Appreciate you showing us how its used before you build it. Often people do the opposite and the audience has no idea what is being built nor the particular purpose.
Too true! If you don't know where you're going, how can you get there?
You can watch any part of any video in any order you want.
Pretty easy to skip to the end to see what's being made. I can't imagine having the tools to build something from scratch but not the ability to skip through a video
You nailed it. Thanks.
You're a true master of elegant minimalistic engineering! This is simply brilliant yet so stunningly beautiful!
Engineering that's not that is just bad engineering.
I made a copy of this sharpening jig. What a brilliant, effective solution! Thank you for sharing it with us. I did rework it a little to include an adjustable length arm to better accommodate different length tools I sharpen and different thickness stones/plates.
I've seen many sharpening jigs on RUclips. This is the best... Simple and versatile.
I would enjoy watching you make a drill bit sharpening jig. Take care
Simplicity it’s self 👌 a superb jig that all workshops need 👏
You make the best shop-built machinery I've ever seen!
Thank you! It works exactly like you showed. Now now my wood chisels have a true sharp cutting Edge.
I watched 5 seconds, then had to immediately hit pause so I could press the LIKE button & comment how GENIUS this is !!! Thank YOU
I was exactly the same. Credit were credits due. Clever idea
Great job on the sharping jig Friend! Thank you for sharing the video with us!💖👍👌😎JP
i just made a sharpening jig myself. i wish i saw this video first. this is very clever 👍
this is such an amazing idea. So simple idea but yet so amazing. well thought.
for shear brilliance and simplicity...you got a sub! thanks for this.
I just gotta figure out a clamp for large kitchen knives!
Let me know if you do!
Love that, I can apply it to sharpen my chipper mulcher blades witch I'm seeing many people distroying.
Thanks for the teaching Sir
Brilliant in execution and simplicity. You are a master at your craft.Building myself one today.
Thanks for sharing! It's tool that I'm in need for. 🙂
Thank you. I like it. This would allow me to continue to use sandpaper adhered to marble tile. Simple. Unique. May the Creator continue to bless your ingenuity and skill.
You are incredible and an inspiration to the rest of us. God Bless You Master !
Just really brilliant! I am going to bookmark this for later viewing & send it to all of my knife sharpening buddies! Thanks........... 👍👍😉😉👏👏👍👍
Thank you for sharing your Samurai skills .
Enhorabuena.

I can’t believe I watched a man sharpen two chisels at once. That was insane
hahhah true
Actually it's a woman sharpening two chisels at once.
@@philipely4802 delicate hand for sure, but he’s a man if you’ve seen some of his other videos you can more clearly see his body and face if I hadn’t seen his other builds I would have thought the same his panel saw build is the most useful one I’ve seen
@@blacksaber89 Well, his impeccably elegant, unscarred hands are certainly a testimony to the superbly calm, careful skill he shows in his work. I should imagine it's a joy to watch, even for people not into woodwork!
With those narrow width chisels you do need two or a sacrificial piece of something to keep it true 90°. Both the same size, hardness and wear would be best. In a perfect world... I like what they do here!
such a great job and conception !!! Thanks a lot for sharing
Universal, simple, and yet precise. Excellent!
Absolutely brilliant concept and an elegant execution. Wish I could give this a hundred thumbs up!
Ottimo lavoro esecuzione esemplare. Fabrizio 🇮🇹 ciao 🖐️
This was so satisfying.
Clever use of odds and ends, Kudos
wonderful! thank you for taking the time to share this with us. your video is easy to understand and helpful. It looks like you are using powder on glass while sharpening. I have only used waterstones and abrasive sheets on glass. can you describe this a little more? what kind of abrasive powder do you use? thank you for sharing.
Que gran idea y que buen trabajo. Te felicito.
very nice. it's kind of a chimera, a bit like a wicked edge and a bit like Edge Pro. I like it! I'm going to build it. Thanks Mr. Koubou!
I was ready to spring for a mfr. jig and it would not of been as multi-purpose as yours. I am anxious to buid your system. Impressive.
I love your home made machines. Sugoi!
wow nice Jig, great work
When you were adjusting the sharpener, I kept thinking to myself, how is he going to push the blade on the stone because it's hooked to the rod in the back which is holding the angle. I totally missed the whole idea that you don't have to push the blade back and forth, you can go side to side as well. That was so cool. I'm making one of these today...
Hi, seems like positioning, angle and clamping of the blade to be sharpened, are very important. You make it look easy. maybe share a little more on that. thanks. love your stuff.
Muito interessante. Parabéns.
Nice idea, thanks for posting. If you can make it sharpen lathe chisels, in particular, gouges, then it would be truly "universal".
I like this sharpening jig, over others I've seen up to this point. Great idea ...
Amazing, best sharpening idea I have seen
This is perfect! I can't sharpen to save my life and this would remove as much of the human element (me) from sharpening as possible! Best jig I've seen so far
thanks for a great video and lesson. I must do this.
Wow,thank you for sharing.
I like your idea 🙂
I like his approach on acquiring shop power tools, if I don't have it, I make it out of what I have! This is the exact capability needed if people are going to colonize Mars, it's nice to see it hasn't died out completely in our throwaway society.
Genial y muy bueno todos los trabajos. Gracias y saludos desde Canarias Gracias
Clever, as usual. Thanks
I just seen this jig and I wanna say thanks please bring out more videos like this
Idea geniale complimenti bel lavoro
Muy, muy, muy Buen Video.
*¡¡¡ BUEN TRABAJO !!!*
It's one of the simplest and best ideas I've ever have seen. I will make one my own this upcoming days.
Excelente , gracias por compartir tu conocimiento y trabajo👏👏👏👏👍
great, will make one for my all blades
I LOVE IT!!! I appreciate a clip where you can see what can an abject do and then how to built it! Congrats!
Best honing station I have seen yet
I’m making me one of these. Great idea.
I especially like the simplicity of the angle gauge to determine correct angles for the various tools.
I copy this jig of yours and works very well. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
You just made my day!
Truly unique!👍
(It is necessary to change the positioning of the knife. Now you have a small part of the grindstone involved. It will wear out quickly and unevenly. If you place the planer knife at an angle to the support, rather than coaxially, then a lot more stone will work.)
Me watching this video:
Ok, it's a real nice sharpening jig.
@5:21 Oh, he 's showing his sawing jig, that he uses to make it. Nice it's hang up to the wall for less chaos in the workshop.
Wait, what... ? It's screwed to the wall? It's not only hanging there to be put on the desk?
That's awesome! :D :D
Super genius!
Just fascinating ! Thanks a lot !
Simply brillant. Thanks for sharing it
Inspiring. Easly improveable.
Perfekt! Gratulation, I salute you!
You have an excellent channel. Could you please tell us what kind of sharpening stones you used & the different grits? They looked like very nice diamond compound stones. Thank-you.
Wow that's sharp to cut straight down is a very fine edge. But it's important to remember this craftsman uses high quality tools and equipment so the result you will get will be as good as the tools you have.
that's so cool! i love this idea.
Maravilha...Parabéns...
Grato e Abraços...
Loved it! I was also intrigued with your panel saw. Do you have a built video or plans
The grinding surface should be completely planar, since the rotation of the arm is following a cone and everythng attached to it follows the groundplane of the cone. Also aligning the stone tangential and shifting it, is pretty efficient with regard to wear and tear of the stone. Really really nice idea.
But sorry, I'm a German, I have some critique too. Or better said improvement suggestions. Your threaded rod and the mounting of the arm create a big play and your planar surface is compromised by that. The threaded rod is moving pretty badly, which you can see at 1:30 . To improve that situation, you could add two more rods in a triangle to guide the arm mount. Or you could add some kind of support beams to your rod. The other issue I see is the mount of the arm. The loop has a play by itself. The arm can move back and forth, which results in a non planar grinding surface. You could either work with a cardan shaft (which is probably more expensive) or you could decrease a bit of the play by adding a wedge into the loop.
Please don't get it wrong. I do really like what you do. It's very inspiring. I just want to help a little. :)
Don't you think it rounds the edges?
@@henaken08 That depends on the loop mount and how well the user is able to move and pressurise the blade evenly. But it shouldn't round the edges if everything is fine.
Thanks, this is my request 👍👍👍
Just sub'd to the man. Your vids are a nice discovery to a tradesman from Aussie!
Hello great video! I'm looking at getting a Japanese made 18 guage nailer and I'm looking at the Makita af502 and the kanematsu sfn-50. I'm afraid I might not be able to get parts to fix the kanematsu given that the company got eaten by Makita. Do you have some experience with these tools and their parts availability?
This is genius!
Good video. Thank you.
Next level stuff.
Stanley Tool Co. made and sold a tool specifically for sharpening plane blades as in this principle shown here. The tool is an antique now but still available in places like eBay. I have one and it does a perfect job.
Whilst I think this will slightly round out the left and right edges, I'm not sure it would be enough to make a functional difference. I think we should remember that there are many small preferences amongst people for how blades are prepared, micro-bevels, slightly different angles, flat vs. dished backs etc. Not one way is right or wrong, it depends on the tool, how it is to be used, and most importantly the person using it. And we should remember there is a difference in the tradition of Japanese woodwork vs the western style. I can even see an advantage to blending out the sides slightly in certain circumstances. And in combination with the digital angle gauge this'll be a lot quicker to set and select an angle than measuring the protrusion of the blade in the standard Eclipse-type jog and a heck of a lot cheaper than a Tormek!
I'd like to say thankyou for giving me another option to think about at the very least! Always enjoy these videos.
Might be an idea, if you go with a curved edge issue, to increase the radius to as long as you could engineer in the space you had available.
Take a closer look at the structure.
Theoretically, the blade does not round.
@@jisakukobo Exactly. Imagine it doing a full circle on a disc shaped stone
you have beautiful stones and beautiful cutting tools, but I believe that using the stone in that way creates micro pits on the stone itself and over time you have to rectify it. one-side-bevel tools, such as chisels, kiridashi and plane blades, but also scandi beveled knives are very easy to sharpen without any support guide precisely because the single bevel gives the right angle automatically. although I find the way of rubbing on the stone anomalous, I find your technique effective. the Bevel Box is very interesting. Greetings from Italy
What do you suggest for something similar to sharpen PLANER BLADES that are 10 inches long? I love this video. Absolutely amazing. Your help is wonderful
Very clever !
I love the handle on the vice!!! I know a few women who would love that too.
Nice work. Thank you for sharing.
