First digit = amount of channels Second digit = series Third/Fourth digit = watts per channel Example= the Marantz 2270 is a 2 channel receiver from the 2 series, with 70 watts per channel. The 1 series are very old, like 50s and 60s, the 2 and 3 series were made in the 70s. The 2 and 3 series-also known as 22 and 23 series are the same except all 23 models have more the 100 watts per channel, and all 22 models have less than 100 watts per channel.

I have a fully restores 2325 and absolutely love it. I used to own a 2270 back in the 70’s. I got lucky and built a vintage system for myself. 2325 receiver, 5220 cassette deck, and 6300 turntable - all Marantz fro same era. Speakers are a pair of Dynaco A25’s. Wonderful sounding set up.
I just got a 2245 in working condition for $700. Originally $800 but the seller sent me a discount offer after having it on my EBay watch list for almost a year. So I jumped on the deal cuz I was afraid I would never get that kind of deal again. After purchasing I found that the seller was right here in my own state of Oregon! So I received it in just a couple days which was so awesome. The only non-functioning item is that the Stereo light doesn’t come on in the Radio stage. It comes on in all other functions. Other than that, I am completely blown away by the build quality of this receiver! It is built like a tank and functions So Smoothly! I’m lucky the radio dial lights look Beautiful along with all of the Function lights. The VU meter lights are on but the Signal Strength meter doesn’t move and that light is starting to turn white. Other than that it seems to be in pretty great shape! I am lucky enough to have a vintage stereo repair guy in my pocket and he’s going to bring everything to factory condition, or “Better” by his words for a hundred bucks. He did my Pioneer SX-750 a few years ago and It is still like brand new so he has my full confidence! I feel like I got a fantastic deal for $700! I am So happy cuz I never thought I’d be a vintage Marantz owner! I’m SO curious what this unit would be worth in factory condition after my stereo guy is done with it. Anyway.. just wanted to share my excitement. Thanks for the video
If there's no FM stereo light coming on when using the FM radio, (but works on other inputs) then the FM radio section almost certainly needs repair and alignment. Fairly common on vintage equipment, but may be a task to find some one that can repair a vintage unit these days.
I have a 2285, no B, I bought at an estate sale 11 years ago for $25. Had no idea rather it worked or not. It did and does, but several of the bulbs are out, as typical, and the pots could stand a cleaning, Great and pretty rare Marantz receiver.
Still have my Marantz 2220B with Dobly FM Switch (per the outside of the original box). This was the first stereo component I purchased when I was a kid (I think I was 14 at the time). What a classic - love the unique look of Marantz receivers, as well as their sound.
I picked up a 2220B at Goodwill about 20 years ago. It's been sitting under my monitor since then and is a daily driver as a tuner and computer speaker system. Have used it in the past with a turntable when I was ripping rekkids to CDs for people. Best $35 I ever spent.
I have the 2220B, I really like it it has enough power for my Reel to Reels and turntable, great for my small apartment. I would like to get the walnut cabinet for it, if I could find one in good shape.

I have the 2252b. Bought it when I was 17 years old. The model number means; first no. 2 is Chanel’s (stereo). The second 2 means capable of hooking up two sets of stereo speakers. 52 is watts per ch. b is the second version of that model.

I have an original 2238 that I bought new when I was in junior high all those years ago. It's still my main receiver and the only issue is the bulb on the fine tuning meter is burnt. I also have a restored 2275 that is a beauty, I'm just trying to decide what speakers to go with. Marantz rated their power sources accurately if not conservatively. The tech I go to says that Marantz were built to last and easily repairable if they do break. Great video, thanks!

Most of these receivers have drop out due to the contacts are dirty. Jiggle the selector switch, volume knob or balance control it might come on. Fix it right with contact cleaner.
These 70's Marantz are so well made, they sound very good and loud! even a 20 watt per channel is often enough, heavy and built to last they are real tanks!
They’re good and I own one. Definitely has that incredible coolness factor, maybe like a classic vintage car. However in my opinion a good modern high fi amp can be better sounding but that’s just my opinion.

These models surely are the most beautiful & sought after of 70's gear, dont get it twisted however. There are many other brands of the era that produced similar style/quality receivers that can be gotten on the cheap today. Nikko is one of those brands for example, not well known and HIGHLY underrated performance.
Absolutely, these were superior products built by Marantz in the 1970's. In the last four decades, there has been enormous advances in manufacturing, materials and electronics technology. That being said, Marantz still builds hi fi components today - being there is such a demand for these vintage units, whats preventing Marantz from building a new model receiver, essentially replicating a model 2270, 2600, etc., with a brushed aluminium faceplate, flywheel tuning, chrome knobs, etc, and charge the current market price for a unit at that level of quality? Im sure there would be a heckuva demand for a new unit at that level of quality. I know I'd have my checkbook ready to go! Are any executives at Marantz ever considering "bringing back" some of these classics?
Im a hifi collector , i have about 200 units amps , decks , cd s , reels , everything , been in hifi business for 20 years now , for one reason or another i didnt own a marantz unit until last week when i found a very basic unit , a little 1515 model , with 15 w power .........u know , when u have 130w amps , like yamaha ax 900 or denon pma 1560, dual mono with 8 or 12 transistors , u think units with 15 w power are some jokes , i admit i thought this also , until i powered up little 1515, this guy makes my heco superior 800 speakers roar like hell , very bassy sound , cristal trebles , seriously i cannot understand how and why , but those 15 marantz watts equal AT LEAST 50 w power from technics, onkyo,kenwood,sony,yamaha, and others...........sound quality above all those too, in my hifi years i encounter few amps which dont need loudness to fill a room , this baby is one of them , now i understand why they are so damn expensive .........not to mention fact this little receiver makes many more new and expensive amps sound like a broken drum .........damn , i need more marantz units.
Agree that you can safely select a Marantz based on its looks, provided it's in a power range (and price range) that works for you. Also, some models don't have the trademark Marantz slide control for balance; my 2270 has a rotary knob, which I like better. But it's not a big deal. As others have noted, the lowest power models, e.g. 2216, punch way above their weight in volume and sound quality.
@@heroichucho4573 in my opinion look for the Marantz that you like and can afford, but be sure it has input jacks for AUX or TAPE so that you can use it for playback.
After replacing all of the components, it is very important to adjust the DC Bias, then the DC offset Voltages. This applies to ALL Receivers of ANY Brands.
Good info, I love my Marantz it's a Quadraphonic model so not as powerful but plenty loud. had to deoxit the pots new led bulbs and replaced a few caps but other than that it was great...
I currently own a 2250b that I had restored. It was not cheap ,wut when done right I will last for along time with that warm Marantz sound. Face plates and wood cabinets are available on line. Marantz manuals can be downloaded on line.

In short, Im forced to have everything running through the Tape Monitor Input (via a passive audio switcher) because all of the other inputs produce distorted sound on the right channel. And NOW thats starting to happen on that input as well . Do you have an email address I could contact you at?
After finding a 2252 b I immediately took it to my vintage guy for a look. This receiver luckily was in fine working order and was producing 58 wpc. I’ve always suspected the Marantz people under rated their equipment this way but that didn’t make sense given the wpc battles at that time. I’ll never know for sure maybe someone else has had this experience ?
That’s a reflection of the quality of Marantz gear. I still have my Marantz 2275 receiver I bought in 1977, serviced in 1998 after 5 house moves, everything still works. Best $325 I ever spent on audio gear.
Transformer (laminate hold plates together degrades and begins to hum). Unbolt plate and try to dip in laminate. There are youtube vids on this. Main caps usually go bad (those should be replaceable).
Saul Marantz was a genius. He traveled from town to town in a station wagon with equipment and a stereo test and demonstration record to show audio retailers what true stereo was. Many retailers would sell mono hi fi owners an extra speaker and call it “stereo.”
First number how many channels. Second number if 2, it's under 100 watts per channel. If second number is 3, it is over 100 watts per channel. Third and fourth number is the watts rms plus 100 watts if second number is 3. If second number is 2, the third and fourth number is the rms wattage. The monster receivers (2500/2600) are first number how many channels. The rest are the RMS total watts both channels combined. Older 2 digit numbers are the number of pieces made, ascending.
Thanks - I have a super sounding 2226B Marantz which has an intermittent fault of cutting out in the left channel, sometimes with a bit of distortion and particularly when 'cold'. So works fine some days, others not, which as you can imagine is very annoying. What's worse is I took it to a supposed reputable repairer who 'couldn't find anything wrong with it' (it is definitely faulty, regardless of source or speaker selection, however more pronounced on the phono selection) and claims to have done some re-soldering of some connections. Anyway, no change, so am really looking forward to your future videos as this might at least give me some clues as to how to find the fault and possibly fix. I've gone back to another amp as it was ruining my listening pleasure, but really want to get my Marantz working properly again....Cheers!

I have a Sherwood S7244 receiver from the mid 1970's with a similar intermittent problem - namely, the left speaker would go out. It was looked at and checked out to death under warranty, but was never fixed. Numerous resoldering of connections didn't fix it either. Sherwood even extended my warranty but no one was able to fix it. Strangely enough, I still have this receiver. Maybe one day.....
I guess I should have held on to the 2245 I bought in 1977 when I was selling Marantz, Sony and JBL and other brands of audio gear. I always thought their stuff was the best looking of all.

back in 2013-2s through 2016 got some really good prices. example. model 125 tuner 250. 3 1150s integrated amp for 215 to 160.00. 22220B 185.00 Model 20 tuner for unbeliveable 600.0 perfect conditon. 2225 recapped for 250.00. 2240B for 185. and on and on. NOW its crazy prices. are they running out? Or is the market changing because of extra money from covid. Your guess is as good as mine. All i know I could make a killing if i choose to sell. which is very unlikey. I'm still trying to buy at a nominal fee for a pristine setup. but also have other high end brands which will go down to my family. Remember you can get very good prices on Craigslist. Just got 1 Klipsch Hersey perfect condition for 275. looking for a matching one. Just be patient and create a decent communication with seller and you might get get some for a little less. I have a set of Dynaco a 25 speakers and a marantz 2245 receiver.. it is not very loud so I just bought a marantz 1060 amplifier. and 2 extra speakers also a linear cassette deck and marantz 6 CD player for $2500 is this a decent system.
Nah…I just bought a Pioneer SX 780. That’s enough for me, since it’s my third stereo system. I will get more stylus cartridges, and maybe new and/or different speakers and a CD player, but for all intents and purposes I’m done buying major stereo gear. I have plenty of software/vinyl to play. However I’m always interested in looking at these systems.
I replaced lamps with incandescent, and the two stereo indicators with led. Left original incandescent in all other indicator spots. Used one layer of vellum. Now dial is very dim. LEDs were 8v vs 6.3v original. What do you think?
Hi! I had 2230 and 2245, I loved them so much but then I ended my vintage experience.. Now I use a marantz pm 7005 what has far better sound than these vintages (2230 and 2245) I feel the pm 7005 more detailed, the sound stage wider, the freq response better at the edges both in bass and treble. Sorry if I hurt vintage fans, I had some receivers from the 70s, 80s and 90s.They were great at that time and great today but a lot of things changed in that 40-50 years.
They might have the sound, but missing a lot in the looks department. I think that's why people like the vintage for its classy look. Especially if you have the walnut cabinet for the receiver.
Actually I think the first digit is whether it's a receiver or an amplifier. The second digit I think becomes a 3 when the power total exceeds 100 watts.
I enjoy paying 200% over what a Marantz is worth relative to others, then sitting down and playing mp3s through it, while reading the Marantz spec sheet assuring me how superior the sound is.

They look nice but smell strange while playing. The pcb boards heat and out gas in a stink which is different than other vintage gear ive smelled before. They also have a muddy sound which some people like. They are easy to fix, otherwise and go for big bucks due to their collectablity.

I just bought a SR1000 Looked beautiful inside and out could not believe how clean it is But. After hooking is up no FM stereo on left channel I know you have had this problem on units you rebuilt One time you jumped out the pre-in & pre-out, did not work on mine. Could you do a rebuild on a FM turner board or give m a hint. I have full power FM mono. Thanks

Looking up what B means with a quick google search will give you the info you need. But saying "whatever looks best" on judging what era o marantz would be best is just demeaning to engineers and ignorant to the brand. Every era has their own flavor in productivity in sound. It all depends on what speakers and setup you need to match the sound you are looking for. They make certain watt recivers for a reason.
Hi, I have a question for you: I have used my Marantz 2230 for years now playing Vinyl exclusively. Recently I aquired a Denon DCD 1500 CD player and wanted to hook up the cd player to my Marantz receiver using Red and black RCA cables. I used the Tape in inputs on the marantz and the "fixed"output on my cd player. I get no sound whatsoever. I tried some different inputs, plugged it into the AUX input on my receiver, changed from Fixed to variable outputs on the cd player, but nothing....Am I doing something wrong? Apologies for the noob question
B designated direct coupled outputs. Power supply in nonB versions were single supply with AC coupled outputs. They went to split supplies in the B version, and could therefore put outputs at DC ground, no output cap.

Bought a Marantz 2240 in about 1970 for $400, $2963 now. It's gone, I sold it many years ago. When tested at the dealer it produced 50 watts per channel. Later it failed with no sound, fortunately under warranty. I was aware of two others who owned Marantz receivers. One of theirs failed too. I will not buy a used one.

Im a hifi collector , i have about 200 units amps , decks , cd s , reels , everything , been in hifi business for 20 years now , for one reason or another i didnt own a marantz unit until last week when i found a very basic unit , a little 1515 model , with 15 w power .........u know , when u have 130w amps , like yamaha ax 900 or denon pma 1560, dual mono with 8 or 12 transistors , u think units with 15 w power are some jokes , i admit i thought this also , until i powered up little 1515, this guy makes my heco superior 800 speakers roar like hell , very bassy sound , cristal trebles , seriously i cannot understand how and why , but those 15 marantz watts equal AT LEAST 50 w power from technics, onkyo,kenwood,sony,yamaha, and others...........sound quality above all those too, in my hifi years i encounter few amps which dont need loudness to fill a room , this baby is one of them , now i understand why they are so damn expensive .........not to mention fact this little receiver makes many more new and expensive amps sound like a broken drum .........damn , i need more marantz units.
I own a 2220b and it is beautiful and sounds even better.

Agree that you can safely select a Marantz based on its looks, provided it's in a power range (and price range) that works for you. Also, some models don't have the trademark Marantz slide control for balance; my 2270 has a rotary knob, which I like better. But it's not a big deal. As others have noted, the lowest power models, e.g. 2216, punch way above their weight in volume and sound quality.
Any recommendations for a marantz that is compatible with compact disc players? thank you!
@@heroichucho4573 in my opinion look for the Marantz that you like and can afford, but be sure it has input jacks for AUX or TAPE so that you can use it for playback.

After replacing all of the components, it is very important to adjust the DC Bias, then the DC offset Voltages. This applies to ALL Receivers of ANY Brands.
Funny how things come back. In the 80's you could pickup any of those for $25 to $50 in pawn shops or $15 at a goodwill.
Even cheaper at garage sales and even found one in a dumpster....and yes it worked perfect :)

Good info, I love my Marantz it's a Quadraphonic model so not as powerful but plenty loud. had to deoxit the pots new led bulbs and replaced a few caps but other than that it was great...
Mines a 4300 i run it in 2CH bridged mode and it rocks

I currently own a 2250b that I had restored. It was not cheap ,wut when done right I will last for along time with that warm Marantz sound. Face plates and wood cabinets are available on line.

@@AHFixIt Hello! I would love to pick your brain about a Marantz 2252 I purchased some time back on eBay (supposedly in restored condition) that began to slowly give me issues over the years. In short, Im forced to have everything running through the Tape Monitor Input (via a passive audio switcher) because all of the other inputs produce distorted sound on the right channel. And NOW thats starting to happen on that input as well . Do you have an email address I could contact you at?

I really like the KLH speakers.
After finding a 2252 b I immediately took it to my vintage guy for a look. This receiver luckily was in fine working order and was producing 58 wpc. I’ve always suspected the Marantz people under rated their equipment this way but that didn’t make sense given the wpc battles at that time. I’ll never know for sure maybe someone else has had this experience ?

That’s a reflection of the quality of Marantz gear. I still have my Marantz 2275 receiver I bought in 1977, serviced in 1998 after 5 house moves, everything still works. Best $325 I ever spent on audio gear.
Transformer (laminate hold plates together degrades and begins to hum). Unbolt plate and try to dip in laminate. There are youtube vids on this. Main caps usually go bad (those should be replaceable).
Saul Marantz was a genius. He traveled from town to town in a station wagon with equipment and a stereo test and demonstration record to show audio retailers what true stereo was. Many retailers would sell mono hi fi owners an extra speaker and call it “stereo.”
I feel lucky enough to have the chance to meet Saul Marantz in the early 80s when he joined Dahlquist to promote the DQ10.
First number how many channels.
Second number if 2, it's under 100 watts per channel. If second number is 3, it is over 100 watts per channel.
Third and fourth number is the watts rms plus 100 watts if second number is 3. If second number is 2, the third and fourth number is the rms wattage.
The monster receivers (2500/2600) are first number how many channels. The rest are the RMS total watts both channels combined.
Older 2 digit numbers are the number of pieces made, ascending.
Thanks - I have a super sounding 2226B Marantz which has an intermittent fault of cutting out in the left channel, sometimes with a bit of distortion and particularly when 'cold'. So works fine some days, others not, which as you can imagine is very annoying. What's worse is I took it to a supposed reputable repairer who 'couldn't find anything wrong with it' (it is definitely faulty, regardless of source or speaker selection, however more pronounced on the phono selection) and claims to have done some re-soldering of some connections. Anyway, no change, so am really looking forward to your future videos as this might at least give me some clues as to how to find the fault and possibly fix. I've gone back to another amp as it was ruining my listening pleasure, but really want to get my Marantz working properly again....Cheers!
Hi I had a 2226b for 30 years, I too had a intermittent fault, turned out to be the tape monitor switch, found the fault by chance random pushing ...

I have a Sherwood S7244 receiver from the mid 1970's with a similar intermittent problem - namely, the left speaker would go out. It was looked at and checked out to death under warranty, but was never fixed. Numerous resoldering of connections didn't fix it either. Sherwood even extended my warranty but no one was able to fix it. Strangely enough, I still have this receiver. Maybe one day.....
I still have a pair of acoustic research AR-19 LS speakers.....pretty rare now.....

back in 2013-2s through 2016 got some really good prices. example. model 125 tuner 250. 3 1150s integrated amp for 215 to 160.00. 22220B 185.00 Model 20 tuner for unbeliveable 600.0 perfect conditon. 2225 recapped for 250.00. 2240B for 185. and on and on. NOW its crazy prices. are they running out? Or is the market changing because of extra money from covid. Your guess is as good as mine. All i know I could make a killing if i choose to sell. which is very unlikey. I'm still trying to buy at a nominal fee for a pristine setup. but also have other high end brands which will go down to my family. Remember you can get very good prices on Craigslist. Just got 1 Klipsch Hersey perfect condition for 275. looking for a matching one. Just be patient and create a decent communication with seller and you might get get some for a little less. I have a set of Dynaco a 25 speakers and a marantz 2245 receiver.. it is not very loud so I just bought a marantz 1060 amplifier. and 2 extra speakers also a linear cassette deck and marantz 6 CD player for $2500 is this a decent system.

Nah…I just bought a Pioneer SX 780. That’s enough for me, since it’s my third stereo system. I will get more stylus cartridges, and maybe new and/or different speakers and a CD player, but for all intents and purposes I’m done buying major stereo gear. I have plenty of software/vinyl to play. However I’m always interested in looking at these systems.
I replaced lamps with incandescent, and the two stereo indicators with led. Left original incandescent in all other indicator spots. Used one layer of vellum. Now dial is very dim. LEDs were 8v vs 6.3v original. What do you think?

Hi! I had 2230 and 2245, I loved them so much but then I ended my vintage experience.. Now I use a marantz pm 7005 what has far better sound than these vintages (2230 and 2245) I feel the pm 7005 more detailed, the sound stage wider, the freq response better at the edges both in bass and treble.
Sorry if I hurt vintage fans, I had some receivers from the 70s, 80s and 90s.They were great at that time and great today but a lot of things changed in that 40-50 years.
They might have the sound, but missing a lot in the looks department. I think that's why people like the vintage for its classy look. Especially if you have the walnut cabinet for the receiver.

Actually I think the first digit is whether it's a receiver or an amplifier. The second digit I think becomes a 3 when the power total exceeds 100 watts.

They look nice but smell strange while playing. The pcb boards heat and out gas in a stink which is different than other vintage gear ive smelled before. They also have a muddy sound which some people like. They are easy to fix, otherwise and go for big bucks due to their collectablity.

Great channel you made a subscriber outta me but you didn't touch on the Marantz.Sony partnership called Superscope I own a basic Tuner with blue face must have been built by Marantz in the late 1960's I tried to sell it on Ebay nobody wanted it so I kept it and fell back in love with it I work it in with my Sherwood s 5500 II sometimes and it sounds great.

I just bought a SR1000 Looked beautiful inside and out could not believe how clean it is But. After hooking is up no FM stereo on left channel I know you have had this problem on units you rebuilt One time you jumped out the pre-in & pre-out, did not work on mine. Could you do a rebuild on a FM turner board or give m a hint. I have full power FM mono. Thanks

Looking up what B means with a quick google search will give you the info you need. But saying "whatever looks best" on judging what era o marantz would be best is just demeaning to engineers and ignorant to the brand. Every era has their own flavor in productivity in sound. It all depends on what speakers and setup you need to match the sound you are looking for. They make certain watt recivers for a reason.

Hi, I have a question for you: I have used my Marantz 2230 for years now playing Vinyl exclusively. Recently I aquired a Denon DCD 1500 CD player and wanted to hook up the cd player to my Marantz receiver using Red and black RCA cables. I used the Tape in inputs on the marantz and the "fixed"output on my cd player. I get no sound whatsoever. I tried some different inputs, plugged it into the AUX input on my receiver, changed from Fixed to variable outputs on the cd player, but nothing....Am I doing something wrong? Apologies for the noob question
It sounds like an issue with your CD player. If phono works, then everything that runs tape and aux inputs works also. Try it with another amp.

B designated direct coupled outputs. Power supply in nonB versions were single supply with AC coupled outputs. They went to split supplies in the B version, and could therefore put outputs at DC ground, no output cap.
What is your speaker brand?

Bought a Marantz 2240 in about 1970 for $400, $2963 now. It's gone, I sold it many years ago. When tested at the dealer it produced 50 watts per channel. Later it failed with no sound, fortunately under warranty. I was aware of two others who owned Marantz receivers. One of theirs failed too. I will not buy a used one.
So I want to sell a Marantz! I need some help trying to find the value of what I own.
