I'm just finishing up a 1989 1750 Capri Cobra. Luckily the floor was in good shape. Had to replace all upholstery from the windshield back. Previous owner kept the bow covered but did nothing else to maintain it for the 6 years he had it. Wood under the transom cushion was rotten to powder. Every cleat and piece of hardware was loose. He put a couple hundred dollars into a 200W stereo system but I am hard of hearing so never listen to stereo music. All the wiring was just twisted together and taped. Even the ignition key was bare wires wrapped around the terminals. Side window was broken and somebody replaced it with Plexiglass. It turned out nice. I myself just picked up a 94 Capri 3.0 so what rotted wood can be fixed fairly easy the key to having these boats is the price that you can get them for and then you can spend as much money and time invested and make it your own comparisons to buying a ready to go for triple or more. Good job Happy Safe Boating
Thank you for comment Steve! As you see, there are a lot of "negative Nancy" out there. I can't afford buying a new boat, so if I want a boat, this is the way to do it! Happy boating to you too!
You are a handy fellow to have around. I'm doing basically same thing on a 87 Bayliner cobra close bow. I'm told it's a rare boat. So we'll see if it will last for a few years to come.
Funny I used to work at a Bayliner dealership wen that boat was new ..1750 or 1950 ..they were built as a working man's boat at nearly half the price of other boats we sold at the time , the hulls were very thin .. but yet seemed to hold up ? I remember some factory problems on the 89 , the factory corrected them with "trim tabs " later that year ..the came with three drive line options of course Mercury being the most expensive at the time , or more dependable .. I believe the omc sterndrive was the most common leaving the Volvo Penta in last place , my boss who worked on boats for 40 years at the time used to say a boat is a whole in the water that people threw money into ..but for a starting price of $600 bucks your way ahead of the game . A new boat is payments for years , wasted .. but every dime you put in this boat is all yours , REGARDLESS of book value ..in the end it's paid for . And you get to run with people who will pay for years . Good job ...
That's exactly right Sean Michael! Correct prediction! Se here how I learned the hard way: ruclips.net/video/GKFhN6ROl5g/видео.html , and how I got it back: ruclips.net/video/P49CJFaSEBQ/видео.html , and the transom repair here: ruclips.net/video/mYozqpccbQg/видео.html

I just saw this vid and thought you'd be removing the transom as well, and the rest front to back, I'm sure there's some intrusion into the transom as well.....however all's well that ends well...I passed up a bayliner that was exactly the same way instead of a mercruiser it had the omc and that was another deciding factor ( no omc parts available anymore) and being a mercruiser guy it soured me on the whole deal as well....at least it runs and good work on what you have done.....thumbs high
Hi V C! There is a lot of different videos about this boat. There are TWO on the transom rebuild alone. If you subscribe, you get notified every time I launch another video. PS: No problem getting OMC parts. At least not in the western world.
The OMC Cobra stern drives are pretty strong... But you should never run the engine with the drive trimmed out like that..the drive shaft has u joints just like the drive shaft on a car or truck..u will destroy the u joints quick. That knocking noise you heard was that u joint.. always run with water like you did . And Always trim it down . As far as Bayliner goes . They were pretty cheap and the quality wasn't the best.. but if you treated it right . Keep it in the dry youd be good..
Marc Harris Hey Marc, I just bought a 1997 Bayliner Capri 1954 and it’s in relatively good condition. I’ve had it out twice now and it stalls shifting into reverse. Mind if I pick your brain for this problem?
Good for you .. you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to have the same experience as other boaters .. I have a 1968 Starcraft close bow with a 83 merc 50 hp .. does the trick
I am working on a 1986 Bayliner Capri with a 5.0 engine. Got it for free for getting it out of the lake. Was in a boat house and the right rear lifting cable broke so the right rear went under water along with 2/3rds of the boat. Apparently it was under water around a month before the owner noticed. They had a pontoon boat also in the boat house which blocked their view. It runs great and I am repairing stuff which needed to be done before the sinking. Replaced a section of soft floor, ujoints, bellows, exhaust bellows. I am missing the ski access door in the floor. Don't know the official name. Both rear seat cushions on either side of the engine. And the long piece which runs across the back of the boat which flips over where the bimini top is stored. I assume these items floated away. Where did you get your foam and material you used to cover the plywood? Looks like you are located in Ga. So am I .
How can it run great if it was under water for a month? Anyway, I search for deals on ebay. Got most of my parts and materials there. Where in Georgia are you? I am in Savannah. Did you subscribe yet?
What type of grinder wheel did you use on the angle grinder to cut through the wood? I can’t seem to find one that’ll cut well enough through the thin fiberglass layer on my flooring.
Instead of using a grinder wheel, use a cut-off wheel. They are thin and much more brittle, so be careful! www.harborfreight.com/search?q=cutting%20wheel
There are lots of those old Bayliners out there for cheap or even free they were massed produced with many short cuts to keep the price low a old trick of the company used to do at the boat shows was to put fabric skirts around the hulls so people wouldn’t see how thin the fiberglass was on the hulls one of my boating buddies told me his son in laws foot went right thru the hull when he stepped into the engine area to do some maintenance on his Bayliner Not all of their boats were made badly just a few production runs on some models very common with most boat builders building high production runs
One person trash is another persons treasure, god bless people like Chefgeirs ability to resurrect projects like this, @2:06 Ooof hope you were wearing a mask, that stuff would be worse for you more so than Human Malware.
I've got a bayliner project with an outboard, but I cant find a replacement handle with pull out neutral throttle control. Do you know what could be interchangeable with that?
just subscribed.... I will check out the waverunner vid. Do you think a 1986 Wellcraft with a 1995 150hp mercury " that needs carbs cleaned " for 1900.00 is a good deal ?
Only if your transom is not rotten! See what happened at the end of this video: ruclips.net/video/GKFhN6ROl5g/видео.html and the repairs here: ruclips.net/video/mYozqpccbQg/видео.html
thank you chef..... Its an outboard on the boat i'm looking at which i can see is going to be a lot easier to deal with than a inboard. I should be able to tell with a visual inspection because of the outboard. The person selling the boat is saying " the transom appears solid "
I've had two bayliners 89 Capri OMC 5.0 and a 95 Bayliner 16 ft cuddy with the Mercury Force 120 ended up selling boosts because the floors were rotting out their overall not bad boats just cheaply built
pressure treated. And it will last longer than the original, as most small boat builders back in the day only used cheap, untreated wood. But thank you for your concern.
600 the main important thing if it runs and it floats for 600 bucks good deal interior can be redone that's nothing I used to have a 4.3 Bayliner Capri loved it
Well, it did run,..........in the beginning. But troubles came later. see my videos starting with "virgin boat trip........" (about 6 months ago). And then the rescue and repair videos.

Thanks! And good luck on YOUR project!
Thank you Paige!

If cores surrounding engine are rotten it is likely that you have water intrusion in transom and possibly stringers. Nice work good luck with it

That is true. I see so many nice boats sitting in peoples yards WITHOUT cover. So careless ! Guess they don't realize the damage before it's too late.

What type of grinder wheel did you use on the angle grinder to cut through the wood? I can’t seem to find one that’ll cut well enough through the thin fiberglass layer on my flooring.
Instead of using a grinder wheel, use a cut-off wheel. They are thin and much more brittle, so be careful! www.harborfreight.com/search?q=cutting%20wheel
And then there is THIS: www.harborfreight.com/22-tooth-carving-disc-61638.html

There are lots of those old Bayliners out there for cheap or even free they were massed produced with many short cuts to keep the price low a old trick of the company used to do at the boat shows was to put fabric skirts around the hulls so people wouldn’t see how thin the fiberglass was on the hulls one of my boating buddies told me his son in laws foot went right thru the hull when he stepped into the engine area to do some maintenance on his Bayliner Not all of their boats were made badly just a few production runs on some models very common with most boat builders building high production runs

I'm just wondering how long it's going to last. None of the was protected or painted. What kind wood did you use?
pressure treated. And it will last longer than the original, as most small boat builders back in the day only used cheap, untreated wood. But thank you for your concern.
Bay liner has a thin Hull it’s dangerous but not bad for 600 and motor runs!

600 the main important thing if it runs and it floats for 600 bucks good deal interior can be redone that's nothing I used to have a 4.3 Bayliner Capri loved it
