There are lips you can buy from a paint shop to pour more cleanly. They are made to fit a 4 liter bucket and snap into the rim.

Trevor from Motion Auto just uses some masking tape and tapes in a v. It pours mint.

i've seen people use hypodermic needles to precisely flood small details like on those caps with paint.
Paint them black first then paint a potato silver and press the cap on the potato. You need a LOT of silver so it lays flat, but it works.

Hi Jeff, I have the same car, same color and same wheel rash. Like you I am slowly tidying up stuff on " Hilda" as I have time and money. So thanks for the tips and DIY videos. waiting for the bumper cover to come back to me right now as it looked like Stevie Wonder had learned to drive in my car. :) while I had the bumper cover off move the condensers and deep cleaned the Rads and am now waiting for new radiator fans to arrive to replace them while I have the front end apart. Keep the 996 videos coming
I use the index card method when I plasti dip wheels. Also when I paint center caps like that a get a sheet of poster board and paint me an area and use it to stamp the area if it is raised. Both work like a champ.
i saw someone use JB WELD on gutter rash, might not chip off by the fitting of tyres like body filler might. they finished up looking very nice, and you've once again inspired Me to redo My silver wheels rather than pay someone.
Super job! Here in the UK i would only entertain powder=coating my wheels. I did this with some scabby used BBS alloys i picked up for my golf. They are as new. Altogether i saved £700 on getting new ones.
While doing my wheels I've found that JB Weld or some other type of high-metal content epoxy works best for deep gashes on wheels. A bit of a pain to sand smooth but lot stronger than body filler. Great video Jeff. Currently binge watching old unwatched videos of yours. Cheers from Puerto Rico.

Painting raised edges like a badge works well if you paint the black first then silver, then get a sanding block to take the raised edges back to black. Then infill using your favourite method
Jeff a quick cure for paint spills when you need a small amount when Mrs Jeff is out go grab a Ladle, I have had one in my paint kit for 30 years now and it was a pro who told me to grab one for small amounts as it stops mess but still gets enough out of the big cans.

I've done a lot of 15 & 16 inch 4X4 rim repaints using a masking ring I made out of a long strip of .5 mm thick gal sheet and a cut up worm drive hose clip. It's adjustable and clips over the lip of the rim and sits against the face of the tyre. There is only one so I have to move it between rims as I paint, but it works fine.
Put the lid back on the tin of paint. Punch two holes in the lid, at opposite sides of each other, with a screw driver. Make one bigger than the other and pour! When finished wipe the paint off and use your best sticky masking tape to cover the holes. When you use it again take off the tape. Throw it away and use fresh tape to seal the holes. If you don't trust the tape get another lid when you buy the paint and swap the lids :)
Been doing that for years and never had any paint "go off". I worked in industrial paint colour matching and it became the norm after I left to store unused paint. Simples.

Jeff, although this won't stop paint spilling, a useful tip for keeping paint cans clean is to knock a hole with a screw driver into the lower recessed part of the can's sealing lip where the paint pools after you pour it. This way the paint drains back into the tin if you prop it up at a bit of an angle with the lid resting on top to keep crud out while it drains. The lid will still seal on the two horizontal edges.
Its easy to stop paint spills with a simple plastic pouring aid available from Bunnings
Or use some form of cup to transfer with.

I'd be cool if you could get center caps with your Home Built by Jeff logo on them. I just redid some center caps myself. I just painted them silver and clear coated them. After they dried for a day, I just sprayed them with 1K gloss black paint from a can, waited 30 seconds, and carefully wiped the excess with paint prep on a rag leaving just the black on the recesses. I waited for them to dry and added a quite heavy clear coat on top. Not OEM for sure but turned out quite nice actually. My first go at it, I did try your method but I don't have great dexterity that way. LOL. Great video!

There is a paint pourer you can get that clips into the rim of a 4lt tin. I got mine from my local paint supplies.

Wheels look great. I would try a mascara brush. You know a little foam one. After painting the cap all black you dip it in the silver paint, press off the extra and dab the raised areas in silver.
I saw somewhere on line a guy was painting fine lines on a badge and he used a tiny needle and syringe... Almost a diabetic needle.. The finer the better.. Fill the syringe with paint and kind of paint with the syringe.. If the paint is thinned out properly it will just fill up to the edges.. If that makes any sense
There are tools called "fine line painting pens" for detail work like this - also useful for touching up rock chips on the hood/bonnet. They are like a little cup with a needle point on a handle.
I use a kitchen scoop to move the paint from a full tin, and where small quantities required, almost disposable.
Tip some scotch bright pads cut into circles bolted together can be used in a drill to clean and scuff rims for painting.
You can buy pre made scotch bright attachments for a few dollars but when you need them the shop may be out etc etc.

Mask the outer edge of the Porsche badge in the caps after painting a few coats of silver, paint black with 2 coats. Unmask after an hour. Allow it to harden for a few days, re-mask and sand back to silver leaving the low regions black. Clear coat.
Jeff - use tape in a v shape on the can to pour more cleanly. Not perfect but it works when that full for sure.
When the paint Tin is new, you can use the ruler to fill the plastic container. Simply hold the plastic container over the tin at a slight angle and dip the ruler into the paint then slide the ruler along the edge of the plastic container opening. It’s fills quite quick.
Thats how I do it unless I'm going to use the full tin then ill just punch 2 holes with a screwdriver
For the embossed logo, you could try spraying enamel based black paint and wipe off the excessive paint with enamel thinner which would not affect the lacquer based color, than spray clear paint (urethane) to finish off.
We've been using something like the FoamPRO 61-5 for about 20 years to pour paint. Wouldn't paint without them.
Couple boxes of poker cards stuck around the rim works great to avoid painting tires. Aha just after i wrote this Jeff says it. Thats how i do it

Nice work! I want to do the GT3 wheels which are BBS however they are individual nuts on each spoke so could be a challenge.
Are they actually 3 piece wheels? You may be able to disassemble them.

Looks a lot better. Have you used those clip on lips 👄 to the gallon? I dislike painting quite a bit, but the clip on lip makes pouring quite easy.
For the embossing you need to use Gravolaque or similar specialized paint to fill in the cavity. Normally you pour in the lacquer and wipe the surplus of and that leave the remain in the embossing. Otherwise keep the silver. Does the body filler last? Normally I repair with Alu-filler instead.
Tip save the lids off old tins and put pouring holes in them. A large one and a small one that you can cap off with your finger to slow the pour.
Some people drive a short screw with a roofing cap into the lid and use it like a removable cap.

I find that a small cup allows me to dip into the larger can a few times until the proper amount is achieved .. Then throw it out without a huge mess.. Pop can cut down, plastic water jug cut down, small paper milk cut down, etc..
I got different sized stainless steel ladles for moving paint and other thing out of their cans.

I use small clear drink cups from woollies etc and just pail it out of tin. I put water in a cup and weight it in 50 mls/50 gram increments or what ever, then I transfer the marks from one cup to a the rest with a marker stick. Then I have 50 cheap measured disposable cups. You can also make up a gauging stick with the same method with some cut always and just stick it in the cup to measure the mls.
Not sure about the Scotch-brite on the primer Jeff, I always assumed it leaves 'nano-film' of the polymer it's made of (nylon or polypropylene?) on the surface. I'd have gone with fine (1500) wet/dry and a wipe with pre-paint.

Yeah me too. Not convinced they will survive long. My repairer welds and lathes the rims.
You can use a turkey baster to not make a mess, kinda slow but no mess or wasted paint.
Simple way. Buy some cheap metal soup ladles and bend the arm so u can dip into the tin and remove paint. Then tip into your mixing container. If you the hang the ladle over the tin most remaining paint will go back in the tin. Wipe ladle clean for next time.
best way to mask a rubber tire for paint is to coat it with silicone spray, or vaseline, when paint is dried just pressure wwash the paint off rubber
Fresh centre caps off ebay or aliexpress, or just stick on logos will sort them easy

LOL!!!! Just deflate ALL of the air from the tire. Use tire iron or large flat driver and insert it under the lip. Lay the "Unstickable" Blue tape (Preferably a wider blue tape). You can figure the rest out.
Are the Porsche logos embossed in the caps? Maybe you could paint the whole cap black over the silver, and then sand back to the silver on the face?
The logos are debossed, and it would be very difficult to sand off the black evenly, but maybe after I have cleared it... hmm. I may give it a go.
Bunnings sells paint pouring lips for paint tins that fit tins 2L-10L and they're cheap as chips...
The Scotch brite is easier to use to give the key than wet&dry.
Kerosene seems to work on road tar and is easy on painted surfaces. .

I would have repaired the wheel using metal instead of body filler. Is body filler solid enough also for wheels?
Unless it’s flexible fibre reinforced body filler it will probably crack off.
Liquid metal is a better choice if you don’t want to weld the curb rash.
Welding forged alloy and or magnesium wheels is risky.
Cast and roll formed should be ok if too much heat is avoided and the whole rim is pre heated and cooled very slowly after.
What if you scoop out the paint with a cup rather than spilling it all over the place trying to pour it out of the tin

Washi tape which is a rice paper tape which is designed to stick to damp surfaces rubber and alike

To mask a tire in a hurry grab a stick of butter and rub it around the area to be painted, lay it on thick then sprinkle some flour over the buttered area blow it off then carefully clean the surface to be painted of any butter that may have contaminated it.
After paint has dried enough edge around the border with a sharp implement to cut the overspray then clean the tyre with a stiff brush.
The butter keeps the paint from sticking to the rubber the flour helps keep the butter from washing off while spraying.
How long do you bake it?

The guys at Motorhead made a lip out of masking tape when they poured from a big tin. I can't remember which episode, but it was in the last week.
You Can put tape in a V shape on the paint Can, so you have a lip to poor paint out on.. hope you understand 🤪
Why don't you paint the center caps all black and then sand them back until you can see the silver underneath again?
This is how the painter who did my centercaps did it. Worked a charm.

any reason you decided to use body filler instead of welding aluminum onto the wheels then sanding down to shape? I feel like the filler will just chip off as soon as the tire shop goes to put the tires on.
There is very little filler and welding cast aluminium you need to be aware of warping and also making the area more brittle, which is far more dangerous.
8:25 use a "paint can spout" to pour paint from the can, it looks like a visor from a baseball cap
Why not touch up the bigger gashes with the TIG since you are repainting them anyways?
best AND cheapest way to prevent paint from going all over the place. use a small paper coffee cup and gloves. use the cup to transfer the paint. ^________^
Jeff, there's a pour spout that fits on the lip of the gallon can to remedy the spilling. As far as the center caps go, just mask off around the shield and air brush it black or dark gray!
Just need something super adhesive like duct tape for masking.

if its positive detail you paint a hard surface with a generous amount of black and then press the centre onto that surface

Dude spray the whole wheel cap black then sand disk and polish. The machined outlines remain painted fully as they are resessed

Bondo might not survive, I would have used 2 parts epoxy charged with aluminium instead like Loctite 3479B.

The little scuffs on the rim liquid metal is harder. I’ve seen people fix holes in Bike GB case after slinging it down the rd.

Repainting wheels is an epic waste of time. Media blasting and powder coating costs around $60-70 per wheel and gives you a much more durable finish than any paint ;)
