It can be hard to get any concessions when you're a person with autism who passes as "normal". You can even say the words "I HAVE AUTISM" and theyll still see everything you do from the normal lens because you're not acting in a way that is quite so different. Instead of seeing you have issues processing certain things, they'll think you're stupid. Instead of understanding that your brain has to work overtime to complete simple tasks, and thus you may need more breaks, they'll think you're lazy.

I'm autistic. If I was to die young, I believe it would be from these reasons: diabetes/heart problems/starvation and associated problems due to ARFID/ non-specified eating disorder, suicide, lack of general care (not drinking enough water etc) or having other health problems I face passed off as nothing because doctors don't seem to trust my own opinions of myself. But I think suicide is the biggest risk, not just for me, but for most autistic people. Really, it is no wonder we want to die. The world isn't built for us at all, there are no accommodations, and it feels like we fail miserably at everything we do. I hope things change soon for our community.

Nah you don't fail at everything people on the spectrum all have their individual talents. Why it might seem your failing people that don't like you aren't going to acknowledge your gifts what comes naturally to you they will ignore brush it off try to play it down while over dramatizing any flaw even if it so small where your still better than most of them they will only single your mistakes out while ignoring same mistakes on NT. Example I noticed this down talking some quickly over talking going on how what I said was no big deal. The funny thing it wasn't all I said was I'm average at math when some other girl was struggling so I suggested working to get her on it could help. And randomly you get that person jumping assuming I think I'm special assuming like I said I was great at it. I was comfortable enough to be able to help someone that didn't get it but never claim to be anything special just average they are so quick to attack put you down but from that example I realized they aren't really paying attention enough to know if your good or bad at something they mostly ignore and assume any mistakes came from you.

Im an Autistic guy from Switzerland, and even nowadays, we are around 5 years behind other countries in this Autism thing.
As a child i got bullied, mentally and physically beaten, even my parents did that.....I nearly always told the truth, but no one was and is (Its the same today), believing me.....thats a reason why i got so less positive things from other people and got frustrated. As a child, in the age of 6 to 9, I was suicidal and thought many times about this, but no one believed me here too.....I was also a very sick child, many middle ear infections, kidney inflammations, jaundice, meningithis......
Meanwhile im 42 and can deal with it. A doctor tested my blood a few monts ago and told me, that my immune system is nearly perfect and not many people have this. I get barely a cold today, it might be due to these critical illnesses i had and survived as a child. I also think, that there is barely anything new to learn for me on this planet and I don´t care if i live or die. When I am starting something new, I see many details, then i put these details together and understand the system pretty fast and from then on it bores me out and i search something new.
Even we are so many years behind here, im glad to live in Switzerland and can count on the support of our social systems like welfare office and disability insurance, also from social workers here if needed. I also withdrawed from many things, that gives me the time and motivation to chase my special interests. I am not surprised that many Autistics die young, can be depression, frustration, getting sick because of this, suicidal, getting dropped out and living on the streets, etc.

I’m 42 as well, from the US. So many of the same issues you’ve mentioned. I was never diagnosed, but hearing from adults who have dealt with almost the same terror growing up, I finally see context for my own life.
It’s odd realizing how much getting bullied in grade school affected me throughout my life. Here I thought I didn’t have any “real trauma” as a kid hahaha. I’m far more sensitive than even I realized.
I won’t likely seek much treatment though, all they seem to want to do is label you and feed you meds. I’ve had too many terrors with our healthcare system anyway and don’t trust them. Especially seeing as how autistic people so often see through the lies & bullshit we’re all fed; we’re dangerous to them.

What we need is the education of neurotypicals and the same acceptance that other people with disabilities get. Stop bullying and ostracizing people with autism. It's insane how we're treated just for thinking and processing differently. Treatment should be mandatory education of neurotypicals at work and schools and LSD for autistic individuals. Antidepressants don't work . . .they only numb me and make neurotypicals more comfortable. They don't help me. Since weed is legal and you feel less in control on that, why isn't LSD legal? It's much better and you feel more in control. I guess because the studies out say it help autistic people, and most people don't care about helping us.

I don't think it's a good idea to erase "neurodiversity" by saying "we're all on a spectrum", because we're not. That's why we struggle so much. The world really is designed for neurotypicals and people saying "we're all on the spectrum" is negating all that struggle and taking away from those with autism who aren't even getting the help we need as it is. I think it's a bad idea. However, girls should be assessed the same as boys. If I was a boy, I'd have been diagnosed when I was 5 years old, not 35.

Girls when they're young have all the same symptoms as boys. I had selective mutism, wrote on walls, didn't understand strange, unwritten rules and why people were mean to me (including adults when I broke these unspoken "rules" no one told me), and I cried a lot/ felt alone and was bullied. But doctors want to cover their butts by saying we "mask" more. We do eventually, because we don't get help and diagnosed when we're young. It's the bias healthcare has against women / girls thinking we are hypochondriacs and the acceptance of boys behaving badly (girls get punished more) that caused us to "mask". If boys were told they can't behave that way and punished nearly as much, they would also "mask"

"Wrote on walls" Is that an autistic thing? I am autistic and I did that, and got punished for it. As a dude, who learned to mask early and got diagnosed as an adult, I can understand the gender bias, from that point of view, when boys act like girls there are some doubts about autism but I am still certain that it's easier for society to "look for" autism in boys. But in my case it was mostly my parents who didn't know or cared to know about this autist because they themselves managed to make a life despite some traits (and therefore don't reach results for a diagnose), but I think they are just stigmatized like society at large. The shame is to much for them and because of that I got problems since I have to do all the self advocacy (which is mostly too hard). That's from a people pleasing mother who thought I could do whatever I wanted, which meant realizing her dreams of having a successful child she could brag about. Now she can't brag since I don't work, but I think she is starting to see how dumb she was, yet still she can't break out of the old character since it is all she knows. She might even lie about what I do to avoid uncomfort (a recent thought I got).
And my god, how many times did I get yelled at from teachers and alike because of doing stuff I didn't know was wrong. There might even have been peers who made me do some stuff since I was easily manipulated. I got bullied by those who I thought were my friends, not all the time, but I didn't understand it then, just felt uneased and in danger. I couldn't understand why some people changed their behaviour around certain other people. It was unpleasant. But I too was not good to some people.

We really need nothing less than self-governance and self-representation. NTs don't have a personal interest in our well-being, and they benefit most from systems that have acceptable losses, margins and edge cases. We need to universally screen people for neurodivergence. We need a total overhaul of our employment system. We need ND schools, doctors, police, juries, etc. I'm one of the "lucky ones:" my special interest in programming, however finding a job in the tech industry is absolutely f'd up. When I do have a tech job... well, I've logged about 20k hours at the keyboard in my life (conservative estimate). I'm also lucky in that I don't deal with NTs on a daily basis, and I avoid it if I can, because it's simply unproductive/inefficient: other NDs understand me just fine, AI models do okay, even my dog does okay, but NTs underperform when it comes to verbal comprehension.

My boss here in the USA accused me of being a thief because I thought I could take home tips if I report them as a Busser. He then fired me even know I didn't end up taking any tips because my coworker explained I wasn't allowed to. So now I'm out of a job again and this is the 14th job I've lost from misunderstanding or people thinking I'm to slow 🦥 etc. I just want a normal life and to get ahead. If I was not going to be getting social security disability I would be homeless and my mental health I bet would be even worse.

CORTISOL FROM STRESS CANNOT BE UNDERSTATED AS A DRIVING FACTOR in physical issues for people on the spectrum.
It is great in small doses but does horrible systemic damage in long-term exposure..to virtually all tissues of the body.
After having the typical high-functioning autistic existence (anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, in survival mode), I spent my 30s in and out of a hospital bed.. 21 operations, several of which were touch & go on whether I would survive. I was a single undiagnosed autistic mother of an autistic son, so I HAD to stay alive. You see, I was very ill and had difficulty breathing.. I would get breathless walking from my car into the office. f I had a funny color and looked swollen. I was convinced I would not live to see my 40th birthday. The medical gaslighting I experienced (as well as a surgeon who lost his license) resulted in me losing trust in physicians altogether. I had all the outward symptoms of Cushing's Disease (ultra high cortisol, rapid unexplainable weight gain even on 1000 cal/day), probably a result of that crippling stress we autistics live under, which means I couldn't heal. I had one small, superficial operation which snowballed. My high cortisol levels interfered with healing, resulting in a temporary ileostomy that herniated, gangretized, and nearly killed me. The ileostomy being a disaster, I had a surgeon reverse it and resect my intestines. Following were surgical hernias which became incarcerated, resulting in me losing feet of upper and lower intestine, and having half a dozen very close brushes with death.
Add Hashimoto's, which went undiagnosed, ran its course, and completely destroyed my thyroid (it's actually missing now, without having been surgically removed or irradiated).
I developed a large sac of water in my chest cavity at 40 (which they mis-diagnosed as congestive heart failure, then again misdiagnosed as sleep apnea..hello... grasping at straws and gross incompetence), which I revealed was a matter of having no thyroid, potassium or magnesium in my blood. I ran my own tests, treated myself and saved my own life. A couple years later I finally received my autism diagnosis as part of my son's. He had avoided detection because his undiagnosed mom had unwittingly taught him how to mask (oops).
After much research about why I felt so sickly for so long, I discovered there is a measurable population of autistic people , as well as people with episodic/cyclical Cushing's Disease, whose mitochondria cannot metabolize carbohydrates correctly. Carbs make them feel ill and cause them to pack on weight in a very specific way -- even on a restricted diet. I tried the medical ketogenic diet (sure that I would never be able to stand it) and two weeks later I had to stop on the side of the road and cry. Not from despair but rather nostalgia. An overwhelming feeling of wellness (just not feeling horrible) came over me that I hadn't felt since I was 7 years old. At that moment I transitioned from "trying not to die" to pursuing wellness. I have dropped 85 pounds on keto, and my more troublesome ADHD & autism features have lessened dramatically as the result of a relentless pursuit of answers. It became my area of special interest for nearly 20 years!
The other critical factor is suicide. Many of us do not have the financial resources for therapy/counseling if we could actually find someone familiar enough with autism to be beneficial. I learned for myself that therapists/counselors who do not understand autism actually do more damage than good (gaslighting). The most beneficial thing I've been able to do for myself for my emotional well-being was to join a local Celebrate Recovery group (which is FREE and run by volunteers who have already found healing through the program). Their structure ensures that it's safe. Everyone is respected, and everyone has their own hurts, hang-ups, and habits. Nobody there will try to fix you, nobody gets interrupted, and everyone gets equal time. They are there to facilitate you in finding your own answers and insights, grieving past hurts, uncovering the driving forces behind your hangups, and replacing your damaging habits with healthier ones. I've experienced such profound healing and a sense of peace that I now serve on the leadership team and sponsor other women as they pursue their own healing. Ha ha... Me, a "dyed in the wool" introvert! I'm plugged into a social group of mostly neurotypicals and am accepted and sometimes even admired (all while stemming!). Who knew?!? My suicidal ideations, which began at 11, have ceased finally. I have come to terms with my late diagnosis, the inadvertent gaslighting by family, friends and physicians, and have learned to speak my truth in confidence. I have shared my testimony to hundreds, in hopes that, since so many of us go undiagnosed, that perhaps someone else can find their own answers and find hope.
I feel like I've been released from prison. My cortisol levels dropped so profoundly (a direct result of the coping tools I learned in CR) and my health turned around so profoundly, that my last intestinal operation 7 years ago (which was open-cavity, being filleted like a fish) was so seamless and uneventful that I was off painkillers the next day, and was back to work the following Monday. The normal healing time is 6-8 weeks! My own experience is the only proof I need of how much difference stress/cortisol makes in my own physical health.
Society tends to perceive us as disposables/write-offs, since we do not add to the economy to the degree that neurotypical folks do. That is why it is important that we make our voices heard (self and community advocacy). I feel led to go back to school to help other autistics find their own health answers and add to their years in whatever way they can. In the meantime, one of the most helpful tools I've found is this great publication I've shared with my allergist, primary care physician, and any other health professional willing to read it:
nationalautismassociation.org/docs/comorbidities.pdf This is from 2014. If there is an updated version, I have been unable to find it but would appreciate someone sharing it.
    Blessings!

I have also. In the past I've been medicated for this, which fortunately works reasonably well on me.
However, you have to understand that the entire mainstream culture is based around a different and rather silly thing: humans have brains that can track relationships with about 140-150 others and are hard-wired to try to track their social status compared to that of their fellows. Obviously humans live in far greater numbers than this, so what seems to have happened is that much of modern society is designed to be a proxy for social status.
Nice car, fashionable clothes, hanging around with the "in crowd"? All things that are considered to be social status trackers, but which actually are not. Heck the entire financial system is designed to be slightly dishonest and to permit lying about status levels. Mainstream culture is therefore loads of people lying some of the time about their status to others who are trying to do the same, and all of them doing all of this subconsciously because they're hardwired to do it.
And then there's us autistics, not so hardwired and looking upon it, it is all so very, very confusing...

Keto diet seems to improve energy supply and usage in the suffering brain. Mitochondria in many cells seem to become injured by certain ingredients in foods, e.g. fructose, PUFAs, sugar, agrochemical residues, plant lectins that make intestinal linings porous. The high price of meat is a big discouragement. Our digestive systems are in the proportions of carnivore, with minor starch and plant contribution. Antibiotics also damage the intestinal flora, which has a huge impact on mental landscape/climate.

1980-1990s people thought autism was a boys thing so I just got palmed off as special education needs which annoyed me so much and yes I got bullied so much for that much worse throughout secondary school which I hated and thought about suicide so much and was ignored and threatened with anti depressants and being locked up in a padded room.

When medical care sucked for fomen, because they didnt thought there is any big consideration in how womens bodies could work different, which obviously sucked, and was a worse healthcare.
That is similar. Like is there any destigmatisation that, maybe ther eshould be considerations that doctors learn to aproack people different, like many neurotypical people exist and, that yeah makes healthcare works by ignoring a pretty needed aproach, by medicine, that itrs different and dammit do research and take it serious, like eventually was to woimens medicine factors.

🤔When the personality or neuro diversity is noticed and becomes problematic to handle, it is likely when serious health issues get into the picture or/and when the IQ is lower. 🤔Personality differences, neuro diversity should be valued and respected. However, they frequently are not. The ability to mask and handling of differences is more cleverly managed it seems by those with higher iQ . 🤔It may be that personality traits are linked to health differences. There may be, and seems to be, susceptibility to gut and inflammatory factors, which could increase issues and vulnerabilities. The inflammatory factors are going to make issues more extreme and harder to handle or manage. (My opinion is based on observation. It seems formal studies are suggesting the same. More data and research needed. In the meanwhile it would help to respect, value, each other while considering approach strategies.)

If you are not suffering from some of these conditions in your 40s or 50s you might be improperly diagnosed because this is another symptom , fact about people with autism . Gastro intestinal problems emerged for me in 2nd grade and was considered very unusual , I was autistic before anyone high functioning with autism was even identified as autistic. I was a problem child prone to meltdowns, tantrums , self loathing and stomach aches. Autism is a popular self diagnosis but not always accurate and people who are not autistic are causing the facts and hallmarks of Autism like life expectancy that are of immediate concern for me which is the fact we only live on average to age 58.

It does cause mental health like symptoms such as depression and anxiety. 80% of autistic people struggle with anxiety.
Why would you go around calling people dummy when you've probably heard that your whole life? It's called constructive discussion.

How was he diagnosed ? He is too old to ever have been diagnosed.. This is fact and critical to people with autism like me who have health issues that will end my life. Thank god for this being uncovered, - it has been true for years but not diagnosed or recognized until the 1990s. People like you.can.stop real important research.from being done which.is again the way most people disregard our lives and experiences . Ignorance is no excuse for being.so.irresponsible. Don't dismiss real.autusm because you know 1 person who.msy or may not be autistic.
