I saw Mobley at last public appearance at jazz forum, nyc, 3rd floor walk up jazz club. Brief interaction with him. Also at slugs. Extremely kind and gentle man who appreciated my youthful exuberance and searched for an napkin to give me his autograph.
Hank introduced me to jazz. Growing up in Philly I was 14 yrs old, a budding elec bass player. He and Sunny Gillette in his late 50's (my guess) rented my mother's basement to practice. The most magical thing we've ever heard. So smooth and humble. He tried to take under his wing and teach me more about jazz, at that time my love was funk. Hey electric bass. I was 19 in the army when my Mom wrote me about his passing and I was distraught. But guys like him never goes away.
Way cool video!! Kenny Drew so underated and largely forgotten now. I was in Atlantic City in '64 on vacation with my parents, 13 years old and wandering around the boardwalk. There was a baron Virginia avenue and I walked past and heard this Jazz band playing a ballad and the sign out front read,"Hank Mobley ". Too young to get in so I stood outside and listened to the set. Wow!
@@ThouveninpascalNot gonna agree on Brecker, but Rollins and Coltrane are, to me at least, closer to being the greatest of all time than Mobley. Angelo , his tenor voice was unfiltered, always coming direct from the heart. Hank’s phrasing was like an interwoven poem, all interconnected in perfect harmony; if you keep only the opening and the closing phrases and take out all the rest in between , there you will surely find the thread that still unites the beginning and the ending phrases together. Coltrane touched our minds with his sheets of sound; Mobley caressed our hearts with his tone & phrasing.

Never thought I would ever get to see Hank play. This is great. And the audio is so much better than the numerous bootleg recordings from this engagement. Too bad there isn't more - maybe even enough for a legit release.
What a superb rendition by Hank and his masterful comembers. I lived in Germany in the early 60s and got to hear the cats play in the small jazz clubs of the era. It was the ideal environment for jazz performers and their audience. Europeans were sophisticated jazz fans who honored the musicians and treated them with deep respect. Glad I got to see this fine video and remember the times.
Beginning in 1965 Hank began to sacrifice some of his soulful strength to smoking and to Blue Note's insistence that he create hit albums employing "rock" beats. To hear him at his best pick up "Soul Station" on Blue Note, Lee Morgan's "Shortnin' Bread" on the same label and Miles Davis "At the BlackhawK." His solo on By, By Blackbird (Friday Night) is as creative and emotional as jazz gets. I've waited since 1950s for a video of Hank. Thanks for this one, with ceaselessly swingin' piano of K. Drew.
To be honest, I do not like this song anymore because it has been played too often, but having discovered Hank Mobeley through RUclips this here is really catching me. Thank you for the upload.
Remember this was the time Dexter Gordon was playing around Europe too. Unfortunatley he was given the title heavyweight and Mobley the Middleweight. Of course they both were both heavyweights. Mobley is superb! Thank you for discovering and posting this gem!!❤
Finally!!! Since he used to live in Europe in the 60s, I was hoping somebody recorded his performance. Great video, backed by "Dexter's trio". I am fortunate to meet Mr, Mobley in 81 in NYC, and I will never forget his voice and everything. Legend!!
@@ColinColtrane Very friendly and soft. When I said I am a tenor player and a big fan of his, he said he likes to hear my play. What an honor! I think you can hear his voice on Art Blakey Cafe Bohemia's live recording. He introduced the tune " alone together" before he plays.

We finally have Hank in motion, milestone achieved! Step 2, get Hank live while playing one of his originals, maybe "Double Exposure" or "This I Dig of You" or "Funk in Deep Freeze", literally any, he wrote 100's!
After watching this video numerous times and commenting in the past a thought just occurred to me as I watch this yet again... If this clip exists then there must be other clips from this night as I'm sure this wasn't the only song captured on film! Would be great if more was to become available!

I had the great fortune to not only hear but to see Hank play at the very much now de-funked "Slug's saloon on the lower east side of Manhattan in New York City (yes I'm just that old) but as other have already indicated, to discover a video recording of him in action is truly a marvelous event in every scene of the word. This is most definite a keeper and kudos to the person who brought it to our collective attention. Many thanks.
Yeah. 77 years old here, and I used to go to Slug's a lot. I saw Hank Mobley and lots of other players there. What a great little venue that was, and affordable!

Just fantastic!! A real treasure after so many, many years of listening and reading about Hank, now seeking him in action. A bucket list request I didn't know existed! Thank you
Wow, this is so cool! I have been looking into Hank Mobley for a few weeks, and he has profoundly impacted my interest in the saxophone. I don't just want to sound like him, I want to become the essence of his sound. Thanks for putting this up!
Marvelous, Cory! Thanks for sharing this. Interesting how in 1968, Mobley's playing in this video is more influenced by Coltrane's playing, than his earlier playing where he's more mostly Prez-influenced.
Magnificent, Magnificent, Magnificent!!! Hank just as I always imagined but never thought to see. Huge thanks for this, such a great performance from all.
Such a great video all the best players. Notice at 8:27 showing how they set up on stage. That is the best way to set up for playing music. Bass right next to the piano player instead of being in the harp. Drums hi hat right next to the bass. Really helps the grove that way. Check out Hank Mobley on Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall with Gil Evans. One of my most favorite recordings of all time. They released the full concert you can hear on one of the digital outlets and maybe a Cd you can buy. There is so much prime Mobley that hadn't been heard before. He was on fire.
Wow such a treat to see footage of the great Hank Mobley and how interesting to see him playing quite a few later than most of records. He's obviously come heavily under the influence of Trane. But still a great great player.

"Jazzhus Montmartre", Copenhagen, Denmark, March 10, 1968 - from that event only Blue Bossa was released, and now that Summertime is released, Alone Together and Workout are still out there somewhere.
I don't know where you have "Blue Bossa" being released but the Japanese CD from March 10 with Blue Bossa, Alone Together, Summertime and Workout are something different. This performance of "Summertime" is a little short of 8 minutes. The Japanese CD version is over 17 minutes. None of the tracks on the cassettes that have circulated match this track timing. It's new, I believe.
