What the hell am I listening to. If this is genius I’m elated to be a simpleton
There once was a writer who was obsessed with the complexities of the English language. At first, he only wrote what other people told him to, but pretty soon he was making works of his own too. They were nothing crazy, rarely did they exceed three words, but they were his. As time went on he grew bored with these sentences and went as far as he could with what he knew. He made long ones, short ones, ones with great meaning and ones with none at all. He put these sentences together only to find they could mean different things than when they were alone. After years of hard work, practice, and most importantly: thought, he had written a short story. Everyone around him, having watched his evolution, loved the work. Eventually word spread around the globe it was the most genius thing anyone had ever written. Word spread to a little French boy who pondered of the wonders the story would bring to him. He bought a copy of the work and read it all the way through. After it was finished, all he could think about how silly it was, a man would write an entire book of gibberish.

Well one, I would contend that this artist isn't universally praised; and two, I merely commented to say that I don't like whatever is going on here -- this doesn't impress me creatively, and I am anything but surprised that others would disagree.

Although, for a kid to be so thick to think that just because something is in another language it is gibberish isn’t something I would usually be on the lookout for. It’s an example of ignorance so blatant and extreme that I question its utility for meaningful story telling. Maybe you just meant to insult me - I don’t know or care. Regardless, I think as far as jazz is concerned, it would be inaccurate to say that I just don’t speak the same language. I’m no stellar musician by any means, but I grew up playing saxophone and loving artists like Chris potter, Gerry mulligan, Stan Getz, pepper Adam’s, Ronnie Cuber, Sonny Rollins, Cannonball, Paul Desmond, Cecil Payne, John Coltrane, and the list goes on; I’m hardly unfamiliar with jazz and those who are recognized to have contributed greatly to it. I admit there may be some redeeming aspect of this music that even someone like myself who enjoys a wide variety of jazz simply can’t appreciate, but I think an apt simile, if we are to use language, to describe whatever noises are being produced here to jazz broadly would be that this performance contributes to a highly experimental, fringe dialect which, in my view, has yet to demonstrate how it can improve the communicative landscape. But none of this really matters, of course.

Wow such a treat to see footage of the great Hank Mobley and how interesting to see him playing quite a few later than most of records. He's obviously come heavily under the influence of Trane. But still a great great player.

Very cool insight into Dexter as a person. It's a shame how little the USA cherished these musicians. In europe there was so much footage captured of all types of jazz musicians. Pretty much all of the great videos of Dex was filmed in Europe.
