The French piano luminary Alfred Cortot declared Esteban Sánchez Herrero (1934-1997) to be a ‘musical genius’. Clara Haskil numbered among their colleagues who thought likewise, and Daniel Barenboim wrote: ‘How is it possible? How can Spain have hidden away a performer of this class?’ But Sanchez, born in Badajoz in 1934, shrank from the limelight even after winning several prestigious piano competitions. Having settled back into his native province as a teacher at the Badajoz conservatoire from 1978, he rarely travelled abroad, leaving a series of recordings made in Barcelona between 1968 and 1974 as his most lasting musical legacy.
The highlight of that legacy is widely recognised to be Sanchez’s recording of Iberia, that quintessential masterpiece of Spanish pianism. While Alicia de Larrocha’s name remains indelibly associated with Albéniz’s cycle and its post-Lisztian evocations of folk legends and urban life, Sanchez brought to this music an unrivalled sense of fantasy as well as muscularity. The booklet for this reissue includes an outline of Sanchez’s career, a detailed essay on Iberia and a critical appreciation of both his pianism and its harmonious match with the music of Albéniz.
‘The Catalan composer’s great music is always a personal expression,’ writes the veteran critic Luis Gago, ‘whether it is the memory of a landscape, the perception of a rhythm, or an experience which he could not forget.

I've really enjoyed listening to this in piano. I used to play classical guitar but haven't been able to for 10 years now due to physical problems and I love solo classical piano. I hadn't listened to Albeniz in a while, so this was a huge treat to hear piano arrangements.

Albéniz wrote ONLY for piano, never for guitar. So, the well known pieces of guitar sometimes atributed wrongly to Albéniz are later arrangements by other musicians.

Just what I need on a grey, rainy Friday in the UK! Fabulous music, fabulously played. I am back in Caceres in 1992 where I first met and fell in love with everything Spanish. Nothing has changed 30 years on when I hear this.

Felicitaciones! ¡ENHORABUENA! ¡BENDICIONES! Saludos desde México!!!

    Hi, Brilliant Classics.
There is an error in the line beginning with "01:55:57 Recuerdos de Viaje", so the timeline in wrong from there on.
    It should go as:
    "Recuerdos de Viaje:
    01:55:57 En el mar
    02:00:37 Leyenda, barcarola"
    ....up to
    03:17:27 Sevilla".
    The last line should be:
    "03:22:27 La vega"
Cheers and thanks for uploading these wonderful classics!

In the case of his most famous book of work, Suite Espanola, it were composed in 1882 to 1888, finished two years before French Impressionism within classical music were established in 1890. A lot of people claim, that he were inspired by the French Impressionist, which is like an urban myth just denying to die, but it clearly were the other way around. Debussy also spoke highly of his compositions and also did transcribe much of it to orchestral suites. Isaac Albeniz were a piano virtuoso, easily on level of Franz Liszt, which he even were a pupil of and he ever only wrote for the piano.

    • @arrimeme6447
      @arrimeme6447 9 месяцев назад

Iberia, his best piano pieces set, was composed between 1905 and 1909 and its four parts ("cuadernos") were premiered between 1906 and 1909

Are these remastered recordings from the 1960s and 1970s? Albeniz resorts to whole tone passages at times which are somewhat annoying but overall his well crafted piano compositions are vastly underrated.

    • @abdul-lateefismail1601

@@abdul-lateefismail1601 That is not true at all. It is the other way around, I can tell you: His work were before and inspired them! For instance, his still most famous Suite Espanola were composed in the years 1882 to 1888 and French Impressionism within classical music were not established before 1890.
