However, with Longlegs and the mother both dead, it is implied that the new doll and a little girl will now be subject to the devil's influence. Lee cannot destroy this new doll without disrupting the devil's plan, and thus, after attempting to shoot it the devil influences her to leave it intact.

The part that gets to me is the mom did all the horrible stuff. But in the end it meant nothing. The Devil was just playing a game to see if he could corrupt people and make them do horrible things. He used the love and care of the mother to see how far his sick game can get. And it went the furthest making the daughter shoot her mother in the end of the film. And it turns out with the doll and the gun, that the devil was always in control and nothing could stop him. The devil was just having fun messing with these church people for 20+ years. And he'll just keep doing it as long as he wants.

I still have kinda mixed feelings about the ending. I agree with the ppl who didn't like the exposition dump monologue and there were definitely some inconsistences with the rules for how the black magic worked and stuff, but the first hour or so of the movie, with the opening scene and the scenes where we get to know Lee's character, and the police procedural investigation vibes and everything, all of that stuff was so indescribably awesome to me that I barely even think about the ending tbh.
Lee Harker is probably my new favorite final girl. The idea of a socially awkward FBI agent is just chef's kiss. I laughed at her awkwardness so many times when I wasn't even supposed to, and that's not a negative critique. I just thought she was funny. I kept on imagining her inner monologue and what she was thinking in different moments when she was being awkward. I really related to her awkward character.
Honestly (and this is obviously never gonna happen), I wish we could get a series of movies with Maika Monroe as Lee Harker solving supernatural mysteries with police procedural vibes. Heck, give her a new partner who is just as awkward as she is. Make it a buddy cop movie on top of that. Or make it so that Lee unjammed her gun and shot the doll, and Carter and his wife both survived their injuries, and everything's fine, so Lee and Carter can keep working together, because their dynamic was awesome too.
    Sorry for rant

They shouldn't have done the black mist thing with the dolls. Have her mother shoot the doll and it's just a doll. Then, at the end, have Lee show up to her boss' house to find everybody dead except her mother who keeps saying "he made me do it." Leave in the spectral figures in the background as a little "is it really the devil making people do this?" but never explicitly say it. Give everybody the tease of the paranormal without actually confirming it.

I love Nic Cage as much as the next guy but unfortunately he went a bit too far in this one. Hammed it up to 135 and came off too comical to be scary. And all I could think the whole time was: That's Nic Cage, bru! And even though they didn't show much of him, it still felt like it was too much.
Movie had amazing aesthetics and good tension and was pretty well directed overall.
