The 30 Carriage Great Southern Passenger Train around Melbourne

This week Schony747 features the Journey Beyond Rail's Great Southern Luxury Tourist Train. The train runs between Adelaide and Brisbane during December, January and February. The train uses the passenger cars used for The Ghan that doesn't run during those months due to the wet season in the Northern Territory and Darwin. It's an impressive looking train and NR30 and NR31 are painted in the orange Great Southern livery to haul the train. It's a daylight run through Melbourne from Brisbane where the train stops at Broadmeadows to alight passengers onto coaches. To Brisbane, it's an early morning after dark run through Melbourne.

Awesome video. I always wondered if it used carriages from The Ghan carriages. Can you do part of the trip from say Melb to Bris because I've done the whole Adelaide thing and live in Vic so have done the whole thing here?

Thank you for this vid, I live on a farm at Great Western and it goes past our bottom paddock. I always wondered if it did a run around at Tottenham, but now I know about the Std line to Broady!

To add to my last comment , the cost to replace them is uneconomical at this time.

32 cars each double consist, the Overland 6 cars and spares would be millions so probably not economical

@@Schony747 Not economical whatsoever. Journeys Beyond has done an admirable job refurbishing the carriages as required.

Does the great southern pull into southern cross station?

No it doesn't mate and is the reason why passengers leave the train at Broadmeadows. 32 cars would be too long for Southern Cross and would require a loco shunt.

I have been on both the Indian Pacific and the Ghan, those carriages need to be replaced as they have passed their use by date
