Great example of allowing the dog some freedom and the chance to smell and run! And, yes - always keep aware of your surroundings so you are not caught off guard. Great video! Dogs need to relax sometimes and I totally agree. Then when you work, the dog knows that it is time to work. Last week I had to kick a small dog TWICE that charged us and the owner said "sorry he's normally nice!". Great but do you like it when random strangers rush up and try to buck up on you??? It's not nice!! I tear them up for not having a leash!
You should tear them a new one! So obnoxious! I never advocate letting a dog off leash in public for this reason! Trained or not! Invades other people’s space. No one cares if they’re friendly, leave us alone!! 😆🙏🏼🙌🏻
I noticed you looking around like you were paranoid during the first part of the walk. I get it! I used to take the sled team into town for distraction training. Try holding back 6 Sibes cause brave Fifi thought she would try standing in front of the team saying far enough folks. All the while 220lbs is standing on full brake being dragged closer and closer to fifi with me screaming at the lady to gab her dog before it becomes lunch. She did, thankfully. That would of been messy right near the public school. Great chapter but glad all 15 years of it are over.

Sucks, I'm 62 and have way too many joint issues to let them yank me around like that. (We're putting a physical fence in so they can be dogs in a controlled environment) When we go out, they must be loose leashed. I want ours to know when the leash is on they can't tug and pull. We have a lot of rescue dogs since we been saving dogs for over 26 yrs plus our own dogs. recently got me a Malinois after 4 of our long time self owned dogs died from cancer within 2 years time .
I don’t have any complaints about the no training or dog…however I do think you should look into some running form Belgians love to run so while I understand you don’t plan on running a lot of the time it’s still good to know proper running/jogging form so you have as healthy shins/ legs as the little belgie, otherwise I think it’s awesome you take him out to go be a dog
Ok, been wondering about this for hiking because trails are so narrow. His heel is just ok. My trainer said no, not to let him go in front because his heel will get worse. Is this true? We just want to enjoy a hike without always correcting him, can’t be enjoyable for him. But, I also don’t want to mess up what training I have. What do think I should? No hiking until heel is better or hike, have fun and keep working on it?
My dog and I are at a similar stage. We heal walk on sidewalks around neighborhoods. I have used a slip leash and a buckled flat collar to keep him at my knee for that and I allow sniffing but with moderation. When we beach run it's completely different. He wears a harness and is clipped to my belt with about 8 ft of line. He pulls me, and orbits around me but I call him 'close' if we pass within 40ft of other dogs. We haven't figured out trails runs yet but I'm certain I want him in front of me. Probably belt clipped and on at least 5 ft of leash so I don't run into him if he stops. He knows we're doing different things, and figures it all out (eventually). He's 13 months this week.
When we get to a grassy area, I clip his leash to a different collar and say, Sniff. When it’s time to move on I say, Done. He is getting better at that. It is all a lot to try and figure out sometimes. I am having a hard time figuring out what to do when he all of a sudden dive bombs a scent when we’re walking. He pays no attention to leave it then, very hard to get him off of whatever he smells. Sounds like you and your dog are off to a good start, Joe.
Without being disrespectful although it's great to see you both enjoying yourselves, l can't understand why the dog is pulling you all over the place if he is "highly trained " l Am also a dog trainer and my dogs or dogs I've trained would never pull no matter where we are. Not sure if the Law in that park is leads must be on? Maybe l missed something. I let my dogs off lead as soon as they are ready for it.But l only allow my dogs to move out away from me so far unless l send them out. They won't and don't want to be that far away from me . I don't train my dogs to compete just real world stuff moving in woodland, fields, parks , car parks (lots) but if on lead l train them never to tighten the lead up or pull me no matter where we are or what distraction they encounter while out. I have watched a few of your videos and credit where credit is due very very good from a working competition point of view. But surprised that doesn't extend to the outside world which is what 95% of dog ownership is. All the best!
I have to respectfully disagree with you. This pup was having a chance to do what dogs naturally do…..run, smell, go off in different directions etc. Dogs do not naturally stay within a certain distance of its handler. He said at the beginning of this video he was going to let Fred be a dog. As for going off lead…in many states it is illegal to not have your dog on a leash. Not only that…it is rather unkind as there are people in the park that may be traumatized by dogs but still have every right to be in that park. I am also of the belief that an animal is an animal first and foremost with all the instincts that come with it being such. You do not ever know what will trigger a dog to run off. Ever….no matter how well trained. Every time you let your dog off leash in public you are risking that dogs life. And I’m 100% sure that if what he wanted was for Fred to not run off and to not pull on the lead, Fred would’ve obliged. He is very well trained. I don’t believe competing is not what he is trained to do. He is a protection dog and competes in arenas of that skill set. It’s a whole different ball game than walking pretty. As I said I mean no disrespect and I think we all have our own idea of what a well trained dog should and shouldn’t be or do. But this dog is well trained and I’m not quite sure why you put those word in quotes.
If he wanted him to slow down and walk slow next to him, he would as he is well looked after and gets lots of training very often indeed. If he didn’t get trained much then it would be an issue but that is not the case here. That’s why he wants him to pull.
65 comments so far, and only 3 or 4 negatives that apparently didn’t understand the purpose of the video: that a highly trained dog is still first and foremost a dog, and is entitled to run and sniff around in a new environment with his master (while respecting leash laws and other owners). Couldn’t agree more!!! Best value on the internet. Life changing.
Just here to roast ya man.. your dog is pulling the leash so obnoxiously 😂😂
Haha! I know I wish I knew how to train 🙃
Do you live in the Cincinnati area. I'm looking to get a belgian malinois with in a year
Wish you would have talked a little more extensively about the positive and negative reinforcement of "kenneling-up".
I don’t have any complaints about the no training or dog…however I do think you should look into some running form Belgians love to run so while I understand you don’t plan on running a lot of the time it’s still good to know proper running/jogging form so you have as healthy shins/ legs as the little belgie, otherwise I think it’s awesome you take him out to go be a dog
hello, how does your dog keep concentration on you for so long, make a video how you develop it
Consistency and lots of repetitions
Ok, been wondering about this for hiking because trails are so narrow. His heel is just ok. My trainer said no, not to let him go in front because his heel will get worse. Is this true? We just want to enjoy a hike without always correcting him, can’t be enjoyable for him. But, I also don’t want to mess up what training I have. What do think I should? No hiking until heel is better or hike, have fun and keep working on it?
Hard to say without knowing your and the dogs skills. Generally speaking, this will not ‘mess up’ obedience training as long as it’s solid 👍🏻
@@joefish6546 Nice 👍🏻
When we get to a grassy area, I clip his leash to a different collar and say, Sniff. When it’s time to move on I say, Done. He is getting better at that. It is all a lot to try and figure out sometimes. I am having a hard time figuring out what to do when he all of a sudden dive bombs a scent when we’re walking. He pays no attention to leave it then, very hard to get him off of whatever he smells. Sounds like you and your dog are off to a good start, Joe.
@@karenbates4987 Dog training is very difficult for sure! 🙏🏼
