Here in your bedroom was the first MP3 I ever downloaded back in the 90s from a webpage right before the legality issues started appearing. lol. iykyk. For real, though. I guess Goldfinger isn't truly "ska enough". If they were, Finn surely would/should have teased them AT LEAST a little bit :D
Goldfingers "live" sets during the pandemic were amazing and just what the world needed., fun, positive music. Been a fan ever since the Pro skater days and im glad they still rocking.
I remember reaching out to Goldfinger a loooooooong time ago as a fan. I received a response that was so gracious and kind. These guys are great humans on top of being great musicians.
I remember chatting with Darren on AIM in 1998! It was right before 'Superman' came out and he was so stoked and talking about how it was going to be featured in the movie King Pin.. lol
Don't forget that the pizza hut big new yorker pizza came with a ps1 demo disk at the time. It had spyro and Tony hawk on it . Tony hawk was only the first level with superman playing in loop. We stayed up all night playing that demo. It's literally my first experience with the song. I'm willing to bet alot more kids discovered it the same way.
Driving down PCH blaring Goldfinger, Sublime, Buck O Nine, Reel Big Fish etc etc in 1998 at 18 years old being free and young was all you could ask for. I’m 45 now and if I could have a Groundhog Day to relive over and over it would be any day from 1998. When they dropped the Superman quarantine video a few years ago it was a highlight and something my soul needed.
I took my buddy Aaron to see Goldfinger for his 21st bday back in the early 00’s. They were playing at small venue in Portland. I think Dante’s but it’s been a min. Anyway we are right against the stage and Aaron is professing his love for them rather loudly. They pulled him up on stage he said it was his birthday and all he wanted was to sing Mabel with them, they totally let him. Fucking greatest concert memory.
Man, their first album is still in regular rotation and has never left. Beginning to end, it's so good and a little bit of everything is in there for everyone. Hang ups is no slouch either, but that first one is pure magic.
This was the first band me and my friends ever got to go backstage and hang out with. We were probably 17 maybe 18 probably around 1996. They played at a club called milk bar in Jacksonville Florida. That club was the perfect punk rock venue and we had shows all the time there. But I can remember playing baseball with oranges in the green room and we ate half of the pizza that they had back there. They’re actually pretty cool guys. The drummer was the one who invited us to come backstage.
I saw Goldfinger live some years back and all though I was just a casual fan who only knew their more popular songs, their live show blew me away. One of the best bands I've seen live.
so IMO Goldfinger became that Favorite Uncle of the Ska/Punk scene plus they just put out a new song with Less than Jake who in their own right is very underrated in a different way
Superman remains one of my favorite songs to date. Such a banger! I used to replay the first level of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater at my friend's house just to hear it over and over. That friend sadly passed away when we were in our early 20s but whenever I hear that song I think back to those fun summer days.
I tried out as singer for The Used back when they were just called Used and they hadn't gotten Bert yet, I can attest to them basically being homeless. I had just moved to Provo, UT at the end of 2000 and I saw a hand written want ad in a local music store window and gave it a call. I talked with Quinn the guitarist a few times, and he's like "dude can you even sing??" So on the spot I sang an original song of mine and he's like "oh cool man, let's get together this Monday night". Monday came and I was having some transportation problems(yeah I was sleeping on my sisters couch so I wasn't much better off then them😄), I called Quinn and told them I could get a ride there but could someone give me a ride back and he was like "uhhhh, nobody has a car..." I got off the phone and was like "whadda bunch of losers, these guys ain't going nowhere " Then I start seeing these stickers popping up saying The Used and then I saw Taste of Ink and was like guess I was wrong😅 I wasn't the singer that makes that band work, I could never scream like Bert so yeah they found the mix that made that band work and I dig alot of their stuff for sure🤘😎
I give Feldman a ton of credit. Dude helped shaped a lot of people into who they are today with the music he helped bands create and give to the world. I may not like all he's had his hands in, but I will never say a bad word about the dude. Also, his collab cover of "I Had Some Help" with Less Than Jake slaps.
My exposure to Goldfinger was from Rocket Power of all things. There was a TV movie called "Race Across New Zealand" and during one of the races, they had Goldfinger's version of "99 Red Balloons" playing and I thought it sounded awesome. It's also how I discovered the band Area 7 who had their song "Individuality" featured in that same TV movie. As far as Feldmann goes, the singer in my previous band was OBSESSED with Feldmann's production, so that's how I came to really appreciate him as a producer and songwriter. Some of the best alternative and punk albums of the 00's have his name on them and I consider him one of my favorite producers.
Man, this video brings back so much nostalgia for the days when I had Goldfinger playing constantly. Might be a good day to listen to them again. Thanks for doing this one, Finn!
Love the channel and I've watched a ton of your episodes so I appreciate all the work that goes into each video. I agree that Goldfinger is Feldman but you really didn't cover the drastic changes in their sound that happened with each lineup change. For those of us that loved the first album and hangups, Simon (bass) left and they lost all the horns. Next Charlie (guitar) left and they lost all of the cool wah solos. Eventually Feldman had a falling out with the longtime drummer (Darrin) and the sound went almost full commercial. The band died for like 10 years, then Charlie came back, they added the SOTY guitarist and bassist from MXPX and they were back more so as Feldman with a supporting cast of all-stars. Anyhow, it would have been cool had you covered more of the SOTY producer work he did with them which was some of their best. King for a Day, Carlita, Yesterday, Don't Want to be Myself Today were great tracks. The Innocent released after 911 was epic. It also would have been funny playing F*ck Ted Nugent. Great song.
I'm a fan of the band since the release of Hang-ups and had a really great time listening to it. I had the chance to see them live because they were opening for 'The Bloodhound Gang' during their tour, which included a date in my hometown in Portugal - as you may think, this is highly unlikely in a small country. I can remember listening to a member of the band, at the end of their 40 minute or so set, thanking BHG for letting them pay their rent. I feel really happy for John knowing he stayed relevant through the years, eventually getting bigger in the scene. I really loved the Hang-Ups album, not just 'Superman', it really means a lot to me and I believe to some of my friends who got to know the band borrowing the CD from me. This was a really nice video, thank you!
A few months ago I crossed an International border and drove +5000km, each way, to see Goldfinger in Denver! Their self titled album was one of the 3 first CDs I ever bought (that, Less Than Jake, who also played at that show in Denver, and No Doubt were all bought at the same time). Best show ever!
I personally loved Stomping Grounds. It is still one of my favorite albums from any band. So well put together. Underrated IMO. I had many friends back then say it was over-produced. But I loved every minute of it and it still stands up today.
I'll never forget when Goldfinger refused to get off stage at EndFest, it was like 96 or 97. Eventually, they had to kill power to the stage to get them off of the stage. I was 13ish at time and have been a fan ever since.
this same thing happened at a Hatebreed show in DC early 2000's. They played for like 3 hours and started taking cover requests and even repeated some of the hits....was epic
Finn- really appreciate you keeping the scene alive! I recently saw Goldfinger and they killed it. That concert happened be the reason I discovered face to face. That would be such a great video to learn about F2F!
Goldfinger is awesome, saw them 3 times, they would come to Iowa back in the day. A big multiband festival from the radio station, and small clubs like supertoads. They always treated their fans nice and put on a hell of a show. God bless them.
These guys still put on an amazing live show and are "unknown" enough to not have insane ticket prices. They don't do shows in my area very often, but I make it a point to see them whenever they do. Even if that means an 8 hour drive. John comes off as a truly genuine person who cares and the amount of energy he brings to a performance is amazing.
I regularly enjoyed several Goldfinger tracks back in the day. Maybe they were never Blink-182 popular but I think they are certainly more than a one-hit-wonder imo. I Really appreciate the spotlight videos you do for specific bands, would love to hear your thoughts on Zebrahead. Thanks for the video!
Finn, I wish you’d do an episode about the Chicago punk scene, old and new. I’m referring to bands like 88 Fingers Louie, Rise Against, Naked Raygun, Mest, Showoff, Lucky Boys Confusion, the Bollweevils, Alkaline Trio, Allister, Much the Same, Screeching Weasel, the Lawrence Arms, Still Alive, and Counterpunch. I feel that my hometown, Chicago, has some of the best punk rock and there is absolutely enough material to make a great and informative video. Thank you for your videos and please consider my request. Have a great day. Oh yeah, i have a Goldfinger tattoo😊. Mike
Love this as a big fan of Goldfinger. Goldfinger is still amazing live. Saw them earlier this year. Met John after the show. He’s a legend. I have a request, a strange video with the history of Less Than Jake please.
My introduction to the band was from a gf in ‘98. She played their album “Hang ups” for me on cassette in the car. I didn’t think much of it initially. Then, “Counting the Days” came out and I bought “Stomping Grounds” immediately. It was all over for me after that. I went and bought their first two albums and I’ve been a huge fan ever since.
John Feldman is a great guy, I met him back in 2003 and he made time to chat to us when he really didn't need to. Also Goldfinger are so fun to watch live.
i got in really late, with open your eyes, "January" and "Dad (and the rest btw) kept me hooked and its still my fav :) I love his production, what sucks last 10 years is mastering is compressing it waaaaay to much to play in clubs
My wife and I have fond memories of taking joy rides during lockdown to this album and the previous one (The Knife). Also they are just a fun band to see live. Highly recommend
Finn I LOVE you did this video. Love. In my humble opinion I listen to a lot of the bands in all of your videos across-the-board. Goldfinger to me is number one. And it’s crazy the new material they put out might be their best yet.
The first CD I ever bought was Goldfinger's debut album in 1995 at Sam Goody and they've been my favorite band ever since. I just got home from a trip to SoCal and I only listened to their music while driving around. You hit the nail on the head about their new album being happy summer music. I will say though, it's weird hearing Mike Herrera singing. I'm not a big fan of his vocal parts in Goldfinger music, but perhaps it will grow on me. Thanks for doing this video Finn! ❤
I like that you’re talking about this band. In my teenage years this was my favorite band. Living in Kentucky a lot of people never heard of Goldfinger and when I would play some of their songs. What I have realized is John Feldman has been in touch with soooo many musicians or other bands it’s mind blowing. In Cincinnati before MGK was super popular he was rapping at Warped Tour. I was sitting in the stands to take a break and it was hot as hell. As he was rapping one of the members of Goldfinger I think could’ve been the drummer got on stage and was trying to bring a bunch of fans on stage with them. I turned them down but I wish I hadn’t. It was still cool though.
I eventually got tired of the PETA bs and then the liberalism not only in their music but in all of the bands I liked at the time other than maybe Flatfoot 56.
It was apparently because it sounded like "a John fieldman album" whatever that means, they got bob rock instead. Although stu who's ex prophets and now in Thursday did say it made him a better producer learning from John.
Thanks for finally breaking the mystery to me of why the Used were touring with Goldfinger, Mest, and Riddlin' Kids in 2002. We saw them at a show up in Buffalo and the Used were SO BAD that John had to come out and sing with them for a couple songs to get the crowd back into it. Everyone was booing, they were awful. We could never figure out why they were in that lineup but knowing John was involved with them, that makes perfect sense now.
I used to take my then teenage son to Warped Tour back in the day. I'd send him and hia friends off and go see the adult bands, and discover new bands. Goldfinger was so much fun, live. I have always been more into hardcore but I'd pay to see these guys again.
Just saw them in LA at the Wiltern, crazy how they’re just popping up on my feeds now haha another awesome analysis ! Hope to meet you and discuss music with you someday. Keep it up!
Ribbon microphones sound absolutely amazing but they are fragile. So they can’t be used live if you’re shaking them around. Old old school tech that is fabulous. I have a og Roland space echo and it’s priceless to me
John Feldmann was a senior at SHS when I was a freshman. I don't know him but it was funny when I put it all together. "Hey I went to high school with that guy"
yeah, I was going to say the same thing. I guess it's fair game since Feldman's the main song-writer. But yeah, it is a bit odd that he doesn't mention any of the other band members after the initial 'when they met' part, lol. I guess the other guys weren't important to the songwriting. But yeah, fair to say it was a MISLEADING title
My two favourite Goldfinger albums are Stomping Ground and Open Your Eyes. There’s no denying Feldmann’s influence in production and songwriting. A true GOAT in the pop/alternative sphere in my books.
Feldman is also the reason The Used and Story of The Year got the chance to prove their worth. Say what you will about the sound of the early records from those bands but man he did a lot for that scene back then. Much respect!
The reason the song is so burned into everyone’s mind compared to the other tracks on THPS, is there was this free demo disc that Sony gave out with the console that featured the first little skate park and only had Superman as a song that played over and over and kids would play it for hours because it was a fun demo.
I'll admit, seeing Tony sing Superman with Goldfinger at the HOB in Anaheim last year, was an awesome, full circle, moment. (Seeing them play with Mike Herrera was rad too.)
@05:37 say what you want and personally i'm not a ska fan, but this guy is definitely credential in the scene theres some real old school diy stuff with the phone number on the cassette demo the guy kept grinding at this level and is now a top tier producer!
Dude, fucking what John Feldman did with The Used! Chefs kiss. When I heard The Used's first album, I was taken to another plane of existence. The sound of that album was so different from anything around at the time.
While Rancid and NOFX owned my early to mid 90s, Goldfinger & Reel Big Fish definitely took over the second half of my decade. And they are both definitely my feel-good mood go-to bands to this day.
I went to the Blood Hound Gang show in Lisbon at Super Bock Super Rock at the Garage. I was a Blood Hound Gang and I didn't know Goldfinger, so I bought Hang Ups on a skate store near my school. To my surprise they were the band featured in THPS that I played all the time. I ended up enjoying Goldfinger more than Blood Hound Gang that night and they became one of my favourite bands.

You say Conan like Regis Philbin.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I agree!!!
My favourite genre of music is, still, Tony Hawke's Soundtrack-core.
Best game soundtrack of all time!
It's probably in Fat Mike's punk rock hall of 'fame'
A soundtrack is not a band
Superman has one of my favorite lyrics ever. "So here I am getting older all the time, looking older all the time, Feeling younger in my mind" I live that. Middle aged with a Mohawk and still going to punk shows \m/
and then when they played that Zoom version of it during covid it was particularly poignant, especially since we're all now +40

Pretty sure I saw a show on that tour.

This is the 'ol dude Jerry J Reynolds, and you're listening to Less Than Jake.
I remember seeing them years ago, with John being my Dad's age, it's crazy how good he is on stage.
I thought their The Knife album was great, and really got me listening to them again.
Their COVID videos / album and the last dance tv show were a couple of a very few things that saved 2020 entertainment wise
You really should do a video about The Aquabats.
Love Feldy and what he's done for the music scene. Great post, Finn.
great video! do the bouncing souls next please!
"Play it, Goldfinger!"
That looks like a tube of Cookie Dough!
Thanks! I've been waiting for this episode for so long.
Now I'll be waiting for the episode about Mindless Self Indulgence.
My wife and I have fond memories of taking joy rides during lockdown to this album and the previous one (The Knife). Also they are just a fun band to see live. Highly recommend
Oh joy of joys. Finn is reviewing Goldfinger and a Tony Hawk game. This should be fun.
Love Feldman and Goldfinger. Songwriting, producing, he has an unmistakable style. Love that Sueco album he produced
I remember the Goldfinger album 'Hang Ups' had adverts for local businesses in the CD inlay. I used to prank call them from the UK as a teenager.
I saw them recently at a show in Europe and they were AMAZING. Great band, great dude.
“Here in your bedroom” was a mid-90s classic! That song was all over alt radio.
Finn I LOVE you did this video. Love. In my humble opinion I listen to a lot of the bands in all of your videos across-the-board. Goldfinger to me is number one. And it’s crazy the new material they put out might be their best yet.
Finally my favourite music RUclipsr covers my favourite band.
THPS 100% introduced me to punk and hardcore music. I’m so thankful for that game.
Fun fact: Lostprophets spent $500k on doing an album with John Feldmann in 2008 and then scrapped it because they hated how it turned out.
It was apparently because it sounded like "a John fieldman album" whatever that means, they got bob rock instead. Although stu who's ex prophets and now in Thursday did say it made him a better producer learning from John.
@@lewisb85 I always imagined it had that Story of the Year/The Used vibe to it, would be interested to hear the original sessions!
Probably coz that Grub Watkins thought it wouldn’t appeal enough to kids…

Thanks for finally breaking the mystery to me of why the Used were touring with Goldfinger, Mest, and Riddlin' Kids in 2002. We saw them at a show up in Buffalo and the Used were SO BAD that John had to come out and sing with them for a couple songs to get the crowd back into it. Everyone was booing, they were awful. We could never figure out why they were in that lineup but knowing John was involved with them, that makes perfect sense now.
Goldfinger was awesome, still is awesome. That first album is a classic in my book. He's one hell of a songwriter, I'm jealous of his ability.
I used to take my then teenage son to Warped Tour back in the day. I'd send him and hia friends off and go see the adult bands, and discover new bands.
Goldfinger was so much fun, live. I have always been more into hardcore but I'd pay to see these guys again.
I know their 2nd bass player. Ol' Kelly Lemieux! He was one of my instructors at the Paul Green School of Rock when I was a young warthog.
Damn, I didn’t know Feldman was behind my favorite album of all time with The Used self titled first album. Complete masterpiece.
I have a og Roland space echo and it’s priceless to me
Drummer Darren Pheifer played drums previously with Buffalo Hardcore kings Zero Tolerance and a pre Cannibal Corpse band Beyond Death
John Feldmann was a senior at SHS when I was a freshman. I don't know him but it was funny when I put it all together. "Hey I went to high school with that guy"
For a video about Gildfinger, you sure exclusively talked about Feldy for 80% of it.
yeah, I was going to say the same thing.
4:39 "jacked on life" 🤫
I said the same shit lmao immediately went looking for this comment
My two favourite Goldfinger albums are Stomping Ground and Open Your Eyes. There’s no denying Feldmann’s influence in production and songwriting. A true GOAT in the pop/alternative sphere in my books.
Feldman is also the reason The Used and Story of The Year got the chance to prove their worth. Say what you will about the sound of the early records from those bands but man he did a lot for that scene back then. Much respect!
I could be wrong but similar story with MEST too! Alpt of bands owe a lot to Feldman!
Mable will forever be one of my favorite songs. Good times.
You answered my prayer you’d do this vid! Thanks, Finn! 🙏❤😂
Saw them quite a few times, and they always had a great live vibe.
This makes me miss Warped too.
@05:37 say what you want and personally i'm not a ska fan, but this guy is definitely credential in the scene theres some real old school diy stuff with the phone number on the cassette demo the guy kept grinding at this level and is now a top tier producer!
Great band. Saw them at Gabe's in Iowa City in 1997 or 1998 and they were kick ass. We even hung out with them before and after the show.
They have so many great songs here in my bedroom, 99 red balloons so on and so on
I don't really have strong opinions...wait, any opinions formed yet on Goldfinger. But, Finn, another banger of a video. Thanks.
