Science Matters EP11: The Holiday edition

  • To celebrate the holidays, I ponder the conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn that will be visible on Dec 21, and how that relates to claims of a Star of Bethlehem, and then display recent results showing the real motion of stars in the night sky, and finally describe the exciting Japanese satellite that returned a time capsule from the beginning of the solar system 4.55 billion years ago. We can celebrate how lucky to be in our amazing Universe at the same time as we celebrate each other. Happy Holidays!

I always have wondered why the constellations weren't moving at all in the sky with so much movement of the Milky Way's rotation and smearing of star trails, as I pictured it. As I studied Astronomy in recent years, I came to my own conclusion roughly as described here but nice to have the confirmation, as it was never covered in the magazines, and hear the numbers on the calculation. Good answers. Thanks.

    Hello Mr. Krauss,
Thanks for this short but nice “Science Matters” episode.
As I was listening to your insights about the « Bethlehem star », I could not help to wonder what if by some dumb luck an Interstellar visitor like 'Oumuamua in 2017 passed by our world while, like some comets, offering a high reflectivity index, an albedo very near 1.
Wouldn’t that look to sheep and goat hoarders as a special star?
(Ok, it’s a bit of a stretch mixed with a bit of a devil’s advocate stance here, but dumb luck has played part in feeding human imagination before, right? I know its unlikely, but then again, it could happen...)
Also, I really hope that the sample brought back to earth will not reveal itself as proof of a giant Bear in the skies… (insert sounds of crickets here!)
(Ok, lame duck joke here, but please “Bear” with me for a second as I am in a very happy mood since 2020 is finally coming at an end! May 2021 bring health, delight and prosperity to all!)
All jokes asides, I really appreciate your podcast.
Thanks again and, as I like to say to my friends and family,
    Stay Safe & Stay Smart.
    See you in 2021
    :)

Mr. Krauss, i had a genuine laugh when you said holiday edition we smiled at the same time. Also i donated $5 last week. I have one question for you but it wasnt on patreon... Ive heard once before when the dinosaurs roamed Earth we were orbiting the opposite side of the galaxy. Now with this in mind I wonder if life elsewhere in the galaxy is even more likely bc perhaps the life that arrived here was in fact from when we were far off on the other side of the galaxy. What if we picked up a galcatic hitchhikers so to speak in the form of microbes or what have you. But if indeed when life arises on Earth we were in a different location that is interesting, if you can plot out where in the milky way we were at that time.

    • @TheOriginsPodcast
      @TheOriginsPodcast  3 года назад +2

Thanks.. Much appreciated! It depends.. if life was seeded here, then your argument might be relevant.. although since the relative motion of stars is random, we can't say where that seed would be now...

Its amazing to think that when you look up at the night sky and see all those stars, planets and galaxies that appear to be millions of miles away, the truth is that everything that you are looking at is actually less than ten miles away.
This is because what you are really looking at is being projected from the ceiling of the holodeck that you are in and we are all living inside a super-advanced, hyper-realistic holodeck Complex super-structure probably no bigger than the planet Jupiter.
This is proven by Emergence and Fine-Tuning. Our reality emerges as we explore it rather like a first person computer game. This quality of our reality is very compatible with our holodeck reality and not at all compatible with the more popular (but incorrect) organic scenario. In an organic scenario, the whole universe would already exist, but it doesn't.
Also, if you appreciate how the constants of our reality are perfectly fine-tuned for life (especially the mass of the neutrino) then you should appreciate that these constants must surely have been MANUALLY fine-tuned and not organically fine-tuned.
Maybe the conjunction of our two largest planets is now heralding this great news. As a species, we are now leaving the age of ignorance and are entering into the new age of enlightenment 🙏🙏🙏
