    I had to watch Frozen in college and critique it with several applied critical theories, we were told to view some films through a Marxist lens, some through an LGBT lens, and for Frozen we were required to critique it with feminist theory. I pointed out some of the horrible messages found in the film, and every single feminist in the room, (professor included), fought against me tooth and nail. First, I noted that Anna specifically and repeatedly blames herself for the times that her sister Elsa lashed out at her with violence. The fems lost their minds, even when I pointed out that in the ballroom scene, Anna tells Elsa "I can't live like this anymore..." To this, Elsa replies " I SAID ENOUGH! " and hurls ice daggers at her sister, the ice daggers overflow the dance floor, forcing the attendees to recoil from the danger. The feminists defended Elsa by stating, "She didn't mean it" "It was an accident" "She can't control it" "She was angry" (Imagine how many feminists would accept any form of "I didn't mean it" or "I hit you because I was angry", etc. from a male attacking a female, no chance anything like that would be considered a valid excuse). After several arguments defending Elsa, I asked for a show of hands, "How many are willing to argue that when a woman says 'I can't live like this anymore' the appropriate response is to yell 'I said ENOUGH!' and proceed to throw something dangerous at her?" The topic was suddenly (and quite conveniently) changed so I mentioned Elsa's lack of accountability for her actions, pointing out that she nearly kills her sister about every 20 minutes throughout the movie and half of those incidents came from Elsa failing to control her own anger, yet Elsa never once apologizes to her sister. Again, they disregard it and marginalize Anna without a second thought in order to defend Elsa. I brought up Elsa's lack of accountability and her irresponsible behavior and at one point my feminist professor went as far as stating "She wasn't raised as a man, so she doesn't understand how to use power" Immediately I asked, "If Donald Trump had said that very thing about Hillary Clinton today, we all know that statement would be unacceptable, does anyone care to explain why it's different when it's a woman saying it?" Guess what happened ...................... subject changed again. If I were to watch that movie with a young child(ren), I would make sure they didn't leave the theater without understanding that it's never your fault when someone loses control of their emotions and hurts you. There were many other things I could have pointed out, but this was no debate - the outcome was guaranteed from the start. This may be an oxymoron to say, but Frozen is a steaming, festering turd and no one should expose their children to it.

      "She wasn't raised as a man, so she doesn't understand how to use power"I'm guessing your professor has never heard of tomboys.

    • @goondocksaints9597
      @goondocksaints9597 6 лет назад +1265

      Well my first thought when she said that was 'what if a man said the exact same thing about a woman'? My second thought was, "If that argument is valid, then either start raising girls as men or bar them from positions of power". If you argue that a woman can't understand power, then you pretty much *have to* agree that women are not capable of handling power. My professor was just reacting on pure emotion, willing to say *literally anything* to try to win the debate. But this is where a lack of accountability rears its ugly head. Being raised as a man, I have been trained to think things through so I'm less likely to say things that can turn around and bite me on the ass. I know better than to say something like my professor said because I have been taught to be accountable for what I say and do. It's not remotely acceptable for men to say, "I didn't mean it that way, I was upset". The difference lies 100% on being accountable and not being allowed to use emotions to excuse stupid actions. This is exactly the same as my earlier point, if I hit my sister I already know that saying "I didn't mean it" or "It was an accident" or "I couldn't control my emotions" will never be accepted as a way to avoid accountability. If women want and deserve to have power, they absolutely must first learn responsibility and accountability. If you respect women and support their 'empowerment' your first action should be to demand accountability from them. Trust me, accountability might be something women don't like or value, but it's not something that is beyond their abilities.

      Honestly, I feel bad for girls, knowing they live in a world where this kind of feminist dogma is allowed. Like, what's wrong with girls just wanting to be normal, and to be like everyone else? Am I seriously the only one who actually considers stuff like that? I bet your professor must hate to see _Inside Out_ - she'd probably think it's misogynist that, for example, the father sends Riley to her bedroom. Because, you know, a man having control over a woman, or some crap like that.

      When you said they changed the topic it made me think back to the comedian Bill Bur, who said women stay on topic when they know they are right but change the topic when they know they are wrong.
      Im sure there is a youtube video with him saying it if you want to listen to it.

      @Goondock Saints
      Regarding the people like the ones that you "debated" with in college; hypocrisy knows no bounds~
      The fact that they had to keep dodging your questions was the 2nd red flag, with the 1st red flag being the fact that they kept attempting to justify women's lack of upholding responsibility.
      What an absurd concept; any honorable person would find that practice of mannerism to be completely unacceptable!
      Even children can be taught how to be responsible from a young age, and yet these "adults" can not; they should be ashamed of themselves.
      The Frozen movie is a disgraceful piece of feminist propaganda; I hate everything that it stands for.
      The very idea of people defending this vile media is the only thing that disgusts me even more than the movie, itself.

      Ok.
      As the swirl around the drain in a sink has new water particles replacing the spot that another one was in, so to does every cell in our body get replaced as time moves forward.
      An example in a city can be a store. It will usually have a cashier, a custodian, some customers. However, the person won't always be the same person occupying those positions. Sometimes the person who is the cashier may even occupy the position of a customer and vice versa. Unfortunately like the swirl in the sink, the store may also ... dissipate.

    • @mojolotz
      @mojolotz 4 года назад +41

      The thing that is "you" is not really the sum of your particles. You are not really a tangible object or else you being dead or alive would not matter but yet you are inherently linked to the particles that make you up. In that way you are a structure moreso than an object because what is "you" is the effect of the states in which those particles exist. Now as a human we add things like memories(past) and dreams(future) to that structure and assign it as being a part of "you" but that is another level of existence that is not covered by your physical structure.
      reading it out now that i wrote it i realize that i suck at explaining... maybe it still helps.

      People often severely underestimate what children are capable of doing and understanding. In the west there tends to be a cultural bias towards treating children as being inept and needing sheltering from what are seen as being complex skill sets and thinking, but in reality it is these things being withheld from them that stunts their capability. Just as an example, the teacher in charge of the local chess club at my local high school wouldn't believe me that I personally had met children as young as six or seven who could easily and consistently beat him and anybody else on the team, he didn't think kids that small were capable of the adaptive thinking needed to apply strategy and tactics. Then he takes the team to an open tournament with no age groups for the first time and they were completely dismantled, with a second grader winning undefeated.

    Girlfriend: So what did you think of the movie?
    Me:

    • @8is
      @8is 4 года назад +20

      This is how I would address my girlfriend -- if I had one...
      So basically I think the first third of Frozen is really good. You could also fit in For The First Time In Forever Reprise in there too and the trolls weren't that great so maybe not them. But anyway, it's like they had a good idea that could really work, but they didn't think it through what implications that idea would bring. It's like you make a good start but you don't really figure out what the idea really means towards the end of the movie. But, what I think Frozen really gets right is how to use good music. Instead of having a song just stand for itself for the sake of it, you use the song to convey the story. After seeing For The First Time In Forever you immediately know the personalities, frustrations, character traits of both Anna and partially Elsa and it helps you grasp the world the movie is set it. I think this is why the good songs are so good, especially within the context of the movie and why the bad songs become so apparently bad. I think even a lot of musicals get this wrong which is detrimental to the flow of the movie. I find just abrupting the flow of information to be really bad for movies. I think how well done the flow of information is done in Star Wars: A New Hope is at least one of the reasons that movie works so well, but it's a bit of an extreme case for various reasons. And it's probably why I really like The Nightmare Before Christmas so much, but I haven't seen it in a while and honestly, I should see episode 4 too.
      You could compare this movie to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Everything until the last third is not really great but it gets the last third really well. Everything with Luke and Darth Vader having a father and son reconciliation is really great. So I don't think you can totally hate these movies because they at least get some parts really well.
      In conclusion, I think for what Frozen does do right it will be remembered because that which it does right is the most memorable part of the movie. You can probably pinpoint everything that happened in the first third but that becomes much harder for the other two thirds. It should be appreciated for what it did well and not what it did bad.

      R.C. Beringuela Frozen was the worst Disney movie I have ever seen. There is no justification for anything that happens. Why does the main character have freezing abilities? why is it that when she freezes her sister on accident that freezing the heart is bad but not the brain? Well don’t worry, because the trolls have the answer, those characters who have no reason to exist, and only show up for that explanation. Oh and, 75% into the film they will throw in a snowman with a NY accent for comedic effect. The bad guy has no justification for being bad, and the writers thought that that would make it more of a twist, when in fact it isn’t a twist but bad writing. God I hate that movie.

      "Malificent" was SOOO much worse. Frozen was subtle enought to at least go over more well rounded kids heads, it being only really dangerous as reinforcment to children already being indoctinated. Malificent, however, blatently shits on the Archetypes, claiming, essentially, that the Overbearing Mother is justified in doing so, and that no kings are good, that a man can only be good and trustworthy when he is weak and harmless, and must stay that way.
      Foul, FOUL film; Doug Walker's politics are generally to the Left, but is too proffesional as a genuine Critic to let them muddle his thinking regarding the archetypes, and was able to break down what was wrong with it in a brilliantly neutral manner. It is a perspective worth seeing.

    We see a lot of that nowadays. Movies, games, songs that are mainly propaganda, with very little art in it. They really push onto you what they want to say. They give you no chance to interpret it in any other way. To the point where it's revolting, and you go "stop telling me what i'm supposed to think". No subtlety at all. Because if a message is subtle, then you create at least 2 interpretations of your work: 1) There is what those who didn't notice the message will think. And 2) There is what those who noticed the message will think. And when you are dealing with propaganda, you can't have that. There can only be one message. We can't trust you to reach the conclusion that we want you to reach if we don't explicitly tell you what to think.

    • @ssjcosty
      @ssjcosty 3 года назад +11

      "They really push onto you what they want to say."
      That's what stories are at their core though, ways of expressing the narrator's view of the world, or a desired or potential state of the world (e.g. seen in fantasy, science fiction etc.). If you look at the Brothers Grimm stories, they had very specific messages for teaching children about the dangers that lurk in the darkness, teaching them about the consequences of disobeying their parents, etc. All those stories were cultural propaganda, just as all the older Disney stories about a valiant prince saving a princess.
      Archetypes exist for several reasons: so that listeners, readers and viewers can culturally relate to and identify with the characters, but also to reinforce the existing culture, traditions and roles in the minds of new listeners/readers/viewers. Many modern storytellers play with archetypes, and try to mix them or discard them, especially when the values the stories express intentionally go against archetypes. Frozen discards some archetypes, but embraces others.
      Of other media that discards archetypes, I can think of movies like The Cabin In The Woods (an obvious one), Moana to some degree, Shrek does it big time, and probably many more that I can't think of off the top of my head. I don't quite understand why Frozen gets so much hate, because I do think that the values it pushes are woven quite nicely into the stories, albeit with several plotholes and questions (what did Elsa eat in her ice castle, where did she poop, how come she can create life?).

    I have had a very bad feeling about Frozen ever since it came out and I’ve never seen it. My 4 year old granddaughter is addicted to everything Frozen. I was warned by my professor of Family Life to avoid everything popular. What the masses cling to and idolize is always going to be a problem. All movies these days seem to have an agenda and are shaping the thinking of our youth. I’m very concerned. If Frozen is loosely based on one of my favorite stories The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson, they’ve got it really wrong. 🙁

Sometime I have the lyrics and full melody complete before recording as well. But I genuinely have no clue about the keyboard, orchestral, or even sometime bass. Even if there is an original vision, it gets tossed more than 95% of the time. I don’t know what I’m doing. The songs assemble themselves in an incredibly unthought out process. Sometimes I’ll have the first 1/4th of the song completely done. I mean lyrics, editing, Layer upon layers of sounds… and I’ll the song based on just 1/4th of it being completed. Then I just fill the rest of the song out. It’s funny how he knows that I don’t know what I’m doing.

Elder futhark letter I is Isa which means Ice. Walter Russell calls that the Mind. The place where all ideas reside and spring from when vibrating. “Where the Northwind meets the sea, there’s a river full of memory.”
    So it seems like Disney did finally tap into the universal truth in the second movie.

    Absolutely would love to see Professor Peterson's take on The Last Jedi vs The original movies. The movies from the 70s and 80s showed Lucas's vision of the Campbell inspires Hero's Journey. The Last Jedi is Kathleen Kennedy's vision of the SJW world of feminism today. It is absolutely amazing what happened with that last movie. My disgust at what happened is what led me to RUclips videos of the opinions of fans... those complaints somehow led me to Jordan Peterson. Thats why I would love to see the analysis. It fits into what he is saying about SJW trying to destroy old archetypes and men in general.

      The point is that Lucas wrote a story based on Campbell's vision of the hero's journey. It's a story telling history that goes back to the first epic poem, The Odyessy. We can all relate to it.
      These new movies only reflect the feminist, radical, post modernism philosophy that has taken over our society. It goes away from traditional story telling. If that is what the public wants, then ok..
      It won't be me, because I can see through this lame transition our society is experiencing. Its making men into women, and that is a bad thing. Men should stop taking it, and stand up and say this is bad. Bad, bad, bad

      mrburns805 Not sure that it is propaganda, just a new vision. It seemed that all of the male characters were terribly flawed, and represented all the bad things you hear today about men, they were either baffoons or overbearing. The women were all heros who sacrificed themselves, had all the answers or saved the men somehow. Nothing wrong with that happening in some form or fashion, but ALL of them? Its kind of sad to me that Reys character just magically knows how to do all the things that it took every other Jedi decades to master. She does not have to struggle to learn lessons, like Luke did. That was part of the story, following his journey. The heros journey. She is a Mary Sue, and its too bad they did that to those characters.

You'll be broken. Then you'll (hopefully) learn and pull yourself together, and try speaking again, having left behind the parts that broke. 5 years of that, and you'll be articulate, much wiser than you were, and much more humble. Isn't that a good thing? I believe it is.
      I'll also point out that I disagree with Forest Capp's interpretation of the movie: It's not about lashing out. It's not about emotional reactions trumping rational thought. There is a healthy way to express yourself, keeping your emotions bottled up with lead to them exploding like a volcano (When Elsa said "That's enough!" and let her power show) but if you're able to accept yourself and express them in a healthy way, you can work through your problems. My main takeaway from Frozen. Shirk your responsibilities and get praised for it.
    The kingdom of Frozen is filled with mindless drones. Elsa directly put them in danger and then summarily abandons them, yet constantly gets praise for her self validation (her "coming out" if you will).
    Anna then passes that responsibility over to Hans. Hans gives out blankets, cares for the well-being of the populace and is then made into the villian. The best thing that could happen to that kingdom is Anna and Elsa being killed off and replaced with a more competent ruler.
    Same problem with Moana. Her Grandmother's ghost is like "well, at least you tried. I shouldn't have put all that weight on your shoulders." Like, did you forget that the village is starving or something?

    I disagree Prof. Peterson. The worst Disney Movie, if we're talking about the animated ones, by far was Chicken Little. And here's why: The main premise behind Chicken Little was that Chicken Little became a pariah in his town because when it was time for his dad to back him up on his claim that the sky was falling, his dad basically told everyone he was crazy. That was the WORST thing for Buck Cluck to do. And yet the movie plays out as if we're supposed to sympathize with Buck Cluck, as in "Oh he just doesn't know what he's doing." Basic decency and not making your son into a public pariah would have been good. Then throughout the rest of the film, his love and acceptance for his son is practically conditional, suddenly when Chicken Little is a baseball star, NOW his father gives his love back. So on top of what is already a ridiculous non-sensical, cynical story, most Disney movies at least have a good soundtrack right? Good, catchy musical numbers? Well, nope, Chicken Little just uses Bare-Naked Ladies. And frankly if this was a straight to DVD movie, I'd be more forgiving, much like most people are of straight to video movies, but no, this was released in theaters, thus I can't forgive Chicken Little in the slightest, while I can at least give Frozen a pass for having breathtaking animation and good, catchy musical numbers and at least a story that makes sense, even if I don't agree with whatever the Postmodernist ideology that Disney has been trying to push lately.

    "You can say exactly what frozen is about so its propaganda"... I may not be understanding him here but it seems to me that Peterson is asserting that anything with a strong central message, regardless of the content of the message, is propaganda. I have always been under the impression that propaganda has a negative connotation and his use of it indicates that he believes the values portrayed by the film are harmful or bad or extreme. As far as I can tell the message of the film is that familial love is just as important and powerful as romantic love. Wether or not the film communicates this message effectively is immaterial. He also says that a true artist has no political agenda and sites Picasso's cubist portraits. Picasso also made Guernica, an overtly political commentary on the destruction of WWII. Is that piece less artisticly valid because it is politically motivated? I just dont understand his logic here.

      He has no lógic here, he gets mad when he sees a film that has a political agenda he strongly disagrees with... Every Disney movie is political and idiologised.

      The word “Propaganda” has negative a connotation only because of the way it’s commonly used today. It technically just means “literature plainly written to attempt to persuade the consumer to espouse the author’s position.” It is basically just very pointed and direct persuasion. So in that sense propaganda could be valuable in specific circumstances, but most modern examples have been negative. And while it has the potential to be good, there’s something very dangerous about saying “you need to think like this,” especially if the arguments are not supported by good research and logic. You see that a lot when people try to appeal to a population’s emotion rather than reason, and unfortunately it often works because most people don’t understand epistemology.

    I loved that the prince proved himself to be an asshole in Frozen and tgat a working class guy was the object of affection. That possibility of unwarranted betrayal is something I wish I’d learned at a much younger age. It would have prevented unnecessary self blame when men were predatory.

    I wish he'd gotten more into the specifics. I feel like Frozen displayed a lot of the values he's been talking about. Elsa learns personal responsibility for all the damage she can do with a little help from a loved one to "check her madness" or whatever. Am I missing something?

    I'm so glad he is doing better these days.

    I am an artist and I can absolutely confirm that my best work is when i start just scribbling and then discover shapes and forms from the scribbles and develop the picture from trial.

      Same here. I write. Scribble on notebook. Then it grows on the laptop. 1 paragraph becomes a page.
