0:50 "I'm not saying you need to own 5 guitars to be a good guitar player". Of course not, that would be a stupid thing to say. You need much more than that.
I record my own music, so whenever I buy a guitar, I think of these categories, and what the guitar I want is in: 1: humbucker, conventional. Stuff like SGs, 335s, Les Pauls, PRSs, basically. They're in my opinion the most versatile, since you can play anything from the blues to grindcore, or shoegaze, or whatever it is you want. 2: single coil, conventinoal. Your strats, teles and jaguars. You just can't get that single coil bite with a humbucker, so naturally you'll want something that can deliver that kind of a tone. Guitar one or two is going to be "the one." It's a guitar that lets you play the most comfortably, and gives you your favorite tone. 3: the workhorse. Something you won't lose sleep over when it gets dinged up, and you can just throw around without worrying about it getting stolen. Mostly for gigging and rehearsing. It's the Les Paul Studio for me. 4: acoustic. Everyone needs one. It's great for songwriting and performing, especially since you can play both alone or with a band unlike an electric. 3:the "weird" one. Anything from a djent stick to a danelectro 12-string. Just something that does something crazy and weird, that allows you to express something you just can't with a regular guitar.
I would do it a little differently, but just for number 5. I would put number 5 as a bass, because sometimes you just want to be able to play stuff on a bass, and number 6 is the weird one, where I would go for a 9 string cause I live for djent.
@@doomslayer_ch4280 Oh, I made this list strictly for guitar, bass guitars were not included because those are different category altogether with a different set of criteria.
Actually, I like to think that the strat is the AR-15 of guitars. They're modular, work pretty much everytime, loved by pretty much everyone, light, and versatile.
+Buck Futter: Wow. An arrogant rich person. Y'know, 60% of American workers can't afford $1000, like if they're mother dies in a different state or something. I sometimes wonder if I'd be an arrogant twat if I wasn't disabled, but, nah.
well, he actually put them into the correct ranges - what was missing was a recommendation for beginner guitars (below 200 bucks I'd say). The 400 version was his recommendation for the first "next level" guitar - and you won't see a lot of options in that price/quality range. I liked the point about the versatility of a strat, by the way. I actually started with a 100€ strat by a no-name brand more than ten years ago. When I got better, I started replacing the parts..another neck, other pickups etc, piece by piece whenever I was able to afford something. The only thing left original is the body (which was okay from the beginning)..and I love this thing until today. I've got one or two better guitars today - But this is the guitar I'm enjoying the most. Too bad I'm just a bad player ;)
I really don't like Jaguars for some reason, just not nuts about the design. Also I cannot tell the difference between a Jaguar, A Mustang and a Jazzmaster.
For me is: #1 - *The Strat.* You know why. #2 - *Les Paul* That heavy sound and feel, you just need it. #3 - *Mustang* A short scale guitar, tuned a half step down and loaded with .10 gauge strings, sounds raw and "twangy" at the same time. Unique. #4 - *A Superstrat/Floyd Rose Guitar* Cause I know you love metal, don't try to fool me xD #5 - *Jaguar* Are you going to surf? Mine makes me feel in the 60's. Pick up a Surf Green one for extra power.
Same, I have a fender strat (I think) that was in a set that came with the amp and everything. It was only 200 bucks altogether, and the only thing I could afford 😂😭 Edit: lol it's a Squire. I didn't know the difference when I first made this comment.
It's better than nothing! Any chances to get a summer job and save some money for a better gear? :) If not possible, one day you should have more money. Until then, keep playing on what you have.
The Fender Squire “All you need to play guitar” package is probably the best starter electric guitar pack, all that for like 200$ which could be easy to get as a teenager if you have like a summer job
Yeah, I think my actual list would be something like this: 1. Something that has fairly high gain capabilities, and humbuckers. Possibly also get something with a coil split for added versatility, with two volume and two tone knobs. 2. A strat type guitar with single coils. Doesn't have to be all single coils, could be an HSS or it could be three single coils. Just so you can get more of a bluesy or strat type sound. 3. An acoustic electric with a cutaway. Recommend the cutaway for better playability, and acoustic-electric for if you actually want to use it to plug into something. If you just get those three guitars you have like 90% of your bases covered, you can cover just about anything you'd want to cover, and you could probably get all 3 for under $1,000 if you buy used.
@@ianroach8119 Got an electric jazz bass and acoustic 5 string bass for versatility in any setting Still haven’t decided on what’s really next whether it being another instrument or pursing only bass, but one thing for sure is you can never have too many basses
Yes, those 3 cover a lot and the addition of some kind of nylon string acoustic and a bass make for a bullet proof top 5. I also think that for at home guitar players at least, everyone should consider purchasing a mandolin before going for a 3rd or 4th electric.
I would replace the semi hollow with a superstrat, and a tele with a drop tuned guitar, but that's just me. I like metal, but would like to play classic stuff every once in a while
I wish you’d been consulted before this video was made! Actually the danelectro is a good call for a different flavored tone but I can’t see what I’d bump from your list to include it.
Absolutely. RUclips’s lifeblood is conjecture, opinion and ego. That being said, and as much as I love the sound of a good LesPaul in the right hands, I think a 335 can be more versatile. Opinion every day of the week!
#1 an SSS Stratocaster #2 an HSH/HSS 24-fret superstrat with Floyd #3 a 12-string #4 a Les Paul or similar #5 your perfect guitar! I’m taking “custom-made from Warmoth” perfect! Made exactly to your favourite specs! (#6 a hollow-body (interchangeable with any guitar on the list, depending on your style if you so choose to)
My list of essential guitars for rock players (in no particular order, and from my collection): 1) Fender Telecaster - that's where it all started. The working man's guitar with that classic twang. 2) Fender Strat - Fender's 2nd masterpiece. From Hendrix to Yngwie, it's versatile and timeless. 3) Gibson Les Paul - I can still hear the sustain from yesterday! Plus, no guitar screams "rock star" more. 4) PRS Custom 24 (core series) - just a masterpiece. I have never picked up a guitar that felt more natural to play. 5) Ibanez Prestige RG - super shred machine! Alternatively, any Jackson or Charvel USA made guitar, but I had to put the Prestige up front because it's an amazing value.
For ROCK and METAL players I would recommend... 1.ESP Horizon (NOT LTD...the Japanese built ESP's) in place of a Fender Strat 2.ESP Eclipse (NOT LTD...the Japanese built ESP's) in place of a Gibson Les Paul 3.Ibanez RG Prestige 4.Gibson Flying V 5.Jackson Rhoads 24 These are contemporary takes on classic guitars...aimed at metal players. Don't scold me for not including Fenders or a Les Paul. There are certain guitars that are better suited for metal players in todays era...Fender Stratocasters, Telecasters, Les Pauls, or PRS's are not the best guitars for metal anymore...there are modern takes on these classic designs that suit the rock and metal players better. ESP, Ibanez, Jackson, and Schecter are at the top of the heap today for these genres of music.
Nice list. Straight up awesome. I owned an ES335 in the early 90s and sold it in order to get a really nice Tele. Been kicking myself ever since. Hard to touch them now without lots of disposable $$.
I just can't stop preaching about ibanez guitars. Doesnt matter in which prizeclass they are what i experienced always high quality, very versitile and nice to play.
To be fair, I agree. I hate the look of the shreddy Steve-Vai looking ones but actually they're very well made. I think for my personal tastes their Artcore series is my favorite... Great guitars
"Don't we all just need one more?"... I think that's why my last GF left me. Strat, Tele, Jem, 3 6 string acoustics, 12 string ovation, a slew of old American BC Rich, a couple of Yamaha electrics.... sad thing is, I know I'm forgetting quite a few....
yeah, I had two strats, a classical by yamaha, an acoustic and an ibanez bass. Thank God my current girlfriend is a musician, she doesn't get bothered by it haha
If the girl left you because you bought another guitar she wasn't the one for you man. My girl both pushes me to buy guitars or buys me them herself. (She isn't a guitarist just watches carefully which guitars I like and choose)
My dream 5 is interesting but cool 1. Fender Telecaster 2. Fender Jag 3. Oktober Anilator (Doyle Von Frank. guitar) 4. Gibson SG 5. The first PRS he showed
Easy answer really, whatever guitars you like. I'm an SG and Stratocaster guy I dont really like les paul's, PRS guitars etc and really I dont NEED them. Now im not saying dont go out and buy different guitars if you like them, but dont make the mistake I did where I thought "ohh i need a p90 guitar, a 335, a gibson acoustic and a guild". Simply because you may only play it once for one song or a few times for years and years, then even if you do sorry to say, there is no magic tone there, you just end up sounding like yourself (I did anyway). So just make sure you like the guitar you are buying and that you will play it often. If its a cheap guitar then thats fine but if you are splashing out dough please consider how much you are going to actually play it, and if you actually like it and not because it has p90's you have to get it. You will be kicking yourself for basically having a very expensive wall feature.
That’s exactly what I was thinking the whole time watching the video. I’m not a fender guy at all. I can appreciate their legacy and versatility but I’ve never personally enjoyed playing a strat or tele. I love my PRS though. It’s all personal preference when it comes down to it.
Well put. You like what you like, even if it's only one thing. Don't get something just because you feel like you should. You won't end up using it. And besides, these days, with the nearly endless array of guitar, amp, and pick-up configurations available, you can make anything sound like anything anyway. So play what you like. It's also worth noting that what you're into can change over time. For years, I wasn't an SG guy (I had owned a few, but I always ended up selling them), and one day, I found a used one, and it just clicked. I now play that guitar more than my LPs, and if you had told me even a year or two ago that that would happen, I would have said no way.
My personal opinion: #1: Jazzmaster (sound) #2: Stratocaster (cult) #3: Flying V (show) #4: Les Paul (feeling) #5: an acoustic guitar, Fender or Martin or sth. like that (difference)
Dean Zelinsky StrettaVita /show and feeling Gibson SG /nostalgic and sound Ibanez RGD /sound and playability Jackson King V /show and freedom Relish Mery One /pretty much all you need Lava ME2 /funny acoustic touch
really depends on what styles of music you want to play eg punk blues rock country = a telecaster will be pretty good,, rock blues anything else = a strat,, heavy rock metal a gibson lp or sg or ibanez rg ...... but to be honest you can play any style on any guitar so my advice is to try as many as you can and pick whatever not only sounds best to you ( sound can be modded by pedals ) but what feels best ,, if you lift a guitar and it feels easy to play ,, buy it ,,you can swap out pickups ,, mim strats and teles are less than $500 new and are good............. also consider good condition 2nd hand gear ,,,, hope this helps a bit
haha! :) So does that mean that having a hard-tail is far superior to having the strat's floating trem and comfy forearm contour and tummy cut? More sustain than a strat?
I have a American Special Strat, blacked outed with the HSS setup (humbucker bridge, two single coils), first expensive guitar i ever owned, it was a big purchase for me since the guitar I had at the time was a jay turser strat copy that wasn't brilliant. I went into the guitar store that I usually got to a little awhile ago and put away a daphne blue Vintera strat, played it. Loved it but said no, next day I called back and put it on lay away lol, not payed off yet but I love my strats. I also have a Billie joe Armstrong replica Squier strat with a Seymore Duncan SH4 JB pickup in it with a maple neck and it sounds absolutely deadly
Five “electric” guitars. Here, I was thinking he was going to go into more general terms. For instance, every guitar player should have a classical, acoustic, or extended range guitar.
danmar007 - to give him his due, he has lots of core models but admits the green 245 is the one guitar he really bonds with the most. That's just the honesty of any guitar player.
I've been playing since 82'. I've owned just about every major brand of guitar over the years. I can safely say my top 5 were my least expensive guitars. I've really learned that you don't have to spend thousands on a great guitar. Guitarcenterused.com etc love me. I buy mine super cheap and build them up. Most guitars can come alive with just little changes. Proper set ups, maybe upgraded pups, or a upgraded bridge etc.
Awesome video, as usual. My needs are a little different though. As a non rock star working musician who needs to keep working, I need to cover a wide spectrum of sounds. My recommendation are as follows 1- Fender Telecaster. Much more versatile than a Strat IF you know what a tone knob is. My main is a custom build specked after a late 50's tele. 2- Fender Strat. Stuff comes close, but nothing sounds quite like a Strat in the "in between" positions. Again, my main is a custom build that's a copy of an original I owned when you could afford to own and work with originals. 3- Gibson Les Paul. I have a 2007 classic that's my main, but really any humbucker with a maple cap will do. I also use slightly under wound pickups in my Les Pauls. I like the way the highs sparkle with them. 4- Gibson SG. I find it just different enough to warrant owning one along with a Paul. Again, I'm not using stock pickups but customs that are slightly under wound compared to the modern stuff. The year is 2007 on my main. I like the necks from that year. 5- Gibson 335 or 345. I like both. I own a 335 but I like the varitone switch on the 345. A producer I worked with had a vintage 345 and really got me in to them. Stock Gibson pickups in this one. I only own one 335 but I'd love to pick up a 345TD in the future. I also have two acoustic steel strings, an Eastman E10D and P, and other instruments as well like a lap steel and some mandolins. There's also a few more Starts and Tele's and Paul's floating around, but those 5 are my mains. It's interesting to read theses posts and see how Subjective it all is. Everything in my post reflects the needs of my circumstances and should certainly be taken with as much salt as needed.
Those are some great recommendations. In addition to good selection of guitars, I think that every guitar player should own at least one bass. Do it....you wont regret it.
Protip: You don't need 5 guitars. You don't need to be a jazz-blues-rock-metal-country guitarist. Just focus on the one genre and guitar you like the best
Unfortunantely, the best guitar I ever played was the special fender telecaster. It had a thick lacquer neck and two single coils and a humbucker. Of course i didn't have the money for it. By the time I had the money, it was gone. Ended up buying a Les Paul T, which is pretty damn good too
That would be a Modern Player Telecaster. I own one and it's awesome. The p/u's are great as you can dial in dozens of tones. The neck is fantastic. The run under $400 on Reverb.
I agree. If you can afford 5 guitars and one isn't a 335 or 339 style semi-hollow, what are you even doing? They're super versatile and look great. I don't know why you'd have 2 guitars of the same brand on a list like this, much less 2 PRS guitars. And he chose a danelectro with a strat style body? What about a '59? Or a baritone?
Darm0k i got 13 guitars and none of them are even remotely related to gibson, its all taste. He is just saying this according to his taste. Its mostly over the top consumerism. Some guitarist just need their 1952 fender duo sonic and an old tweed amp
No hollowbody's in a 5 guitar list? I'm out i would expect: a ES175, a Tele, a 335, a guitar with whammy bar (strat was my pic), and maybe a goldtop with p90's
Here's my top 5, along with the reasons why you need them: 1: Strat (you *obviously* need a Strat; case closed!) 2: Les Paul (you also MUST have a Les Paul, Gibson or Epiphone; end of discussion!) 3: Some kind of Super Strat with a locking tremolo (I have a Schecter Sun Valley Super Shredder but you can get an Ibanez RG, an ESP M-II, a Kramer Pacer; whichever's your cup of tea. This one is for your inner metalhead... or if you're playing at an 80's-themed event.) 4: Some kind of hollow/semi-hollow guitar (I got a Fender Modern Player Starcaster, you can get an Epiphone Dot, Casino or Rivera, an Ibanez As-123, a Gibson ES-335; whatever you like best. One of these is *essential* for crystal-clean Jazz or slow power ballads.) And 5: Some kind of crazy-shaped guitar (my favorites are the Gibson Explorer, the Schecter Avenger & Synyster Gates model, the Jackson Rhoads and the Carvin V220 but once again, you can choose whichever crazy-shaped guitar you like best. Why would you need something like this? Sometimes you're gonna wanna stand out onstage; what better way to do that than with a crazy-looking axe!) Also, honorable mention: Some kind of 7-string (this one's only an honorable mention because I understand not everyone needs a 7-string; they are fun though.)
I would pick the PRS CE over the S2... I just like the sound of the bolt-on, and it's more American-made than the S2 while being way cheaper than a Core model. As a noob, I'm happy with my PRS SE Custom 24 and all its Chinese-made glory. ;)
My issue with the CE is the thin neck. I like the neck on the S2 much better. Also the S2 line has a nice variety of guitars, with the CE you only have one choice, the CE. Speaking of "choice" If the the CE is a bolt-on then they should offer a choice of neck profiles.
My wallet didn't need this video........... But I really want to get into PRS super badly. Tyler truly does on his own make them sound like an ultimate masterpiece!
1. Fender Stratocaster (American Special) 2. Ernie Ball Music man (Van Halen signatures) Floyd rose whammy bar setup. 3. Gibson Les Paul (Made before 1980) 4. PRS SC-245 5. Another Fender Stratocaster (With a humbucker pickup on the treble pickup.)
I'm waiting for my ordered Ric 381/12v69! I've been waiting for over a year, but that's cool; gave me a chance to save up the conkers! I just love playing my Ric 350v63 through my Vox AC15; WHAT A SWEET SOUND!
I have an '84 rick 330 that I've owned since 1990. It's brilliant, and is the one thing I own that I'd run into a burning building to save! I sold a Jap Squier Strat and a mid 60s Eko semi to get it and while I've bought and sold other guitars since (Fender Jazzmaster, Telecaster, Gordon Smith, Hofner Verythin, Dean Sarasota) I will always hang on to the Ric. It's more versatile than people say, metal is the only thing it really can't do as the pickups aren't high gain enough for full on shredding, and the lack of tremolo arm if such a thing is important (I haven't tried but suspect it doesn't djent). I'm primarily an indie rocker from my youth, but I've played blues, funk, jazz, reggae, country, lead and rhythm with it, including a passable Santana impression at a local pub jam. A lot of Rics, like Gibsons and PRS's, are wallhangers for lawyers and doctors, but not mine, it's got 3 decades of bumps, scratches, chips and fret-wear to prove it. The only downside is a refret, which my guitar seriously needs, costs a fortune because of the heavily lacquered fingerboard. Still can't figure out the point of that stupid 5th knob though.
Bought a 1971 Rickenbacker 360/6 delux new back in the day, it's covered virtually every genre of music I've played over 45 years or so, save for metal... Newer ones I don't think have like the older ones, mine has the early Hi Gain pick ups...
When I was a 7 yr old kid i played a chinese strat imitation. When I was 10, my dad bought me a Gibson SGJ 2014, which I use everyday. It wasn't really expensive, but levelled me up massively. Like 4 months ago I realised I have ENOUGh money to buy a strat. I found one on OLX which was a mexican 2018 strat. It was in a Lombard. I bought it, it's polar white finish. It's just GREAT. I first wanted to play u2 on it, but Hendrix, John Mayer AND practice routine won. With my SG and my strat I'm the happiest pearson living.
You seem a bit one sided. Have you ever tried playing an sg? Their my favorite guitars and I think their overlooked a lot. Y'all should give the Gibson sg a try
Im doing this cheap (ish) list: 1. Godin Session LTD 2. G&L Tribute Asat Classic Hollow 3. Hagstrom Super Swede with Pearly Gates 4. Guild S-100 Polara with Saturday Night Specia 5. SBMM Stingray guitar or some sort of Jazzmaster/Jaguar, maybe G&L doheny?
A few comments, and I get guitars are personal things and taste is unique but.... you don't need an acoustic guitar? I just don't get 7 string guitars your strat was $100,000.00........think you got ripped off bro I've been to a PRS talk, sounds like you have too
I only have 2 guitars. My DG-9 acoustic guitar I got from a friend and his family for Christmas 18 years ago and my 1968 Thin Line Telecaster Squier by Fender that I bought 10 years ago for $350. I'm happy with what I got and don't believe I need anymore. They both get alot of use and that's all I need.
I started out playing in a Squier mini strat, then I got a Jay Turser (keeping the Squier since it was my first guitar) then I got a full on American Special strat blacked out high gloss with a humbucker, (sold the Jay later as I put it on a new Amp that I still use as my primary) afterwards I bought a full size Squier strat and did a replica of Billie Joe Armstrong guitar (green day). Recently I finished paying off and took home my Fender Vintera 50s modified strat, beautiful guitar and my first full size strat with all single coils. I do have other guitars but as you can tell I'm a bit of a strat addict, though I am looking into maybe getting a Tele at some point
I wouldn't buy any of those (except maybe the Danelectro) for various reasons (don't like single-cuts, sharp edges on body, lack of arm carve, volume knob too close to pickup, overpriced, badunkadunk too big (PRS S2), etc.). Give me a Tele, a SuperStrat (Charvel San Dimas, Jackson Dinky Pro, etc.) and a Strat with the volume knob moved away from the pickup.
Based on over forty years of experience playing in bands, worship services, and as a solo artist, if you want to be a well-rounded guitar player with a versatile arsenal, I would recommend the following (with my personal guitars in parentheses): 1. A quality steel string acoustic with solid wood construction. (Gibson J45 and CL20) 2. A quality nylon string acoustic with solid wood construction. (Ibanez AE 450) 3. A solid body humbucker electric. (Gibson Les Paul and SG) 4. A single coil electric. (Fender Strat and Tele) 5. A hollow-body, or semi-hollowbody, electric. (Gretsch 5120 and Epiphone Wildkat Royale) I have my favorite brands, but there are so many good manufacturers these days that it's hard to go wrong if you buy from a reputable dealer. No amount of money spent on an electric guitar will make up for a crappy amp, but a good amp will help a mediocre guitar sound a LOT better.
depends on half of WHAT guitar you can afford.. Half a Gibson Les Paul? Get an Epiphany Les Paul and swap the pickups and still save money!! Probably have better fret work since Gibson sucks now
Save the money, meanwhile study the music theory, staff notations, etc. when you have enough money, just get a well built guitar, no need for any expensive stuff, I'll suggest go for a used one if you can. If its not setup properly check with any local luthier and get it done at an affordable rate. And get a good parametric eq pedal if you can before going for an amp.

I record my own music, so whenever I buy a guitar, I think of these categories, and what the guitar I want is in:
1: humbucker, conventional.
For the 5th one, a bass guitar would fit in nicely.
@@cadentannery4626 ehhhhhhhhhh idk about that bud

I would do it a little differently, but just for number 5. I would put number 5 as a bass, because sometimes you just want to be able to play stuff on a bass, and number 6 is the weird one, where I would go for a 9 string cause I live for djent.
@@doomslayer_ch4280 Oh, I made this list strictly for guitar, bass guitars were not included because those are different category altogether with a different set of criteria.

Actually, I like to think that the strat is the AR-15 of guitars. They're modular, work pretty much everytime, loved by pretty much everyone, light, and versatile.

Tele gets the job done + don't like how strats look

The 5 guitars every guitarist can’t afford
You can't afford $500 for a guitar? you will be able to when you get out of school and get a job
i actually bought my prs 24 custom se for like what.. 300 i think it was
Most of those are pretty cheap guitars.

What about tele
For me is:
#1 - *The Strat.*
You know why.
#2 - *Les Paul*
That heavy sound and feel, you just need it.
#3 - *Mustang*
A short scale guitar, tuned a half step down and loaded with .10 gauge strings, sounds raw and "twangy" at the same time. Unique.
#4 - *A Superstrat/Floyd Rose Guitar*
Cause I know you love metal, don't try to fool me xD

being a teenage guitarist sucks, i cant afford anything lmao edit: got a summer job and bought a prs se tremonti and blackstar core v3, life is good
Same, I have a fender strat (I think) that was in a set that came with the amp and everything. It was only 200 bucks altogether, and the only thing I could afford 😂😭
Edit: lol it's a Squire.

@@samanderson6079 i have and its fucking glorious
Yeah, I think my actual list would be something like this:
Almost all the bases, now you just need a bass.
@@ianroach8119 Got an electric jazz bass and acoustic 5 string bass for versatility in any setting
Still haven’t decided on what’s really next whether it being another instrument or pursing only bass, but one thing for sure is you can never have too many basses
I am old school. The first guitar any guitarist needs is an acoustic. Hands down. After that, a strat, Les paul, and a Telecaster. Just my opinion.
Yes, those 3 cover a lot and the addition of some kind of nylon string acoustic and a bass make for a bullet proof top 5. I also think that for at home guitar players at least, everyone should consider purchasing a mandolin before going for a 3rd or 4th electric.
I haven't watched yet... I'd say
1) Strat
2) Les Paul
3) Tele
4) ES/Semi Hollow
5) Acoustic
Would have made sense.
I'd say the only one from my 5 that I think isn't fully deserving of the spot is the ES/Semi Hollow. It's all opinion at the end of the day
Absolutely. RUclips’s lifeblood is conjecture, opinion and ego. That being said, and as much as I love the sound of a good LesPaul in the right hands, I think a 335 can be more versatile.
Opinion every day of the week!
I would say (no particular order)
Strat , Les Paul, tele, semi hollow, acoustic.
You're right! 🤙
Hell yea
spot on
2 strats, les Paul, tele, epi Sheraton II, Martin, great minds think alike.
Yes, definitely more on point than his choices. A selmer if you want to have a good gypsy sound. Maybe a dobro and a lap steel as well.
#1 an SSS Stratocaster
#2 an HSH/HSS 24-fret superstrat with Floyd
#3 a 12-string
#4 a Les Paul or similar
#5 your perfect guitar! I’m taking “custom-made from Warmoth” perfect! Made exactly to your favourite specs!
(#6 a hollow-body (interchangeable with any guitar on the list, depending on your style if you so choose to)
My list of essential guitars for rock players (in no particular order, and from my collection):
1) Fender Telecaster - that's where it all started.
Perfect, this is actually the top 5 i'd recommend
I think I would change either the Ibanez or the PRS for some sort of semi hollow or hollowbody just to diversify your playing a bit
This is so true^ but I’d add a gretsch hollowbody or a semi like a 335 instead of the Ibanez
For ROCK and METAL players I would recommend...
1.ESP Horizon (NOT LTD...the Japanese built ESP's) in place of a Fender Strat
2.ESP Eclipse (NOT LTD...the Japanese built ESP's) in place of a Gibson Les Paul
3.Ibanez RG Prestige
4.Gibson Flying V
5.Jackson Rhoads 24
These are contemporary takes on classic guitars...aimed at metal players.
Right on!
No particular order
1. Some sort of versatile prs like the first one he showed
2. Stratocaster
3.telecaster
4. Gibson 335
5. Les Paul
That's about the most reasonable list out there. No bias.

Couldn't agree with you more
I find the weird shredder neck a bit annoying, prs or strat all the way for me.

First sensible response I've seen in this sea of brand/ model fan boys.
I now play that guitar more than my LPs, and if you had told me even a year or two ago that that would happen, I would have said no way.

really depends on what styles of music you want to play eg punk blues rock country = a telecaster will be pretty good,, rock blues anything else = a strat,, heavy rock metal a gibson lp or sg or ibanez rg ...... but to be honest you can play any style on any guitar so my advice is to try as many as you can and pick whatever not only sounds best to you ( sound can be modded by pedals ) but what feels best ,, if you lift a guitar and it feels easy to play ,, buy it ,,you can swap out pickups ,,
mim strats and teles are less than $500 new and are good............. also consider good condition 2nd hand gear ,,,, hope this helps a bit

SRV TheSheep hahahah thats right
I've been playing since 82'.
Seriously.
I’ve bought a bunch of used stuff. You really have to look at it carefully, but if you know what you’re doing, Craigslist can be your best friend.
Poor tele, getting left out in everything
Awesome video, as usual. My needs are a little different though. As a non rock star working musician who needs to keep working, I need to cover a wide spectrum of sounds. My recommendation are as follows
1- Fender Telecaster.
This is my exact same list, but just in a little bit different order
Those are some great recommendations. In addition to good selection of guitars, I think that every guitar player should own at least one bass. Do it....you wont regret it.

Semi hollow? Floyd rose?
or P90's???

Jazz player?
Here's my top 5, along with the reasons why you need them:
1: Strat (you *obviously* need a Strat; case closed!)
2: Les Paul (you also MUST have a Les Paul, Gibson or Epiphone; end of discussion!)
3: Some kind of Super Strat with a locking tremolo (I have a Schecter Sun Valley Super Shredder but you can get an Ibanez RG, an ESP M-II, a Kramer Pacer; whichever's your cup of tea. This one is for your inner metalhead... or if you're playing at an 80's-themed event.)
4: Some kind of hollow/semi-hollow guitar (I got a Fender Modern Player Starcaster, you can get an Epiphone Dot, Casino or Rivera, an Ibanez As-123, a Gibson ES-335; whatever you like best. One of these is *essential* for crystal-clean Jazz or slow power ballads.)
And 5: Some kind of crazy-shaped guitar (my favorites are the Gibson Explorer, the Schecter Avenger & Synyster Gates model, the Jackson Rhoads and the Carvin V220 but once again, you can choose whichever crazy-shaped guitar you like best. Why would you need something like this? Sometimes you're gonna wanna stand out onstage; what better way to do that than with a crazy-looking axe!)
Also, honorable mention: Some kind of 7-string (this one's only an honorable mention because I understand not everyone needs a 7-string; they are fun though.)
I would pick the PRS CE over the S2... I just like the sound of the bolt-on, and it's more American-made than the S2 while being way cheaper than a Core model. As a noob, I'm happy with my PRS SE Custom 24 and all its Chinese-made glory. ;)
Rob G the SE Custom 24 is Korean. PRS have never made Chinese guitars from what I know
yes is korean, the quality is pretty good even if not usa.
RC32 He speaks truth. Prs s2s feel just as good as higher priced models. They are great.
Ahh ye! Would like to own one someday!
1. Fender Stratocaster (American Special)
2. Ernie Ball Music man (Van Halen signatures) Floyd rose whammy bar setup.
3. Gibson Les Paul (Made before 1980)
4. PRS SC-245
5. Another Fender Stratocaster (With a humbucker pickup on the treble pickup.)
Rickenbacker? Just saying because I'm saving for a new guitar, and rickenbackers are some of the ones I've been looking at.
Rickenbackers are sick.lots of cool cats played them i wanted to say iron butterfly but they played something different
I'm waiting for my ordered Ric 381/12v69! I've been waiting for over a year, but that's cool; gave me a chance to save up the conkers! I just love playing my Ric 350v63 through my Vox AC15; WHAT A SWEET SOUND!
Michael Evans
That's amazing, enjoy the Ric's!
Newer ones I don't think have like the older ones, mine has the early Hi Gain pick ups...
don’t you mean ‘the n+1 amount of guitars a guitarist needs’
Sir Henners I found the cs guy
Could be a mathematician
or physicist, etc.
Let's just say we found the scientist/engineer
Im doing this cheap (ish) list:
1. Godin Session LTD
2. G&L Tribute Asat Classic Hollow
3. Hagstrom Super Swede with Pearly Gates
4. Guild S-100 Polara with Saturday Night Specia
5. SBMM Stingray guitar or some sort of Jazzmaster/Jaguar, maybe G&L doheny?
I feel like to cover the most tonal possibilities:
1. HSS Strat
I’d argue you could cover all those bases with just the HSS Strat or (if you’re cool without the trem) the tele
A few comments, and I get guitars are personal things and taste is unique but....
you don't need an acoustic guitar?
I just don't get 7 string guitars
your strat was $100,000.00........think you got ripped off bro
I've been to a PRS talk, sounds like you have too
The Music man has piezo's so no acoustic needed I guess.
His strat was under 1000$?
Lord knows I'm a Voodoo Child!

The 5 Guitars Every wealthy Guitarist Needs and can get without even thinking of price.
The prs se standard has a great price and sounds great.
The five guitars every guitarist needs: PRS #1, PRS #2, PRS #3, PRS #4, PRS #5
lol, edited now!
I own 6....! This one goes to 11 concept.
Not one PMS in my collection. Maybe some day, but not now....
Sorry to nit-pick but teles are also single cuts
Still love 'em though
Boi strats are good for tge price
You can get a squier strat for like 200 to 300 aussie dollars
1. Air Guitar
2. Cheap knockoff guitar
3. More money
Based on a true story
Based on over forty years of experience playing in bands, worship services, and as a solo artist, if you want to be a well-rounded guitar player with a versatile arsenal, I would recommend the following (with my personal guitars in parentheses):
1. A quality steel string acoustic with solid wood construction. (Gibson J45 and CL20)
2. A quality nylon string acoustic with solid wood construction. (Ibanez AE 450)
3. A solid body humbucker electric. (Gibson Les Paul and SG)
4. A single coil electric. (Fender Strat and Tele)
5. A hollow-body, or semi-hollowbody, electric. (Gretsch 5120 and Epiphone Wildkat Royale)
I have my favorite brands, but there are so many good manufacturers these days that it's hard to go wrong if you buy from a reputable dealer. No amount of money spent on an electric guitar will make up for a crappy amp, but a good amp will help a mediocre guitar sound a LOT better.
I think this would be my top 5 of essential guitars ...
1- Jazzmaster.
2- Stratocaster.
3- Duesenberg Starplayer TV.
4- Telecaster.
5- Martin HD-28E.
Ibanez RG x 5
If they're not extended range i wont touch those lol.
Rg gang
Dylan Lemke what about the new genesis series 😏😉
Does them Djent though?
Yes
1) SG
2) Tele
3) Ibanez hollowbody
4) Jackson Dinky
5) Strat
In my humble opinion
I only need one guitar......... the next one!!!
What’s if you can only afford half a guitar?
Treble yourself no more - it's all about that bass.
PineapplePrince with 3 strings, but yeah, essentially.
I would aim for a 12 string then
depends on half of WHAT guitar you can afford..
1) PRS SE Custom 24
2) PRS SE 277 Baritone
3) A keyboard. Very useful, even when you don't think you'll need one, it comes in handy a lot!
1. Explorer
2. Tele
3. Strat
4. Nylon string
5. Acoustic
