Like _Luck be a Landlord's_ use of slot machine as a primary game mechanic, I'm always a little bit leery of the use of traditional gambling mechanics as the basis for gameplay. I'm not sure poker is any worse than any other form of addicting mechanics in games, but for me at least, it _feels_ slightly more troublesome even without the devastating effects of losing actual money. This isn't to say the game can't be brilliantly executed and worthwhile of someone's time, rather a recognition that it's not for me and, should anyone be interested, why that may be.
Is it Jon or John? In either case, I really appreciate your production value and thoughtful commentary. As other have already said, terrific work. Channel growth seems inevitable if you continue on this trajectory.

It's John :) I agree that there's something ever so slightly icky about gambling stuff. I'm glad that Balatro keeps it clean in terms of monetisation-there's nothing sketchy or extra to buy once you're in. But there is a slight gambling game aura there, for sure.

a quibble: eights full of queens should score something like 350, each hand has a base amount of chips that the cards add to

Great video, thanks for sharing your thoughts! Wondering if Balatro is a good brain training game or not, I mean does it challenge you to think tactical or strategically so to optimize your hand? Do you learn as much as you play or the amount of variety makes no sense to master it in some way? Best

Thanks! I think there are really endless builds you can go for that are different every time based on the jokers you pull and the hands you power up. There's definitely a lot of learning, experimentation, and strategy - I think the game ultimately rewards you for understanding its systems rather than sticking to stuff that's worked for you before!
