    Hello from Australia. Yet another well thought out piece of wooden engineering. I think you have worked out the best sequence for an instructional video by firstly showing the user your finished product in use. That way we have a clear understanding of what is about to be constructed. You then make the gadget and follow with a detailed use sequence. If everyone followed this sequence it will greatly enhance the viewing experience. Cheers.

    For most people who can't drill three very accurately spaced holes it would be far more sensible (and quicker and possibly cheaper) to buy the wolfcraft dowelmaster jig, which I suspect inspired this project.
    More generally, if you are looking for accuracy or for at least one of the edges of the joint to be flush, dowel jigs that use a single reference plane are the way to go rather that jigs that self centre. The author has made videos on these types of jigs previously.

    • @macrumpton
      @macrumpton 4 года назад

      If you built this the way he showed you would be able to drill three very accurately spaced holes.

    • @rfrisbee1
      @rfrisbee1 4 года назад +1

      Assuming the quill in the drill press you were using did not wobble around like every one built in China appears to! The author has built his own drill press using a hand drill that appears to have very little play in the output shaft bearings and runs on linear bearings.
      Having said that, it is _always_ better to reference off a single surface when accuracy is required. The featured jig relies on the thickness of the material being joined being very consistent, something that is not always the case.
      Jigs that use a single reference surface are also easier to build and can be used to put dowels closer to the ends of a joint than this type of jig that can only get to 30-40mm away - not much use for material under 100mm wide!
      In summary, this jig is only useful for joining largish engineered sheets of material such as MDF, plywood and chipboard, where the thickness of the material is very consistent and the edges to be joined are long enough to allow the pins used for self-centring to rest on the material. A jig that uses a single reference surface can join the above materials, is easier to make and can be used with more typically dimensioned wood, getting the visible edges perfectly aligned.
