    One theme of your channel is that there might be a neighboring winery to a very sought-after one, and that lesser appreciated winery can be a good value. Can you tell me more about that? Is that because the terroir is similar?

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  День назад +1

      @@dougronald561 Great question! Certainly in some cases there can be neighbors where the terroir is strong and very similar, but one wine isn’t as good because of decisions in the vineyard (eg, grapes may not be best for the soil, perhaps they are harvesting at the wrong time, not pruning appropriately for the weather that year, not limiting yield, not using a strict selection) or in the winery (fermentation temperature, extraction method, maturation vessel and length of maturation, etc). In that situation, new ownership or management can result in big quality increases for the underperforming winery. Those are great situations because often the improvement happens before the price increases are fully implemented.

    • @dougronald561
      @dougronald561 День назад +1

      @@AttorneySomm So, you're saying that two neighboring wineries still often produce each a product of differing quality, unless the potential of the inferior one can be recognized and reformed.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  День назад +1

      @ It is hard to generalize since there are dozens of factors that impact the wine. The point is that even where the terroir is similar there can be differences in grape growing and winemaking philosophies that result in different wines. In the example from this video, Belair underperformed its terroir until it was purchased by a producer more focused on quality in 2008 (and its name changed to Belair-Menange). In other cases, both are quality but they are just different. In other cases, the terroir may differ despite close proximity. At Vina Vik, for example, they have more than 40 different soils just in their own estate vineyards and there are also differences in sun exposure, elevation, shade and influence from coastal breezes.
      But you are correct that I try to identify scenarios where an underperformer is improving and share them on this channel. Those are often very good values.

    Great video! About the Muga recommendation I'm sure it's a great wine,(haven't tried it yet), but in general i find the 2020 vintage much better in Rioja than the 2019. I find the 19 alcoholic and one dimensional, and the 20 elegant and complex, but as always there are exceptions of course. Talking about Muga, The Muga crianza 2020 is a 20€ wine that offers exceptional complexity for a very reasonable price.
    As usual thanks for your great service, highly appreciated, and happy new year!

    Hello John and happy new year ! I am back from Houston and bought some Dana Estates VASO cab sauv, a few Schild Moorooroo Shiraz , and some wines from obscure regions like Moldova, Crete, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Turkey. My birthday is in a couple of days and I want to buy myself a present and was thinking about 6 Belair Monange but I am not sure if I should order the 2018 or the 2020 vintage. Both are almost the same price but I have to buy the 6 of the same vintage, so thats why I am not doing 3 and 3. WHich vintage should I aim for ? The fuller, richer, more hedonistic the better for me.
