To call Rex Brown a phenomenal bassist would be an understatement. Always had a great tone and held down that groove, especially while Dimebag would be soloing.
Loved it when he would break loose from Vinnie and kinda ghost the hook parts of the solos under Dime and then right back to holding that groove down .
Rex a great bassist. It's easy to overlook bass when you have the greatest guitarist of all time and one of the greatest vocalists of all time in your group, buy Rex definitely deserves some spotlight.
This is shown very well during the solo to 5 minutes alone. That bass line that Rex throws down at the beginning of the solo is one of the grooviest bass lines of all time
Floods (more like a duet!), Walk, Hard Lines Sunken Cheeks (omg the bass line under the solo) and 5 minutes alone. Also, for the most part, Cemetery gates gets its unique key from the bassline, its only until dimes solo comes in does the guitar sound better than the bass!
I listen to Pantera almost everyday, when I work out listening to Pantera gives me power through pain. Pantera is one of the greatest bands ever in history, and will always be my number 1!!!!!!!!
The breakdown in Five Minutes Alone will always be the heaviest music I'll ever hear. No amount of machine gun beats and gurgling into the mic can top how simultaneously aggressive and confident that 15 seconds is.
I actually think the breakdown in One is the heaviest shit ever. But the idea behind our opinions are one in the same. I say this as a huge technical death metal fan haha. I agree that no amount of blast beats or growling can top how heavy both breakdowns are. 5 minutes alone is a serious contender for One though. I'm glad I saw this comment because those two songs are about as heavy as metal can possibly get.
Pantera are just the greatest of all time. One of the things that impressed me about Rex's parts was the parts he would play during the guitar solos. Sometimes a totally new riff but always fitted perfectly. No need for a rhythm guitar part.
This was easily one of the most entertaining and informative videos I’ve seen in a while!! Feel free to do whatever you want, of course, but I certainly wouldn’t mind if you did this type of video for every band you like😂
@@ikon4255 I was thinking the same. It sounds like it'd be good until you really listen. Like you said it sounds processed and muddy to where you can't pick the notes out so much

@@seansullivan7928 playing with a pick vs fingers brings a lot of different tones and can make certain riffs more difficult to play depending on how they’re written. A big part of Rex’s style was the specific tone he got from playing with a pick.
Dimebag is one of the best metal guitarist of all time, but people underestimate how much Rex added to Dimebag's live sound. I remember watching a live video while they were playing and Rex's bass cut out for a few seconds and you could hear the difference. Not taking anything away from Dimebag, absolutely not, just saying that it makes a big difference and it takes Dimebag's sound to a whole other level. Go check Art of Shredding from their 1990 HQ live performance, you can hear Rex's bass during Dime's solo and it's pretty insane what he is doing.
Im a guitar player but bass was my first love still love bass i dont want to hear a band without a bass player love hearing bass gettin to shine with its own solos ive heard some really good bass songs just bass and drums...i could listen to a good bass player like this guy and just drums and i love guitar but im ramblin sorry nice video!
Loved the video all of those songs sound so much better with Brown’s bass behind dime. Another song the bass is great in is shedding skin I would love to see you make a part 2 with more great pantera songs with profound bass.
Know what, I'm gonna say it - Rex was/is truly one of the best metal bassists ever. Usually when you listen to isolated bass tracks in metal you think "huh, this doesn't really sound all that great on its own", but when you listen to Rex's isolated tracks, or along with drums like in this awesome video, you automatically adapt your "war face" and start headbanging like crazy. Such insanely talented people, all of them in Pantera.
I’ve mostly focused on Dime Vin, & Phil depending on the tune but hell yeah this rocks🤘🏼 gives a whole new appreciation for what Rex was doing! Great playin man ….Rock on 🤘🏼 💯🎶

Rex Brown is fucking underrated, he doesn't really get that much attention, my brother says Pantera should have rhythm guitarist for live. I'm like "what?"
Rex was a big reason why pantera still sounded so full/dense/heavy with only one guitarist.
