65 Drums really helped me on making drum covers! I recorded my drum covers with irig and it sounded really good! Thank you 65 Drums!
I've been using an Alesis DM10X kit forever now. It's about 5 years old but still kinda high end. It seems pretty middle of the road and does the job! But you hit the nail on the head when you said "plastic-like" when describing the sound they give. Thank you so much for all this info, I've been looking for advice/information like this to get a better sound and you made it easy to understand!!
Justin you are doing a fantastic job on your RUclips channel it is absolutely fantastic I watch it all the time
I've been playing the a Roland TD25 KV. it's about 7 years old now but still a great kit and a huge upgrade from my old kit which was a Yamaha DTXPress IV.
Just got the new vad503 with td27 and will be jumping into the drum recording world, thanks for the great info
Hey thanks for the great info, I play 2 e kits, an old DT Xpress Yamaha, Roland td 50k, Mapex acoustic 6 piece Mars pro.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This guy gets it!!! So helpful.
Dude! I've got that same stacked drum kit drink holder in my studio too!
I use Roland TD-12 and a TDW-20 module triggering Superior Drummer 3; Addictive Drums 2; Steven Slate Drums 5; Native Instruments Abbey Road 60s and Modern Drummer software etc instantiated in Logic Pro X. I’ve been recording this way since 2008 on original recording projects and covers Thanks for sharing your knowledge- it certainly will help those who are new to edrumming and recording.
I’m using an Alesis D4 drum brain with a hodgepodge of drum pads, Scarlett Sapphire 18i8o interface, Mac and Superior Dummer2
Love your advice, it really helps alot
Thanks dude!
I have always had acoustic kits. I can't really afford soundproof walls, a set of mics and all those things to record my drums but I can afford a decent yamaha kit and that's what I'm going for some time this year (hopefully) I want to record demos for my band and do something better than what I do now. thank you for this video. I'm hoping to get my life easier and not worry about what hour of the day I practice my drums
Thanks for the video
Alesis Command mesh head set. Great for lower end, they sound decent and take a beating!
Yup, I turned mine into a 16 piece monster!
I just bought a Roland Vad306 last week. I plan on using Steven Slate drums
awesome video! currently learning about vdrums before i make a purchase but i'll be using AD2 and FL Studio for the moment, until I deserve an upgrade to SD3 lol.
Y
Great video!👍
thanks Justin, your channel is fantastic! it’s helping me a lot to convert my Pearl Decade acoustic kit to an e-drum kit! Recording and mixing acoustic drums is really difficult, but alao fun when you achive a good result. I‘m using Logic Pro and a Steinberg/Yamaha interface with a AKG 8 mic setup. The AKGs are sold, so i’m wondering how the recording will be when my e-drum kit is up and running... anyway your and Josh‘s tips are helping a lot, thx!!
Thanks dude!
Got my TD1-DMK last year and use it with EZDrummer in Studio One. Not a great module, it's the most basic one Roland make, but it's amazing with Ezdrummer and the module has the old 808 patch.
Hi Josh, I am using a Drum-Tec Jam kit with a TD-17 module. I am new to Lee tropic drums and getting lost in the recording process. Thanks for the help.
Alesis DDrum. Not the best, but they take a beating. Thanks for the recording info. I have alot to learn!
I use a 5-Pin MIDI Cable from my Alesis e-kit to my Steinberg UR44 Interface, then from that the USB to PC. My UR44 doesn't have a USB MIDI In, so... plus, I'm using a long Cable between the e-kit & Interface. 👍
Great vid ! Thx ! I am looking to play Native Instruments Maschine MK2 drum kits with my Awesome !! Roland TD-17 kit. Haven’t found anyone on here doing that :0
Awesome!
Roland TD11k. Its been a struggle finding a way to record, especially with my friend who makes edm.
I love superior drummer 3 so much I actually use it love as well with my Alesia DM10 MKII Pro. Works better than the drug’s module
As ever great Video Justin
This is the thing reading through the comments guys are asking about where to find the drivers .
For example we all know Roland have ditched support on older modules
We was recording on to BFD drums some ten years back via a TD4 into Cubase without any additional driver download
so this well,, It's puzzling.
and the question is
Do you have to have a driver if you would like to try VST kits such as Superior , BFD, etc with modules now
Many thanks Justin
We just got Alesis Nitro drums and will use them to control AIR Strike 2.
I find recording with VST's to be the easy part, and the hard part is getting the real time monitoring to feel right. No matter how low I get the latency (under 2ms round trip), I can still "feel" the latency, especially during fast play. I've worked around this by sending both the audio out from my TD27 along with midi using USB "vendor" mode, and monitor the drum module sound output only (my guitar tracks and the click track still plays back, so I record along to them). This way I get the midi and audio tracks recorded separately, and the playing experience feels like I'm only working with the module - meaning 0 latency. There's been a couple times were I actually just ended up using the raw audio tracks instead of using the midi with vst, as some of the Roland kits sound pretty darn good after you tweak them a bit. I like this option for "non-acoustic" kits, where I may not want to end up using a VST after all.
i hope 2 years later you'd have managed to fix your latency, but to me just changing sample rate or buffer size already feels really comfortable... sometimes it can be also the driver selection in your DAW. As an ableton user in Windows for example you can try Asio, the drum module (TD17 IN in my case) or any other that works for you. Anyways wish that helps if it's still a struggle. Any updates from you?
Exactly the way I have been using my TD27, and I agree you can get the built-in kits sounding good if you spend some time on it. Recording a performance, drums or anything else, has to feel natural if it is going to be your best. Zero latency is the way to go. Glad to see your comment here as I was starting to feel like I was the only one doing things this way :)
@icaroioi Can you tell me if each track is using a different midi channel, or all tracks on the same channel. I know drums are usually on midi channel 10. I have a Roland td-17kvx, Cakewalk by Bandlab, Windows 11 desktop. The only vst I have is SI drums and I'm wondering will I have an issue in that I have one more cymbal and one more Tom than the vst. Really appreciate if you could help me out.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks guys. Still a little over-whelming but I will keep you posted how I do. I have the Alesis Strike Pro II with the expansion pack. Not like the cymbals. I am picky about my cymbals and I miss getting so many different sounds out of my New Beat hi-hat and 24" Medium ride, but you give me hope.
Hey, great video! I'm using a Roland TD4, but only audio inputs so far. I feel limited when it comes to correcting my not-on-time-groove, as well as experimenting with sounds on single elements *after* recording. So this looks promising and I will try something like this. Keep drumming and cheers!
Did it work out for you?
Great helpfull vid ! I'm using Jobekey with TD30 & Superior Drummer 3.0
i guess Im quite off topic but do anybody know a good place to stream newly released movies online ?
@Kyng Ronin i watch on Flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Clayton Remy Yea, I've been using flixzone for since march myself =)
@Clayton Remy thank you, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) Appreciate it!
@Kyng Ronin no problem =)
Thanks for all these very informative videos, Justin.
I have a question, how would you compare the jobeky drums with the drum tec jam and the drum tec diabolo. I am a bit struggling here to make a decision about what to purchase, in order to get the best for my budget.
I'm especially corious about jobeky, seen the impressively lower prices.
Thanks in advance!
Hi! Awesome video. I have addictive drums plugin which has great drum sounds. Two questions: 1) do you think a drum module like the one in this video will result in noticeably more natural, real-sounding drums as opposed to a keyboard controller ( both using the drum plugin I mentioned)? 2) Do you think a drum kit as cheap as the Alexis Nitro Mesh Kit for example ($400 approx) will deliver the same realness and ability as something like the module that’s in this video (using addictive drums plugin)? Thank you so much!
Great video, thanks! What about mimic pro... Does it have the USB output? I searched a lot on line.. But can't find. Maybe roland td50 has worse sounds but more simple to connect to pc and use superior drummer... Or ezdrummer. I can't understand if Pearl Mimic pro has the same possibilities.
Nice tips dude, im using a Roland TD-11 with Fl Studio 20
glad to hear the roland is working in fl studio, trying to choose a kit myself atm
All good, thanks. A wee bit misleading, talking about usb in on both ends, headphones in to audio interface. Better to describe the signal flow, for me. USB out of the td30, audio out to headphones. Good vid!
Thanks for the informations. I have a question. How can we listen the sound coming from drum software while recording? Because the sound coming from drum module and software is different and I want to hear that. If we can, will there be too much latency?
a great video, Justin and guest appearance by Josh Cameron
Thanks John, It was great to have him on the channel!
John D Robinson thanks John!!
you're welcome, Josh!
Hi Justin i just Subscribed to your channel you have awsome content!! Keep up the good work!! Question im purchasing an E-kit....im stuck between the Roland td17..Yamaha..or Alesis...im spending $1800...what fo you suggest and just fyi i would like to hook up my Superior Drummer 3 can you respond and give me your input on just the E- kit would be best for the buck? Thanks Justin
I’m trying to figure out how to use the presets on the Roland td25kv and record them into the DAW
Just subscribed! Now, I record on a DP32SD, I now have a MPC Live(still learning), my Vdrums consist of a TD12 & SPD30
I have tweeked the TD12 pretty much to satisfaction & the SPD30 takes care of most of the cymbals. The MPC is a hybrid unit controller/stand alone, and i'm searching for suggestions to maximize this trio, cause i'm not finding anybody out of the box, that uses the MPC to make rock music.
Any input would be very appreciated!
Millenium 850! nice set for the price, but i have some issue with exdrummer2. Cant map the drums
Any chance you could cover how K.J. Sawka does his setup?
Dont have actual drums because of space but I do own an alesis sample pad. Can I use that with this same setup?
JUSTIN!!! I hope you can do a tutorial on EFNOTE5 as well since there’s not much here on RUclips about that kit. I tried recording with my EFNOTE with iRig but am I supposed to put it on line R or L output? The sounds are like boxy. So i think it’s just the connection.
We miss you!!!
Hi, I have an old TD- 1O Roland module. I can't seem to find any drivers for it online. Does this mean I won't be able to record off of it ??
Does anyone know if you can use Superior Drummer with a TD-17 module? All these videos are using the the TD-30
Hi, I have been desperately trying to figure out how to map the hi hat for open/closed and everything in between yet all the v drum mapping I've tried doesn't work for the Roland hi hat edge and if it does it's either set to open or closed. Advice would be greatly appreciated
Hi there .. brillian info . si just saw this in 2020.. Could you please advice how I could connect by DTXpress special IV to my laptop.. HELP !!!
What about us old school hardware guys that don't use DAW's? I use a Roland VS2000cd. At the moment for drums I trigger samples from an Elektron Analog Rytm with a Yamaha DT Xpress via midi. It works well to a degree, but I lose the drum feel; lack of roll ability... But the drum sounds are much better than modules aside from maybe the Pearl Mimic Pro and maybe ATV AD5. I am considering switching to one of those.
You don't have to use a DAW if you don't want to, you can just record your module sound. Recording midi into DAW just gives you the ability to access the very best sound samples like Superior Drummer 3.
I have a TD-3 so I just plug the audio out into my sound card.
Hi, love your content bro. :) I have a question? I'm pretty new to my roland td17 (3 mo.) Is there a way to record video and the drums in real-time. For my guitar content I use OBS but can't seem to get it to work the same way. I have a helix LT with a built in -8 in and 8 out audio interface. Would that work. Thanks . :)
I have a Roland td3, it doesn't have a USB. I'm looking for a low cost module with USB, what do you recommend? What are some of the lowest price modules with USB that will work for this purpose. I'm planning on recording with Reaper and Steven Slate drums.
I have the yamaha dtx 402 set which is cheap but works for me in my small apt. Can I use them via midi with ez drummer to record into presonus studio 1?
Alesis Nitro Mesh with extra crash and china, i also use Superior Drummer 3
Hi, I´m using a roland TD-9, and kind off newbie in this. So, I have a midi-usb converter cable, but to hear what the software is playing I need a audio Interface. But, how the sound from the computer gets to the audio interface? Because the midi is bypassing the audio interface...
Yamaha dtx502 to midi acoustica mixcraft 8 pro on my laptop. Cant find an android version.. what do I do?
Will this all work with the aD5 from ATV and does anyone have experience with this?
I wanna know how well this works
Im using a Dtronic q2 plus and i cant find a module driver for it
How would it work if you don’t wanna record just have at a gig but use other sounds like ez drummer
Hey there! I'm using TD-KVX any guesses on how to get a better sound quality overall? I'm connecting through USB directly to the computer using Audacity to record, but the record sounds quite trashy. Any tips?
Start a series were you go over the pads of any drum set requested
Can you tell me what’s is happening when playing 32 second notes in midi and it comes back playing 16th notes on most DAW Systems. Like if it’s not receiving ghost notes and fancy chopz. Like they are there but it’s coming back to you wrong. Is there a fix to this. Example. If you played the 1st Drum rudiments of all Times. The long buzz roll. And it comes back to you in a Single stroke roll how can that be corrected ?
Do you have to download Superior Drummer to use MIDI to USB?
I'm having a hard time getting things to work. I have a MIDI to USB cable plugged in straight to the Mac. Any suggestions?
I'm using a TD-30 and I'm having issues with GarageBand. There's an incorrect mapping of the HH. Any idea?
Any good but less expensive alternatives then superior drummer?
Just got myself a Roland TD-30KV and dont know how to record via usb. Is it just plug & play? 😁
I’m using a td4 and it has no usb but it has a midi out so what does a guy do then?
Helpful and promising video! Anyway, I´ve got a question: is it necessary to buy an additional VST program? I´d like to use my TD-30 sounds only for recording via Reaper.
Nope. You can record your td-30 on board sounds via usb in Reaper.
true, but seems like the sounds cannot be exported/rendered. Someone knows a solution?
The Roland Td20 doesn't have a USB can this still be used with superior drummer.
Hey Josh, I'm using the XM-110S drum model, it's from taiwan, however when I use the USB audio interface method, I encounter an issue. When recording there is no issue, but when I playback the audio fazes out after a couple of seconds for some reason. Do you have any idea how to troubleshoot this or what I can do? Would rly appreciate a reply !
But how do you do/sync the video
Any tips for recording in Windows? I've used Aiso4all to reduce latency but find the sound driver resource hogging to be a pain. E.g. if I want to jam to Spotify using Addictive Drummer, it's just not possible because my daw is using the Audio driver. Looked into so many solutions, why does Mac just work and windows can't figure it out
Most drum modules have a USB port... Uh, my TD-20 does not... Really looking for a Midi-to-USB connection. I have the cable for it, but it just doesn't work and I don't know how to troubleshoot it.
I'm using an alesis dm5
so here is the question of all questions: what is the cheapest roland kit i can get that will trigger superior drummer without playing like crap?
What exactly is the pentagon/house USB? I can't seem to find exact info on that
What’s the setting your using
5:30 Unfortunately not all modules have USB output. I have TD-20 and it doesn't have one. Also, I just purchased Scarlett 2i4 (2nd Gen) to use for MIDI + Audio and guys be warned, the current drivers for this USB ASIO interface does NOT play nice with some applications (incl. Voicemeeter, which is a wicked virtual mixer for playing SD3/AD2 along to your favorite tracks). I'm currently going back and forth with Focusrite to see if they're gonna fix the timing on their drivers...
Would love to see a video on "Playing along to your favorite songs using VST drum software" - how to set up the hardware, software recommendations, driver recommendations.... so that you can just put on the headphones and hear a mix of SD3 + Spotify tracks (for example) while having playable latency, on Windows 10.
HERE IS THE CURRENT PROBLEM WITH FOCUSRITE USB DRIVERS: forum.vb-audio.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=506&p=1191
Thanks for letting me know, i’ve been thinking about buying
65 Drums no worries ...just messaged u more details thru Facebook.
How powerful must my laptop be to use a VST with my Td30? I need to buy one and I need to know the minimal pc to buy.
get a macbook. Or just a regular windows laptop with a audio interface to cut down on latency
Drums are the best. :)
I'm using Roland TD-11
For the drums I use for all of my gold records, each drum's sound is a combination of every drum ever recorded from top 1000 songs (thanks to artificial intelligence algorithms), thereby allowing for the drum's sound to be 1000 times better than expected.
incredible
Can we hear an example please?
how do you record with td27
HI there, how can i have the drummer hear the mix through the drum module? is this possible?
Hi Larry, I think the best way to do this would be to set the output to the module itself if it's directly connected to the computer that's running the DAW. If you're thinking more so in a studio environment where you'd like to send the audio to multiple people at once then I think it becomes a little more tricky!
Usb does not work with 2box. Here its only possible with midi.
Roland percussion sound module TD 9
Hotspot fix?
I know is a 3 years old video. But how to record video(exemple i play the drum) and record sound the track you play. I hope you understand what i try to say. thank
Get a usb compliant audio interface to record with your iPad/iPhone
Hi Josh! May I ask for your advice, in case I would like to record midi with my TD-9. The audio interface would be a roland BR 800 would it be possible? What Do you think? Thank You!
dafi723 Hi dude! Yeah this should be absolutely fine, although the BR-800 is quite a big recorder and you probably wouldn’t need it for Simple midi recording and superior drummer.
I think you’ll find it way easier with something as simple as a Scarlett 2i2 USB interface and a UM-ONE midi to USB lead from Roland since the TD9 doesn’t have that USB in!
Hope this helps :)
Thank You for the advice, much appreciated!! To point is that I already have a BR800. Is it possible to replace the Scarlett 2i2 with that? And yes, I definately need the midi to usb cable! Thanks!
dafi723 yeah of course - the Scarlett 2i2 could replace the BR-800. With the method of recording I talk about in this video, you plug the drum module directly into the computer - not into the Interface. However I think with the BR-800 you’d have to plug the drums into that and record it with that if that makes sense? So yeah, Scarlett 2i2 is cheap and absolutely fantastic for this method !
what daw can i use for os?
You know the man's drum cover is good when Justin Greenwald calls it dope.
Does anyone know an Driver download link for the 2Box drumit five Mk2 ??? I can't find it
I need it too!!!
I use a DM10 studio kit from Alesis in my studio.
How do you like it?
I DO NOT.
Can't you record both Audio and MIDI at the same time into your DAW while playing the e-drums?
yes
yes, but I’m not sure why I’d want to. I’d get both tracks sounding in my ear at the same time.
@@andrealuvshouse Oh that would be bad but maybe just mute one of them (though still being recorded) or so? I'm sure that you can record inside a DAW without hearing it in the headphones/speakers...?
Yo! I've literally watched 100 videos of how to connect e-drums to vts. But I can't figure out how to make it work with my TD-15!! Seems like its the only module that nothing seems to work with... I want to connect my TD-15 with my mac book pro 15 (macOS Big Sur 11.4) Roland is not making drivers for it anymore so Im trying to use a midi to usb cable. But can't figure out how to get my mac to recognize it.. Im starting to loose my mind.. Do I have to spend 500 bucks on a new td-17 module to make it work? (I also rock the silver sparkle diabolo Drum-Tec kit ;)
Using a huxley
