Always loved Mobley but Pim Jacobs has been a great find on youtube. The orchestration is a great adjunct to his playing. Jazz has suddenly become alive and available in depth on youtube.
Hank sounds in good form here-I met him twice in Philadelphia circa 1976, but he was not well, so I never really got a chance to hear him in person at his peak, but love his recordings! I recall seeing saxophonist Bob Berg with Horace Silver in San Francisco in the early seventies and asking him who he was listening to and he said Hank Mobley.
That is a GREAT brush of greatness meeting Mobley in Philly. I wonder when you met, if he was dealing with his lung cancer diagnosis and could not play as he once did, hence Hank being despondent by not being able to make a living as a musician.
@@edwardevans652I went to a club in Philadelphia where he was playing and he was to sick to play, much later I heard he was even homeless, living at the 30th St. train station
Hank has always been a very special favorite musician of mine. Hank has long been underrated by the press and the polls. But ask any of the best players around today who their favorite tenor players and Hank will be named. He is an original, like no other, and he played in a very relaxed fashion. Hank had the sweet and the hip and always so soulful and funky.....swinging like mad every time!! It's Hank Mobley along with Wynton Kelly that made Miles Davis Friday & Saturday Night at the Blackhawk my favorite all-time Miles record. I saw him at the Blue Coronet in Bed Stuy in 1980. He still sounded pretty good but he was not well and not near his peak but it was a thrill just the same!
This is amazing. Such great playing by Hank and all the musicians, good arrangement on the big band piece, great sound and to top it off a message in Hank's own hand writing!
I wonder what happened to the footage from the Dutch television broadcast? That would be the 'holygrail' as there has never been video footage of Hank Mobley performing.
Correction: The film footage does not exist anymore, I'm sorry. In those years Ampex video tapes were used in The Netherlands, and these tapes were re-used.after broadcasting.
In the '90s, essentially before the arrival of the internet, the younger generation that we became familiar with his music through its CD releases, we believed that Hank Mobley was a big name during his lifetime.... sadly it was not.
There is a short bit of footage of him with Thelonious Monk and the Baroness, and I think Sonny Clark, if you look up The Jazz baroness documetary . He's just standing around talking with them.
I am doing a thesis on Hank Mobley and I’m having difficulty finding a lot of personal information about him. Does anyone have any recommendations? I am also analyzing some of his solos and showing how he emphasized melody and rhythm. I am taking particular interest in this I dig of you, and remember.

Thanks for posting. Bought the Mosaic Records box set of Hank's 1960's recordings and it is outstanding.

Live recordings from the 60s? These sound fantastic! Hank's one of my faves.
I recognize his handwriting as I have a copy of a letter he sent from Paris to a promotor in Manchester in ,68 . I have a gig in Manchester also ...
