I started maintaining my R22 AC units (3&5 ton) myself about 10 years ago because some knucklehead overcharged my 3 ton unit ( and charged me for it). With the exception of a fan motor going out, my units have been running flawlessly for 10 years. I spent about $2K on equipment but I have saved 3 times that much by doing it myself. I knew nothing about AC 10 years ago but I'm very knowledgeable now.
Bet they noticed a big difference in cooling performance. I remember back in my helper days they would always say it was cooling good and you look at the numbers and listen to it grinding itself to death and go that’s not even possible lol lol.. It’s funny how first impressions can be deceiving making you think the fan motor was bad! Your careful, professional method of trouble shooting revealed the true problem of the bad compressor.
With a R22 system change of condenser the pressures are higher aren't you worried about the difference in pressures on the evaporator coil and you converted from a txv to a piston drivin ? Thats chancing a rupture don't you think?
It looked way overcharged to me, the compressor was making noise because it was being slugged by to much liquid. Meter readings should have been 70 by 190. Did you check the SH and SC, that would have been a dead give away. Looks like someone charged it to 410 pressure specs.
You can not get a true reading on the capacitor till you cut the diode off one side. Then you can tell if it is good or bad. If it is good put a clip on diode on it. You get clip on diode at HVAC supply house.
@@theduffster2581 Easy for other techs to say that all of the equipment needs to be changed out sitting from an armchair perspective instead of being on the same job this guy was on. If the customer ain't paying for it, would you do it? Sometimes they want the bare minimum to get them back up and running again because they don't have the funds to "do it the right way". This guy is trying all he can to help the homeowner(s) out on a budget. He shouldn't be shamed for doing all he can without breaking the bank.
@@andrewwelch5668 it’s still not the right way in my opinion an old r22 coil will not hold up I’ve been doing hvac work in Chicago for 30 plus years and I don’t do the quick fix plus the price of a new coil wouldn’t be that much more and it would be done the proper way and no I’m not on my couch lol just have seen a lot of failures with that procedure I guess that’s just me 👍🏻 keep hydrated and be safe 👍🏻
I’ve had that happen when power cuts on and off rapidly Compressor sounds like the polarity is switched on a 3 phase system If you let it run to long that way compressor will fail If you hear this turn system off for a few minutes but most homeowners will just let it run that way
I would cut the breakers to the HVAC units if a bad electrical storm was coming. Just one close lightning strike on a nearby utility pole could put you out 10,000-20,000$ I have had it to where my condenser would not start for a few hours after a nearby lightning strike on a pole. Probably a electrical board got a little juiced if you know what I mean. I got lucky there as there were no performance issues afterwards.

Incorrect. A lot of newer R22 evap a were rated “R22 or 410a” then it said to confirm at condenser l.
I’m thinking the air handler was replaced with a 410 coil and r22 txv so all he had to do was change the condenser and replace metering device.

Why did you go from a txv valve to a piston and how do you figure it’s more efficient?
he can't figured out that is more efficient. It is like going from an inverter compressor to a scroll or reciprocating compressor.
Pistons are much easier to deal with TXV suppose to make it 1/2 SEER higher.
You try to discharge the capacitor with your drill I wonder if the capacitor has a charge one day itll burn up your drill

3:30 I thought when you hear a hum. The contact was bad.
If the contactor is humming then should have to ohm out the coil to see if it is bad. But some will hum and they will still be ok.

True I would have done pump down test to find condition of valves.

Not on that residential compressor.
The last I knew valve plates changed in cast iron compressors. Pump down only sure way when valves don't seem right. The readings were very marginal.

Here its code if you replace compressor bearing equipment all must be changed can use existing lines set if so choose.
On video sounds like it's overcharged
In most cases relay causes capacitor to go bad. I would have tried to add a little oil to compressor .
