  • We meet the fascinating NCAA and U.S. Amateur champion, Bryson DeChambeau, a man who has rejected golfing convention to devise a unique set of clubs that could potentially revolutionise the game. Here Bryson discusses his one-plane swing and the single-length iron set concept that he believes could make the game a lot easier for beginner players

    While I am not a big proponent of the single axis swing I think single length clubs may have some merit. His knowledge about "The G.O.L.F. machine" by Kelley is pretty impressive. I read that book 20 years ago and it took me a while to figure out what it was telling me about the swing. Interesting interview.

    I am new to golf and enjoying the game tremendously. As soon as I swung the 4 iron, I wandered why its much harder to hit than the 7 iron. To me, as a complete novice, having one length shaft for all irons was the answer. So I searched the Internet and guess what, I found cobra's one length irons! Never looked back since and enjoying the clubs. So this guy obviously was a pioneer but I think most experienced golfers just don't bother to think outside the known traditions of golf. Good on this player, I hope he will transform the game of golf.

    The single plane swing is more efficient than the traditional swing. In order to execute this, the shaft should be pointing through the middle of your back at address. This will help your hands return to the same position at impact, as they were at address. Many golfers have low hands at address but at impact their hands are significantly higher. Make your life easier and use the SINGLE PLANE BABY.

    The point he is now advocating is does NOT use feel to impart the force of the hit. Not sure , but guess it just mechanics. The book refered to was written by Homer Kelly RIP, quite a story there. He worked with then young champ Bobby Clampett and it basically destroyed his swing. When Bobby sued him it for making too mechanical ! I think this is an elaboration of that we have different clubs (length, lie, loft etc.) and use ONE swing.

Is anyone else old enough to remember that in the early 90's there was a set of clubs by one of the manufacturers, I'm thinking Powerbilt, that had a set that were all 6 iron length?. Does anyone remember who made it? I always wanted to try it but couldn't afford them back then.

    I still don't really understand how he gets consistent gaps with all club lengths the same with only 4 degrees between clubs. Obviously he doesn't generate as much club head speed with his longer irons as he would if they were standard length.

    • @rickyparker1073
      @rickyparker1073 8 лет назад +4

      All of the irons are the same weight. The loft determines the gaps. In a standard set the weight decreases the lower the club. This is how he counters the differences.

    Ha Ha. The manufacturers are going to love this. Stagnated by regulations they now have a new fad to take to market

    • @SearchBucket2
      @SearchBucket2 8 лет назад +3

      *****
      No, it's a fad ...
      "Science" has thrown all sorts of ideas at us through the years from low-profile irons, square-headed drivers, over-size clubs and all manner of putter designs.
      The problem is akin to fitting a carpet into a room that's too large. Get one part sorted and a buckle turns up somewhere else. For instance, make the "sweet spot" bigger and you create more aerodynamic drag, a more eccentric centre of gravity and more "shaft droop".
      Unless Bryson's irons are goose-necked forward, the centre of gravity will trail the shaft more and more with increasing loft. This may be small but any serious golfer will notice once the club is in motion (especially at the transition) and dynamic loads, especially torque, become magnified. The human nervous system is very good at honing in on small differences if a task is repeated over and over. Eventually those differences feel large.
      The distance differential between Byson's irons will necessarily be less when using equal length shafts; inescapable science, unless he varies his swing speed, so again the carpet analogy applies. Given the same swing speed, his less lofted clubs will go shorter than standard and his higher lofted clubs longer because the arc is the same.
      In contrast, the varied lengths of standard clubs build-in different club-head speed for the same effort. If Bryson swings harder or more gently he can compensate, but that defeats the "science" of having everything "the same", doesn't it?
      Bryson is a big man; he can compensate for loss of distance on his less lofted clubs as he has enough power to put them at a reasonable distance in the first place.
      May I remind you he has a least TWO distinct swing planes, the one he uses for irons and the one he uses for woods. It might be argued that alternating between two distinct planes is worse than playing a range of progressively flattening ones? I also notice that when he plays from sand he is conventional.
      Bryson has a good analytical brain and I'm sure he wouldn't argue with anything I've put down here. That skill, his course management and his competitive ability is what really makes him a good golfer, not his equipment, and if he does feel he gets an "edge" from it he will, even if it might only be psychological? Just as players do when the change their putter.
      When you've seen as much new golf science consigned to the bin as I have and think it through you too will realise it's a fad. Besides, golfers are eternally obsessed with maximising distance, and losing that by a system of same length clubs is not going to appeal to many, but most of all, manufacturers NEED to keep selling you new equipment to survive, and the only way they can do that is to keep convincing you that what you have is inferior in some way .
      :-)

    I solved the swing with new science. If you do not understand how to swing with different length clubs logically then you don't understand the golf swing. By default you are clueless as to hit off any angle slope other than perfect flat. Every swing on the golf course is a different swing. Every change in slope means every trajectory is different. If the ball is above you or below, you have to swing around or down making each swing different by changing ratios of everything. The golfing machine is based off false premises. If the earth was flat & you feet were bolted to the ground 7 the ball position didn't move it

    You can take this one step further by applying the BioMatch method of club matching. You will then have the same swing for your entire set of clubs, without altering the length of your clubs. His swing is so ugly that it offends me. However, he refrains from using "was like" and uses "said" or "thought" instead. How utterly refreshing. The man can speak and does not sound like a teenager in Sherman Oaks circa 1985. He uses one "I was like" but that's progress.
