In December it was announced that the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory National Ignition facility has achieved its first goal of “Ignition”, in which 192 powerful lasers focused on a small pellet of fuel led to a sustained fusion reaction for a fraction of a second that released more energy than it received from the incident laser light. Following on requests from many readers, I describe the science behind this experiment, and the wishful thinking associated with it, regarding the possible use of fusion as an unlimited power source for humanity in the future.
This special holiday edition of Science Matters accompanies our last podcast, with Augusten Burroughs, which was about another kind of wishful thinking. I hope you enjoy this science as much as I hope you enjoyed that delightful discussion with a wonderful writer.
Happy Holidays from Critical Mass, The Origins Foundation, the Origins Podcast, and from me.

There is a slight subtle error at 18:30 where what you are describing with the lasers impinging directly on the fuel pellet with perfect spherical symmetry is actually what we do at the Lab for Laser Energetics at the U of Rochester and is called direct drive ICF; but what the NIF did is actually not hit the fuel pellet with the lasers at all, but rather situated the pellet inside a hollow gold can (hohlraum) and shone the lasers on the inner walls of the can so as to convert a fraction of the laser energy into a bath of thermalized x-rays (blackbody radiation) which then very smoothly and evenly irradiates the fuel pellet so as to suppress hydrodynamic instabilities in the imploding fuel layers. This latter indirect drive process is actually GROSSLY inefficient and only 20-30Kj of the original 2MJ UV light actually makes it onto the surface of the pellet in the form of x-rays. We've been gently nudging the NIF people to reconfigure their laser for direct drive shots so as to increase the incident radiation on targets by literal orders of magnitude, but as yet they have resisted. The trade off is that the irradiation anisotropy is higher in direct drive, risking seeding Rayleigh-Taylor instabilites, but of course a hypothetical future power plant based on laser ICF could never use the indirect drive method, what with its requirement for 10Hz shot rates and would have to use direct drive pellet irradiation.

Happy Holidays professor Krauss! I'm reading Quantum Man at the moment and my neverending admiration for Feynman is reaching beyond stars thanks to you.
Please keep teaching by doing Solo stuff. Science fuckin matters!

Glad to be the first like, and to catch another podcast from my science crush so early. Also, thank you for engaging me so respectfully on Twitter, even if we had a little disagreement.
You’re still one of my heroes. ❤

Sometimes I feel my public school education of Science is what caused me to have a disadvantage in life or maybe it was just my education in Texas. However Thanks to Gentlemen like Lawrence I am able to catch up with the rest of the universe. i thought the earth was only 6 thousand years old (just kidding)

Thanks for the illuminating talk. For some reason, which is beyond my understanding,I hadn't even thought of the fact that this project was military based. As with so much of our research, sadly. Still, it is an incredible piece of work and if we don't manage to fry ourselves beforehand, either with bombs or greenhouse gases, then who knows where it may lead....as with all science research.
Finally I hope you enjoyed Xmas ( I'm a fellow atheist but hey...maybe Santa is real . He certainly is for my young neice's and they've at least got some evidence - presents- to back their belief). And a happy new year to you and all at origins

More seriously - you're filling in the gaps in a way that fits - perhaps I speak for other curious people who find themselves with the freedom and time (space time haha), to wander inward and thus so far outward (couldn't find the button to edit out the sap/geek - sorry) Can't thank you enough professor. P.s. we miss C.H. sad face

How can the initial temperature Of shortly after the Biggy Bangy Thingy of 10, 000,000,000 degrees or so exist... what is this temperature "in relation" to... if there were no atoms of any type existing yet?

I would love to listen this, its a great subject and an excelent presenter but I have to stop. I am sure I am not alone in detesting the distracting slimy "music" spread all over. What is its purpose? I hope a few more comments like this help this awfull trend to die out. On the other hand, I might just be an oddity with the rest of the listeners enjoying the background noise.
