Fantastic analysis. Minor quibbles - Kerr did not lose 5 meters of ground being in the 1.5 or 2 path for just that final turn. More like 1-2 meters. Still ran a brave race and took the running to Jakob. Cole did not have the easiest of trips - he was shuffled back early and had to move mid first lap to gain a couple of places of position. He later made a similar move to surge past Hessler and Nguse later in the race. Finally he did have to check mildly 120m out. It should have been enough to cost him the race but he realized all his massive potential on this day. I had tabbed him for bronze. Was clearly on great form and looked great in prelims, but 327 was not expected.

Jakob - 4th fastest time ever. Cole, 7th fastest time ever. Some credit to still young Jakob. Outstanding effort not only by Cole, but all thee to run 3:27s. Brave Jakob ran up front. Truth is, you need a clear field, insane fitness, perfect pacing, seamless acceleration in the final 800m, and a rare portion of grit , self-belief and humility to get 3:26:00. Jakob was all or nothing. I respect that. For him it's not about the medal as much as the the WR.

Exactly. Jakob seemed to realise a 3:28 would not give him victory and he really went for it. Better to go out on your shield than thinking you could have done better. I hope he wins the 5km.

Agree. It’s super obvious. Losses to Kerr now 3 times in a row, Wightman, plus he barely held off Nguse at 1M and won basic dead heats over Cheriyut at 1500 and Kjelka at 3k. The man is best at 2M and beyond. At 5k he appears untouchable and something tells me he will run marathons later and challenge 2 hours. His ability to run 62-64 second laps in his sleep is simply remarkable. 3:53 to close out the 5k? Absurd.

Given Cole Hocker’s splits, I really don’t think there was anyway Jakob (let alone the rest of the field) could’ve won this race outside of running sub 3:27 which is an extremely tall order with no pacers, wave light and after 2 rounds. Hocker was impeded by Jakob just before the home straight. He had to have been in 3:27.0-3:27.2 shape with superior closing ability. Perhaps Jakob could’ve let Cheruiyot or Nuguse take the field out in 56 then take over from there and i think he could’ve gotten on the podium with that strategy, but i still think Hocker (and maybe/probably Kerr) would still have run him down in the final stretch. Spectacular race. That 3:27.65 Olympic Record will probably stand for quite some time.

I wonder what if Cheruiyot hadnt closed the little gap Jakob got during the race, would the outcome been any different.

A jornalist asked Olav Aleksander Bu, researcher and trainer for the triathlete Kristian Blummenfelt about Jakobs 1500 in front. How much did it cost etc.
instead of translating it i just copy it in here from Google translate.
after spending some time inserting the height, weight and shoulder width of Ingebrigtsen into the model, he quickly came up with figures that give clear answers to how much the Norwegian lost due to his tactical choice.
The first thing Bu calculated was the average speed of the race time 3:28.24.
      - The average speed is then 25.92 km/hour. This amounts to 7.2 meters per second.
In air resistance, this amounts to 15.4 Newtons, or 1.6 kilograms of force. In that case, speed variation or position is not taken into account.
But to make it easier for the common man to understand how much air resistance is at that speed, Bu uses the watt term, which is commonly used in bicycles.
      - The air resistance of 26 km/h thus amounts to more than 110 watts, explains Bu.
If you want to know for yourself how much the resistance makes up in effect, you can simply set the resistance on a normal ergometer bicycle to 110 Watt. It will feel good even for well-trained exercisers.
The calculations by Bu and the triathlon gang also gave an answer to how much it pays to lie behind a hare.
      - You reduce air resistance by 70-80 percent by lying behind a hare at 1,500 metres. Or in this case the air resistance will have been reduced from about 110 to just over 40 Watts. That is significant, says the researcher.
Bu has also calculated how much faster Ingebrigtsen could have run if he had done the same race, and used the same amount of power - with a hare in front of him.
It is a bit difficult to assess as we do not have an exact model of Jakob, but it is about two seconds in the 1500 metres.
      - In other words, would Jakob Ingebrigtsen have been very close to the world record of 3:26.00?
      - Yes, you can say that.

@@jkdureyes, I think in a slightly less scientific but still over years proven lactic results from Jakob
If he had run a 56 first lap it would have not hurt him at all then followed by like a 55.5 and then wind it up for the last 800
Like he can pretty much run 56s for 2k so I don’t understand why and aerobic athletes runs the first 400 in anerobic capacitys (which he sucks at)
