"Cemetery Gates" from Pantera's "Cowboys from Hell" album (1990).
I feel like this is the beginning of a new chapter for the channel. I probably should do more metal covers since I get a lot of requests for Gojira and Mastodon.
Anyway, this was quite the journey. It's the first time that I had to play a song that wasn't in a normal tuning. I'm not sure if it's A=432 or A=425, but it's definitely no A=440. Apparently every Pantera song is in this weird tuning, so that's going to be fun for future covers.
This song is not easy by the way. Lots of variations and lots of moments where your timing has to be spot on.
Some important information that nobody is going to read.
Tuning : D-G-C-F (1/4 step down)
Artist : Pantera
Bassist : Rex Brown
Album : Cowboys from Hell (1990)
Song : CEMETERY GATES
Bass : Warwick GPS Corvette 5A Ash
i like how pantera treats bass like an instrument and not just a lower case guitar
Pantera and AIC the best bass lines🤘🤘
Rex Brown was already accomplished enough by the age of 17 that he was offered a music scholarship at the University of North Texas. I'm pretty sure he turned it down to join Pantera, but not 100 percent.

@@facundocarrizo3234 pantera and iron maiden is the best
@@omerkeskin7399 he does, because that's what bass does
The bass doesn’t get adequate respect in the metal world. Thx for tabbibg this out.
Absolutely agree. This baseline is fucking genuine
Rex is underrated
Yes
Steve Harris enter the chat
Steve Di Giorgio and his fretless must disagree
The bass composition of this song makes the song more emotional and heartwarming.
I love this cover. Rex is such a beast, the backing track in the solo part was incredible.
Thanks!
Wow didn’t know this info thanx !
First time I heard this song was the first time I realized how great Bass makes a song so much better
...and this is the reason why Pantera are called the fathers of groove metal. Rex is a huge bassist🤘🏼
great job...so effortless
Thank you!
Rex is a very underestimated player. His lines were perfect for Pantera.
For sure. And he was so young when he joined as well
Amazing song, one of my favourites. The bass line is great, and it's played so good. Congrats!
Thank you!
God bless both Pantera and Rex for playing live with such loud and clean bass lines
Tuning : D-G-C-F (1/4 step down) - most important info !
I think it'd take me longer to figure out how to tune my bass down than to actually learn the song. Great cover, what an exceptional bass line!
Yeah.. that's the downside to playing Pantera song :\
Thank you!
Thanks not just for the amazing cover, but for having the courtesy to give us a tab too. If there's one thing that irks me, it's when people do a cover and when you ask if they have a tab, they condemn you for asking such a thing because they did it all by ear. I respect such a skill to be able to use your ear like that, but guess what? I've been playing for over 15 years and always listen for the bass in music but sometimes it's still hard for me to make out what's happening in the background. And my ear isn't your ear. Cheers to you sir!
A pleasure! I enjoy transcribing and sharing the tabs more than actually recording every song :)
@@LeoBassCovers2братан! От души! Третий сутки срисовываю ээту партию с твоего урока! Отличные табы, отлично показано! Благодарность!
The Best pantera cover ever
Thank you :)
Am the only person that can’t hear the a on the d string in the main riff either awesome Fukin tab
Thank you for teaching me how to play this
Happy to help!
Another wonderful job Leo! Thank you for this!
My pleasure!
Freaking awesome 🤘
even though i think a lot of his bass playing is predictable, i have so much respect for rex’s basslines and him as a musician.
I'm pretty sure that most hobby bassists would not be able to keep up with the riffs that he played in terms of stamina. What a guy
Thank you so much for this cover
No problem! :)
Your tone is spot on...Bravo
Thank you!
Great tone dude!
Thanks a lot!
I really love this song! The bassline is great, and perfectly executed 👋👋🤘🤘
Thank you!
Such a sick bass line. Thanks for making this bro.
No problem!
Amazing
Damn you sound amazing bro
Thanks man!
NICE dude, sorry I'm late to the party!
Thank you!
Best👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
F***** awesome😍
It’s like Rex is the lead guitarist but in bass keeping up the rhythm while dime is soloing
The tabs are all over, but nicely done!
5:15 one of the trickiest sincopes ever
thanks amzing
Show!
Nice
I always though rex was too low in the mix on most of their albums
when the melody kicks in 6:45 ... this is what modern music is lacking...it's too impatient. Pantera waited for the final 30 secs for the melody and it MADE the track!
I play guitar but also have a bass, this might be the first song I learn on the bass.
You should!
@@LeoBassCovers2 do you think you could do a cover of domination?
🤘💪💪💪💪
would have been great to hear it with a Pick.
I’m trying to learn this on my bass right now and the tab for this video is different from the one I found I’m confused now
Great cover! ❤️ Can you please do frayed ends of sanity by Metallica. It has an awesome bassline
So. Many. Fills.
Wait so correct me if I'm wrong, but D# G# etc is the same as Eb Ab etc right. So is it not just tuned half a step down? Or is there something else you have to do?
You'd be correct if it wasn't for the out-of-tune pitch of this song. Some bands/artists used to export their music slightly tuned down. Usually from around 425Hz to 432Hz. Pantera is one of these bands that also did this so it's not quite D#-G#-C#-F# in 440Hz which is why you will most likely sound out of tune when you play along to it. Hope that explains it.
@@LeoBassCovers2 ok gotcha, that does make a lot more sense. Thanks!
"Bass in metal does not exist" i can't hear it" well, maybe cause your ears are full of shit, or may you don't have soul.
Love the bass, love Rex, love 90's metal, love your cover, love the tab, love the bass again and love to my mother. End of statement
Or maybe some audio hardwares are just shit when it comes to picking up bass sounds.
Or maybe the bass is simply drowned in the mix
500th like
Why the re-upload?
It's a different channel. This is the back-up channel for what used to be Leo Bass Covers.
Do you think you could keep a bass in that weird tuning for future covers? Just read the description, not that I know anything, thanks for your help on my journey! Wishing my hands were a lil bigger rn
I mean, I constantly have to tune to different tunings every week so I can't really let it stay in one particular tuning. I recently did some more Pantera covers with the same tuning :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 that makes sense xD I'll check those out! Not that I can play then, but I follow along with the 1st 2 notes or so when I can
Damn these tiny hands
can i use pick?
Of course!
I like your playing but damn the pick sounds better for Pantera 😔
Hola elver
I remember Andy Rourke style to be a lil different hmm
What strings were u running on this bad boy at the time of recording this?
99% sure I used some Warwick Black Label strings. 045 - 065 - 085 - 105 - 135,
@@LeoBassCovers2 thanks man trying to get this down on a ray34 ...almost there thanks to ur video
Easily getting your moneys worth out of it .
Great playing.
Thanks a lot!
How do u tune a 1/4 step down from D
I thought this was The Smiths song. Boy was I disappointed.
I think that's "Cemetry Gates"
Hey man I've tried downloading the tab file to learn but its failing is this an error from your upload you could try reuploading if possible?
Hmm, what does the error say? I just downloaded the tab from the link in the description in another browser and it worked.
Tune ?
D#, G#, C#, F#
it was in the description and right above it he said this is important stuff no one's gonna read. too funny
Hey Leo...can I request for Alter Bridge-wouldn't you rather, please???
Dude I literally can’t play bass with a pick
Hmm, what exactly is the issue?
Your guitar is not tuned
Try tuning it perfectly when a bands tunes their instruments to somewhere around A=425-432Hz.
