Wyoming native here, and Chris was a Wyoming cowboy through and through. If you liked this song you should check out "The Lady is Dancing with Me" or "The Cowboy and Hippie". I don't think they got much airplay but they are great story telling songs. It was interesting to see Alexis close her eyes and visualize a 'black tornado across a western sky' the lyrics and the music paint such a picture that you can't resist a quick look into your imagination to see what that might be like. And the message is so powerful even today. Sit down with someone you think is so much different than yourself, have a genuine interactive visit and you will probably find some common ground somewhere. Then we can live and let live, realizing that lives and experiences tend to intertwine allowing us to be respectful instead of spiteful. Thanks for the review.....My husband, Jake Brooks from Portales NM wrote the song in Las Cruces NM when he was attending New Mexico State. It's based on a true story. Chris Ledoux was a REAL cowboy and an awesome person. Jake had some other songs that Chris recorded. Chris' son Ned has recently recorded the song and he has also done a great job with it. Chris Ledoux is a legend that will never be forgotten. He is nothing like Garth. Chris was a genuine Cowboy and lived the life. Had the pleasure to see him live five times and to this day is one of the greatest I have ever seen live.
Saw Chris play at the Tumbleweed in Stillwater, OK many times. Great showman and great guy. I remember an interview with him once and the interviewed asked him what it was like going from a rodeo cowboy to famous. Chris chuckled and said the closest he would ever be to famous was having his name mentioned in a Garth Brooks song.
Truly enjoy listening to Chris LeDoux. The way he painted a picture in your mind is amazing. He has so many good songs it's hard to pick a favorite. Hope you go through more of his music.
Back in 2000 I was doing archaeology field school with UNDAK in Mandan/Bismark. Our camp became a major cowboy drinking hangout. One of the cowboys told us about Ledux, and how he would ride bareback bronc in the rodeo and then perform afterwards. He said the shoes were kiss like, with mechanical bull and flames and fireworks, cutting Garth was influenced by his music and stage show. One night the cowboy invited us to the rodeo, and tells us Ledux was playing, this is way after he quit riding. I've seen original kiss and his show was every bit entertaining. One I'll never forget. Later we weren't to the local bar 'The Lonesome Dove, where nobody left alone' where all the riders were hanging out and there was Ledux holding court amid all the younger riders.
Another great Ledoux song is Western Skies. You would enjoy it. Chris was the 1976 bareback bronc champion at NFR, riding Stormy Weather, wearing an arm brace his wife made for him since his arm was injured. RIP cowboy. The best eulogy I ever heard about Chris was from George Strait, who just said, "Chris was the real deal."
Have you watched any of his live performances? His performance are filled with energy, showmanship and Garth took a lot of those cues and put them in his own shows as a homage to Chris. Chris was a very accomplished bronze statue artist along with being a world champion bronc rider.
Thank you for this review. My aunt rode on the Casper College rodeo team with Chris LeDoux. (Her best friend owns the ranch next door to his in Kaycee, Wyo.) I've been a fan since I was a baby in 1973. I've only seen him in concert once but I've spoken to him on the phone twice. He called me when I was in the hospital in 1990. He was a real man, a totally authentic cowboy, rodeo champ, a true original and a great American hero. His music has taught me more about what it means to be a good man than my father ever did--more than any man, really. Although I love all of his music, Songbook of the American West (1976) is my favorite album. If you like the storytelling, check out Double Diamond, Johnson County War, Little Joe the Wrangler and Photo Finish. Just to name a few. God bless Christ LeDoux.

Got to meet him once and offered to buy him a beer but he didn't drink. The only place you could get his music when i was a kid was at the feed lot. Now that Alexis knows his name she will be surprised how many times his name comes up in other artist's songs. Cody Johnson even talks about wanting to be like him when he first started in music. One of the best performers I've ever seen. And nothing but a regular cowboy on his days off. RIP Chris. you left this world much too early, I'm sure you still had a lot of songs left in you.

As someone who grew up on the Colorado plains, can confirm that everything he did just exemplifies the attitudes of the farmers and ranchers of that area of the country. All the diversity is a part of who the people are, what the culture is, etc. That includes the stuff he did in the 70s (both classic and original songs) all the way through to his death. Everything from the whimsical like "Cowboy Songs" and "Photo Finish" to classics like "Strawberry Roan" and "Night Rider's Lament" and the rather undefinable - "Stampede", "Copenhagen", Hairtrigger Colt's 44, Powder River Home, Just Can't See Him From the Road... It's all there. So glad Alexis was introduced to him, and hope she explores his stuff more!

If you want a song where he sings more but he still has his signature story telling you should check out his song “Rusty Spurs”. 🙏 Anytime I’m at a rodeo or a practice, I like to play that song and it makes me feel like I’m in a whole other world. Chris was the real deal. He was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, in a military family. He learned to ride a horse on his grandfather's ranch in Wyoming. And he went on to become a world champion bronc rider, before his music career. And from what I know of him, he was just a decent guy.
I was listening to Chris before Garth mentioned him in his songs. I originally thought it cute one of my new favorite artists was paying homage to an earlier great. That being said, one thing I love to do is point out just what the chorus of this song is saying. These are all impossible tasks. "You'll ride a black tornado 'cross the western sky And rope an old Blue Northern, and milk it 'til it's dry Bulldog the Mississippi, pin its ears down flat Long before you take this cowboy's hat" "You'll ride a black tornado..." He's talking about a tornado that is so powerful it has sucked enough material up off the ground to turn a normally white / light grey weather event black. This is an EF4 to EF5 tornado, a level of tornado that wipes entire small towns off the face of the Earth. You think you can ride that? "Rope an old Blue Northern..." A "Blue Northern" is a summer weather event where a Canadian cold front dips south across the American Plains causing a plummet in the ambient temp of up to 30F and major storms across the region. This weather event leads to major thunderstorms including sleet, hail, and sometimes a black tornado. The worst result in Derechos that stretch hundreds of miles and produce dozens of black tornadoes. Bulldog the Mississippi, pin it's ears down flat..." Bulldogging is when a rodeo cowboy wrestles a steer into submission and ties three of its four legs together. Then of course there is the "pin it's ears down flat"... I have lived along many a river. Never seen any that had legs or ears.

What I always loved about Chris's music is you have to have an understanding about the cowboy life to actually understand what he's singing about. It's not just dirt roads, beer, and a truck. It was real life the way a country song is meant to be
Chris and Garth were best friends. Several years after Chris's death, Garth released a song called "Good Ride" that was a memorial song to Chris. Chris lived what he sang and sang what he lived.
It was less than two weeks I predicted he'd release what is good ride within a month he did it in two weeks I still remember the car ride on the way home from port Aransas when they announced it

I've been listening to Chris since the 70s, he even gave me an 8 trac tape of his in 77 and his music was a big part of my life while Rodeoing in 70s and 80s. My first date with my to be wife was a Chris Ledoux concert we danced to Just Look At You Girl at our wedding, she passed away from Cancer in 2005 and I buried her the day Chris passed away, he has been a big part of my life and I love seeing young people introduced to his music. That was my wife and I wedding song, I sang it to her as we danced, she cried and the guest asked me to sing again so I followed it up with shot full of love and as requested by my wife copperhead road.

He was genuine. Met him at a high school rodeo in Thermopolis. He took 30 minutes out of his day to talk to a $800 a month cowboy who got a day off to work the stripping chute at a high school rodeo. Definitely a highlight for me
Such eerily similar tastes in music. I believe we are close to the same age and that might explain one genre of like music tastes but liking the same music from rock to country. I haven't found too many people like that. I'm 54. Thanks Burch for bringing this one.
I saw his son Ned in concert back a few months ago, WOW! Sounds just like his dad! Even does this song and a few others of his dad's! Great show and even got to meet him and got my cowboy hat signed. I got introduced to Chris LeDoux in early 90's, when i was a DJ for a spell, and had my DJ business. I am not a country boy. But i do love Chris LeDoux. His son is very good as well.
Chris Ledoux was a big influence on Garth Brooks. So Garth sounds alot like Chris. Ex. Garth song "Much too Young to feel this damn old" the line is " a worn out tape of Chris Ledoux, lonely women and bad booze, seem to be the only friends I have left at all."
I live in Buffalo, Wyoming and Chris's ranch is south of here in a small town named Kaycee, Wyoming. In Kaycee, there is a memorial park dedicated to Chris. It has a statue of him riding a bronc, as he did in rodeos. The town is small but is a nice place to visit. Every year they put on Chris LeDoux Days. I think he passed away in 2006 due to a rare form of cancer. RIP Chris.

His second best song by all of the true Chris fans. #1 is Hooked on an 8 second ride. This is a very close second to the point where most would interchange both. That’s how both are that good.Chris did it the old fashioned way. Made his own tapes and sold them at rodeos. As far as Garth Brooks? If it weren’t for Chris, Garth would have just been another local country artist. Garth even said so in an interview that if it wasn’t for Chris, he wouldn’t be where he is today.

If it wasn’t for Chris Ledoux Garth Brooks wouldn’t be who he is. Garth loved the energy Chris put in his shows and incorporated it into his shows. I got to see Chris perform before he died and it was amazing. Garth didn’t copy Chris’s work entirely cause there’s something Chris had that Garth hasn’t figured out. Garth is a great businessman which is why he’s so popular. He knows what sells and how to sell music.
Few people know about Chris , I met him when I was in the Marines stationed in Calif. We both rode the same rodeo , he was riding bare back broncs that day and I was riding bulls. Great memories .😊
Chris won the 1976 world championship in professional rodeo in bronc riding. I was rodeoing in HS and met Chris at the Days of 47 rodeo in Salt Lake City. Amazing gentleman, great cowboy, and the pride of Kaycee, Wyoming. Big influence on Garth Brooks, but sang Bang a drum with Jon Bon Jovi, cut Bruce Springsteen's Tougher than the rest. RIP Chris you left way to soon.

Chris and Garth were best friends. Several years after Chris's death, Garth released a song called "Good Ride" that was a memorial song to Chris. Chris lived what he sang and sang what he lived.
It was less than two weeks I predicted he'd release what is good ride within a month he did it in two weeks I still remember the car ride on the way home from port Aransas when they announced it

I've been listening to Chris since the 70s, he even gave me an 8 trac tape of his in 77 and his music was a big part of my life while Rodeoing in 70s and 80s. My first date with my to be wife was a Chris Ledoux concert we danced to Just Look At You Girl at our wedding, she passed away from Cancer in 2005 and I buried her the day Chris passed away, he has been a big part of my life and I love seeing young people introduced to his music. Thank you
That was my wife and I wedding song, I sang it to her as we danced, she cried and the guest asked me to sing again so I followed it up with shot full of love and as requested by my wife copperhead road.

Saw him at Paso Robles fair. So many great songs, listening all the time to his music. His son Ned has some great songs as well. Hopefully I'll get to somewhere where i can see him play someday too.
He was genuine. Met him at a high school rodeo in Thermopolis. He took 30 minutes out of his day to talk to a $800 a month cowboy who got a day off to work the stripping chute at a high school rodeo. Definitely a highlight for me
Such eerily similar tastes in music. I believe we are close to the same age and that might explain one genre of like music tastes but liking the same music from rock to country. I haven't found too many people like that. I'm 54. Thanks Burch for bringing this one.

I saw his son Ned in concert back a few months ago, WOW! Sounds just like his dad! Even does this song and a few others of his dad's! Great show and even got to meet him and got my cowboy hat signed. Well worth any Chris LeDoux fan to go see Ned in concert and check out some of his own music as well. Thanks for this one.

I got introduced to Chris LeDoux in early 90's, when i was a DJ for a spell, and had my DJ business. I am not a country boy. But i do love Chris LeDoux. His son is very good as well.
Chris Ledoux was a big influence on Garth Brooks. So Garth sounds alot like Chris. Ex. Garth song "Much too Young to feel this damn old" the line is " a worn out tape of Chris Ledoux, lonely women and bad booze, seem to be the only friends I have left at all."

I live in Buffalo, Wyoming and Chris's ranch is south of here in a small town named Kaycee, Wyoming. In Kaycee, there is a memorial park dedicated to Chris. It has a statue of him riding a bronc, as he did in rodeos. The town is small but is a nice place to visit. Every year they put on Chris LeDoux Days. I think he passed away in 2006 due to a rare form of cancer. RIP Chris.

That’s how both are that good.Chris did it the old fashioned way. Made his own tapes and sold them at rodeos. As far as Garth Brooks? If it weren’t for Chris, Garth would have just been another local country artist. Garth even said so in an interview that if it wasn’t for Chris, he wouldn’t be where he is today.

If it wasn’t for Chris Ledoux Garth Brooks wouldn’t be who he is. Garth loved the energy Chris put in his shows and incorporated it into his shows. I got to see Chris perform before he died and it was amazing. Garth didn’t copy Chris’s work entirely cause there’s something Chris had that Garth hasn’t figured out. Garth is a great businessman which is why he’s so popular. He knows what sells and how to sell music.
Few people know about Chris , I met him when I was in the Marines stationed in Calif. We both rode the same rodeo , he was riding bare back broncs that day and I was riding bulls. Great memories .😊

Chris won the 1976 world championship in professional rodeo in bronc riding. I was rodeoing in HS and met Chris at the Days of 47 rodeo in Salt Lake City. Amazing gentleman, great cowboy, and the pride of Kaycee, Wyoming. Big influence on Garth Brooks, but sang Bang a drum with Jon Bon Jovi, cut Bruce Springsteen's Tougher than the rest. RIP Chris you left way to soon.
