The (Previous) Unfortunate Fate of Super Mario RPG (Prior to the Remake)

  • This video was made prior to the announcement of the Super Mario RPG remake on Switch, and thus represents the feelings of a fan prior to the remake's announcement, at the peak of frustration with the game's treatment.
    Super Mario RPG was a game that changed the Mario series forever, giving the Mario universe some actual definition while also introducing a formula that makes turn-based RPGs fun. It's the reason why we got Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi to begin with.
    Find out more in the first part of my retrospectives on the Mario RPGs as I take a look at Super Mario RPG.

      Nintendo is well aware of how well received this game is. It was a continuous best seller on the Wii's virtual console as well as the Wii U's eshop. Additionally Geno was one of the top 10 most requested characters since Super Smash Bros Brawl. Which ultimately lead to the inclusion of a Geno mii costume.

    Part of why Super Mario RPG has been forgotten (you know, in addition to hardly ever being re-released), is that it came out in 96, same year as the N64. So, we have an RPG with a special chip that makes the cartridge expensive on a console that Nintendo isn't focusing on anymore. If this came out in 94/95, it would've been way more popular.

    • @DuoStuff
      @DuoStuff  Год назад +38

      Yeah, that certainly didn't help matter. It was such a late-console release that many might've skipped it. (I just didn't feel the need to bring it up as The Geek Critique discussed that in his video.)

    There was an interview last year with Chihiro Fujioka, one of the co-directors for the original game, and he had expressed how, even after all these years, he still wants to do a sequel to this lost gem, before retiring.
    And while it may certainly seem like unrealistic wishful thinking, I don't think it's entirely out of the realm of possibility. There have been instances of throwing longtime fans a bone lately.
    -Mario Party not faring super well, after a formula change? Superstars went back to the basics.
    -Mario Strikers not getting any kind of attention, within a decade and a half? Got a proper third installment, just last year.
    -Mario games not thinking outside the typical norm for characters to feature in their rosters? We got Baby Wario, who had been left dormant since his debut, in Dr. Mario World, Poochy in Mario Kart Tour, and even guys like Foreman Spike and Chunky Kong in the recent movie.
    Hell, even when looking outside of Mario, Metroid Prime managed to get a remaster, after years of it just sounding like rumors and fake buzz. So again, nothing should be entirely dismissed as impossible, at this point. Unlikely, sure, but never impossible.

    • @DuoStuff
      @DuoStuff  Год назад +37

      I don't think it's impossible, but it just feels like Nintendo and Square won't bother.
      And if we're getting remakes, while I'd love a SMRPG remake, I'd *really* like to see a Thousand Year Door Remake.

      Yeah, that would certainly be a nice surprise to see.
      In terms of how I became familiar with this game, I hadn't played it for the longest time, but I knew of the push to try to get Geno into Smash, and then when his costume came back in Sephiroth's showcase, his fan base got a lot of mocking and scorn thrown at them, and I just felt awful for them that night.
      I've always been super sympathetic for underdogs, so the next day, my sister and I had gone to this retro game store, to try and get some old consoles looked at, and I found a used copy of the game. I took it home, played through it, and I had an absolute blast with it.

    • @DuoStuff
      @DuoStuff  Год назад +19

      Yeah that's the thing: Smash fans were so unnecessarily toxic about that situation, but I don't think a lot of them realize that there's a reason why people wanted him so desperately. Not just because the game itself is remarkably good, but because for a lot of people, this was *their* first major game they really cared about, much the same way TTYD was for me.
      I really hope Geno does get in one day too, even if I highly doubt that will ever happen.

      @@DuoStuff Honestly I'd kinda prefer if Smithy got in instead of Geno, but that's mostly bc we don't have that much playable villain rep in Smash Bros. Heck, we don't even have a playable *Eggman,* and you'd think that'd be the obvious choice for a playable Smash villain...

    • @DuoStuff
      @DuoStuff  Год назад +6

    I ran a super mario rpg fansite (super mario rpg'ers paradise) in the 90s. It's how I learned how to write html, because at the time, there was no editing software. It's sad to me that a game that I loved so much during my teenage years would be so utterly forgotten now. The fan community back then was huge, and very active - in an era where few people were on the internet my site got tens of thousands of visitors to it. Now you can't even buy it on the Switch. Truly a sad end to one of the best games ever made.

      I think it's interesting how the current state of awareness around Mario RPG has kind of skewed younger gamers' perception of what that period of time was like. I see some comments here that suggest the game might have needed help with sales or exposure and I think you and I can agree that was faaar from the case. I for one remember our Blockbusters having a whole shelf dedicated to just Mario RPG copies that were actively being rented out for weeks. At the time we felt more than certain that a Mario RPG sequel would be around the corner, or at least that we would see some of its newly introduced characters in something again. The course of events was a surprise to literally everybody.
      I think it's even more interesting when you contrast Mario RPG's history with something like the Fire Emblem series today, a series that was Japan-locked for years and overshadowed by games like Shining Force that are completely off the map today. It's almost like a coinflip of reality. I bet the younger Golden Sun fans who considered Mario RPG obscure during their time now realize what this feels like, to see a great game you love fall into the shadows through no fault of its own.

      @@DuoStuff Super Mario RPG getting a 3D Remake... not only will that give people a new interest in the game, but we could use those in-game models for fan animations. Take that FP Flower for example, that one resembled a lot like the Classic Fire Flower of the 80s, people might use that for SMBSS Mario (recreated nicely by JCThornton) to transform into Fire Mario. We might also get 3D models of specific items that were original looking, but couldn't be turned into a sprite... like the Kerokero Cola item.

    You know one thing (among others) that I really appreciated about this game coming back to it is how short and sweet the towns and dungeons are, it never feels like you spend too long in one place and they pack them with just the right amount of things to do that I don't get that "There should've been more" feeling. Also, considering when this game was made, it had a lot of QoL additions to it that you really wouldn't start recently seeing in RPG's until more recently like making it so you could just go anywhere from the map without having to actually backtrack through an area to go back to older dungeons and towns for example or how dying doesn't make you load your last save, you still keep your levels and items you got and instead you just get sent back to the last save block you were at.
    To be honest, if this game were to ever be remade the only things i'd actually want out of it are updated sprites (to make reading enemy attacks easier) and the ability to swap Mario out of the party cause in my eyes it's already a near perfect game.

    Part of the reason for it's obscurity is because they flat out just never released it in Europe. Okay, so it was _eventually_ available on the Virtual Console, but that was a decade or so after the fact. Nowadays, you need to have some older system or a mini-SNES... (which might also count as an older system?) to play it (or a perfectly cromulent emulator).

      @@DuoStuff Same reason they cancelled Starfox 2, it was simply too close to the release of the "Ultra 64" (as it was known before launch). The European release of SNES games would usually be anywhere from 3 months to a full year later (probably the later considering this game was dialogue heavy), and the N64 came out only 4 months after the American release of SMRPG. So, while I understand the whole "not wanting to compete with yourself" thing; they probably _should_ have released it in 1997 after Mario 64 and before Zelda 64 when there was a huge gap that needed filling.

The good ones at least, that makes it so interesting. I think it might be the whole thing about putting Mario in really weird and interesting scenarios, giving us a perspective of the Mushroom Kingdom that we never had. And it all wouldn't be real if not for this amazing game.

    1) In monstro town there are four stat-boosting accessories gained by doing challenges.
    a) The ghost medal. This is by far the easiest one to get. All you have to do is sleep in the room with the bed with the note by the Three Musty Fears on the mushroom lamp. They will whisper to mario in his sleep that they want to play Find the Flag. Their flags are invisible but they're in the same place in every cartridge and playthrough. One is behind the flower sign at the entrance to rrose town. One is right next to mario's ned. And one is at the finish line at yoshi's island. Sleep in the bed again once you've found them and they'll give you the medal.
    b) The jinx belt. Defeat the martial artist on the second floor a total of three times to get this.
    c) The quartz charm. There's a method to defeating culex as described above. Take out his crystals first. There are four of them and they each have one elemental weakness. Fire, thunder, Ice, and Jump. Jump is an element in the game.
    d) The super jacket. The last one may be the hardest to get depending on your point of view. Mario's super jump ability allows a theoretically limitless number of consecutive jumps as long as your timing is right. One of the monsters sitting around a table in the same room as the dancing starfish will tell the exact number of your personal record of consecutive jumps. If you make it to 100 you will get the super jacket. Perhaps even harder than timing 100 jumps just right is trying to keep track of how many you've done in your head.
    2) The "starfish that humps you" is actually dancing to the last eight notes of toadofsky's symphony at tadpole pond. The first two are as follows: behind frogfucius after you unlock rose town, and the singing miners in the moleville mines near where you blew up the wall. As you complete the melody you'll receive membership cards to the tadpole pond juice bar that allow you to buy more powerful elixirs.
    3) Like many JRPGs, this game has a casino. Talk to knife guy at booster's palace and win his game ten times. You don't have to win consecutively but he does deduct one point each time you lose. The game involves keeping track of which hand the red ball stops in when he rapidly juggles it. He will give you the Bright Card which grants access to the casino. The casino location is as follws. Go down one of the pipes in bean valley where you fight smilax. The pipe you're looking for is full of enemies as well as a golden chain chomp. Defeat the chain chomp and Jump three times where the chain chomp once stood. A platform will appear opening the way to the cadino. There are three games you can play at the casino: blackjack, slot machine, and grate guy's game. Grate guy's game involved looking either right or left and you win by looking the opposite direction he raises his hand. Unlike knife guy, his game is pure chance so doesn't deduct losses. If you win 100 times you will receive the Star Egg which deals exactly 100 damage to all enemies and is infinitely reusable.
    4) You can get Yoshi's Cookies on yoshi's island. This is an item that summons yoshi to eat an enemy and then lay an egg containing an item. You can get them three at a time by talking to one of the yoshis or you can get more by betting on the yoshi races. You can use the yoshi cookie on the Amoeba enemy found at smithy's realm to get as many max mushrooms as you wsnt.
    5) The game has a premium currency called frog coins which is used to buy item with unique effects at a couple shops in the game such as Earlier Times, which allows you to starta battle over. Frog coins found while adventuring don't regenerate but you can also get them through mimigames and converting regular coins. Late in the game in bowser's castle there's a room where croco will sell you items and magikoopa will conjure a treasure chest containing an limitless amount of coins. However, you can't keep coming back for infinite coins because you can't enter browser's castle through the back entrance, so you''ll have to go through the entire castle again.
    6) If I remember correctly, there are only about three places where you can get with free XP with a super star. For obvious reasons they don't regenerate for the rest of the game.
    7) Even though his physical design isn't any particular character that appears in the final fantasy series, it's still likely that designers intended culex to be from the realm of final fantasy since the boss battle music from final fantasy IV plays when you fight him.
    8) Some of these details may be inaccurate as it's been a long time since I played the game. While I was trying to fact check this lengthy comment I discovered that someone actually made a mod called Super Mario RPG Armageddon, which contains more final fantasy bosses, pokemon, and boss rushes.
