  • History tends to repeat itself. So, when thinking about what may happen in the future, it may be best to look to our past. Legendary collector Marshall Fogel and dealer Al Rosen (aka Mr. Mint) are both full of opinions. When there is wisdom at our disposal, it's always best to tap into that resource and see what experts have to say about a variety of topics. Geoff Wilson's podcast does a tremendous job at interviewing a variety of guests from around the sports card collecting community. Recently, he has had some interviews with Marshall Fogel that have provided a lot of insight for collectors. Meanwhile, there is a fair amount of video footage of the late Al Rosen across the internet. After sifting through hours of interview footage of these two legends, I decided to pull some key comments/thoughts to share with others in the community. I would encourage you to watch the full video of these videos, which I will provide in the links below:

I grew up in Framingham, MA. That is where the find came from...4/5-miles from where my parents still live. I met Mr, Mint once at the Wilmington show a few decades ago. Table #1, $100 bills in a couple display cases, a few stacks of his book, & a newspaper to read. He is a hobby legend.

Loved the clips from the legends in the hobby. I decided early in my adult collecting of vintage cards that I wanted to collect high condition cards. This was before there was grading. Pausing the video here. @34:08. Yeah it would be amazing to take a ride in the time machine, right? Cy Young card for like 50 bucks. 20 years ago. A lot can change in even less amount of time than that. As we saw yesterday, with Collectors Universe and SGC reaching an agreement. So, yes while I have been bullish on vintage as I think we both are. But playing role of devil's advocate; it's possible Mr. Fogel and Mint, were just at the right place...at the right time. And vintage has peaked. If it does continue to rise, then the question will be who can really afford it?
I'm just going to continue to have fun and yep, collect what I like. But very interesting video though, Graig. And appreciate the amount of time it must have taken you to splice all the different interviews together. Great job Graig! Truly!

I was a kid (14) at the time and really wanted to buy the ‘64 Rose he just bought. I had a job washing dishes and told him that I was serious and had the cash. He said I am only buying today. Wish I could post a picture in the comments! A lot of the old big time dealers were like that - names come to mind but don’t want to disparage anyone incorrectly. The philosophy seemed to be have about 50 whales as your customer base - buy the best and pit them against each other. They had no interest in selling one off to a collector like me. The very front of the National was more like a club than dealer tables the first few I went to in the late 80s early 90s. Buying the cream of the crop, ignoring most people and making big deals with their known customers.
