Amazing how every version of In C sounds like every other -- and sounds different than every other. A brilliant concept that has stood the test of time.
the best thing about "In C" is that it says nothing whatsoever about what instruments should be used, how many musicians there should be in the group, or how many times each section should be repeated; the only requirements are that one part keeps time for all the others, and that everyone should try and keep up with each other, not going too far ahead or lagging too far behind and as far as interpretations go, this one is fantastic!
Interesting comment, and it seems Steve Reich was the one who suggested the idea of time to Terry Riley, who initially had thought of a predetermined tempo/bpm. This way, the performance always seems more organic and fluid, less rigid I guess. See Wikipedia: "As detailed in some editions of the score, it is customary for one musician ("traditionally... a beautiful girl," Riley notes in the score) to play the note C in repeated eighth notes, typically on a piano or pitched-percussion instrument (e.g. marimba). This functions as a metronome and is referred to as "The Pulse". Steve Reich introduced the idea of a rhythmic pulse to Riley, who accepted it, thus radically altering the original composition by Riley which had no pre-determined rhythm."
Clearly you're not speechless enough to leave a comment. which is, you know, the exact opposite of being speechless. But either way, yes, this version is spectacular
for me, i have always preferred Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians" to 'In C'. this version, however, has leveled the playing field. what a fantastic rendition.
LOVE love this wsay back in the 80's I first heard Terry Riley's version on organ but this is the future and the past incarnate, wow. I found my first you tube thing to play to as a drummer......coming soon...wow. This could be a loop for life.....
First heard "In C" back in 1970 or 71 on the Columbia recording and was blow away. It was my, and the world's, introduction to minimalism in music. This recording brings back that wonder and excitement.
I saw Terry Riley's version live in Madison Wisconsin on the 90s. I love love love this music! To hear it in the Mali "voice" makes me appreciate it all the more. Might be better than the original. The beautiful warmth of the Mali players!
There's a big amount of shots on the video and that's the key to it's engagement, but due to the lenght of the music it would've been great to have, let's say 3 times more shots from Mali and the recording, since it turns very monotonus after few minutes. In any case the motion picture goes along great with the music. Good job.
Très belle adaptation et interprétation. Je la préfère de loin à celle de Steve Reich, ça montre que l'oeuvre de Terry Riley avait déjà des influences africaines. A quand une version indienne ? avec tabla et sitares ...
There is no score, that's the thing with In C. It's just a set of intructions. Yes, they do add a few things (such as vocals). But what's striking is how this is immediately identifiable as In C even if filtered through an African prism.
they do take liberties, there is some ad lib throughout, which is not suggested in the score. Though it is growing on me, fits with the african spirit of improvisation.@@guscairns1
@@guscairns1 Yes, there's a score ;) one page long with 53 motifs preceded by 2 pages of performing directions ^^ I guess he wanted to say they took some liberties with the system to navigate the motifs and/or additional motifs...
the "annoying" violin is one of those (traditional) instruments getting out a little bit from the temepered tuning. a process that is the basis of Riley's music...let's open our ears trying to welcome "other" sounds too, please..;-)
Transformational. Jubilant. Intoxicating
It's amazing how different In C can sound with different instrumentation. This is utterly gorgeous.

i realize Im pretty randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to watch newly released tv shows online?
@Alvin Tyler thanks, I went there and it seems like a nice service :) I really appreciate it!!
@Karsyn Anders Glad I could help =)

Terry Riley is a clever composer :)

I am astonished at how good this is. True to Riley's original source material, yet a completely fresh and original concept. A triumph.
Wow. What an amazing take on Riley's vision. It sticks to the original spirit and yet sounds completely renewed. I'm speechless.
Clearly you're not speechless enough to leave a comment. which is, you know, the exact opposite of being speechless.

Just a manner of speaking, of course :-)
Stunningly beautiful and exotic. I did not want this dream to end!
I started dancing and also crying. Best version ever.

beautiful country, beautiful people, beautiful music, beautiful culture
Thank you Terry Riley; the work is an affirmation that I found on the front page of the on-line New York Times that was badly needed.
Wow! This takes the original to such a beautiful new height
Beautiful. The best realisation I've heard of In C. I love the harp coming in at 7:41
A kora, rather than a harp, I suspect :-)

Sure, but all versions of the same idea, like the Malagasy Valiha. Probably like calling a lute a guitar though!
Love this interpretation. The instruments seem so right.
I never want this to end
They had a project, LaMonte Young and others, they played music 24 hours a day, in turns...
how could anyone Not want to go to Africa.
I love this Mali version much much more than the orchestra version....

What An Absolute Jam.
This is one of my favorite 'albums' of 2015 so far, hands down.
Oh, it's over?! That was the quickest 40 minutes of my life.
Wonderful. I bought the CD as soon as it came out. Much prefer it to the original version.
The best thing is to play it in the background....
A wonderful gem of a tune.
A phantastic version!!!

Man, this is amazing. Made my morning

PS seriously going to get it on vinyl, love it so much, really a real good interpretation, mesmerizing !
Absolutely superb!
Who said: MAKE IT NEW!!!???? Great new hypnotic version, even more layered than Riley..
"Make it new" is a famous Ezra Pound quote.
Amazing! You can hear the influence of 'Darude - Sandstorm' heavily in this.
lmao
Well what hasn't been influenced by "Sandstorm"?
Incredible composition meets incredible performance!
this is as "music is coming home"
Completely agree - it's as if it had full circle
This is incredible. Love this.
Wow, qué hermoso recorrido por el África desmitificado!
Fantastique et totalement en "harmonie" avec mon deuxième pays!

Wild idea! And they pulled it off. I need to get this album.

What language is being spoken around the 22-minute mark? Bambara? Songhai? Fula? Tamasheq?
Whats the martial that keeps getting sparked in?
did Damon Albarn participate in this project? is he at 13:17? does he sing at some point?
In C - Mali ways

Super psychedelic!
Joseph Wisgirda highly yes

download of audio?
Terry Riley meets Deep Forest.
Very nice, I am entering a trance. Except for that annoying violin around 17min which sounds wrong.

If Riley had wanted that in there . . .
I'm friends with him and I'll ask him what he thinks and get back to you
audio mix is way to loud!
This is not so bad, but it's only spicy.
great movie of dead country
schöne musik! nur bei dem Video wird mir irgendwann schlecht...
