I had this once in the past. Tried my home remedy which worked for me and the condition has not returned to date. At night before bed I placed a loose fitting glove on my hand and inserted popsicle sticks in the finger slots so my fingers could not bend. In the morning my fingers felt achy (like they had been trying to bend during the night but couldn’t). Repeated this for 3 or 4 nights. After several years there is no recurrence and the finger seem to be working normally.
Janice I think you started your remedy before it got worse. Mine is beyond home remedy. I was losing functionality. Update: Had surgery a week & a day ago. Removing stitches today
I had a trigger finger on my right thumb which was so painful for months before I decided to get a surgery done and it did help, now am experiencing another in my left third finger,
Hi Doctor, I had a very painful trigger finger on my middle finger, I went to a local clinic, the Doctor gave one shot of steroid injection 💉, after a week the pain was still there, I went over to the Clinic again, and the Doctor 😷 gave another steroid injection 💉...i forced my hand to force and push a cabinet 🗄, I felt something cracked inside my hand 🖐️....I went and checked with a specialist Doctor, he said my tendon on the middle finger is cracked due to the frequent steroid injection 💉, it has soften my tendon and he said not safe to take the steroid injection frequently....now I have to do a surgery for the broken tendon and my trigger finger pain as well...i can't bend the end of my middle finger, it's a very disappointed experience for me 😥...pls be careful before taking the steroid injection 💉....better get a specialist opinion...just sharing my experience with the trigger finger effects
That does sound like you may have received the steroid injections too closely together. We agree it's best to see an orthopedic hand surgeon to diagnose and treat trigger finger. Hope you heal from the surgery quickly and are able to regain the function of your middle finger and hand!
Very informative! I think I overused my right fingers from pulling up and yanking weeds from my garden this summer...worse at night. I'm icing it and massaging my fingers. I think it's slightly better. We'll see.
This video perfectly describes what I’m experiencing. I think my trigger fingers came from bad form while using hand tools in my garden. I pulled up videos on tendon gliding exercises for fingers and they really help. I read a comment in this thread about splinting the finger(s) at night with two popsicle sticks; I’m going to try that, too.
Good Morning sir . I am a trigger finger(s) Patient . In 2008 year my right hand all the 5 fingers showed symptoms of stensing tenosynovitis . I underwent the surgery to all the 5 fingers . I felt much comfort after the surgery . Again in 2016 Three fingers of my left hand ... Thumb , ring and pointing finger again troubling me the trigger finger . Once again the same orthopedic surgeon operated those 3 fingers . I got rid of the problem. Again in 2018 Some problem with my wrist and diagnosis says that it is de quervein tenosynovitis , Once again I under went surgery . No it is fine . Last month on 26.08.2022 once again Trigger finger severe pain noticed to my left hand little finger . Again A1 pulley problem is cleared by surgery . .Finally only me left hands middle finger is left . No symptoms of trigger finger . Sir what should I do to prevent the only remaining finger not to be found as triggered finger . My age now is 56 . Male . I am not the heavy user of fingers . Never over strain them .
Thank you for beautiful explanation, I started experiencing this locked finger this year in January. Am doing finger exercises till the day for hospital appointment
Hey people, don't forget to change ur diet.. personally, dropped all sodas ( 2 a day) and stopped eating fast food breakfast . It took aprx 3-4 weeks to make a tight fist without worry of trigger finger but I could notice after 3-4 days T- finger was only happening bout once a day vs 3-4 .. never went to doctor. I'm 54
I'm a full time welder for a building manufacturer and also a self employed welder. Ive been dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger for years, no matter how much I stretch it just keeps getting worse. I'm 30, I shouldn't be dealing with this yet haha.
That must be difficult with your profession, we see these conditions in people of all ages. Hopefully you can see an hand surgeon and work with them to relieve your symptoms.
I have recurring problems in both hands, my feet are getting worse as well. My feet are numb , sore and my little toes are starting to cross. And I’ve experienced trigger finger while working, while riding my atv and out of the blue like a few minutes ago, which is why on here looking this up. My family doctor said I have slight elevated levels in my blood but I don’t have rheumatoid arthritis and no diabetes. I imagine a hand specialist is probably the next step . They wanted to refer me a while back but I didn’t want to make an hour drive to that doctor. I’m almost 57 and not overweight.
@lovesinfinite1 I appreciate that, but I don't think witchcraft alone can help this. The only clear cut cure is to stop repetitive motion long enough for it to heal. Unfortunately, our economy here in the U.S. is forcing me to have to do this to myself. I thought my white privilege would've kicked in by now. Oh well.
Great information, I wish you live in my city, because I have this problem for many years, and the doctors here ingnore all together, imfortly I believe on my case I have to live until I die with it.
So the underlining problem or contributor is Inflammation?! the first time i think i started to have pain was after a drum circle , me playing the Djembe too hard . i had soreness for a while but went away. now for the last 4 months this exact thing is showing on my left ring finger . as i sw in the video a couple of times ,The ring finger!! is this specific finger more vurnable ?
I’m currently experiencing this on middle finger… I’m a guitarist and thank goodness it’s on my right hand (picking and strumming) rather than my fretting hand .. still able to work 3x a week gigs a bit sore and hope it goes away
Almost 53-year old female. 30+ years as a hairstylist. Use my hands a lot (obviously). For the past several months my right ring finger has been getting more and more painful and I can bend it a little-but that’s it. Only a little. I can feel it is pretty swollen at the base of the finger in my hand (where they meet). But I don’t remember it ever getting stuck in the closed position. I thought I was getting carpal tunnel syndrome, which is pretty common in hairstylists but my research says otherwise. Now I’m wondering if it’s this trigger finger, even though it was never stuck in that closed “trigger” position.
Same thing happened to me on the same finger. Today I was treated with steroid shot for inflammation and feel much better. I was prescribed some meds for 6 days. I will also be using a splint on my ring finger for faster relief. I pray it doesn’t happen again in the future. It was super painful to the point I couldn’t sleep at night.
I have RA, my right ring finger gets stuck at the middle joint. I start OT this week, I cant make a fist with that hand anymore, I hope it can be fixed.
Symmetrical trigger fingers in both my hands, with no pain, all my life. I hope that there's some physical therapy that can help, because I really don't think anti-inflammatories are going to do it for me.
it could also be gout or rheumatoid arthritis. you have to have an xray exam, cbc test, uric and creatinine test to know if food is causing this or a medical condition such as diabetes or again arthritis and if all these tests pass and everything seems to be normal, then it's trigger finger. I'm now experiencing it myself because I am a gym rat been working out for 18 years straight. I've been on therapy right now for 2 weeks no working out, riding my motorcycle or playing my games on a controller. what I'm doing is resting my hands, drinking plenty of water, icing it 4x a day, warm water therapy every 48 hrs, wearing a splint and compression glove so I can sleep and not have my fingers painful in the morning and I also take anti inflammatory drugs one in the morning one at night and a muscle relaxant pill before I sleep. I hope this works coz I know how it feels and it sucks. let's help each other, who in here is back to normal and what medications or routines do you do?
I’ve discovered that cutting up a piece of KT tape into finger sized slices, pulling it tight and putting it on my trigger finger (back of the hand, from where the nail starts down to about the center of the hand) at night, keeps my finger nice and straight.
2 months ago I got fracture in my right hand ring finger and after the treatment I facing this same issue I can't able to bend my finger to palm and try to do manually it feels to get locked in bottom of my ring finger...docters didn't suggest Mi this..
Hello, I'm 18 and I have this on my right hand middle finger, the thing is, I've had it for years and just got used to it, It's in the stage where it pops when i extend and put back the finger and it has been like that for a long time, as I've said, it doesnt bother me that much but it affects my grip strenght on the right hand and I'd like to get it removed, the excersises, aspirin/ibuprofen, and icing never helped before. Should I just get the injection?
You may be a candidate for an injection or surgical treatment. Schedule an appointment with an orthopedic hand surgeon to get a diagnosis and treatment options.
Thanks, I had it happen today, doing tree work, climbing with harness and rope and pulleys and small chainsaw, towards the end I had to stop, my middle finger was locking in, and my thumb on both hands. I went to the pharmacy, and got some muscle decontraction tablets, some cream, and some berocca. My biceps feel over worked, and they were even shaking/twitching. So job almost finished pushed to 7 days. But it was sore had to straighten out my fingers and push my palm against the tree. That's when I decided that the day was finished. I definitely think having enough calcium and magnesium is important, I usually take multi vitamins as I work outdoors. A good hearty meal too is important. Thanks again for the info.
I've started to experience this in my right middle finger some months ago. I can feel it starting in the left middle finger as well. Related videos suggest this could possibly be thyroid related. I also started waking with both hands tightly clinched in a fist, and the pain is excruciating! I'm 65, and had both thyroid and para thyroid removed in 1998. I have yet to find any two doctors that agreed on much of anything. So far, all of them just ignore these types of symptoms. My endo of 23 years, has always suppressed my thyroid. I changed that two years ago. It's anybody's guess what's going on at this point. I've also been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis in 2017, if that makes any difference. Maybe I just expect too much from any doctor to know about all these issues or what to do about them. Thanks for posting the video!
@@user-wb2yv7ll9d No. I have it in both hands and now have terrible pain in all my fingers. I am surmising this is from an adverse reaction to my thyroid & 3 BP/kidney meds combo. I stopped all the meds about five days ago and cut the amlodipine in half. Not even worth the time to try and ask for ideas from the endocrinologist. I was with the last endo for 23 years. I asked for labs Jan 2021 and he suggested I go elsewhere!
@@waynebrunner1826 Oh gosh Wayne, I hope that works. I have low thyroid and take levothyroxine. Just make sure your thyroid levels remain in the normal range.
@@user-wb2yv7ll9d My levels are extremely out of range. I have no thyroid or para. Levels have been perfect except for, the long list of symptoms I've given the doctor for over 20 years. Never addressed any of them. I finally decided I had enough and went off all the meds for ten months. What I found was, almost all my symptoms, especially the worst of them, was a direct result of the levoxyl, didn't matter which med it was. SEVERE neck pain (over 30 negative MRI's), constant headaches, cold rear round and on and on.. All caused by the medication. Normal TSH around 3 was now 98. This caused serious issues with both eyes and the only reason I agreed to go back on synthroid. My primary concern has been renal failure, which was a result of going to the ER and a hospital stay, for hbp after getting a staph infection. Just can't win. Thankfully it's near the end of the road.
@@waynebrunner1826wow i’m so sorry you’re feeling this way and dealing with all of this. and even worse to find doctors really don’t help :( my experience as well from mid 30s heading to 40s they don’t cure or truly manage, just prescribe drugs that might cause more problems. i’m experiencing this in one digit at my age and b concerned this is related to undiagnosed autoimmune condition (markers present but unspecified)
This is complete information thank you so much. I have thumb trigger finger on my right hand I got it after I’ve done paint by numbers art for 3 months I used small paint brushes so now I know what to do.
I was watching this on your website, but had to drop out to watching it on RUclips to make the comment... Excellent discussion on the condition, and it answered my questions! Thank you for uploading this video!
Thank you for the informative video! I've had this for 2 weeks, it's gotten alot better with massages but every morning I can't straighten my finger. Doctor prescribed me Fastum gel but it didn't work at all... I refused oral painkillers and chose to bear with the pain. Oh the price I'm paying now🥴😵
@@AMIGO31 took more than a month to recover, it was a pretty slow recovery I must say. In the day time my finger could straighten but once I clench my hands (I tend to do that when I'm sleeping), I'd wake up every morning to a painful finger that cannot be straightened. It went on like this for weeks until one day I just woke up without the pain
I have this right now in my right wrist, middle finger, ring finger. I’m only 26. Over strained my fingers for work, lots of construction as in tile work, and civil construction pipe work.
Overuse of the fingers or repetitive gripping actions can strain the tendons, leading to trigger finger. If the symptoms do not resolve with rest and conservative treatment, surgery may be an option to relieve pain and restore function.
35 year old active male with no other conditions and I woke up with this issue on my pinky. It went away after being awake for an hour but it’s got me worried enough
Me 60 yr old mechanic, have trigger finger both thumbs and mainly pointer finger on left hand. Have gotten multiple injections in these locations over the past few years. Right now, pointer finger is very swollen at first joint and the finger does not stay closed but very hard to bend due to the pain and inflammation. My Hand doc warned me last time that I am in very high chance of ruptured tendon if I get more injections........and if I have the surgery, which is very hard to do, because of having to keep working, then I also need to find another line of work that will lessen the chance of a re-injury after the surgery..........I take 500mg Aleve and topical gel for inflammation.......but feel like I am stuck now because the injections could cause big issues and I have to get another job.....all at the same time, but right now, I am working with my hands and painful and hard to work with left hand.........gonna make appt soon to see if my doc thinks oral steroids will help......I have not seen any comments about this...............this is my story, thought I would share and comment.

I found my trigger finger being a 30 years of bass guitar playing was related to my tennis elbow also taking potassium, calcium and magnesium before a gig stopped this happening without surgery
The condition can be brought on by not being able to stand up from a chair without pushing down on the arms of a chair as in my case after suffering Piraformis syndrome and Gluteal amnesia which strangled my Sciatic nerve to both legs ,6 months unable to stand or walk without extreme pain .
Does it have to be so bad that the finger is locked or is that not a required symptom? I got a hit on my hand a month ago and everything fits in this description of what it happening but my finger isn't so badly catchign that i cant stretch it. The hit i experienced was on the top of the knuckle too, which is where there is a bump on the side where the tendon is... When i try to bend, the 'triggering' happens where my fingers starts to catch and tremble... Or is this not triggerfinger?! I dont see a specialist until next month due to them having no openings..
Steroid injections cause joints and surrounding tissues to deteriorate. Unfortunately, orthopedic surgeons and other medical personnel don't seem to inform their patients of this serious fact. My sister had to have her left and right hip replaced due to steroid injections for other issues. Beware. Steroids should be a LAST resort.
Injury to the base of the finger can also cause trigger finger. My thumb kept locking, I looked up the video then realized I had trip earlier in the day during hiking, landed on my wrist and hurt the base of my thumb, same thumb started locking afterwards.
My last 3 knuckles are locked up that I could only use my thumb and index to hold my phone. Need Therapy as to unlock them whenever I am feeling stressed.
I wake up and can’t bend my pointer finger and I can feel my tendons are tight. As soon as I massage my finger,I can then bend it. Is this still a trigger finger?
So that's what is called! I have osteoarthritis on top of other pain but I have had this pain for so many years and I had told my doctor and all she says it's the arthritis and she she gives medicine that don't keep it away. Just today I was in tearing pain, i was cooking and while grabbing the thong my fingers locked up. Food got burned because I couldn't turn off the stove or grabbed the food. Had to go across the street to my neighbors for help. Once my fingers lock in I cant move them. If i try my hand will shift inwards and hurts more. The pain is over 10. And it repeats itself thru out the day for many days.
Glad that our video was helpful for you. Hopefully, you can see an orthopedic hand specialist to diagnose and treat your injury so you can get your hand function back.
Hey I was doing gripper exercises with a regular gripper last year, I did it wrong for a while but figured it was just fatigue and that I'd train and make it stronger, but I was using bad form and basically now my middle finger on my right hand points to the right from the root joint or whatchamacallit. I've gone to several so called specialists but no specific information is found on how to straighten it. It doesn't hurt, only if I do something strenuous with that finger and it's been confirmed to not be broken but seems to have been the tendons or something that have been stretched and I want to correct that, any idea how to do so? The finger, the middle finger, is always leaning and touching the ring finger, which it didn't use to and is not supposed to, it should be straightened. Is there something to keep it in place until for it to recover? Such a simple thing that doesn't need surgery, doesn't cause any pain unless it's doing something strenuous and yet no one has any answers for this. Here is a challenge for anyone who might know anything about this.
Hey my name is Eddie and I have a neurological issue in my left and right hand my fingers when I bend them they Shake very fast and my hands turn red and they're always sore unless I ice would put heat on I'm in Canada

I took a job this winter clearing snow, which obviously consists of a lot of shoveling. Never had hand issues before, and in the past month or so, I’ve been experiencing these exact symptoms. On both hands, my middle and ring fingers specifically, I wake up to them practically locked into place, with the middle finger being most severe on my right hand(my dominant hand). After about an hour or so of being awake, the symptoms decrease significantly, but there’s still a noticeable pain but the locked finger(s) go away. Can definitely feel something going on with the tendons
I’m 15 and I’ve had this for over a month now. It started about a month and a half after I got hired as a dishwasher because I’m squeezing a hose for a long time. How do I fix it
Hello, Tristan, I am Kaunain(18M). I too first had a trigger finger on the middle finger of my right hand at the age of 15, and it got better by itself. But the trigger fingers didn't stop by any means. I would often get it on different fingers. Last year, I got myself checked up and it turns out that my rheumatoid arthritis factor in blood is very high. And It's what causing it. Please get yourself checked. Try consulting to a rheumatologist. May God bless you. It took me a lot of time to figure out about rheumatoid arthritis, hope it helps you in doing it sooner if that's the problem.
Don’t you need that pulley to keep the tendon in place? What happens with the surgery? Do patients get bowstringing of the tendon where it won’t stay next to the hand? What are the statistics of permanent resolution to the affected finger post-surgery?
The pulley is divided (released) so that the flexor tendon can glide freely. Although pulleys have an important function in the hand, releasing the pulley should not cause problems in the future. Bowstringing is a complication, but it is not common.
Hello I have a question, can trigger fingers be permitted if not treated in a certain amount of time? I have trigger fingers for 12 years now and I still want to try violin when I turn 14 without the weird feeling in my fingers. The last time I felt pain from trigger fingers was in 3rd and 4th grade. Currently my fingers can bend normally, but I can still feel the click of my fingers bending. Is it possible if I do at home treatment now?
I’m at stage 4. My finger can’t be straightened, it’s too painful, more than that I got trouble to sleep on Wednesday it was too painful. It happens during the winter and last for 2 to 5 days. I experienced that 3 times last year and this is the first time this year. I think it’s time to consult a hand specialist. Thanks for the explanation I can see myself in every example you gave us. Have a good one ! Steve
The Center Orthopedic & Neurosurgical Care & Research thanks for the reply. No I haven’t seen a hand specialist lately. I’m living in Quebec Canada and with our heart care system I have to see a generalist first then he will maybe send me to a hand specialist. It less painful today. During the winter I use a water spray bottle to get into house more humidity, that’s maybe the cause of my problem I pull hard and fast on the handle to spray water for more than a minute. I also lift weights and hang on myself to a bar to train. I’m going to modify my exercises and I’ll see. Thank you!
shymal das thanks Shymal ! It’s getting better now I thing it’s more when I lift heavy stuffs or I hang myself to a bar. I’m 51 my tissues aren’t the same as my twenties ;)

@@Joe-ip2kyI think mine started after doing hanging leg raises. There should be more info out there to warn people about grippers, pull ups, and other bar work like dips etc, cell phones, joysticks etc and the dangers of messing up your hands.
Take my advice and look after your hands. Be careful about calisthenics, game controllers, excessive use of smart phones, lifting weights, using power tools. - any repetitive or heavy work with hands if at all possible. If you have to do any of these then make sure to have rest periods each day and every couple of months. Our hands are priceless instruments and once they’re messed up it can spoil your life.
As a young child I had pinky fingers that would not straighten. With stretching exercises they have mostly straightened. Do I need to be concerned about getting trigger finger as I age?
That's wonderful that the stretching exercises helped straighten your fingers. Trigger finger occurs when the affected finger's tendon sheath becomes irritated and swollen. It may put you at higher risk, but hard to know without an exam from an orthopedic hand surgeon.
Been looking what is this thing I'm feeling and I got here. My finger is not like that but when I try to bend my index finger it's very painful. I felt like a vein near it was dislocated or something. Can someone help me identify this.

Feeling pain in my little finger...I bumped into someone and for months now it hasn't gotten down..I don't feel it dislocated to just a pain inside...I can't bend it much
I am at stage 1. I just discovered that i have "a ball" in this place, my finger works normally. I want to ask what exercises should i do to fix it? Is it possible to go back to normal finger joint only with exercises treatment?
So basically this can occur due to overuse So you need to give your hand some relaxation; allow it to not be used for a while Give it some massage Use some ice on it Then find out ways to reduce the use of your hand For example if you have to make a lot of pizza, and dough the pizza, then maybe find a better technology to reduce the strain on your hand Try to put some heat or ice on the wrist (the area were people would normally cut themselves) If still not healing, then you may require surgery
Finally going to see a Ortho at UAMS the 12th after 5 months of this crap both ring fingers and the middle im thinking just do the surgery and be done with it idk we will find out for sure what she says .

Oh well.

I cant cross index and middle finger. What is my problem? I don’t have any pain on hand or fingers…

Look up “finger tendon gliding exercises” videos. They’ve really helped me.
it could also be gout or rheumatoid arthritis. you have to have an xray exam, cbc test, uric and creatinine test to know if food is causing this or a medical condition such as diabetes or again arthritis and if all these tests pass and everything seems to be normal, then it's trigger finger.

I bet you never lifted weights or did any stretching in your life..

Were you able to resolve it?
@@user-wb2yv7ll9d No. I have it in both hands and now have terrible pain in all my fingers. I am surmising this is from an adverse reaction to my thyroid & 3 BP/kidney meds combo.
I stopped all the meds about five days ago and cut the amlodipine in half.
Not even worth the time to try and ask for ideas from the endocrinologist. I was with the last endo for 23 years. I asked for labs Jan 2021 and he suggested I go elsewhere!

I have two triggers on both hands
Steroid injections cause joints and surrounding tissues to deteriorate.
Unfortunately, orthopedic surgeons and other medical personnel don't seem to inform their patients of this serious fact.

Injury to the base of the finger can also cause trigger finger. My thumb kept locking, I looked up the video then realized I had trip earlier in the day during hiking, landed on my wrist and hurt the base of my thumb, same thumb started locking afterwards.

I am at stage 1. I just discovered that i have "a ball" in this place, my finger works normally. I want to ask what exercises should i do to fix it? Is it possible to go back to normal finger joint only with exercises treatment?
So basically this can occur due to overuse
So you need to give your hand some relaxation; allow it to not be used for a while
Give it some massage
Use some ice on it
Then find out ways to reduce the use of your hand
For example if you have to make a lot of pizza, and dough the pizza, then maybe find a better technology to reduce the strain on your hand
Try to put some heat or ice on the wrist (the area were people would normally cut themselves)
If still not healing, then you may require surgery
