The note they gave him as first note was actually Fa/F SHARP. They gave him the song in a DIFFERENT tonality from which it is usually played (aka the one he had usually listened to) so not only had he to play the melody on a calculator, which isn't designed originally to be an instrument, but additionally TRANSPORT the melody. And of course if he was used to it starting in the B sound (even if he knew it consciously or not), having the F# as his starting point may have confused him a lot more than what he might actually have been otherwise
