The thing is Mario 64 took inspiration from Mario RPG for example Jolly Rodger Bay is similar to the Sunken Ship in Mario RPG and Mario punching things in general. While Mario Galaxy and Paper Mario are completely different games.
I play this game over and over again. I've even printed out (yes, on paper) online fan-written walkthroughs from the late 90's till recently as reference while I play, each has a different strategy (which characters to use for boss battles, which accessories to wear in certain areas), which means each time I play I get a unique experience. And I always grind early and often so I'm maxed at level 30 by the end. Best game ever written, the dialog, the music and general tone.
My interpretation of Star Hill is as follows: The whole point of the zone and the wishes you can read is to show you all of the wishes of the different people of the world and everything that you're fighting in restoring the Star Road so that it can continue to make wishes come true. Then after you've explored it and seen the wishes of the world with a new understanding of what you're fighting for, they give you the star as a final gift. Granting your wish/desire so that you can give wishes back to the rest of the world. All of that solely done through gameplay alone. Take it as you will!
Khalith I think he meant that if this was the intention, they should have removed combat entirely for that zone, not just remove the boss but leave random enemies.
Honestly, that'd be a nice setpiece if it was like a cutscene where the party just walks around listening to wishes before encountering the Star Piece.
@@cachotognax3600 I would believe the enemy encounters are there so you can get a feel with now your full party of 5 including Toadstool while not throwing other things to distract you like platforming, bosses and puzzles. You can also know when to switch your characters as that is a tactic you can use in the next dungeons that were going to be much longer than previously before. As games should be the starting areas in the game are easy, short while the next half it starts raising the difficulty.
Why couldn't there be a star piece in the cake? It would be funny, it would get rid of the terrible star hill, and would give a reason for why the cake is alive!

I dont mind the level squish. But I also don't mind high levels. One of my favorite series is the Disgaea series. turn based tactical RPGs that go ridiculously over the top in every regard. These games have a level "cap" of 9,999. Of course that's not the real cap, because you can reincarnate. This drops you back to level 1, but also gives you a number of bonus points to put into your base stats., based on what level you were when you reincarnated. Since stat improvement isb ased off of base stats, this is a very big deal. you do this so many times. For the hardest content, of which there is infinite, your level will probably be around 9,999 * 45. Of course, this has the downside of making a single level meaningless. By the end, you'll be able to gain several hundred levels from not just a single battle, but from executing a single move. That, of course, depends on if you deide to do the literally endless extra content. f you just want to play the main game's story line, you'll probably get to level 90-ish.
25:40 Looking at how that path is constructed it seems you can accidentally stumble upon that invisible path when you're heading up to that house's door. Also I remember the special pillow you can purchase in the Nimbus Inn that gives you dreams when you sleep. Sounds familiar? Probably a nod to Shadow's dreams from FF6. Lot of SMRPG is just about being fun not about grinding.
I feel like the sliding mechanic in pipe vault is an importabt call baclk to the more traditional 2d mario games. Every player remembers having to run and press down to slide under blocks and this portion of pipe vault reminds the character that although this game is different in many ways it's still a mario game.
Don't get me wrong: I love super mario RPG. I agree with all the praise you've given to the game's design. I just want to add that many later games by nintendo took all the concepts from mario RPG and made them even more polished, balanced, and interesting. Here were some of my favorites: mario and Luigi, superstar saga, paper mario, and paper mario: the thousand year door. All of those games have timed battle mechanics, positive-or-neutral RNG, and overworlds with nice platforming (I always found the platforming from an isometric view in mario RPG to be a bit clumsy). Personally, I think those games are more fun to play than mario RPG and actually makes mario RPG feel a bit dated. Still, it's really important to recognize the roots of this sub-genre, and mario RPG will always hold a special place in my heart :)
SMRPG has a lot of music related mini games as well like the Composer part that gets you cards at the juice bar. Mallow's cymbals and of course the kickass music score it had especially final battle music. You can tell the people that made this were musically gifted.

Got an snes classic for Christmas. Gonna start a new game of Mario RPG. I play through this game on and off through the years since it came out. Feels kinda weird playing in pixel perfect mode. Since Nintendo and Square Enix are working together again.... maybe there's hope for a true sequel.

I would use Mario, Bowser, and Geno (whom I always gave the attack bonus on each levelup, never anything else), fill my inventory with Pick-Me-Ups (and whatever offensive items I got like Rock Candy), and just plow through everything. On most playthroughs I would grind to level 30 (I don't remember how, but I'm wondering if I used that save/star trick that was mentioned late in the video, since I do remember doing that). ...I should also note that I was 7 when I played (and subsequently beat) the game for the first time. What's amazing to me about all that in spite of all the depth of combat--all the factors mentioned in this video--the entire game was still simple enough for 7-year-old me to understand and complete. This game remains to this day one of my absolute most favorite games of all time and holds a special place in my heart for a variety of reasons. This was a great video analyzing it--fantastic work.

I played this game for the first time when I was a very small child. I was all the way through bandit's way, fighting the purple yoshi who's name slips me. However I could not defeat him, because I sucked at games. Because I was defeated so bad, I figured I'd have to grind a lot to get strong enough. Star Hill was more or less a lore specific place where you read the wishes. Very nice easter eggs there. I feel like Star Hill is just there to cut you a break and ease you into understanding how to use Toadstool
I like to see the Star Piece on Star Hill similar to the Crystal Star for Chapter 6 in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door. What I mean by this is you already beat the major boss for this star but you are going through a small section after the boss to get the star. In this case the boss in question was the Marrymore boss fight. It was in a way a 3 part boss fight. You begin fighting the 2 chefs while you attack the cake. Then the cake comes alive and you fight the top portion having to put all the candles out before they relight by constantly wailing on the boss and not wasting your turns. The final phase has you fighting the lower part of the cake in a more traditional boss battle. Star Hill was more like a breather after that boss to get it's Star Piece by going through a mini stage. TTYD did something similar. You fought Smorg who is the boss for the 6th Crystal Star but he doesn't give you it when you defeat him. Instead you arrive at Poshley Heights then go through a 2 room mini-dungeon in the form of Poshley Sanctum and solve it's small puzzle and you get the Crystal Star proper.
I also cleared the 3D maze in a a few seconds when I was a kid. And by ''clear'' I mean spammed the jumped button and radomly going in any direction with the control pad.
If our good enough, you don’t need to look at the animation for attacks In Mario and Luigi, I once mastered the jumps to the point I didn’t need to look at the screen
This game was never released here in the UK, so I've never played it. I've played Paper Mario, though, so I'm sure I'd enjoy this game (even if the art style is a little bad in my opinion).
Regarding the sealed door one of the nearby NPCs says they heard something about a crystal and another says a crystal is just a shiny stone. So the game does hint where you can use the shiny stone.

And by ''clear'' I mean spammed the jumped button and radomly going in any direction with the control pad.
booster tower is so memorable
Star hill is another world, and the fact it feels so different only makes it feel so Alien.
What's the game in the bottom right corner during the opening scene? The one with the arms with their respective Lvl.
Are the freebies random? I was under the impression they're timed - that's how it felt to me, anyway.
Son did you shit on Star Hill? I will fight you :|
But nah, great job man!
Star Hill > Rawest Forest

I love the mario rpg series, from this to paper jam, they're all fun.

So that's how you get that damn coin.
Time stamp ?
If our good enough, you don’t need to look at the animation for attacks
In Mario and Luigi, I once mastered the jumps to the point I didn’t need to look at the screen
There's no such thing as a "minigame" there's just a game and that minigame is part of it.
This game was never released here in the UK, so I've never played it. I've played Paper Mario, though, so I'm sure I'd enjoy this game (even if the art style is a little bad in my opinion).
Oh boy. Those are two VERY DIFFERENT GAMES. Both are good but Super Mario RPG is just on another level.
