Dear Dr. Asad, Adrieene and all
It’s me the ‘infamous’ Jonah, lol.
I am sorry for all the confusion that my intervention could have caused. That was not intended. So sorry for that 😞
I received a message from a friend who also watches your shows telling me that my identity and my contributions have gotten a number of negative reactions. I must start off by saying confidently that I am one of the most honest people (not to blow my own horn). I live my faith.
That being said, I must state it categorically that I am South African. My father immigrated before the end of Apartheid. So, my childhood, my adolescence, my early adulthood and my life as an adult has been lived in South Africa, with South Africans. This means that my all my friends, my colleagues, my classmates, my enemies and all those who love and hate me for one reason, or another are South Africans (now maybe Zimbabweans 😊). My first crush, my first heartbreak, my first love, my matric dance (I don’t know what they call it now because so much has changed since I left school), my experience of racism and all my firsts have been in SA amongst my people.
Food, drinks, dance, music, clothing, football (the sky is the limit), taxis, ukutwasa and many other things.
I don’t see nationality as a primordial concept where it is only defined by certain mutable characteristics, but it is also about what makes one who they are. What makes you angry, happy, sad and motivated.
It is on that basis that I felt compelled to react to the idea that my name, accent or facial features would be subject of discussion and characterisation. The South Africans live in me, and I love the people because they are in me. No body can take them out of me. They are mine. I love them.
During the 1990’s during the height of HIV pandemic, I volunteered in an orphaned, I was a very young, but I knew through my honourable father that I needed to contribute. I was the only ‘none’ South African in that place. Every Saturday for 5 years, I was volunteering my time instead of playing with my friends. Therefore, I know people, young and old, who died from that situation, their faces and names, I have never forgotten. So, we raised money for funerals, and to support the orphaned children. I paid with my blood, sweat and tears.
How can I allow anyone to take it from me? It is to dear to my identity.
So, for me, SA must succeed.
I can add as well that I do for SA more than the majority of people will ever do in their lifetime. For example, we have bought 1233 books which we wanted to send to a School in SA (Pretoria). I approached various political leaders (evidence available) in order to facilitate shipping and distribution to the schools.… we got promised for support and I am still waiting. (maybe the pandemic affected their focus). All we needed was for transport to be guaranteed.
During the pandemic, a number of my friends in SA lost their jobs. I connected a few of them with British businesspeople with whom they made business. It allowed them to live.
I don’t think of them differently but only as my people. My success is linked to theirs, because when in need their families supported me and mine. Their fathers and mothers disciplined me.
how can I allow anyone to take it from me?
      Never.
additionally, I don’t think A. Americans or Africans, or any people group is lazy. People toil for food, shelter and security. That would be silly to make that conclusion, knowing our history as a people in general. Most of the people in the continent are first or second generation born free from colonization or oppression.
I study cultures, so my questions were an attempt to draw from you what you thought was the impediment to our success. Perhaps my question lacked the necessary details, but the same question applies throughout the continent. Your answer was important. That is because wherever we are, we find ourselves at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder and that is a fact. We must do something about it. Right?
I for one don’t know what to do. But as a researcher I ask questions. No prejudices or biases. Just quest for truth.
I didn’t talk about the land question. This question is huge not only in SA, just check out what is happening in Mali now. France is on the offensive. It will give you a picture of the profoundness of the issue. However, in the people of SA you will find true friends. Amazing people ❤.
Finally, my experience, my life, my friends, in laws, nieces and nephews all of which are a mixed masala of South African cultural identity are part of me.
I am therefore South African, although naturalised but I am.
To everyone who might read this far, I am your brother and I am your friend

What we want as South Africans need us South Africans for heaven sake. Why are black Americans so different from the rest of this people? why are they fighting so hard for South Africa to change and suit them? can't they learn from blacks Americans?
is so sad how black Americans are the most successful black nation yet so humble but people who have achieved nothing are all in our business.

good day guys, I think the land issue is very hot topic here in this country. I think every one has their own opinion. I also think that south Africa has a unique history and even with the tribes that are traditionally known as South Africans. I think once again,💓💓 the reason why the Chinese is doing well all over, they are united as a nation and take back to their own country and stand together. Africans and any of the countries in the content are not and have not been due to colonist and the west and when you get into this deeper, you can see the trauma that it has caused dividing the beautiful content of Africa.
nevertheless, i just love the debate at least it is starting the connection. agreed, the discussion should not be arguments but lets educate ourselves and each other on both ends of the coin

Respectfully the lady that was offering land willy nilly to African American is being sincere but not practical. I apologise I did not get her name.
I could expand on this but this is not a practical platform for that.
The bottom line is we South Africans are welcoming to every black person across the diaspora as long as they have the skills to do so. Please stay away from South Africa if you are going to come here without anything worthwhile to contribute to this special place called South Africa.
