owner and was ready to pay for any stuff he used, but still the owner reported all of his videos and YT suspended it. But luckily after 6 months+, they unsuspend it (maybe the copyright owner withdrawn it). Thanks to @youtube. Now i request BTY to come back.

My friend who overheard this video said : "Well it seems like Mike suffers from the ability to make decisions. He should've manned up and asked the ice cream seller if he could taste the flavors then make a choice." Hard to argue with that logic.
Except that it is completely impractical - unless Mike was willing to buy all the flavours and discard the ones he did not like. That would work (or not!)
Well, dunno how many flavors of ice cream is in your theoretical experiment, but given 18 flavors in the video, tasting all of them kinda ruins the whole idea of buying yourself a portion.
But yeah, there's a pinch of logic in your friend's words. For one exception: it was just an example. In real life choices are harder and most of the times you can't try them all. Just imagine, that the ice cream vendor said "no".
Your friend doesn't get that ice-creams are a simple metaphor here. If it were a job, for example, would he "man up" and ask the 'seller' to try all of them before committing to one? No! Or if he did he'd run the very real risk of ending up being rejected for all of them for being an entitled dick that no-one would want to work with... Instead, he'd have to woman-up and choose the one best for the circumstances at the time.

I heard someone say once that the people who succeed the most are the ones who are less afraid of making mistakes and therefore DO more. Even if one does make mistakes, that’s okay -just keep going and learning. I think it was Sir Ken* Robinson who said that young children are the most creative because they aren’t yet afraid of rejection or failure. What a good lesson to remember! Don’t let your perfectionism or other worries hold you back.
