    Whilst I think this will slightly round out the left and right edges, I'm not sure it would be enough to make a functional difference. I think we should remember that there are many small preferences amongst people for how blades are prepared, micro-bevels, slightly different angles, flat vs. dished backs etc. Not one way is right or wrong, it depends on the tool, how it is to be used, and most importantly the person using it. And we should remember there is a difference in the tradition of Japanese woodwork vs the western style. I can even see an advantage to blending out the sides slightly in certain circumstances. And in combination with the digital angle gauge this'll be a lot quicker to set and select an angle than measuring the protrusion of the blade in the standard Eclipse-type jog and a heck of a lot cheaper than a Tormek!
    I'd like to say thankyou for giving me another option to think about at the very least! Always enjoy these videos.

    Надо изменить позиционирование детали. Сейчас у вас задействована малая часть точильного камня. Он будет быстро и неравномерно изнашиваться. Если вы разместите нож рубанка под углом к опоре, а не соосно, то работать будет намного больше камня. (It is necessary to change the positioning of the knife. Now you have a small part of the grindstone involved. It will wear out quickly and unevenly. If you place the planer knife at an angle to the support, rather than coaxially, then a lot more stone will work.)

  • @kaig.-s.1040
    @kaig.-s.1040 3 года назад +2

    It will NOT create a "rounded" frontal cutting edge for the chisel, but a pretty accurate straight lined.
    Since you pivot the arm around the bolt on the column, the cutting edge itself is always on the same geometrical plane.
    When you are rocking either the stone or the blade inside the holder (only one at the same time), that could be creating a circle shaped front. But when we consider the length of the arm, the introduced angle is very small compared to the bladefront.
    I am sorry for the amount of words,but I couldn't explain it in fewer.
    The jig is a great work and your working place always looks so clean.
    Great job!
    Hopefully this will not be lost.

      I don’t understand this explanation. As you can see on the video, the reflections on the bade are definitely rounded. It’s quite clear on the plane blade and even more obvious on the chisels. If the reflection is rounded, how the edge isn’t?

    La idea sin duda es brillante, cómoda en su desempeño y con un final espectacular pero no todos tenemos esa variedad de maquinarias para su realización. Solo aquellos que poseen un taller estarán en condiciones para obtener una pieza similar. El resto no podríamos aunque se pusieran muchas ganas. No me vengan a decir que antes se lograban cosas increíbles sin máquinas, hoy eso cambió porque artesanos que trabajen al modo antiguo no hay y el tiempo juega en contra. The grinding surface should be completely planar, since the rotation of the arm is following a cone and everythng attached to it follows the groundplane of the cone. Also aligning the stone tangential and shifting it, is pretty efficient with regard to wear and tear of the stone. Really really nice idea.
    But sorry, I'm a German, I have some critique too. Or better said improvement suggestions. Your threaded rod and the mounting of the arm create a big play and your planar surface is compromised by that. The threaded rod is moving pretty badly, which you can see at 1:30 . To improve that situation, you could add two more rods in a triangle to guide the arm mount. Or you could add some kind of support beams to your rod. The other issue I see is the mount of the arm. The loop has a play by itself. The arm can move back and forth, which results in a non planar grinding surface. You could either work with a cardan shaft (which is probably more expensive) or you could decrease a bit of the play by adding a wedge into the loop.
    Please don't get it wrong. I do really like what you do. It's very inspiring. I just want to help a little. :)

    • @kleckerklotz9620
      @kleckerklotz9620 4 года назад

      @@henaken08 That depends on the loop mount and how well the user is able to move and pressurise the blade evenly. But it shouldn't round the edges if everything is fine.

      Although if it were marked at say 30 degrees. It may or may not be a 30 degree angle depending on where the cutting edge is clamped in direct relation to the “length” of the arm to which the tool is clamped to it, and it hooked on the anchor point. If total length is longer or shorter then those numbers would be nothing more than reference marks.....

    Since I don't have any creativity, so I made exactly like yours:) but I think the lever should be change into metal or smh (if you don't understand what lever that I mean, there is short clip where I show it). Because it will be broken by the time and the angel will not precision anymore. But,. hands down to your idea, this jig is really easy and simple to use. Really amazing!!
    *sorry with my grammar

    Credit for simple design.
    Acceptable for short blades such as narrow chisels.
    Not acceptable for long blade as planer or knife, the sharpening diection always should be the same as cutting direction. This creates mucro serrations in the blade itself not seen by naked eyes which helps in the cutting process and lengthen the blade usable life between sharpenings. You should always utilize the whole surface area each stroke to keep them flat.

    Wow that's sharp to cut straight down is a very fine edge. But it's important to remember this craftsman uses high quality tools and equipment so the result you will get will be as good as the tools you have.

    you have beautiful stones and beautiful cutting tools, but I believe that using the stone in that way creates micro pits on the stone itself and over time you have to rectify it. one-side-bevel tools, such as chisels, kiridashi and plane blades, but also scandi beveled knives are very easy to sharpen without any support guide precisely because the single bevel gives the right angle automatically. although I find the way of rubbing on the stone anomalous, I find your technique effective. the Bevel Box is very interesting. Станок конечно же сделан добротно, но сама конструкция имеет ряд недостатков:
    1) сложно держать "горизонт" в поперечной плоскости;
    2) камень стачивается полосами;
    3) сам станак занимает много места.
    Обычное приспособление с двумя роликами и стекло, с наклееной на него наждачкой, обеспечат более точную и качественную заточку.

    興味深く拝見しました。面白いですね。作るのも凄くむつかしくは無さそうだし、角度調整は完璧みたいで、私のような日曜大工レベルには十分です。ただ、片べりは起こりそうですね。

    Very close to the one I came up with a few years back, yours is much more refined though. Worked fucking great, but I get tired of keeping up with one more gadget and finally learned how to freehand. So much better.

    Excellent idea, and very cheap and simple implementation (except of wide stones)! But it's good for instruments with straight blades but not suitable for knives, which are often rounded (

    if you want to be really precise, just keep in mind that the angle changes as you take off material, so you should start with an angle that keeps the edge just slightly off the stone. As you sharpen and remove material, the edge will slowly get closer to the stone and reach the angle you actually want.
