They accepted there was something between them. Of course, he called me 'Frankenstein', but in reality, that was a compliment because I was definitely the Frankenstein monster. The only things he said about me, he said because they were was true. One time, I heard him scream: ‘George Foreman’s not a real fighter. All he wants to do is kill somebody out there’. I remember asking myself - how did he know that? I wasn’t actually trying to box people, I was actually trying to kill people in the ring. He was telling the truth. Muhammad was the most gifted person I have ever seen. That goes for politicians, movie stars, or anyone. Liz Taylor and Richard Burton had some of it, but not as much as Muhammad Ali. He had everything - charisma, charm, looks and great athletic ability - and you hated him because the guy was handsome. You thought 'If I could just mess his face up a little', but you couldn’t get near him in that ring. When I lost to Muhammad in the former Zaire, I was full of hate. I said to myself 'I’m going to come back, and I’m going to get him because I hate him'. Then I left boxing, and I was on the street corner preaching. I’d cut off my hair, my moustache, and a lot of people were passing me by. Then one day I started preaching that I had lost to Muhammad Ali, and I'd fought the great Joe Frazier, and it was those names that made people stop and pay some attention to me. It was in that moment, for the first time, I really appreciated that I had been in the ring with him. Who cared if I’d lost … Just to be associated with that name of Muhammad Ali was a blessing in my life. Was he a great boxer? No, he wasn’t. Muhammad was not a great boxer. I say that because his greatness went beyond boxing, beyond just being a boxer. As a matter of fact, it would be belittling to him to label him ‘a great boxer’ because then people wouldn’t know that he changed the world. He really did. He changed the whole world. Give that title to Joe Louis or someone like him who really was a boxer. It wasn’t about being a great boxer. Sure, he was a great boxer, but there have been a lot of better boxers. His greatness was beyond the sport of boxing. Boxing was such a small part of what he could do. I remember when I won the heavyweight championship of the world, we didn’t want to be called 'champion', what we really wanted was to be 'the guy who beat Muhammad Ali'. We wanted that more than to be champion of the world. That’s really what we wanted. To beat Muhammad Ali. The truth is - nobody could beat Muhammad Ali. Even when you beat him, people said you hadn’t really beaten him, nobody would say that he had lost, and they still wanted to get his autograph, and get the chance to get hugged and kissed by him. Even when you had the belt. He made great society changes. I think with Muhammad Ali, when he went to Europe, Africa, Saudi Arabia, the whole world wanted to touch him. Period. And all of a sudden they realised that this man had changed what people had looked at as beautiful. He defined beauty, handsome and brains. That changed the whole world. Not only in America. His greatness was abroad as well. After 1981 we became the best of friends. By 1984, we loved each other. I am not closer to anyone else in this life than I am to Muhammad Ali. Why? We were forged by that first fight in Zaire and our lives are indelibly linked, and the photographs, inextricably linked as young men and old men. As men, we have a love for each other. In 1974, I was a big brooding mean heavyweight: I’ve become in a way like him. When I'm asked if I learnt anything from him, what I truly learnt from him - because I honestly hit him with some of the heaviest shots I’ve ever hit anyone with - I realised for the first time I was faced by a man who could not go down even if he wanted to. He couldn’t fall because too many people were pulling for him. And I learnt that when I was fighting Michael Moorer [to become the oldest heavyweight champion in history, and oldest champion at that time.] Sure I was being hit by shots and he was being hit by a lot of shots, but I remembered in that fight - and the one against Evander Holyfield - that when people depend on you, you just can’t decide I’m going down. You got to fight for what they believe in. That’s what I learned from Muhammad Ali. Punches can hurt but you can’t go down when people are praying for you. You've got to stand there and take your punches. I didn’t know that when I fought him, but I knew that afterwards. Maybe we are defined by our spirits. In Africa, with those people screaming for him, Ali just couldn’t do it. He just couldn't go down. When you have people pulling and praying for you, it’s a hard thing to be defeated. I think in the world of international sport, not just in America, you have Muhammad Ali. Then you have the rest. He is the standard bearer for American sports. That era when Joe Frazier was heavyweight champion of the world, when I was heavyweight champ, and when Muhammad Ali was heavyweight champion was a golden era, that will never be repeated. There was Jerry Quarry, Earnie Shevers, all the way down the line, deep, there were so many great contenders. There will never be an era with so many contenders, when, on any given night, one of those men could beat the other. That was the greatest era of boxing. Period. I hope I live to see another era like that. But I don’t think we will. In my day, I’ve met a lot of World War II survivors, true heroes. You would not even notice if they had a wooden leg or a wooden arm, or one eye. You don’t feel sorry for them. You feel blessed that they participated in the war for your sake. So whenever I see Muhammad Ali, I feel such pride because he is a hero. Heroes always have their scars. Some you can see, some you read about later on. It’s just that we know about his. That man is a hero. What he endured, and what he suffered, is just what all heroes go through. He’s not ashamed of it. He became the Greatest to me when he came out in front of the whole world and lit the Olympic torch in Los Angeles. He wasn’t ashamed. And to this day I am proud of him. He’s a hero. I become a part of him every day. Every day I love him more. He doesn’t have to say anything now. The time has come where there is nothing else left to say. He said it all. He’s the greatest American that ever lived. We have heroes, they weren’t representing anything. This is a real one, here. There should be a Muhammad Ali Day in America. "In hindsight I am so glad. He turned out to be one of the greatest boxers of all time. I would have got up and I could have really got hurt. If there was a quick count, I only benefited, " He was the greatest personality that sports has ever seen, or ever will see. He was the greatest personality ever. "That night something strange and mysterious happened to me. I lost, of course, and I just couldn't understand. The punch that I had learnt to count on. I ran those punches and nothing happened. I thought it was kind of mysterious that I myself would be counted out.
If Ali wouldn't have been stripped of his title back in his prime time , I don't think there was any chance for foreman and Frazier would even stand as a challenger.

MaccmandagunmanECG97S McCaul - it was recognized that the Vietnam war was an unnecessary war. His conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court with an 8-0 vote by the judges. What has war achieved for the USA?? What has war achieved for the Veterans? Those who are able to come back; some are disabled, lost arms or legs, jobless, PTSD, no hope, many suicides committed. Muhammad Ali stood up for his rights and beliefs. A black man who dealt with segregation, could not be served in an all white restaurant, racism, hatred, unfairness. Their rights were minimal compared to white Americans. Then the armed forces need him to be drafted? So America goes to war and now he must serve the country which failed to abide by its own principles and foundations? You are a joke.
Everyone had the same option to refuse so not sure why you call him a coward! Nobody was taken against their will they had option to refuse!!! So how is ali a coward he actually risked going to prison and lost his titles and ability to keep fighting if he went he only had to do fighting shows not fight! Ridiculous comment just absurd it was probably a harder decision to not go!! 🥊 ali was no coward who he fought and what he achieved no coward could do that!

@@rexrexrex67 Ali is much more than those losses. Ali was a special breed, you should never compare Ali with Mayweather. They can never be in the same Class.
I'm reminded of my step father, the only father I ever had. He told me when Ali first started, he watched every fight, he said, "That's the greatest boxer I've ever seen. As long as you live never never bet against him."(big praise as the old man loved Joe Louis). The old man didn't hesitate to tell any one who said anything bad about Ali "Love him or hate him, he stood up for what he believed. They took everything he had away from him, yet he stood strong. Now he's got it all back, you got to admire a man like that." I read Muhammad's book The Greatest, while visiting the old man, he was watching the movie, on tv. I mentioned I read the book, he said tell me about it. Dad only had a 3rd grade education, reading wasn't a strong point. I proceeded to give him an oral book report. He listened like a little kid, his eyes twinkled. I'll never forget that. The old man was gone 4 yrs later from cancer. But I remember when he said "Ali would've beaten Joe Louis, easily." Shocking but true. The old man taught me to respect people, all people. Treat them how you'd like to be treated. And most important perhaps, don't let anyone stand in your way when you're chasing your dreams. Let people talk bad all they want, you be you. I miss him so much, he's been gone since 1986, but I think of him often. I think of Ali too, both were what was once called "Mens men". Meaning the type of man every man should strive to be. I'm done.

It was a foggy Day in San Francisco back in 1964. I was taking a sip of water from the drinking fountain in School, late Afternoon, and a kid yelled out " Cassius Clay" is fighting Sonny Liston Tonight. Let me say this. This Guy was The Fastest Fighter ever seen! " Lightning in a Bottle". He was good looking, had the best personality, called the rounds of his fights, Shook up the world beating Sonny Liston, and the world was truly shocked when he beat Big George Foreman in the " Rumble in the Jungle". He was the " People's Champion of all races. He was for the underdog! He turned boxing into a art, as he broke out with the " Ali Shuffle" in 1966 against Cleveland Williams. I was fortunate to meet Ali three times, and have a picture of us shaking Hands. He out shined all sports and people back in the Day. A American Icon. He truly will be missed. When asked who my favorite athlete was, my answer is not Joe Montana, Babe Ruth, or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; my favorite athlete was and always will be Muhammad Ali.
It is an indisputable fact that Ali at his prime was untouchable not even by Tyson. The facts were verified by true experienced experts. Ali in his prime was lightning fast, has a long reach of 71" as opposed to Tyson's 63" and simply was unbeatable. Did you not see how he nonchalantly avoided heavy punches simply by moving away his head. This action is unique to Ali. Nobody ever could pull off the same stunt. Now imagine if Tyson tried to get close Ali would just move away and at the same time jab Tyson's face until he could no longer see. This happened to Liston and many others. Even Foreman who had punching power as great as Tyson was defeated by Ali.The 3 lost years only left people imagining what could have been achieved by Ali at the top of his game. To put it simply, Ali is the greatest ever inside the ring and a legendary human being outside the ring.
What made Ali so great his what he achieved after being banned from boxing in his prime and returning to beat guys younger and stronger. This is a concept most who've never trained or competed at competition level will never grasp. And what makes a lot of fake fans look ignorant with their negative inexperienced based comments... ...
No boxer should ever be mentioned in the same sentence as Ali. What he did for boxing, for politics, for humanity, no one has done that before and no one will do it again!

This was same wife who said that Ali started falling asleep at the dinner table after losing to Joe Frazier in 71' this is why i say Ali had brain damage not Parkinson.Parkinsons is a cover story to keep the Greatest legacy alive because in truth if it is brain damage and Frazier said he did it ,would mean that Ali wasn't as unbreakable as he boost he was since the 70's.That he really couldn't take the punches to the head in his 71' fight against Frazier and Frazier could take him punches against him.Frazier died without brain damage Ali was a proud man i understand that but he is still only flesh and bone in the end.

The Davis Miller section of this documentary is extraordinary. His book is excellent - "The Tao of Muhammad Ali." You can go to amazon and read the first chapter and find out what it's like to get in the ring with Ali and get hit by him once or twice and feel your legs buckle - you'll come away with a whole new appreciation of what great fighters do and how they do it. I think Miller's work ranks with the best studies of Ali including the work of Norman Mailer. And that's sayin' somethin'. WTG Davis Miller. WTG Muhammad Ali.
B. Frost, today's a tough day for me -- and you changed that with your comments. "Tao of Ali" is presently being developed into a movie, which I'm very happy about. My latest book, "Approaching Ali," is the best thing I've ever written about my great friend Muhammad. Ali's wife Lonnie read it to him from the first chapter forward in March and April 2016.
And I learnt that when I was fighting Michael Moorer [to become the oldest heavyweight champion in history, and oldest champion at that time.]
Sure I was being hit by shots and he was being hit by a lot of shots, but I remembered in that fight - and the one against Evander Holyfield - that when people depend on you, you just can’t decide I’m going down.
Awesome Big George! Great essay thanks for sharing that man
If Ali wouldn't have been stripped of his title back in his prime time , I don't think there was any chance for foreman and Frazier would even stand as a challenger.

@Philip Gannello just shut up moron ali was way passed his prime when he fought holmes 🙄ali was 38 or sumtin when he faced with holmes u moron byee
@Philip Gannello ASSHOLE Holmes was Ali`s sparring partner damn Jack ASS
@Philip Gannello but still got rocked by Tyson lmao
True
His greatest moment for which he deserves our undying respect was his refusal to serve in the armed forces in 1967.
He's a fucking coward thats what he is! While we have young men and woman dying on battlefields all over the world this coward is a hero yeah right we in the military community know he is nothing more than a grade one coward
@@maccmandagunmanecg97smccau26 --- You are an ignorant neocon cretin. Your IQ must be in the single digits. You think Vietnam was a good idea, asshole? Fuck you and your stupid fucking "military community". Your ignorance is disgusting.
@@maccmandagunmanecg97smccau26 I agree 100% and he got a pass because he was a boxing champion at the time.I bet if it was anyone else Steven Yourke would call him a coward.
Nobody will ever come close to you Ali, no one will inspire us the way you did. RIP #muhammadali
How can you say that when Ali was beaten more than 4 times in the ring and MAYWEATHER is the undefeated boxing champion of the world?
@@rexrexrex67 It's not about the losses
@@rexrexrex67 Ali is much more than those losses. Ali was a special breed, you should never compare Ali with Mayweather. They can never be in the same Class.
Ali was no ordinary man

I'm done.
God bless Muhammad Ali- the greatest.
I miss watching Ali fights .he made u want 2 watch boxing.he made it one big event on TV u did not want miss. And he is the greatest of all time r.i.p.champ
I met Ali while I was in college in Miami 1975. He was the featured speaker on a Sunday at the Temple on 7th Avenue, I think.. Most amazing experience I had in college.
RIP Ali, you are the GREATEST of all time!
The greatest fighter of all times. He is a gift of God. He was a boxer of knowledge and wisdom. He believes and and practise the norms and values that many failed to comprehend. He defeated all his critiques much loved despite his talkative attitude and handsome man who brought an end to the Vietnam war by refusing to be inducted. Muhammad Ali will remain historical as a human being. RIP CHAMP
That daughter definitely inherited his mannerisms, which are ,apparently, just as charming and "pretty" in a woman as they were in him.. love Ali

Thanks Muhammad Ali for bringing so much joy into my life. We will always Love you Champ!!
He never knocked anybody out or called rounds after 1971 when he lost to Frazier.in fact he never knocked anybody down after the BAN! He won all of his fights on points.

When asked who my favorite athlete was, my answer is not Joe Montana, Babe Ruth, or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; my favorite athlete was and always will be Muhammad Ali.
I like the Babe slightly more than Abdul Jabbar and Montana, but Ali is the Champ.

RIP To The Absolute Greatest Boxer that ever lived, I remember when he came to Murray, Kentucky a while ago, he inspired me to get my Black Belt
