Alex, I own 3 Subarus. And every time I turn on your videos, I learn something new about my Subarus. Functions that I had no idea. My oldest car is a 2018. It is just a base hatchback Impreza. It was my first experience with Subaru. What I learned from buying this. At, is to stay away from the base model. I despise those steel wheels and hubcaps. I now gave 69,000 miles on that car. We used to zip tie ours to keep them on 😄 I was going to suggest getting either an oem or aftermarket alloy wheel instead, but you're way ahead of me! Hope your experience is better now
The remote start works from ANYWHERE as long as you've got service. I was on the west coast for an extended period of time. While I was away, my Subie was sitting in a parking garage at Chicago's O'Hare Airport and I started it twice while I was on the west coast.

You are becoming my "go to" guy if I have something I want to know or dig deeper on. Keep up the good work, I will continue to watch and your employers have to know they have a dedicated top notch guy in their organization!
I just bought my new 2022 Outback Wilderness last month, and I am so glad I found your channel!! The buying process was so hectic, I was a bit overwhelmed with all the features!! I am happy that I can take my time, watch your videos and process the information. ( And boy, is there a lot!) Thanks to this video, I have been able to set my Presets to MySubaru, and I may start to use the Auto Start feature... In Texas....In the Summer...! (Gonna be 100F this weekend) Thank you, Alex!
Thank you very much. I learned (in different video by another person) that I should warm up my 2019 Forrester. So I tried the MySubaru app to remotely start the engine from inside my house, and it works just fine. I was really pleased to come outside to a nice warm driver's seat. I told my wife she needs to warm up the car before driving off, and she just set up the MySubaru app on her own phone. Thank you for these videos, they are a definite help to both of us.
Hello. It is 12° right now here in northern Michigan and the auto start feature on the app has been so helpful these past couple of days. Thanks for this deep dive in to all the settings and controls.
@@mstephens7 thanks for the reply and I'm definitely in a long winter area. The price is still better than the key fob cost and with more options. There are NJ legislators currently trying to make subscriptions for vehicle functions that do not require any servicing illegal. Their thinking is if this is not a service that will require updates then why are they charging subscriptions. Seems a lot of manufacturers are doing subscriptions now. Anyway, appreciate your feedback several months after your original post
@@SageLakshmi I went with the key fob considering the subscription is $99-149. I figured I'm keeping this vehicle for a long time and would rather not have to pay each year for services I will rarely use other than the actual remote start. I also liked the ability of having the small remote start key fob separate from an app. In my opinion it was worth the $600+ for a one time fee and 2 separate key fobs provided by my dealership.
Hi Alex. I’ve been researching all things Outback and came across your videos. Really have learned a lot already. I’m close to purchasing a limited xt and was thinking I need a remote starter installed, but nope. Thanks to your video. The MySubaru app option is so much better!
Alex- It is important to note that Starlink services are NOT available to Massachusetts residents on any model year 2022+ Subaru. The reason it is not available is because Subaru intentionally disabled it to comply with the state’s updated right-to-repair law. This law - which was a voter ballot initiative (not the legislature) -- requires auto makers to use an open-standard for telematics data so that independent mechanics can have access to it. Instead of changing the Starlink system, Subaru chose to simply disable it. This means no remote start, no crash notification, and none of the other services associated with it. This law also means dealer mechanics do not have access to telematics data - Subaru decided nobody can have access to it instead of letting everybody have access to it. The other auto makers, to my knowledge, have not disabled their systems and are complying with the open standard requirement.
@@alexpmo I figured it was a good FYI for you. I am a MA resident, but thankfully I will be taking delivery on a MY21 Crosstrek this month so it's not an issue for me. It specifically applies to MY22 vehicles. There have been some articles about this on automotive news sites, but is otherwise not well publicized. There is an ongoing lawsuit by an automaker trade group over the telematics rule, so this could change, but for the time being the directive by Subaru of New England is to not activate the system for MA residents on MY22 cars. (It does not effect out-of-state residents who buy in MA, only owners who live in MA).
I just bought a 22 Forester Premium I’m in MA and I’m so bummed I can’t use the functions in the app. Trying to find a aftermarket company that has one for the 22s
@@joeychiarenza5456 I am not aware of any third party solution for this. Ironically if Subaru had chosen to adopt an open standard, which was the point of the law, then a third party could access the telematics data. Instead Subaru took the “nobody can have it” approach by disabling the feature altogether. Even the dealer service techs are not be able to access this data. Hopefully when the lawsuit is decided there will be a positive change.
I just bought a new Crosstrek and your videos are super helpful. Helped me make a decision to buy a Subaru and explain features on the car I leased. Thank you!
Alex does a great job presenting the information and demonstrating the steps to whatever he discusses. The issue I had with the app was the fact that I could not use it for three weeks. Why? Subaru could not verify the owner. The computer-based part had the car correct. The app said that the car could not be found. I called and canceled. Subaru was like, why? We can fix this. I am like, you had three weeks! No one could fix the issue. They even escalated the case to the highest-level tech. They could not fix the problem. Yeah. Technology is nice when it works.
Excellent. I stopped by to see how to change the preset temperature for remote start only to discover, I cannot. However, I learned a lot of other useful information. Thank you!
Thanks Alex! I had no idea how to unlock the gear shifter when I did a remote start; I was turning off the car and restarting it. It is great that I can see the vehicle condition check with the app: tire pressure and fuel level, I had no idea it was part of the app. So glad I found your video!
I just found that out today…traded in my 2019 forester sport for 2023 and found out I have to part with my engine starter😭 …for now. Hopefully @Subaru will figure something out

Hi, great job describing these features on Subaru's. I am looking at a '23' crosstreck limited and I was wondering if either/or the regular head lights or the DRL's. automatically come on when the remote start is activated or can they be kept off till in drive. I leave early (3am) for work and my car sits outside overnight so to warm up the car I don't want to be lighting up my neighbor's bedroom also how long will the car idle? does it shut itself off after a period of time? thank you
I was looking for info on what trim levels or equipment was required to remote start the Outback as I'm considering one as my next vehicle. But then you went and explained how the app works, wasn't expecting that. Great video, thanks for the explanation!
I was watching your video, apparently it was from a year ago. With STARLINK as far as distance for starting remotely, I have a 2021 Ascent and started my car that was parked at home in Anaheim, Ca. Once a week while on vacation in the Philippines 🤗
Grate information Alex Thank you. I just got a 2018 Subaru Forester and can't manage to use the navigation system don't know to mush about technology what do you recomend?
Thx for the last part which is key to drive: Press the brake and press the Start button to unlock the transmission. My 1st time I had to figure out by trail and error.
I was wondering what the max time is for remote start, is there a setting that will keep the car running indefinitely? Or is there an upper limit before the cars turns off, like 15 min etc? Also, let’s say you start the car via the app and then lose cell service, does the car stay running or does it shut off if you are out of service or your phone dies for example? I’m waiting for my 2022 Ascent to arrive and I appreciate your videos!
I have a 2019 Ascent. I have an issue with it turning on my AC, even though it's not the default setting i have programmed. The dealer said this is an App issue and the app group states it's a car issue. Have you come across this issue?
Thank you for this video. I just bought a 2019 outback and am following the process to prove ownership with Subaru so i can get access to the app. The previous owner looks to have set up the app, so hopefully i will only have to purchase the sub and not take it in for any updates.
I think you over-simplified the definition of what cars work with MySubaru auto-start. My wife's 2018 Crosstrek has the fob you mention but is not applicable for MySubaru according to the website.
It looks like the remote start facility is mainly available in the USA. It tried downloading the app in Australia and got a Russia/Belarus version. It appears we can’t use it over here.
I have a 2020 Subaru Outback. Will this auto start work with my auto ! Alexa , love your informative videos. It gives me more confidence and knowledge about my Outback. Thanks for all you do to keep us updated.
Great video as usual. Just FYI getting a preowned (I purchased a 2021 Subaru Outback Limited XT this past November) and getting through the Subaru National Customer Support to change the owner etc. Is a very long wait and process. I’ve been trying since November and have sat on hold for hours and have emailed and they are “experiencing long wait times” is the only response so far as well as “please be patient”. So just FYI when you’re buying a preowned be prepared to wait.
Question, I understand that you need to use the app on your cell to remote start the car. My mother lives in Northern most Vermont and there is no cell service in her area, will the app start the car without cell service?
I ordered a 2024 Forester last week and added a couple dozen accessories including remote engine start. Would I have to start the car via the Subaru app and pay for a subscription?
I just got a Subaru Outback 2017 premium [Australia] and in reading the Driver manual and in looking at your tutorials I had one main issue - having come from a previous car that was dated at 20 years old, the new tech can be overwhelming - and the Subaru is it over-whelming ^ - so the main point was to know in my head how to use all the traction controls for various driving conditions = so as an example: what to select if simply driving a freeway / driving backroads [dirt, gravel, rough and bumpy] / driving in heavy rain,
great explanations BUT MySubaru app suddenly is not responding - doesn't even open. Called my dealer - thinks it's a pairing issue? but it just randomly stopped a few weeks ago. Don't see an update. What do I do? it's getting cold here on the east coast! thanks much
Thanks for the information. Can you extend the remote start engine run time pass ten minutes. Here's why. I like to take my dog with me but sometimes she has to stay in the car while I'm at an appointment, so I lock her in the car for safety and remote start engine for cooling on hot days. How long will the car run if I remote lock the doors with the car running and key inside?
Hello, i got the 2024 crosstrek, tried remote starting it. But when i tried to drive it, the alarm triggered. Any idea what caused the alarm to set off and how to avoid it?
So getn to know our new 2023 crosstrek..love the remote start BUT when I go out to get in the Radio is blaring and the AC is on and fan is on High!! Is there way to adjust on the App!??
Can you show the new colors for 2022 forester. I ordered autumn green but can tell the difference between it and the previous lighter green color of 2021
Hi Alex, Love your videos. While this feature is very nice, I did all the same things with my 2012 GMC Terrain using the On-Star app. When I wa working, I used the local transit system to go into Philadelphia for my job. During the cold months i would use the On-Star app to start my Terrain at the station before my stop. By the time I got to my car it was all warm and toasty. The dealer I do business with has finally gotten the VIN number of my '22 Outback Touring XT. I cannot wait for the delivery.
I know this is a late comment but I wonder if you can do a video of how to have more than one user with the MySubaru app that can operate the remote functions from their phone. My wife and I share our 2023 OBW and we both would like to be able to remote start it regardless of who is using it.

Thank you for this! Used it for the first time on my 22 touring this morning. Much appreciated!
How about video how to update maps on navigation on 2022 forester. And how offend does Subaru sent out map updates
Hi Alex, info on putting google maps on my 2017, please and thankyou
Thank you for this video. I just bought a 2019 outback and am following the process to prove ownership with Subaru so i can get access to the app. The previous owner looks to have set up the app, so hopefully i will only have to purchase the sub and not take it in for any updates.
Thanks Alex,
I’ve been needing to do this with my Forester Touring.
I appreciate all the info you provide
I think you over-simplified the definition of what cars work with MySubaru auto-start. My wife's 2018 Crosstrek has the fob you mention but is not applicable for MySubaru according to the website.
does 2015 outback have the same app future or not?
Got Forester 23 recently. I am wondering if it possible to shut engine off remotely using this app if car being stolen. Thank you.
Thanks Alex. The new Subaru Impreza RS video made me come to see if there's a remote start option.
I have 2023 Forester - is there a way that I can keep defrost on so that when I remote start it will clear the windshield? TY
Hey Alex, I see how to get to the edit for the automatic, but what do u do if it says Automatic has limited settings?
Great video. Is there a way to stop the horn from beeping when using remote start? Thanks
Will this work without a starlink subscription?
How do you change Start settings? I need to change from AC to hear. Can't find anything anywhere to change it.
Does the 2018 subaru impreza have remote start?
It looks like the remote start facility is mainly available in the USA. It tried downloading the app in Australia and got a Russia/Belarus version. It appears we can’t use it over here.
I have a 2020 Subaru Outback. Will this auto start work with my auto !
Alexa , love your informative videos. It gives me more confidence and knowledge about my Outback. Thanks for all you do to keep us updated.
How do you stop the engine using the app on the iphone? Thank you.
Is the app only functional while your starling is active? So after the first 3 year membership, you have to pay for starling?
Will this ever work in Massachusetts? Right to repair law is preventing us from having this feature.
Can I disable the horn from sounding just before and after ignition? My neighbor complains when I start the vehicle remote start.
What an AWESOME video! Thank you, Alex. I had no idea my new Subaru had all of these incredible features.
Thanks Sue! It's amazing what technology can do now 😀
Hey Alex I have the app but the free trail is gone can I get my key fog to remote start
Hii there will this work with the 2021 forester touring
Auto start don’t work on 2018 forester. 3G
Any work around?
Hello, i got the 2024 crosstrek, tried remote starting it. But when i tried to drive it, the alarm triggered. Any idea what caused the alarm to set off and how to avoid it?
What do you know about 2018 Subaru h key can you use the app for that
Do you know what year the subaru has to be in order to use remote start with app?
So getn to know our new 2023 crosstrek..love the remote start BUT when I go out to get in the Radio is blaring and the AC is on and fan is on High!! Is there way to adjust on the App!??
Would be something cool to see in future Subarus but as of right now the app doesn't control the radio settings.
Can a 2016 sti still be set up with an update?
Very nice video. You provide very detailed information in a very clear way. Very informative. Subscribed!
Thanks Naeem! I really appreciate that. Thanks for watching!
Wow! Super, super good job! I really appreciate the video info by Alex. My wife and I have a 2019 Forester Touring. Thanks!! Mac
I have question about the USB charging outlets. Is it possible to have these active when the ignition is Off.
Thx
How can I program remote start on my suburu forester 2021 keyless fob
Alex, thanks for these awesome videos! Just got a new crosstrek yesterday and your videos have been so informative
Is there a way to start my Crosstrek with the app but without the lights coming on?
This was a good one Alex, I learned some new My Subaru Outback App features. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Jim! Happy to help!
how come you never cover anything about WRX/STI/BRZ vehicles?
Does this start with any subaru model? My 2022 ascent onyx is here at end of month
I started my 2022 outback when I was in the Philippines. I had my daughter watch the car start up in Chicago
I have a question for you about remote start to my phone how long does it last to re up it
Can you show the new colors for 2022 forester.
Thanks Randi! Glad you're enjoying them. Congrats on the Legacy. Should be here before you know it!
I have the 2020 cross trek. No clue how to get remote start. I can get the other functions
I know this is a late comment but I wonder if you can do a video of how to have more than one user with the MySubaru app that can operate the remote functions from their phone. My wife and I share our 2023 OBW and we both would like to be able to remote start it regardless of who is using it.
Wow, just ordered a crosstrek sport loaded and you really get alot of features on them. Good video. Thanks.
