Please carry on with the brake videos, theres always issues that crop up, like with the threads. Good to see the solutions, there is never a boring video on here keep at it mate
agreed.
plus if youre less experienced you don't know which bits are the same on each car and which arent, so a video of your car, or failing that, a few examples from different cars are helpful.
I think i found this channel through a brake change video btw.
Instablaster...
Codes with that much meat on the pads? That's just ridiculous!
Thousands of miles left in those pads! Typical BMW trying to milk the customer for more money
@@superseven220 or could just be a lose wire or it's just a reminder to check the pads before replacing them don't know I think on BMW you can actually tell it when you want to check the pads
@@superseven220 I'd just reposition the sensor and check every 1,000 miles.
I'm guessing it wasn't installed correctly or was damaged. I've changed brakes on several of my cars (including 2 BMW's and a Mini) and never seen that much meat left over.
James, I think you have twisted the brake hose!! It is clear to see on 20:48 and it is super important you untwist it. You did it when you removed the caliper from it hanging on the strut. Apologies if I am wrong but I am 99% sure you have - easy mistake but a dangerous one.
When's the mondeo coming back for the rear quarter pannel?
And u dont always get extras with brembos... cause that's all I buy...
wear sensors are great because i end up turning around and seeing my Astra tired brakes with lips fatter than Kim Kardashian's
hi mate how do you get in contact as i was wondering if you wanted a job , , i have an Audi A3 black which will be needing a cam belt and pump change in the next 5k and wondered if you would fancy doing it for the channel , im in narfolk (fakenham side) and will pay of course and parts
when winding calipers back, you should have took the cap off the brake fluid reservoir or you'll pop a seal in the servo, i learnt that the hard way
Yep, exactly this. And also rather than faffing around trying to push the piston back in with a clamp. Before you even start the job, just use 2 large flat blade screwdrivers. One on the top of the outer pad, and one on the bottom of the outer pad. And just pull the caliper body towards you by levering the screwdrivers. This forces the piston in. So easy to do, and no messing with clamps.
You don't... no need proper way is it crack bleed nipple off and clap the flexi, so no fluid at all go back up the system
I always crack the bleed screw so you don't risk flipping the seal. Makes it a shed load easier aswell as theres no only the friction resistance between the seal and the piston to work against.
@@jdmtomtech that's until the bleed nipped shears of as you undo it as happened to me once😣
@@mattblackledge9068 Exactly - people see low fluid so they top it up not realising the the fluid has just compensated for brake pad wear.
Pagid is a decent brand of disc and pads, There is plenty of life in them disc and pads. You should've just completed the circuit by soldering the wear sensor wires.
Good job apart from not putting new silicone grease on the sliders.
I also clean the mini gaitors & the piston rubber seal when its fully out with armorall.
Glad to see you uploading regularly again mate missed your content. 🙌
I would not be able to put those rusty callipers back on those lovely brand new disks, please tell me you will end up painting them?
Thumbs up before viewing, Cause the content is always Quality.
Baz.
Top job James, another great vid. I think it’s good you do brake vids, they are especially useful if someone owns a BMW like yours and searches you tube for a how to vid 👍 keep up the good work 👍😊
Tapping a thread is so satisfying
BMW has entered the chat-
'dont' know why they make you change them so soon..?'
Toyota has left the chat
Brembo brakes from Eurocarparts... These are just your common, or garden Brembo stuff. No better than any other reasonable brake kit. £25 wasted.
Pagid are high quality oe. Eisher are also very good value, also you can bridge those sensors to switch off the warning light
I must admit, I instantly missed the song you used for the intro on the last few videos
The most famous saying from savage garage ever "i might need two hands for this" love the car content
T-shirt/Merch? ;)
“come out you bigger”, the age old practice at swearing at a recalcitrant part always works. 👍😊
I’ve been watching you for many years now and from watching all your videos I have the confidence to fix a few jobs on my car now . Thank you for the hard work you do keep it up 👍
Always get a Haynes manual if you can. I was told up to 2014 its the book, newer its a disc!
And remember, nothing worse than having to go to get extra parts,or tools, midway through a job.
When I was a taxi driver I always bought Pagid disk and pads last forever 👍
Totally agree 👍
All good content mate. Carry on the good work please. I've done so much work on my own cars because of people like you 👍
I have been thinking of changing my EP2 brakes for a EP3 set, which I have found to be a direct swap. This has given me a good idea what I need to do, minus the brake lines, and has helped because I couldn't find a good, clear tutorial. I have only changed the o2 sensor on my car before so I am a complete novice! Thanks.
Great to see you work. Don’t matter what you do we will watch :)
I also fitted all new Brembo discs and pads all round on my car a few months back. I got them from "Demon Tweaks". They were cheaper than Eurocarparts. Even with their silly weekly discount codes.
could you do a little review on your worx range?
I mean working on BMWs is tricky enough without having to do it one handed and filming 😂. I've learned along the years that some bolt, bracket or fastener will always break or be knackered. BMW make their parts out of cheese. Loving your vids at the moment mate, all the best 👍
What has happened to the orange gloves you were using that were so good and didn’t tear so easy?

No problems what so ever... *2 vids ago* *The BMW broke down*
Excellent channel m8. Been having a tier 4 playlist boxset binge. Very informative and well explained. You’ve expanded my knowledge and look forward to future content.
Great tutorial vlog, reading some of the comments they are full of advice and ideas so I get extra bonuses from them lol thanks James for your lesson in BMW brakes and sensor replace and repair. Tom
I think your find Pagid are the better quality brakes, they are coated to prevented rusting and Pagid are the choice of many OEM’s
Just done all 4 discs on my 335d Coupe. Rear discs were Bosch, made in China!! Front discs were Brembo, boxed the same as yours, guess where they were made........yup, China! Cost a fair bit more than the Bosch too. Only bought Brembo as the Bosch fronts were out of stock. Only noticed that it showed country of origin in tiny print on the side of the box. I've nothing against Chinese manufacturing in general, lots of high tech items made there, but if I am paying a premium for Bosch I want them to be made in Germany and also paying a larger premium for the Brembo I want them to be from Italy. Did you notice that with yours? 👍👍
Everyone does their brakes differently. The way I did mine's are: 1. After I clean the caliper brackets from rust, put some anti-seize between the bracket and the spring clips to stop rust build up. When it becomes rusty, it squeezes the pads makes the pads sliding more difficult. 2. Although yes, Brembo pads does have brake shims at the back of the pad, but it still squeaks (happens to me). Same thing happened to Pagid (my uncle). So a bit of lubrication does help. In fact, I've taken my brakes apart, lub the shims for that very reason.
Please continue with brake job videos. Greets from Croatia!
Brembo discs are rubbish, the grey painted finish they have from factory goes rusty very quickly. I ended up re-painting mine. Rusty discs 👎🏻
I learned something today
Piston rewind tool is like 10£ but, g clamps are 5£ and you can do the job just fine.
DIY lvl 100!
Yeah keep doing brake videos, I learned something new and enjoyed watching 👍👍
Apparantly you are supposed to take cap off master cylinder when you push pads back, but I was taught to undo bleed nipple when forcing pads back, 😀🚗🚗
Could possibly mention torque specs throughout the process. Great videos BTW.
And say prices too, would have been nice to know how much a job like that costs.
good to see the brakes being changed however..... DONT use Copperslip or any other kind of grease anywhere near the pads. They get hot, grease melts and where do you think it can end up?
Thats right!... On the disc, not a very desireable place for it so just don't use it, especially as it doesn't need it there!
FYI , on my E39 5 series the warning light also come on after time. its only a trigger to check.
good luck if you come to change the handbrake shoes and the mechanism. Fiddly.. you wont do that whilst holding a camera :)
Carry on with the brake videos please, one problem I just ran into on my 2009 Kia Optima LX is that the brake caliper brackets warped .5 to 1 cm in from the wear and heat and now the brake pads pinch if you go to put them in with both the new brake hardware.
Awe! 😩 Cheap tap & die set is me to a tee! Sealey set ordered!
Those pads got a lot of meat on them indeed. Last year I replaced the breaks on my Corsa, those were used until they literally broke in half landing on the ground. No meat at all, just pure metal. Luckily it was on the way to the shop. 😅
Great video James! Keep it up 🙂
Surprised you didn’t clean the piston before pushing it back in?? All that crud on the piston could damage the seals 😳
The only downfallof BMW is the warning for brakes and loads of pad left, have the F21 and even after replacing the pads and sensor, the warning willnot go away, have to get it reset, i have just tucked the sensor up near the box with cable tie.
I like brake jobs and other little jobs it something to watch
Keep em coming I only found you when I got my mondeo st tdci since then I've watched all your vid's without any need to your doing a good job and Needless to say helping people build the confidence to get stuck in and have a go 👍
hey bud if you put grease under the hardware it will stop/slow rusting unfder the clips preventing rust jacking and siezing of the pads...
Doesn't matter to me if you're rebuilding a gearbox or changing a headlight bulb, I'll watch it.
I think the occasional brake video never hurts anyone. May not be that exciting for your regular viewers, however I I think its a good way to draw newer ones in that are interested in seeing how to do a job on their specific car, in this case the BMW. The job needed doing regardless, may aswell use it for material on your channel, no-one is forcing anyone to watch it if they don't want to. Nice work as always! 👍
How ever much you feel like it’s just a routine job James people will be attracted to the channel by searching RUclips and can only be good for you in the end run mate ....
When ur pushing the calipers back always take the cap off the brake fluid reseviour
You may think it’s repetitive but actually it’s a pleasure to watch you work. I wish all professional garages took as much care as you do when you are working. A lot of mechanics wouldn’t of taken the trouble to tap out the whole for that screw, they would of just binned the screw.
Easy way to get wheels off which are stuck/rusted to the hub = leave the wheel nuts just finger tight and move/drive a the car a few metres up and down, driving over something like a piece of wood to give a slight jolt. Get the car back into position, remove the wheel nuts and the wheel just drops off easily. 😊
good decision to go with brembos, i bought eicher from euro and they were horrible and squeaked like crazy. Ended up getting pagid which have been fine.
My method for a wheel stuck on the rim is to undo all the bolts except one that you leave partially threaded. Then from the other side of the wheel. Kick the wheel and tyre with your foot (whilst you are lying down).. The wheel will break free and the one partially threaded bolt will stop the alloy falling off and getting damaged...
Those pads and discs were well 'glazed'.. Even though there was thickness left it was best practice to change them in this condition.
Other good practice is to remove wheels once a year and clean up rust and muck and then regrease and refit wheels.. This gives you a chance to clean, inspect inner side of alloy and tyre..
For me front disc' and pads are usually easier, than replacing rear brake drum shoes with those pesky strong springs you have to get in & out of the shoes.
you really need quality long nose pliers for them there varmits. 😤👍🏻
Carry on bud i enjoy watching ya vids
Every Brake job is different, always show them when you can
Why would you not clean up and paint up the carrier and calliper and dust/stone guard while you changing discs and pads
P.s you should check brake fluid level and pop the cap off while pushing the piston back to release pressure
Don't worry James Dr O has made a youtube living from brake jobs :)
From someone who works in kwikfit, BMW wheels (and any wheel for that matter) come off with the least work when you leave a bolt in a few threads and smack the back of the wheel from under the car with a 5lb rubber mallet, lots of time saved and agony prevented
Big Brembo fan but the standard road stuff is a waste of money - you may as well use Ridex or Bolk for 25% of the price.
I'm going to call that brake disc securing bolt an essential item. Otherwise you have to ensure the disc, hub and wheel are aligned when it comes to putting in the first bolt. Makes me glad I have studs on my car instead.
that warning light is only for handbrake i know this coz i am studying mechanic's at college that light only comes on and off with ur handbrake which must mean ur car isn't registering ur handbrake is fully down
O the joy of BMW sensors ... On my old 320 LCI...Let the pads get too low, It also wares the sensors out and you have to replace them too...you only make the mistake once...Happy days 🙄
Hate pad wear indicators such a RIP off by manufacturers thousands of miles left but a big red light on dash to scare drivers.
You could film yourself tightening a wheel nut and i would still watch it. So yes i like to see the brake videos, 😆 good content as you always explain everything in great details 👍
Yeh carry on the brake change videos bro it's quite satisfying to watch and just witness the brakes been done for piece of mind lol plus it's a work on a motor isn't it 👍
Pagid are far superior to brembo road discs.
Shouldn't dangle the caliper on the hose.
hmm, if you put new discs, always test hubs and hub& disc with dial gauge! also, too much grease, it should be grease free almost.
The pad wear sensors are held by the caliper assembly. You were hurting my head by not immediately hanging the caliper - lol ;)
I enjoyed that keep the brake vids coming very satisfying
Break change might seems boring to u but for someone who's never done it before its not please keep doing them whatever you can thanks this video was very useful and detailed. All the best
I love break jobs I have two BMW's 530 d and 320d so this was great to watch.
Love these videos please do more and show more of what u do and how u do it I’m learning how to become a mechanic
For anyone that doesn’t have a computer, you can use the bc button on the indicator stalk to scroll through the warning messages.
Brake videos. Like them. It may be one job I could actually do!
What about changing the setting on the IDrive? This wasn't covered in the video.
Good to remember to pump the brake pedal, to move the pads out. Have gone on a test drive and found the brakes didn't work first pedal 🥲
We love to see. You change brakes and anything else remember some people have never done any jobs on cars and some have its helping ur helping people mate seeing and understanding how things work good video u show clearly step by step how to do these jobs we love the videos
Phil in stoke
James it's always worth doing videos on brakes especially if someone has a similar car or even if it isn't you show what's involved in doing that sort of thing 👍
Have you tried using ceratec grease instead of copper? Tubes are only cheap.
In most modern BMWs you can find out whats wrong with the trip button, if you turn the ignition on and hold the button until the service menu comes up, you can reset them there too without a diag tool 👍
9:15 dont hang the brake calper on the brake hose it will brake put it on something so it wont brake
Fare play but not everyone has a diag scanner and with BMW's u dont need a scanner to see which brakes need replacing u can look at the on board computer and reset the brakes with out a scan tool on a bmw
use an angle grinder to trim the sensor back problem solved!!! no light
hi buddy liked the video am looking at getting a bmw 118d as a first car are they pretty reliable or do they get a lot of faults
Those pads look fine to me my thought is that they did it as a fail safe knowing that people don't usually fix them as soon the light comes on the bus I went to school in had that light on for ages before they started scraping
I will watch all the work you do as you do it as I learn something each time you do anything so it doesn't matter what.
Liked the video on break replacement on the BMW. Can we see more please
Don't assume we know anything lol, keep em coming
Like the video. Just a one thing the reason you only get 2 bolts is you don't need to take the top caliper bolt off
The wear sensor is supposed to touch the disc at the end of the pad life. There's a thin wire carrying electricity that breaks as it contacts the disc.
Just so you no you need to change the wear sensor on BMW even if it’s not broken because they have resistors in so that car knows the pads have been changed
are u still fixeing the mondeo not seen it for a while waiting to see what your doing woth wheel arch rust keep up gd work
