- Can we really remove our background from our portraits with just one click? Yes we can! Luminar has released yet another ground breaking addition to Luminar NEO photo editor. You can get it here with a discount: bit.ly/Luminar-NEO code "ATNEO".
We'll cover the basics of the portrait background removal tool and how it can extract our subject form the background with the click of a button. Sometimes the AI needs a little helping hand and we're able to do that easily by painting roughly over our subject, the transition area, and the background in those problem areas. Luminar then figures out the mask from there. It's like magic!
Luminar Neo has been a work in progress, an evolution. And I finally feel that with this latest release it's truly living up to the high bar of expectation Skylum set for it. Well done Skylum development team, you really have excelled with this tool!

That's is a bloody brilliant idea about removing the fringing.
I believe that Skylum will also going to put in dodge and burn aswell as make your own brushes for the pre-ordered package.
Havagooday mate

Great trick for the hair! Thanks!

I want to say that the people you deal with.. with Lumina Neo are great... Also they are in Ukraine.. So it feels good to be supporting them.. get the discount code and do it!!! it is an absolute bargain..👍
Just brilliant Anthony thanks so much
Best explanation of this tool by far, and the tricks you showed to help minimize the potential fringing are great. Keep up the top content!
Great video, Anthony! We learn a lot, so please more tips & tricks!
So much thanks for your tutorials
I bought Luminar Neo last week and I've never done anything like this before. I've just replaced the back ground on a Las Vegas photo of me and a 'on the street' 'Elvis' who looked great but the background was awful. We are now in front of a BIG stretch Limo outside the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. Thanks Anthony = I've subscribed.
Tips & Tricks, yes! This is great Anthony. It changes my overall assessment of the background removal tool. Thank you!
Absolute brilliant. Thank you for sharing!
Great stuff! More tips & tricks please Anthony!
Great video. Yes, I would be interested in more tips and tricks. Thank you Anthony.

Glad you think so! Cheers Kareem!
Love your teaching style and your hacks are great. I am up for more tips and tricks!
Thanks Elisabeth!
Thanks, awesome as usual and very helpful hacks!
Useful vid, thanks 👏
Top man well explained thanks
Thanks again for a well thought out and presented video. The masking of the hair will certainly be helpful. I had not seen that before. Now if i could figure how to replace the background realistically when there is a translucent object such as a dress or fairy wings that is part of the subject but the old background keeps showing through. Thanks again to luminar for the update and I will certainly put this function through its paces.
absolutely fantastic Anthony. Thank you so much
My pleasure!
Tips and Tricks! These are awesome
Thank you for slowing down. I could actually follow you without having to change the playback speed. Great tutorial. I've used a similar approach in Canva and am glad to see it works in Neo.
Awesome, thank you Rick!
Great tips
More tips & tricks please Anthony!

Tips and Tricks? Yes, please!!!
Love your luminar neo videos, i own it and im a beginner and being better and better little by little, have learned also alot from you😉🔥
Thanks Elaax!
Wow you're awesome, my green screen software has crashed ❤️
Very helpfull
Great Anthony :-)
Great tips ! I was exporting the images as PNG and then importing into Affinity Photo to do a more detailed job. With AP, the work of masks is easier because it has, for example, the option to make a mask by automatically finding the edges, hopefully they will do it soon in Luminar Neo.
Thanks
With the dark it seems to be a lil bit too complicated to me😅
Hi Sir, I enjoy your tutorials in Luminar. I would like to ask if you can make a tutorial for double exposure. I'm looking forward for it. Thank you in advance ☺️
Nice

perfect
I wish Luminar would match the portrait with (the lighting and colour) of the new background automatically with the help of AI. Luminar already does a similar thing in sky replacement. They should incorporate that algorithm into this workflow.
Love your sense of humour and as always great video 👍🏽
Excellent walkthrough Anthony - great tips too!!
When Skylum says this is now complete, I do hope they mean just the new AI tools because it is far from complete as far as other stuff is concerned. No Dogde and Burn, no Clone and Stamp, no supporting plug ins such as Aurora, Topaz's DeNoise AI and Sharpen AI - these are all available in L4 and it would be a disappointment if all these tools were not added. Any idea if Sklum plan to bring in these basic...but very necessary... photo editing tools?
Hi Nigel. I don't know but, yes, it would be a big shame if we don't see clone + stamp, and the plugin functionamity you mentioned.
LOL. Luminar NEO/Ai is ridiculously good value at the price point. And you actually get the license. No subscription necessary. Other tools do what you want, but you have to pay for it. For me, I'm quite happy with what we get at the price they charge. And thank goodness for these videos, because they are top-notch tutorials using Luminar. They should seriously be paying this dude.
@@jeffcanar7294 NEO is a good price...as was L4, but any photo eding worth it's salt will have D&B and Clone&Stamp as built in tools. NEO should also have the ability to plug in Aurora (which after all is there own program!) and the others I mentioned. Luminar 4 has all of them so it shouldn't be to difficult to migrate them over. Not a "LOL" comment - just fact and reality

Hi there. Great tutorial. Appreciate for this one. One question: how to remove a white line around my subject after adding a new background. Sorry about that 😉 it’s probably very easy but I can’t figure out.
Tips and Tricks
This is great. However with a Mac, I can't seem to make it allow me to export the image with a transparent background by right clicking. Any insights how to export with the transparent background either as a Tif or PNG file? Thank you.

Am interested
does the foreground change the colour to match the background automatically?
tips and tricks
Anth just what was looking for to put extra people in my photo s can u do more in-depth video as I learn very slowly buddy if you have time cheers.
Interesting video. Can you use the "remove background" on birds and animals to make your own layers?
Hi Tom, currently it doesn't apply to animals and birds. But now the tool exists there's no reason why they couldn't train the AI to do that. Perhaps we'll see that functionality in future updates.
Tips and tricks please
Do you know how to remove the green fringe from a greenscreen around some of the hair edges?
I do but maybe too long to explain here in the comments... in a nutshell, a two layer aproach with the top layer slightly looser cropped than the bottom and use the frange area in a desaturated mode, and/or adjust the hue shift from green to brown, and combine with a blend mode like overlay or multiply. Playing with those variables can eliminate the green fringe.
Hi Anthony! At last -- Skylum have kept their promise of a background replacement tool! Thanks for the hacks Anthony! But when is Skylum going to bring back their 'stamp and clone' tool? 😾 Yes please make more videos on background replacement as some of my portraits have some very unflattering backgrounds! 😺 By the way, are you also a member of Luminar's X? 😺 Regards from Felix the Cat! 🐱
Hi Felix, Clone and Stamp is on its way... I don't have an exact eta though, but yes it's definitely going to be in Neo at some point.
Yes I'm a member of Luminar X - it's a great resource! ( If anyone reading this is wondering what it is: bit.ly/LuminarX )
when you press portrait background , there is anyway to preview what is masked before to remove? thanks you
no preview, but you can refine it before committing it.
I have tried & tried to get acceptable results and just can't.
I don't know whether the image content is too complex, but the background just doesn't clear - unless I lose some of the main image.
Really disappointing.
Tips and tricks mate please.
Nice hacks!
Hello Anthony
I don't find 'catalog' at the top of the screen with Neo. Where is it? Also, I can't right click and get anything.
Thank you, Dan
Catalogue's only there when Neo is envoked in standalone mode. Using it as a plugin Neo will already know which photo you're working on and just open that photo. No need for the catalogue in that instance.
Is it only available in portraits? I've got a photo where I would like to replace some blurry trees
Currently it's human portraits only...
Ist good for full pictures skin retouching ?
It has some nice AI editing tools and other goodies to help out with skin retouching. If you want absolute control for that then photoshop is still the best out there but the techniques are much more complicated. Luminar Neo is slider based which is much quicker and easier.
D*** you are good:)
Naw, thanks Lennie!
Hair is a problem in any program. ON1 does a better job than Photoshop, but I have reasons for not using ON1. I think Neo fits my needs better.
Just spent an hour trying your hacks to clean up background, a very busy background that leaves data behind, and I cant get your hack to work. is that because it only works with portraits? is there a better way to clean up background?
Hi Ron, yes this tool is designed to recognise and work with human form only. Clone stamp is coming in September and will be the best method for image clean up.
great video but I have a problem when I go to put the png. I load the photo in Layers I double click but it doesn't go in for some reason
Should work mate. Not sure what's going wrong there. I'd reach out to Skylum support and pose the question there :)
Tips & tricks very good keep them coming. For me slower please!
Thanks mate. The slower / faster conundrum is a tough line to walk. I get requests both ways. (Sometimes I get told I talk too much too! - but I'm just trying to cover the info)
Use RUclips playback speed to fit your needs
Hi Anthony..When I try to mask.. the red mask is applying to the outside of the subjects.
If the mask is on the outside of what you want press the invert button to flip the selection around.
@@AnthonyTurnham I looked to find something like the invert button but could not see it 🙂
Can you do that if there are two People in the photo
Nm I was a bit two quick to ask that then.
So I can’t clone a part of the background like photoshop. Great
Yes, cloning is in NEO, but I think it was missing at time of recording.
Really great tips here Anthony. My only suggestion would be to SLOW down just a bit. Remember that what is second nature for you has most of trying to follow along a lot slower.
Please don’t slow down! Pace is always perfect. There is a pause button, and if you’re really struggling, just lower the playback speed.
I got completely lost during the 2nd hack.
Hello Anthony,
In order to get the 'catalog' link at the top you must use Neo as a stand alone program. You can't get it while in Photoshop
Correct. But when you're in Photoshop and using it as a plugin, it's evident which photo you're wanting to edit because it's what you're working on in Photoshop so the catalogue is kinda redundant anyway.
Do you find yourself still using Luminar AI???... or do you solely just use Neo now???
Hi Brett. I've got a few templates I use for my professional work at the end of my workflow just to add a little more pop. I usually run these through Luminar AI . I synce it across all photos and then run an export. Apart from that though I spend most of my time in Neo. The way it's set up for multiple applications of tools is a big win for the way I like to edit. It just feels more intuitive and creative.
Can you blur backgrounds?
Yes. There's a bokeh AI tool.

Thanks for making the video, you are not going to like this but I'm think even Lightroom is superior this removal. So disappointed as it need it for work. I remove backgrounds as part of my role. Sorry, keep the up good work though. Still love the channel.
Thanks for sharing! Yes, lightroom does a good job on subject and sky now which is great news. The software companies are going to have to keep one upping each other to get an edge.
C'mon Anthony! New Zealand is much closer to the U.S. than it is to Britain, so give up the Commonwealth English. It's "com-POS-it" (as in "com-POSE") not "COMP-osit!" LOL!
Yeah, my accent and pronunciation is pretty mixed up these days. My voice doesn't know where it lives anymore 😋
@@AnthonyTurnham : I'm up late (2am here in California) and you're up early. 3rd day of summer here; 4th day of winter for you!
You talk way too fast
Haven't heard that one before but I appreciate the feedback. You can always slow the video down using the playback speed option in the youtube playback settings.
Great stuff, Anthony, thank you!
My pleasure!
